live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix 5. a frantic scene dozens of people in the water after their boat capsizes on the bay. >> there were kids and family in the water. >> they did have help. bystanders taking action to help get them out. i'm betty. yule yet and brian are -- jute yet and brian are -- jewel yet and brian are off tonight. >> kpix 5 talked to the good samaritans who stepped into help. >> it was kind of chaos. the boat was going down. >> it was on its side and then flipped all the way over. a lot of people were clinging to the hull. >> this gopro video captured by a person or a fishing boat. they were on their way back from the blue angel show.

there were several adiments and children on the goat -- adults and children on the boat. a 4-year-old and his father were trapped and one person had to swim down to save them. the little boy wasn't breathing by the time he was pulled out. >> there was one child wh a citizen started cpr on. >> it was heart wrenching when you see the baby getting cpr. that was a hard part. >> passengers nearby tried to hill p. . . >> -- help. >> we're yelling at them telling them to put on life jackets. >> nearby bystanders were critical. >> they transferred those people to fire boats, to the police boats. and were able to get everybody back and accounted for. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused the boat to sink. >> we had 30 people in the

water on one of the days with more boats than any other. this is a lot of good fortune and good luck. >> the 4-year-old that needed cpr was taken to the general hospital with life-threatening injuries. last we heard he was critical but stable. there were five other adults and two children also hospitalized. in san francisco kpix 5. >> by law children must be wearing life vests at all times on the boat. it's not clear whether the children or adults today had them on. tonight police are mourning the death of two palm springs officers shot and killed in the line of duty. fellow officers stood outside the office as their bodies were carried away. the suspected gunman is on the loose. lesley zerebny and jose vega were killed today. one other officer was injured.

police have surrounded the home of the suspected shooter. reporter jeff is there with new details. >> tonight swat members sent in at least two robots as they work to bring in a cop killer who opened fire on officers jose vega and lesley zerebny. their coworkers consoled each other outside a hospital. jaun watched as police tried to save one of their own. >> i saw the policewoman in the trunk of the car. and then the other two police he took her out of the trunk and put him on the ground. and then he started giving cpr. >> the two officers along with a third answered a disturbance call saturday afternoon. the police chief choked back tears as he said a man threatened to shoot and then opened fire. >> it was a simple family disturbance. and he elected to open fire on

the guardians of the the city. >> officer vega was a veteran working overtime. >> 35 years in still pushing a patrol car for our community to make it better. on a day he wasn't scheduled to work. >> and lesley zerebny came back to work after giving birth four months ago. >> here we have a wonderful, young, dedicated female officer. she pressed forward every day to make it better for everyone else. >> a woman who lives across the street told us her neighbor told her the son had a gun and he wanted to shoot police. soon after the man walked into his home she heard gunshots. she told us the father said his son suffered mental problems but jaun says that -- juan says that doesn't said like the guy he knows. >> nice guy. nice people like i said.

>> par medics have been on -- paramedics have been on standby and police are not telling us the suspects name and they're not willing to say if anyone in the home was injured. in palm spring, kpix 5. police investigating another deadly police shooting in modesto. officer shot and killed a 53- year-old woman while responding to reports of a family disturbance. a woman armed with knives confronted the officers in the street this morning. they say she refused to put them down and charged at them with the knives. they used a taser and baen bags before -- bean bags before shooting her. she died at the officer. all three officers involved are on leave. investigators are looking for the gunman in a deadly shooting in san francisco's south market district. police were called to 6th and notoma streets. they found a man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. he died at the hospital.

no word on a suspect. a san jose community in mourning. they are mournging the death -- mourning the death of an elderly woman beaten to death known as miss flow. >> -- miss flo. >> we are hurting. without question our hearts are broken. >> for nearly a month family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers hoped that miss flo would return home. >> she was fighting for her life. >> this morning her nephew learned she passed away turning the case against zachary quin into a murder investigation. >> i hope he goes to prison for quite some time. >> as news spread of the 88- year-old's death flowers and candles grew outside her home. >> i cried. i mean, what do you? she was a great person. i enjoyed talking to her. >> chris has lived next door to

presidential campaign in this debate. if he bombs in this debate more republicans are going to leave and the republican party is going to withdraw further from supporting him. >> you can watch the debate here on kpix 5. our live coverage starts at 6:00. hurricane matthew is weakening tonight. it's now a category one and is blamed for 11 deaths in the u.s. but it is still moving up the atlantic coast. it's causing record flooding in north carolina. it's also pummelled south carolina, florida, and georgia. reporter scott mclain that has the latest from savannah. >> it's still a very serious situation. >> a downgraded category one hurricane matthew made landfall over south carolina's central coast between charleston and myrtle beach. >> it's starting to pass certain areas but all areas remain dangerous. we have to remain cautious.

>> as matthew moves towards north carolina officials are warning people to stay vigilant. >> i'm extremely concerned since this hurricane has been downgraded that people will let up their guard. and it's these types of hurricanes that settle over our state that have caused the most damage and loss of life and destruction. >> in savannah, georgia very strong winds uprooted trees and took downpour lines. heavy rains swamped roads. rainfall totals are expected to be more than 12 inches in some areas. in florida matthew churned up the water. unbelievable amounts of beach erosion. the clean up is beginning after matthew battered areas like daytona beach and jacksonville. dozens of homes and businesses have been damaged. and more than 800,000 people are without power. hurricane matthew claimed lives

new york city. officials say a commuter trn derailed after crashing inta dozens injured after a fiery train crash in new york city. it derailed after crashing into a work train after 9:00 tonight. it caused one of the trains to catch fire. fortunately none of the injuries are considered life threatening. no chances after a grass fire broke out. flames were spotted around 3:00 this afternoon in a grassy area on the boulevard. about 75 firefighters from across the county worked from the ground and air to keep the fire from growing more than an
