to the first congregational church in berkeley. it's probably going to stay closed for days. damon street which is in front of the church and perpendicular to where we are now just reopened. and the people here are still recovering from their loss but say they will use this fire as a way to prove they're resilient. the pews are empty and the hymn books contain words that will go unsung here this weekend. but this place of worship remains standing and she says her congregation is staying strong. >> i'm thinking this is going to be a lot of work. but i'm thinking we can do hard things. our congregation. >> reporter: the sanctuary and chapel survived yesterday's fire thanks to firefighters who crawled on a catwalk that's between this ceiling and the roof. this water damage is now causing part of the ceiling to fall off in chunks. it's a sad story for the building they call pilgrim hall that served as the congregation's office space, library, thrift store and sunday school classes. it was red-tagged today deeming

it structurally unsafe. >> we're worried it's an unreinforced masonry building so we are worried about bricks collapsing and unsupported chimneys because of the fire. >> reporter: she says it's not a matter of if they rebuild but when. >> we have a great congregation. they are very resilient. they have been through fires before. some people remember that and remember the coming together that happened and the rebuilding phase and we're optimists so we are already starting to dream about what's next. >> reporter: today cal berkeley students were checking out the fire, too. amazed that the destruction happened feet from their dorm rooms. >> it's still quite smoky. >> reporter: the corner of pilgrim hall is where fire officials believe the cause of the fire may have started. they are not officially releasing details yet but the assistant fire chief said that's what they suspects that the flames first broke out. for the people who attend here, no services tomorrow. instead there will be a service

across the street at the first presbyterian church at 2 p.m. tomorrow. in berkeley, jackie ward, kpix 5. in santa clara county the "loma fire" is still burning this afternoon. it's now 56% contained. but the fire scorched more than 4,000 acres. it's destroyed a dozen homes and 16 buildings. hundreds of homes are still threatened tonight. one firefighter who had a knee injury has been released from the hospital. as kpix 5's maria medina shows us, residents of morgan hill gathered today to find out what's next. >> we have things packed up within 10 minutes and ready to go. reporter: lucy among the evacuees who packed the morgan hill community center this morning where she learned firefighters plan to open up the road she lives on six days after she left. >> you're saying good-bye. it might be the last time. >> reporter: but while she gets to go home today, some evacuees must still wait. >> oh, i really want to go home soon. >> reporter: roman and his service dog slept in this evacuation center waiting

patiently for word when he can return to his property and other animals. >> they were able to save the house so far. everything is okay. >> reporter: but many aren't just waiting on when they can return home. they also want to know what forced them out in the first place. how close are you to finding out the cause of this fire? >> it's under investigation. >> reporter: rumors are swirling a marijuana grower sparked the "loma fire." yesterday, kpix 5's kiet do discovered pot farms booming in the santa cruz mountains and confirmed investigators just recently began marijuana operations in the area. >> basically every rural area that's mountainous has some type of cultivation whether legal or illegal. and we do investigate those thoroughly. >> reporter: the sheriff's investigators say if someone caused the fire, they will hold them accountable for a fire that destroyed homes and put thousands at risk during the firefight. >> it was very dangerous. people put their lives on the line the last two days to hold the canyon and that's what kept it from coming over our ridge.

>> reporter: firefighters say the weather will be on their side once the wind moves out. they still hope to get it under control by monday. in gilroy, maria medina, kpix 5. >> that "loma fire" comes as firefighters across the state are gearing up for what could be one of the most dangerous months of the year for wildfires. five of the six most destructive wildfires in california have occurred in october. the winds and dry vegetation poses a risk for fire danger. the largest fire in state history, the cedar fire, broke out in october 2003. it burned more than 273,000 acres, which is 10 times the size of san francisco. and brian has been tracking fire conditions today. >> thank you for that nice intro. we are looking at "loma fire" conditions for tomorrow. the winds are actually going to pick up as we have low pressure plunging out of the gulf of alaska tomorrow. don't forget that when in fire began, the temperatures were in the mid-90s. tomorrow they will be in the low 60s. winds will be up though to about 20 miles an hour. all that is good news for

firefighters and added good news is there could be rain in the area. good news colder, rain. bad news, windier but i think in general this is going to help them out. juliette? >> thank you. new at 5:00, east bay firefighters have safely rescued a man that was stuck in a storm drain. it happened along babbling brook way in pittsburg. crews used this machine to actually pull him out of the drain. officials are still trying to figure out how he got stuck. well, in a developing story out of the east bay, a one- year-old child is hospitalized after falling outside a shoe store in brentwood. it happened outside pay less shoes this afternoon. police say the child was in his grandmother's arms when she fell. the child went to the hospital with moderate injuries. union city police are investigating a possible shooting after a gun was fired during a high school football game. it happened last night on tulane street near logan high school. police were handling a fight on the field when they heard gunfire. a group of people ran from the

scene. one person was found hiding in a yard. now, no word on if that person was connected to the shooting. no victims or injuries reported. we now know a 6-year-old boy has died in a school shooting in south carolina. jacob hall had been in critical condition after he was shot in the leg. another student and first grade teacher were also injured after a 14-year-old boy opened fire on a playground. the teen has been charged with murder and three counts of attempted murder. police are still searching for a motive in the shooting. more protests under way in the san diego area after an unarmed black man was shot to death by police. >> no justice, no peace, no justice, no peace! >> people held a rally at a park in el cajon before marching to the police station. religious leaders talk about the need for better officer training. police released video of the 38- year-old man. a still frame shows him pointing a device at an officer

just before he was shot. now to campaign 2016. hillary clinton and donald trump have light campaign schedules this weekend while their running mates are preparing for tuesday's vice- presidential debate. as brook silva-braga reports, with 38 days until the election, state officials were urged today to stop hackers from impacting the vote reporter: hackers have gained access to some state voting systems and have taken steps to potentially attack many others according to homeland security secretary jeh johnson in a letter saturday. he revealed 21 states have turned to his department for help. they have not found evidence of any manipulation of voting information. >> who gets up at 3:00 in the morning -- [ laughter ] >> -- to engage in a twitter attack? >> reporter: the campaign is also being waged online. friday evening hillary clinton said donald trump's early- morning twitter rant against a former miss universe proved he is temperamentally unfit to be president. then saturday morning she launched her own string of 3

hire more firefighters and cops. on the bright side, even though san jose has one of the highest tax rates in santa clara county, at 9%, it is still low compared to neighboring alameda county with city starting at 9.5%. four places have a 10% sales tax including san leandro. in san jose, i'm da lin, kpix 5. more bay area headlines now. today, sunnyvale's law cracking down on smoking goes into effect. the updated ordinance prohibits smoking in all outdoor areas where people are eating or drinking and at all parks and golf courses. and smoking is banned from indoor and outdoor common areas at all apartment buildings with two or more units. trash is becoming a growing problem on freeways and interchanges in the south bay. caltrans says conditions in santa clara county have sunk from good to poor since 2012. drivers cite two glaring trouble spots. highway 87 and interstate 280,

and 101 at tully road. and statewide, trash on highways is an expensive problem. last year's estimated clean-up cost grew to over $76 million. well, a national hotel trade group and a bay area hotel union say airbnb is hurting hotels. share better sf just released a new study. that revealed san francisco air bb's host earned a disproportionate share of revenue. organizers say airbnb rents out more than half a million rooms in san francisco each year. the report also found that nearly 1300 homes were rented out for more than the 90-day cap last year. well, next, searching for clues. the investigation under way into what caused that deadly new jersey train crash. and in the weather department we are looking at a beautiful day today, but oh, what a difference a day can make. oh, big changes for sunday. we'll detail them coming up. ,,

all the way down to the 60s. far cry from last weekend. cooler, windy and showers on the way for tomorrow. such a tranquil looking city not knowing the rain that will descend on it within 24 hours. oakland 69 right now. livermore 71. and san francisco has 63 degrees. there's also winter weather advisories in the mountains. can you believe that? what a switch. snow begins on sunday with the snow level down to 6,000 feet. as much as 6" possible by up top at mount lassen and in the central sierra, not so much. but still it could make for slick roads and icy conditions up the western slope of the magnificent sierra nevada. futurecast shows here it is 10:00 tomorrow morning. this front comes through. doesn't hold together very well but we could get a few sprinkles around and gusty winds out of the southwest. whew! goes through. then the rest of sunday clearing. round 2 on monday by 3 p.m. on monday there's also the suggestion that it will not just be cloudy which it will be but also could get a few showers late monday and into tuesday morning before we

finally begin to break it up and later in the week it will be warm. here's what's going to happen, then. colder windy and question mark on sunday showers if you are in the right place at the right time you get a little bit wet. we'll get another chance late monday and tuesday. and none of this will amount to much. what you will really notice is it's cloudy? it feels so much like autumn already. the numbers will be cool before it warms up on thursday. then the 9ers are playing the dallas cowboys and andrea nakano is here. she will be talking about that. but i'll talk about this aspect of it. 69 degrees cloudy, maybe a sprinkle or two. i relieved andria of that burden. hardly strictly bluegrass festival tomorrow, a few showers, half marathon 68 degrees. castro street fair clouds, cool, and maybe some showers. overnight lows in the 50s. sunrise at 7:06. and the numbers, ha ha, that's bad for mountain view, man. wow. with the division rival in town. they shut down clayton kershaw on the mound. this little guy everyone know the giants magic number is two. ty block making his second career start 3rd inning good morning, good afternoon, and good night! block frees a three straight dodgers to strike out the side the first time he did that in his career. bottom of the 5th inning, angel pagan takes clayton kershaw deep to left field. he gets the friendly hop off the top of the fence. 12th homer for the year for pagan. gives the giants a 1-0 lead. 7th inning, brandon crawford with a comebacker off kershaw and deflects to turner who throws it down the right field line. pagan scores from first to give the giants some insurance. and it proved to be more than enough for block. he strikes out six over eight shutout innings. he also had two hits. block picks up his first career win as a giants beat the dodgers 3-0. the cardinals fell behind 3- 0 to the pirates in st. louis

but they rallied back. the card on top in the 8th. st. louis beat pittsburgh 4-3. the mets are heading back to the play-offs. new york beat philadelphia 5-3 to clinch the top wildcard spot. the sliding catch to end the game. the mets will host either the giants or cardinals on wednesday. so here's what it all means. the giants can clinch the second wildcard spot with a win, or cardinals loss tomorrow. if the giants lose and the cardinals win, they will play a tie breaker game on monday in st. louis. to the nfl. oakland is on the road again this weekend in baltimore as they take on the 3-0 ravens. they hope to repeat the magic from last season where carr threw for a career-high 351 yards and three touchdowns. after struggling in his first two games, raiders cornerback sean smith bounced back nicely last week coming up with an
