after he was shot in the head. police tell us- it's a miracle he's still alive. juliette a san francisco police officer is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head. police say it's a miracle he is still alive. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. kpix 5's jackie ward is in san francisco with new details on the officer. jackie. >> reporter: brian, a close family friend says that kevin downs is the officer who was shot last night. and this is where the chase of the suspect ended. it's a quiet neighborhood that doesn't see a lot of police action so we talked to the people to live in the area who said they were very concerned last night. >> officer down! all units respond! this is a 406! >> reporter: kevin downs an officer who has been with the sfpd for two years is still in

critical condition today after being shot in the head last night. he is recovering here at san francisco general hospital. >> he had surgery to remove fragments from his brain and he has partial paralysis on the side of his body from the shot to the head. >> reporter: interim police chief toney chaplin says downs is lucky to be alive today because the bullet was just one centimeter away from hitting the main artery in the center of his head. >> shots fired, shots fired! >> reporter: catching the suspect who shot downs was not easy. after shooting downs near everglades drive, the armed man led police on a foot chase from the lakeshore shopping center through stern grove. leon sherman and his dad were driving home as this happened. >> there's a cop and my dad thought that he was getting pulled over. but then we saw them everywhere. and it was kind of freak over. >> reporter: these students from sf state were on the way home, too. >> down 29th we sar a barricade

of cop cars surrounding the area. we heard flash-bangs go off and multiple rounds fired. so it was a little weird. >> there were like 12 cop cars like a bust. they said it was safe. i had never seen anything like that. >> reporter: downs is one of the best officers at the taraval station and although his injury is very serious, he is expected to survive. now, the person who shot him is also recovering from a gunshot wound at sf general. we still don't know any details about this person, his name or the charges that will be filed against him. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. san francisco mayor ed lee released a statement on the shooting today saying each day the members of the san francisco fire department face uncertainty and danger with the purpose of protecting our city and its residents. my thoughts remain with the officer and his family. police interrupted a wedding celebration at stern grove as they chased the suspected shooter through the park. the group was put on lockdown

until it was all over. one man who was working the event tweeted, it was a little worrisome when the s.w.a.t. team came down the road with their assault rifles. they got the suspect. the weather in the bay area dangerous winds wreaking havoc on the treasure island music festival right now. at least one woman was injured after a vending machine landed on her! you can see paramedics wheeling her out on a stretcher. organizers evacuated the vendor area as winds picked up. on top of that all acts are being pushed back an hour to make up for the lost time. the festival will now run through midnight. it's not going to help much. there's more on the way. taking a live look now at the golden gate bridge, the first major storm to hit the bay area in months, strong winds heavy rain expected to last throughout the weekend. kpix 5 hi-def doppler shows heavy rain moving in over sonoma and marin. we'll pull back to show that you more rain is behind that initial blast as well as a few showers and thundershowers. you can see the lightning bolts

and the map indicating actual strikes. in the meantime, this is what much of the bay area will look like as the night goes on. it is all wheeling around a deep low off washington state. so tonight an inch of rain, wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour in bay area peaks. we'll have the complete forecast in just a few minutes. despite the tricky weather, caltrans carried out the latest leg of the old bay bridge implosion today. [ implosion ] >> it took less than three seconds to blow up. caltrans says 8,000 pounds of explosives were detonated but due to environmental monitoring it had relatively low impact on marine life. the next detonation is scheduled to two weeks from today. we are getting breaking news right now out of san diego. at least four people are dead after a car flew off the coronado bay bridge and landed on a crowd of people gathered below. it happened a little over an hour ago at chicano park. police say people at the park

were attending a festival. it's unclear what caused the door veer off the bridge. there's an uproar in oakland's chinatown today over lyrics to a rap song. kpix 5's da lin explains some think it's play-by-play for how to target and rob chinese families. ♪[ music ] [ unintelligible rap lyrics ] >> reporter: he raps about money and women, pretty common among rappers. focused on state races. sanders appeared at rallies for state senate candidate jane kim and yes on prop 51 events. he joined several healthcare groups calling for an end to price gouging by big pharma. >> there is no rational reason why the pharmaceutical industry continues to rip off the people of this country and charge us the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. >> sanders has made a cam pan aide for the pro prop 61 campaign that requires the state to negotiate drug prices. opponents say an independent analysis concluded it could cost taxpayers millions more. the presidential candidates were both in the northeast today but only one was campaigning. reporter brook silva-braga on their day as we head into the final weeks of the 2016 election. >> reporter: donald trump denied a growing list of accusations he improperly touched women and said their stories were evidence of

a problem with the trains' engines has delayed the launch of the service until next spring. officials had planned to re north bay commuters will have to wait until next year for the smart train. an engine problem delayed it until next spring. officials planned to start the train service before the end of the year. but all 14 of the railcars will have to be redesigned. the train will run between santa rosa and san rafael. bart showed off the train of the future at pleasant hills. the three car train is a fleet of 1,000 cars that are on order. bart says when they go into operation soon, passengers will enjoy a quieter ride with

better air-conditioning and more comfortable seats. a shooting at a restaurant overnight in los angeles left three men dead and a dozen people wounded. it happened about 12:30 a.m. on a residential street west of downtown l.a. an argument escalated to gunfire from multiple weapons. investigators are examining shell casings and other evidence at the restaurant operating out of a converted house. people who live in the area say it's not a violent neighborhood. >> i'm actually shocked to hear this around this area because we really don't have any problems with anybody. this is that type of community that everyone knows everyone and we're pretty much like family. to hear that it's shocking. >> police are questioning two possible suspects. l.a. mayor eric garcetti says in a statement, we cannot tolerate these tragedies multiplying in communities across america. well, despite our rain, a trio of wildfires is burning in the sierra. one is blamed for destroying 22 homes north of carson city,

nevada. hundreds of people have been evacuated near lake tahoe. and a major road into reno is closed. nevada's governor has declared a state of emergency. hundreds of firefighters are working on the most dangerous fire in the washoe valley. several bay area fire teams are helping fight those fires in nevada. they have battled wet weather conditions as they drove through the sierra yesterday. crews from alameda county, fremont, hayward, livermore, pleasanton and other agencies are now on the fire lines. the national weather service confirmed it was an ef- 2 tornado that was captured on camera in oregon. incredibly, one of two to hit the state in the past 24 hours. the northwest has been socked by severe weather. homes have been damaged, trees knocked down, and power knocked out by winds of 75 miles an hour. the worst news, they are getting more rain tonight. and still ahead, a south san francisco bakery closing its doors. why it was considered to be an iconic business in the community.

the low off the north coast. you can see the stronger cells right now approaching mount vaca just to the east of santa rosa and about to spill in the napa valley. it already has. heavy rain off the peninsula. low pressure that's off washington state means that more rain and wind and it was a gusty day today in the bay area with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour, could get stronger overnight as this heads south. it's not a cold system yet. 70 degrees now in concord. oakland 69. livermore 69. flash flood watches are posted through tomorrow night especially for the burn areas of the soberanes fire in the santa cruz mountains. coastal flood advisory strong rip currents and large shore breaks possible with a sneaker waves threat so have a care coastside. wind advisories are posted as well through tomorrow afternoon. it's going to be a windy saturday night. downed trees and power lines may happen around the bay area. futurecast shows things ease up in the small hours of the morning but then tomorrow afternoon they are back up in

the 20-mile-an-hour range for the winds. the next few hours we'll see wind and rain. futurecast, we have frozen this at 9 a.m. on sunday morning and you can see that there's still scattered showers around especially in the south bay. that hasn't picked up much in the way of rain. it's mostly north and central bay. tomorrow at 9:00 p.m. you can see widely scattered showers. so we are now going to be in a showery regime after tonight. expect sunday to get wet from time to time. but behind all of this after a lingering chance on monday morning, this is tuesday now at 6 a.m., high pressure builds in, we'll go sunny. so expect to get wet tonight as much as 1.5" in the santa cruz mountains. they have flash flood watches, inch up in the north bay. it will be rainy and windy tonight. rain spreads south not nearly as much in the south bay as in the north bay. wind gusts as high as 50 miles an hour. showers tomorrow just in time for the raiders to be playing. on-and-off rain as they take on
