second fire that's burning in the 3600 block of [ indiscernible ] street. we'll follow this and bring you new information when we get it. the latest developments in the "loma fire." right now, it's about 56% contained. but the fire has scorched more than 4,000 acres. it's destroyed a dozen homes and 16 buildings. hundreds of homes are threatened and a firefighter who suffered a knee injury has been released from the hospital. this morning, there was a community meeting for the fire. kpix 5's maria medina explains what's next for them. >> we have things packed up within 10 minutes ready to go. reporter: lucy among the evacuees who packed the morgan hill community center this morning where she learned firefighters plan to open up the road she lives on six days after she left. >> you're saying good-bye. it might be the last time. >> reporter: but while she gets to go home today, some evacuees must still wait. >> oh, i really want to go home soon. >> reporter: roman and his service dog slept in this evacuation center waiting patiently for word when he can return to his property and other animals. >> they were able to save the

house so far. everything is okay. >> reporter: but many aren't just waiting on when they can return home. they also want to know what forced them out in the first place. how close are you to finding out the cause of this fire? >> it's under investigation. >> reporter: rumors are swirling a marijuana grower sparked the "loma fire." yesterday, kpix 5's kiet do discovered pot farms booming in the santa cruz mountains and confirmed investigators just recently began marijuana operations in the area. >> basically every rural area that's mountainous has some type of cultivation whether legal or illegal. and we do investigate those thoroughly. >> reporter: the sheriff's investigators say if someone caused the fire, they will hold them accountable for a fire that destroyed homes and put thousands at risk during the firefight. >> it was very dangerous. people put their lives on the line the last two days to hold the canyon and that's what kept it from coming over our ridge. >> reporter: firefighters say the weather will be on their side once the wind moves out.

they still hope to get it under control by monday. in gilroy, maria medina, kpix 5. >> weather is going to help out. meantime, cal fire warning people to watch out for anybody soliciting cash donations for the communities affected by the "loma fire." the individuals reportedly asking for money for the operations related to base camp at christmas hill park in gilroy and firefighting efforts. it's against the law for state agencies to solicit or accept any donation for its own use. in monterey county, firefighters will be on the ground a little longer to put out the soberanes fire. it's going to take another two weeks to fully contain it. officials expect it to have it under -- expected to have it under control until yesterday but it's only 92% contained. the fire started in july in los padres national forest. it's burned about 132,000 acres. an east bay man recovering after he was found stuck in a storm drain. firefighters used the machine you can see in the distance

there to rescue him. it happened this morning along babbling brook way in pittsburg. they are trying to figure out how he got stuck. clean-up is under way after a church fire in berkeley. flames tore through the historic building yesterday afternoon but the church's main part of the building is largely intact. kpix 5's jackie ward reports a street remains blocked off. >> reporter: we're along channing way which is the street that runs next to the first congregational church of berkeley. it's probably going to stay closed for days. dana street which is in front of the church and perpendicular to where we are now just reopened. and the people here are still recovering from their loss but say they will use this fire as a way to prove they're resilient. the pews are empty and the hymn books contain words that will go unsung here this weekend. but this place of worship remains standing and she says her congregation is staying strong.

>> i'm thinking this is going to be a lot of work. but i'm thinking we can do hard things. our congregation. >> reporter: the sanctuary and chapel survived yesterday's fire thanks to firefighters who crawled on a catwalk that's between this ceiling and the roof. this water damage is now causing part of the ceiling to fall off in chunks. it's a sad story for the building they call pilgrim hall that served as the congregation's office space, library, thrift store and sunday school classes. it was red-tagged today deeming it structurally unsafe. >> we're worried it's an unreinforced masonry building so we are worried about bricks collapsing and unsupported chimneys because of the fire. >> reporter: she says it's not a matter of if they rebuild but when. >> students were checking out the aftermath of the fire, two amazed at the destruction that happened feet from their dorm rooms. >> it was crazy. i was walking up the street and saw the smoke. it looked like our building on fire. >> they canceled class because smoke filled up the classrooms.

but yeah, we were not allowed to go back to the dorms until 10:30 at night. >> reporter: she says it's not a matter of if they rebuild but when. >> in times of testing like this, it's a challenge especially for our spiritual lives. >> so this is the southwest corner of pilgrim hall right now. and although not officially, the assistant fire chief said that's where they believe the fire started yesterday. that's not official information. it's unconfirmed. no services here for months so at least tomorrow the church across the street on dana street first presbyterian will be hosting a service for these people at 2 p.m. in berkeley, jackie ward, kpix 5. scary moments near a high school in union city. ' gunshot was fired last night. it happened last night on tulane street near logan high school. police were handling a fight on

the field when they heard gunfire. a group of people ran from the scene. one person was found hiding in a yard. now, no word on if that person was connected to the shooting. no victims or injuries reported. no arrests yet but there are not any reports of injuries or property damage. starting today, it's going to cost more to shop in san jose. the sales tax is increasing from 8.75% to 9%. it will have a larger impact for more expensive items like a motorcycle or brand-new car. for example, a new car listed at $34,000 will cost $85 more in sales tax. >> one single item a couple of pennies more, what do you say? >> not a big deal. >> what about $200 more a year? >> that is quite an increase. i just bought a brand-new motorcycle. the sales tax is more than a few pennies. >> san jose wants to use the extra tax money to fix potholes and hire more firefighters and cops. officials estimate the tax could generate $30 million in

its first year. well, smokers will have to watch where they light up in sunnyvale. a new law took effect today limiting the areas where people can smoke. the updated ordinance prohibits smoking in all outdoor areas where food or drinks are consumed. flow smoking within 25 feet of doors or buildings or 25 feet of bus stops and service areas. it prohibits smoking in public parks and golf courses. a boat sunk in the delta last months in sausalito. the spirit of sacramento capsized near bethel island about a month ago. this week, a crane pulled it up right. now the coast guard and other agencies are teaming up to get about 600 gallons of fuel out of the boat. later, the epa will remove other hazardous materials. a big day for the sacramento kings and the lgbt community. the world's first entertainment arena built to accommodate

it is considered a first foy type of bee in the u-s. yellow-faced bees pollinatee of hawai species. native bees in hawaii him. are endangered. it's considered a first for any type of bee in the u.s. yellow faced bees pollinate some of hawaii's endangered plants. now just last months we told you about a push to protect bees in san francisco. supervisor katie tsang introduced legislation to make san francisco a bee city. it would reduce pesticide use on city property and restore habitats for endangered species. more zika carrying mosquitoes have been found in florida. this is the sixth time they

have been discovered in miami beach. nearly 4,000 mosquitoes samples have been tested since may and only 6 have contained zika. the virus can cause birth defects in pregnant women who become infected. a new report shows teen concussions have hit a record high. researchers from blue cross/blue shield found concussion diagnoses jumped by 71% over the last six years. the patients range from 10 to 19. additionally, concussion diagnoses rose 26% for adults. researchers say that the increase is most likely from new laws that require strict monitoring of people with head injuries in sports. san francisco police are going pink for breast cancer awareness month. check out this pink patrol car complete with the pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness. many police departments across the nation are wearing pink badges and other pink items this month. those jeans in your closet [chuckling] yes your jeans, they are now a state symbol. kpix 5's christin ayers reports

a law signed yesterday by governor brown makes denim the official state fabric. >> with a cuff or not? >> reporter: tommy named his shop in oakland after two iconic writers. >> jack kerouak and jack london. and it's appropriate because like denim, they are american icons. >> reporter: for him, the bill that governor jerry brown just signed naming denim the official fabric of california is fitting. >> denim is and pun intended it's woven into the fabric of california. >> you think back to levi's and california is where levi's was started. >> reporter: levi strauss started selling jeans in san francisco in the mid 19th century. his suppliers tell him 98% of american made jeans are made in san francisco and los angeles. but according to kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen, that doesn't make california

mountain known as the volcano of fire west of mexico city. the eruption started yesterday sending lava and glowing rocks down the mountain and spewing ash into the air. authorities have ordered people to leave their homes. and we are getting a bird's- eye view of hurricane matthew. it could bring devastating winds, deadly storms surge and flooding rain to parts of jamaica, haiti and cuba. matthew is expected to remain a major hurricane into next week. yeah. so bad news maybe for anybody traveling to the south. could be thunderstorms. big problem for haiti. for us, we have a little rain on the way. not too much. and it's going to help the firefighters. the winds are going to pick up to about 20 miles an hour. temperatures though tomorrow this fire began on a day when the numbers were in the mid- 90s. tomorrow it will be in the low 60s. winds will be out of the north to about 20 miles an hour. stronger than they were today but much cooler and there could be a few showers too that has

to help as that low pressure sinks south we'll cool down, as well. right now over the city of san francisco, it's:0 at concord. 63 in san francisco. and in san jose 69. winter weather advisories can you believe it in effect for tomorrow and for monday. the snow should begin on sunday. such as it is. it's way up high at about 6,000 feet. or headed that direction, slick roads and icy conditions for the first time this season. so here's what's happening tomorrow. sunday at 11 a.m. we freeze here to show you widely scattered mostly light showers. most of us it will probably just be cloudy and we'll get a shower from time to time. then it all clears out get some sun. monday here comes another one. so that by monday afternoon, the potential for widely scattered light showers, but as we tell you computer models on the first few storms of the season generally are, you know, they are trying to wake up from their summer hibernation so we'll see what's really going to happen. in the meantime there's a chance of showers tomorrow. almost certainly it will get

colder and windy, as well. winds will be picking up out of the southwest. another chance coming into the bay area late monday and tuesday before it warms up again and goes sunny by next thursday. the 49ers playing the cowboys and it shouldn't be too big a factor. it will be overcast and a few sprinkles are possible but still fairly mild weather and hardly strictly bluegrass which i think we have mentioned 59 degrees and potential for showers tomorrow in san jose. the rock 'n roll half marathon mostly cloudy skies and 68. finally back in san francisco, could be a few showers around for the castro street fair. bundle up, though, by crafts. standards it's going to be chilly. overnight -- bundle up, though, by california standards it's going to be chilly. overnight, 68 for concord. chilly especially in the north bay. san francisco manages 12 degrees below normal tomorrow. on the south bay, we are going to be looking at temperatures mostly in the mid-60s. and slight tendency toward upper 60s in the east bay. cloudy skies winds and a chance

now, the white house is steg in to help. the bay area as you know is known for expensive housing costs among other things and now the white house is stepping in to help. as kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran explains, the federal government hopes a special toolkit can lead to more affordable housing. >> reporter: the housing crisis is a familiar story in the bay area. it's too expensive and there's not enough of it. now the white house is getting involved calling out the bay area for not having the right tools in place to generate enough affordable housing. >> we can work together to break down rules that stand in the way of building new housing and that keep families from moving to growing dynamic cities. >> reporter: the white house published what it's calling a housing development toolkit to help. >> the federal government has retracted from recognizing housing and urban issues for many, many years but now starting to see that the country is reurbannizing and housing is the number one

issue. >> reporter: peter cohen is the codirector of san francisco's council of community housing organizations. >> the state of california, san francisco has produced more affordable housing than any other city over the last five or six years. >> reporter: the housing development toolkit calls for cities to update zoning laws and streamline development approval processes claiming strict regulations are forcing more people to live farther away from where they work. peter says the toolkit is nice in theory. but in reality, the housing crisis is not one size fits all. >> policies coming down from on high whether they're california or now from the white house treat all jurisdictions as though they have the same problems, acting the same way and they have the same tools and resources. it's not true. it's overly simplistic. >> reporter: peter told me right now, in san francisco, there have been 17,000 units approved to be built. it's just the financing that's the issue. he also added that the city has already enacted some of the

white house suggestions including licensing in law units and getting rid of parking restrictions. cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> that toolkit proposes $300 million to be allocated for housing grants to help cities update its housing laws. we heard about the email hack into yahoo. you might think i don't have yahoo email account but you might have been affected by it anyway. consumerwatch reporter julie watts on the widening fallout from one of the biggest hacks in history. >> reporter: we're hearing complaints from at&t customers who merged their yahoo email and at&t accounts and say they now can't change the hacked password. we're also hearing some at&t customers who never had a yahoo account at all may have also been compromised. when art heard about the massive yahoo data breach he tried to change his password. a week later he is still trying. >> it wouldn't allow me to do it. >> reporter: like many, art's yahoo email is merged with his

at&t account an option that at&t offered as a convenience that is not so convenient right now. >> i could change the at&t password. but it turned out that that did not affect the yahoo password. >> for people not to be able to change their passwords right away is dangerous. >> reporter: as she says, art isn't the only at&t customer struggling to change their yahoo password and even worse? >> some people might have yahoo mail accounts and not realize it. >> reporter: she explains customers with at&t or sbc global email addresses may also be affected even if they never had a yahoo email address. >> when they set up at&t account with broadband or other services, they had the option to create an email account that was running through a yahoo server. >> reporter: that option dates back to a 15-year-old partnership between at&t and yahoo and that may leave some at&t customers with a false sense of security their password is safe. in a statement, at&t says yahoo is notifying all potentially affected customers and take the extra step of sending an additional reminder to those

customers to change their passwords. so neither at&t nor yahoo could say how many people without yahoo email addresses were affected. >> incredible. >> reporter: art at least knows he is parts of the hack. he has successfully unmerge his two accounts. you will find that information on how to on our website. if you have an at&t account or really any account, bottom line, you should immediately change your password just to be safe. in the newsroom, julie watts, kpix 5. lawmakers are now investigating why it took yahoo two years to report the massive data breach compromising half a billion accounts. netflix customers had to put their binge watching on hold today because of a massive outage. it started around noon and thousands of customers complained to netflix online. the company admitted it was having issues with streaming. the problem was solved a couple of hours later. can you imagine you're right in the middle of your episode! >> you're watching the giants

game and all of a sudden it goes out. >> always back to sports. >> all right. the giants control their own destiny. just win and they're in. but that's no easy task with the division rival in town. they shut down clayton kershaw on the mound. this little guy everyone know the giants magic number is two. ty blach freezes three straight dodgers to strike out the side the first time he did that in his career. bottom of the 5th inning, angel pagan takes clayton kershaw deep to left field. he gets the friendly hop off the top of the fence. 12th homer for the year for pagan. gives the giants a 1-0 lead. 7th inning, brandon crawford with a comebacker off kershaw and deflects to turner who throws it down the right field line. pagan scores from first to give the giants some insurance. and it proved to be more than enough for ty blach. he strikes out six over eight shutout innings and had two

hicks. he had his first career win as the giants beat the dodgers 3- 0. meanwhile, in st. louis, the cardinals fell behind 3-0 but they rallied. the card on top and the ace with his 30th homer of the year 23rd since the all star break and st. louis beats pittsburgh 4-3. >> the mets are headed back to the play-offs. new york beat philadelphia 5-3 to clinch the top wildcard spot. michael with the nice sliding catch to end the game. the mets will host either the giants or cardinals on wednesday. so here's what it all means. the giants can clinch the second wildcard spot with a win, or cardinals loss tomorrow. if the giants lose and the cardinals win, they will play a tie breaker game on monday in st. lose. and they want to avoid that as much as they can. they want to get the wildcard spot and play wednesday against the mets next week in new york. >> the dodgers would love to foil that plan. >> of course they would. but you know.

12 homes have been destroyed along with 16 buildings. no word on what caused the fire. but firefighters expect to have it under control by monday. building inspectors and parishioners are taking stock of damage from a fire in berkeley. yesterday's fire devastate pilgrim hall, which held offices, a library and a classroom. but the chapel is intact but water damage is causing the ceiling to call. hillary clinton and donald trump have light schedules this weekend while their running mates prepare for a debate on tuesday. at the same time, there's renewed concern about hackers disrupting the november election. brook silva-braga more on cyber security and how both presidential candidates are now using social media. reporter: hackers have gained access to some state voting systems and have taken steps to potentially attack many others according to homeland security secretary jeh johnson in a letter saturday. he revealed 21 states have turned to his department for help. they have not found evidence of any manipulation of voting

information. >> who gets up at 3:00 in the morning --[ laughter ] >> --to engage in a twitter attack? >> reporter: the campaign is also being waged online. friday evening hillary clinton said donald trump's early- morning twitter rant against a former miss universe proved he is temperamentally unfit to be president. then saturday morning she launched her own string of 3 a.m. tweets calling for an expansion of the national service program americorps. trump responded by tweeting that clinton was nasty to bernie sanders supporters when she talked about young voters during a february fundraiser. audio of the event was recently leaked. >> some are new to politics completely. they are children of the great recession and they are living in their parents' basement. >> reporter: clinton's returns to the trail monday in ohio. trump is in pennsylvania tonight. brook silva-braga, for cbs news, new york. >> in that leaks recording clinton also talked about how

young people just out of school are unhappy with their job opportunities and maybe drawn to the idea of a political revolution. well, the vice-presidential debate is tuesday. you can watch it live right here on kpix 5 at 6 p.m. a 6-year-old boy injured in a school shooting in south carolina this week has died. jacob hall had been in critical condition after he was shot in the leg. another student and a first grade teacher were also injured after a 14-year-old boy opened fire on a playground. he has been charged with murder and three counts of attempted murder. protestors gathered to remember the unarmed black man killed by police in the san diego suburb. hundreds of people attended a rally in el cajon before marching to the police station. religious leaders talk about the need for better officer training. a local business association has recommended that stores and restaurants downtown stay closed for the weekend. >> like it came -- they are

going to be shut. she is scared to death at the salon one of the gals with her business. we are closing tomorrow because it's going to be trouble. she is already anticipating problem. >> yesterday, police released video of the 38- year-old man. a still frame shows him pointing a device at an officer just before he was shot. seattle seahawks player doug baldwin says he has received death threats after supporting colin kaepernick's protest against police brutality. baldwin also called for a review of training policies for police officers in the country. in an interview with "60 minutes sports," baldwin says besides the threats, he will not stay silent despite the threats. since all, kaepernick has protested bee refusing to stand for the national anthem at nfl games. a bill signed by california governor jerry brown this week could save children's lives. dave lopez explains how it involves a simple alarm being placed on school buses across

the state. >> the signing of this bill is a warm hug from heaven. >> reporter: the mother of paul lee on the day that governor brown in sacramento signed into law bill sb1072. better known as the paul lee school bus safety law. >> this seat right here is simple $150. >> reporter: beginning with the school year 2018, every school bus in the state will have to have this safety device, an alarm system. had it been in place last september, paul lee a 19-year- old special needs student with autism and was nonverbal no doubt would be alive today. [ beep ] [ beep ] >> reporter: the sound of the alarm, a bus driver will now have to get out from behind the wheel, walk to the back of the bus, press a switch before he can turn the engine off or open the doors. >> we failed to protect paul. >> reporter: as he did every day, lee boarded the bus to go to school but he never got off

the bus. instead, he remained on the bus in the bus yard all day windows rolled up 90-degree heat. and by the time he was found nine hours later, he was dead. according to the evidence, lee wasn't even laying down in the seat that day. he was sitting up. according to the evidence, the bus driver simply didn't either look in the mirror or look back. he didn't look at all. lee was almost 6 feet tall 200 pounds. and the driver simply didn't see him. >> paul, i love you. i miss you. i'm so proud of you. see you in heaven. >> reporter: the driver who left paul lee behind faces criminal charges. and if convicted nine years in state prison. from whit yes, dave lopez, kpix 5, from whittier. a college classroom full of students had to be evacuated after a student's cell phone ignited in his back pockets. nobody is was hurt. the experience as you can imagine was shocking for the

owner. we have the story. >> out of nowhere a giant puff of smoke and a smell of like burned plastic. >> reporter: all of that had come from the back pocket of darren, where he typically keeps his cell phone while in class at the mount laurel campus in burlington county. >> it's the hole. >> reporter: where he used to keep it. >> i stood up. it was burning my leg. as i flinched up i noticed i was smoking and i threw the phone on the ground. it lit up into flames and then i kicked it down made the fire go rout. >> reporter: by all accounts his cell phone had simply ignited. >> super embarrassing. the whole class was evacuated. >> reporter: darren says he had his iphone 6 plus for about 6 months and that it's been working normally. earlier this month, samsung suspended their galaxy note 7
