how, um, the rain is coming off the ocean from the west, lifting up north to the east. this is all tapping into subtropical moisture, very showery. we have a band of activity right now over the 680 and 84, it's going to be drifting toward the 580/680 corridor which is always messy in the rain. the rain intensifies during the evening commute. the rain will get harder. the winds will increase out of the south to 20 gusts up to 35 miles per hour. there is a potential for a thunderstorm. and as you take a look at this here, you'll see that the rain will continue through tomorrow morning's commute. another cold front slices through the bay area on saturday evening through sunday. we'll tell you about a third round of showers heading this way coming up later on in this newscast. people along the crows getting ready for rain, wind and big waves.

kpix 5's anne makovec is live in pacifica. anne. >> reporter: yeah. we haven't really seen any of those things yet. but we know it is acomin'! the ocean has been churning here behind me as everybody along the coastline gets ready for a big storm to come. as another round of rain hits the bay area, wave after wave crashes into the pacifica pier. >> there's always going to be concerns with any storm that comes our way. >> reporter: but the pacifica public works department has been preparing for months shoring up its coastline after a state of emergency last winter. the cliffs were eroding. and part of the seawall at beach boulevard gave way. >> this storm here, we are concerned about the amount of water, short period of time. >> reporter: so they have been cleaning the streets and gutters to make sure that water can drain freely and the city is warning wave watchers to not turn their backs to the ocean. >> it's beautiful. yeah. really nice. >> reporter: mary and roy are vacationing in pacifica from

sizes in silver and space gray. it's the thinnest lightest pro they ever made. they debuted an app for tv and ios that brings all shows and movies from a user's video app into one place. the tech giant reported this week an annual sales decline for the first time since 2001. whether the latest offerings will boost sales remains to be seen. a new study suggests that differences in how people are prosecuted in santa clara county depends on their race. kpix 5's maria medina looks at how the district attorney wants to change that. >> reporter: this is a hot issue nationwide. the santa clara district attorney wanted to answer the question, is our justice system fair to everyone? so we started looking at numbers from cases back in 2013 to 2015. and this is what his office found. 50% of latinos were charged with resisting arrest even though they are

only 26% of the population in santa clara county. 14% of blacks were charged with resisting arrest despite making up only 3% of the population. a psychologist in new york showed racial bias and prejudice by testing people who had to make a quick decision to shoot a white or black person holding a gun or harmless object. here is what he found. >> you are in the role of a police officer and what's found if the person who appears is black and they are holding a cell phone or soda can, people are more likely to accidentally shoot them than if they were white. >> reporter: the study also found latinos make up almost half of felony and misdemeanor arrests in santa clara county. again, even though they make up 26% of the population. so the d.a. says you know what? we can't resolve this issue with only one study. but he did present the numbers to community leaders yesterday and they say this starts the discussion. in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. gridlock on highway 101 will be the focus this evening as transportation experts

gather in san mateo county. traffic on the highway has worsened in recent years as the number of silicon valley jobs has grown. the proposed solution to be discussed is toll lanes and reconstruction of ramp connections. the hearing begins at 6:00 at san mateo city hall. people in central italy are trying to return to normal after strong earthquakes yesterday. no reports of any deaths or serious injuries. a 15th century church came down during the second quake that hit the village of tempe. the church had already been damaged during the august 24 earthquake that killed some 300 people. just a dozen days before election day and the major presidential candidates are busy trying to tilt swing states in their direction. hillary clinton is in winston- salem, north carolina, right now, with michelle obama. >> voting rights are at stake.

and if you care about this right and want to make sure our leaders of both parties do their part to protect and strengthen it, not clip away at it, you have to vote in this election. >> republican donald trump is also busy with television appearances and campaign events in ohio. earlier today, he questioned why the fbi director chose not to indict hillary clinton over her illegal use of a private email server while secretary of state. >> there's something going on. george. she's so guilty. >> also today, donald trump posted a message on twitter again suggesting the upcoming election is rigged against him. he referred to an unsubstantiated claim on social media that some machines in texas flipped trump votes to clinton votes. an airline pilot is on administrative leave today after being accused of being drunk before a flight in south

dakota. tsa noticed that the pilot, 38- year-old russell, smelled of alcohol and a breathalyzer test confirmed his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit for pilots .04%. another pilot ended up taking his place. the flight landed in salt lake city two hours late yesterday. russell duszak faces misdemeanor charges and a $2,000 fine and a year in jail. still ahead, marine mammal experts are trying to find out what to do with a whale dead in the bay area. the growing spectacle. >> and the creator of "star wars" so of course it's futuristic. our first look at designs for the george lucas museum that could be coming to the bay area. ,, ,,

twitter. the social media company announced today it plans to fire 9% of its global workforce about 350 workers. it's not clear how many the layoffs will be local. twitter has never turned a profit. several companies have looked into buying twitter but no takers so far. new at noon, we are getting our first look at competing plans for george lucas' museum of narrative art. after first struggling to lock down locations in san francisco and chicago, the billionaire is now considering treasure island for his museum. check out these renderings. it would hug the san francisco bay. the futuristic designs are from 40-year-old chinese architect [ non-english name ] lucas is also considering los angeles for his museum and he is reportedly set to decide on a final location in the next two to four months. >> for some reason i thought it would look like tatooine or something. rain. we have rounds of rain in the forecast for five days. this is our live hi-def doppler radar. as you can see, we are in a bit of a lull right now. we have a little bit of light rain in the neighborhoods of daly city right now around lakeview drive also brotherhood way, 87th street. this is gradually going north. meanwhile, across the bay, there's some light precipitation off 680 heading into the sunol area as you make tracks past castlewood into pleasanton. we have another little rain cell that's lining the shores or lining the sidewalks outside of 580 i should say. okay. here's our hi-def doppler radar. i like using this so you can see where the precipitation is coming from. and it's all from the front that's still offshore. all this is lifting north and east. it's tapping into a plume of moisture off the coast. so it has a lot of subtropical nature to it. at this particular time we do see over in the santa cruz mountains area, here you have santa cruz way over here, we going to see an inch of rain there over the next 24 hours. all this activity that wants to

lift up towards lexington hills. so plenty of rain still this afternoon but it will intensify and we'll see the winds pick up. mostly cloudy skies over san jose right now with the air temperatures at 65. muggy outside. winds have not been a factor yet. they have been under 10 miles per hour all over the area. what you need to know today, the rain and the winds pick up. we do have a chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening hours and more soaking rains this weekend. this is it. it's beautiful! this is the plume of moisture that streams all the way back to the eastern pacific that's been tapping into hurricane seymour and that has a lot of instability with it. so meanwhile, over the next five days, first of all, the subtropical moisture, then secondly we'll have a cold front slice through the bay area. here's your evening commute. you can see that we do have plenty of rain as it intensifies overnight hours. a chance of a thunderstorm. saturday the bulk of the day is dry. then more rain saturday night into sunday. and sunday with a colder air

day is going to be is with cluster tomatoes vine ripened on the cluster. it's getting colder going into the fall and winter and tomatoes and the fields will be gone until next year. so hothouse tomatoes are where it's at. pretty soon, not yet, but the cluster tomatoes are good all year round. this time of year i enjoy them. when you buy them, they are attached to the stems and vine. make sure it's green and the tomatoes redder the better. and, of course, they will to have the nice aroma from the vine and the tomatoes together. they smell like a backyard tomato. when you bring them home always store them, here's the key now, you have to store these tomatoes on the counter, always. never, ever store them in the refrigerator. if you store them in the refrigerator, you deplete the flavor and the nutritional value. cluster tomatoes in the market, great prices, make that caprese salad or any type of salad or

'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. your fresh grocer tony tantillo and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. ah so good. it's like the plot of a cooking show. the chef gets a mystery batch of ingredients and whips them up into a great mean. sharon chin introduces us to a san mateo woman who goes through a similar scenario almost every day in her service to others. she is this week's jefferson award winner. reporter: it's only 9 a.m. but chef ruby kaho was embroiled in dinner preparations. for the last 16 years, she has work at samaritan house, the antipoverty nonprofit in san mateo. >> this is catfish. >> reporter: as a full-time food services manager, she cooks up to 700 meals a day with the help of three dozen workers and volunteers like sonia peters. >> always have the time, never too busy to stop and help someone. >> reporter: the chief operating officer says ruby embodies the mission of neighbor helping neighbor.

>> she puts her heart and soul into every meal and really believes that we need to be here to support those in need in our area. >> i have the salt. >> reporter: using donations mostly from second harvest food bank and grocery stores ruby works her magic. so she has to design a meal using whatever comes in and sometimes she doesn't find out until the last minute. on this day, catfish and vegetables are plentiful. so -- >> i'm making gumbo so chop one case of celery for the day and you put there a lot of love. if you love what you do, you are good to go. >> reporter: it goes to shelters, day laborers, seniors and others in needs. ruby makes deliveries in her off hours. as a trained home health aide, she visits former volunteers with physical disabilities and assists with anything from bathing to cooking. >> they are elder people. you know, you help them out. sometimes you go by, they call me up, oh, even the --our mobile [ indiscernible ] call me, ruby, i don't have enough food. i'm hungry.
