12:21 pm
it is friday. time to check in with our pet expert dr. jill chase. we are tackling a topic that pet owners face that could start as a silent problem. first, i want to introduce "christmas." >> she has been on many times before and she is so comfortable. [ laughter ] >> i know. she is great. she lost it here. we should put her on the payroll. [ laughter ] >> let's talk about the problem that can start up silent. >> right. we are hearing the part of urinary bladder crystals in cats and i want to tell the story about bruno who was adopted about a client of mine from the humane society, seemed fine, everything was good, and then one day she peed on the floor about a year after they had her and it was brown and it was brown because there was blood in the urine. when we checked, she had tons of urinary bladder crystals. so what that means is that the wall of the urinary bladder becomes very thick, it's very painful, inflamed, uncomfortable. it's completely treatable and now she feels great. the reason we talk about this
12:22 pm
is i would say in my experience about 30% of dogs and cats have this problem. and often times as you were mentioning it's silent so they seem fine, right? but they might be peeing maybe more than they should beer straining to me and the owners think they are marking but they are just feeling like they need to pee all the time. it's almost like having sandpaper along the lining your bladder wall. so i wanted to bring it up because it's not something that owners often find necessarily until their cat or dog starts urinating inappropriately and then we find it at that point. >> so that's something to definitely look for. thank you so much. you might see blood in the urine, too. >> yes. sometimes that's the first time. sometimes more drinking more to pee more. >> thank you, dr. jill. >> you're welcome. >> thank you, "christmas." if you have a question about your pet's health and well-being, just email pets@kpix.com, and we'll have our pet expert give you an answer every friday right here at noon.
