students are injured. and the search is on... for the suspects. now at noon a shooting rocked a bay area high school. students injured and the search is on for the suspects. good afternoon, i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at june jordan school in san francisco's excelsior district where things are slowly getting back to normal. anne. >> reporter: school is in session a day after this shooting, even though the suspects in this case with still on the loose. the suspects are not affiliated with the school and they said they thought it was very important for everybody to be together today. >> we are going to get through this, good or bad we come

together. >> reporter: chalked messages greeted students coming to june jordan high school this morning one day after four students were shot in the parking lot. >> we are going to heal from this and we have to continue to use compassion. >> reporter: school had just let out when the gunfire erupted and three students ran into the school bleeding. >> i was getting ready to leave the school at 9:15, everybody running. >> reporter: the school was placed on lockout to make sure there was no active shooter on site. >> we did the best that we could and we provided a safe place immediately. >> reporter: four suspects were seen running from the school in san francisco's excelsior district. >> it was shocking. it was very shocking. >> reporter: rubio knew the four students who were shot. >> i was very closed to, um, one particular student name cheyenne. >> reporter: the only girl who was shot was the most badly injured. shot in the torso. police say she is in serious condition today. >> this is a really difficult time for this community and for this enabled. >> reporter: since this school

is focused on social justice, students and staffers blame larger issues at play. >> what we will continue to do is continue to get to the root causes of why young men feel so hopeless in this world and this society that they would take another young man's life so quickly. >> reporter: all four of the students are expected to survive including the one who didn't run into the school for help the one that ended up 2.5 miles away at the bayview police department. police say that at least one of these students was directly targeted in this attack. live in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. investigators are looking into a bizarre blast in oakland. witnesses told police that a man in a wheelchair entered the san antonio neighborhood health center on international boulevard just before 6:30 last night then detonated what appeared to be a pipe bomb. authorities are calling it an apparent suicide. no other injuries were reported. and a bomb squad swept the scene and deputies searched for other explosive devices just in

case. new at noon, two firefighters and two civilians are hurt after a natural gas explosion rocked the commercial district in portland, oregon. it happened around 10:00 this morning. people in the area say the blast blew out windows and it felt like an earthquake. investigators now say workers at a construction site hit a gas line before the explosion. we are now just hours way from a third and final presidential debate of 2016. donald trump and hillary clinton will go head to head in las vegas. cbs reporter weijia jang shows us where the candidates stand going into the debate. >> reporter: hillary clinton and donald trump will square off tonight in their third and final presidential debate. >> i think generally, the third debate historically matters the least. >> reporter: that's because with just 20 days left until the election, it's going to be hard for the candidates to change the current momentum. clinton now has a lead in the latest national polls. >> you can't believe anything you see. i don't even believe the polls. >> reporter: trump, who once used to praise the polls, now

email scandal. weijia jang, cbs news, las vegas. >> donald trump may be calling for voters to look for fraud on election day. one bay area county is assuring people it won't let it happen here. kpix 5's maria medina is live in san jose where santa clara county leaders had a say a few minutes ago. >> reporter: leaders held a press conference today ahead of the presidential debate because they believe that there's going to be more talk of voter fraud. they say that doesn't belong here in this county and won't be "tolerated"! >> the suggestion of election rigging and voter fraud is completely unfounded and ridiculous. we don't take this lightly. >> reporter: the message from santa clara county leaders today, don't be afraid of intimidation at the polls. >> we're afraid they discourage voters to come to the polls afraid of harassment. >> reporter: the registrar of voters held the news conference because the election is stolen and rigged.

>> you have to get everybody you know and you have to watch your polling booths. so go over and watch. >> reporter: his calls to get voters to look for fraud at the polls causing concern at the polls nationwide. >> i'm sure there's voter fraud. >> reporter: this woman who voted early said if she wouldn't be out of state on election day she would be out at the polls looking for wrongdoing. >> in some states, we have some county where there's 100% for one person, nothing -- the odds of that 100% for one person is impossible. >> i don't think, you know, we need to worry because whatever trump says i don't agree. >> reporter: but voters say there's nothing to worry about. right now, politicians are saying there's no evidence a wave of supporters are planning to hit the polls to warn of voter fraud and even if they do, they are not allowed to talk to voters inside polling places. monique's advice, whatever you vote and no matter what anyone

says, stand by it. >> they should know what they believe in. >> reporter: and there are more than 800 polling places here in santa clara county. they are going to be staffed with professional and citizen observers to make sure everything goes smoothly but again, the public is invited to watch the process as long as they don't intimidate or harass voters. live in santa clara county, maria medina, kpix 5. you can watch tonight's presidential debate on kpix 5 at 6:00. quick thinking neighbors helped three people escape from this burning home in san jose overnight. the fire started around 11 a.m. on anselmo avenue. one neighbor says that he was about to go to sleep when he heard popping noises next door and noticed smoke. that's when he and another neighbor hopped a fence and helped pull the victims out. a fourth person was trapped inside and crews got him out. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a few hours ago raiders owner mark davis made his pitch

with luggage. the government already requires carriers refund checked bag fees when luggage is lost. the new rules would go a step further and include refunds for bags that are substantially delayed. also, when it comes to flight delays, airlines would not only have to report their own delays, but their regional partners, as well. and there could be more transparency when you buy a ticket online. sites that sell airline tickets would be prohibited from favoring one airline and not showing all available ticket prices. not everyone is happy with the proposal. airlines for america, a pro- airline trade organization, cautioned the rules could harm customers by reregulating how airlines sell their products, driving up the cost of air travel. some of the new rules will take effect in the coming months. others have yet to be finalized. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. checking in on wall street now, the dow is up about 72 points. starting today, you can

returning to the far reaches of the north bay. here's our futurecast as we walk you through the afternoon and evening hours. we are clear through the starry nights, dropping into the 40s and 50s. then out over the open waters you see the beginning of the fog that's going to skim the coastline by friday bringing down temperatures at the beaches. but keeping us inland still warm. slightly above normal. our satellite and radar suggest that is this area of high pressure right here is returning us more to the northwest flow which is an offshore condition resulting in warming at the coast through our inland areas. so while we are at 70 at rockaway beach today, just about similar in the sacramento area, high 50s common around the high sierra after dropping into the 30s early this morning. 75 degrees in fresno. sunrise at 7:23. by the time is sets tonight, we'll shave off two minutes and 11 seconds off our daylight hours. so the days are getting shorter. today in san jose we are

researchers at u- c-l-a have found: that *genes may play a role.. in which women will experience hot flashes during in a first of its kind study researchers found genes may play a role in which women will experience hot flashes during menopause. the findings show women who had gene variance affecting part of the brain that regulates estrogen were more likely to have hot flashes. the study was published today in the journal menopause. a type of therapy new to the u.s. can help reduce hair loss associated with breast cancer treatment. it's called cold caps. cbs reporter barry peterson shows us how it works and why some patients think it's worth both the cost and the effort. >> it takes an hour. >> there's nothing unusual about the chemotherapy drugs mary is getting at this denver clinic. >> your chin strap.

>> reporter: what's unusual is on her head a cold cap chilled with dry ice at 30 below. as it warnings a new one is strapped on tightly every 20 to 30 minutes. this goes on for 8 hours. >> it's not really pain. it is an overall feeling of i just want this off my head. >> reporter: in the most recent study, roughly 66% of women kept more than half of their hair. one theory is that it constricts blood flow keeping the chemo from representing the scalp. another is that it freezes many of the hair follicles and the chemo is simply shut out. there are concerns that blocking the chemotherapy could let cancer spread to the scalp. is it work? >> it is working. i have the majority of my hair. >> reporter: she gets moral support from her husband. yes. that's me. we are together on this

journey. why is maintaining your hair important to a woman? >> i think it gives you a sense of control. it gives you a piece of dignity. >> reporter: using these caps can cost a patient thousands of dollars out of pocket because they are rented by the month. this version circulates coolant through one camp called digni camp. it was approved by the food and drug administration last december but not covered by insurance. women can't save their hair without knowing about the options. and most doctors are hesitant to talk about it. i'm happy to report that my wife mary nell had her last chemotherapy four months ago. her hair looks as good as it did through chemo. barry peterson, cbs news, new york. >> it doesn't work for all drug or cancer in the blood like leukemia.
