fo ly running your realtime ca ptioner is linda marie macdonald. a san jose business now under investigation for possibly running an underground nightclub. this after a man was shot and left to die. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. it was at 4 a.m. on a business park on koll circle in san jose. kpix 5's maria medina was there as neighbors showed up to a crime scene. >> it's kind of shocking, nerve- wracking. >> reporter: a san jose business parking lot turned into a crime scene. nearly 2 dozen evidence markers paint the picture of the attack that nearly killed a man just steps outside this shop. >> i hope that they can get to the bottom of it and it won't happen again. >> reporter: san jose police arrived just after 4 a.m.

the two suspected shooters both men already gone. the victim driven to a nearby hospital. and now the question for business owners here? what was happening after hours in the industrial area on koll circle? sources believe an underground nightclub was in operation. in fact, darnell says a couple of weeks ago some of the neighboring business owners who stayed late one day started noticing unusual activity. >> you know, like 80 people hanging out in the parking lot at 2, 3 a.m. >> reporter: by daylight evidence of the crowd was gone until today leaving darnell and others who work here uncertain about their neighbor and what type of business was really being run. >> as a tenant here, as a working business, i wouldn't want, you know, establishments to come in after hour parties and events when we're not here because we don't know what goes on. >> reporter: the victim's

identity hasn't been released. he is expected to survive. as for the suspects, they were last seen leaving with several people in a blue or green minivan. in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. according to a police source, witnesses describe two suspects with ponytails. we have reached out to lavish events but haven't heard back. the chp is investigating another freeway shooting that left a person wounded. the gunfire erupted last night around 8:00 in richmond on westbound interstate 580 near the marina parkway exit. one person was hit and is now in the hospital. investigators are waiting to interview the victim to try to get an idea of who the shooter was. police believe the spate of freeway shootings that began last fall in the east bay is connected to feuds between street gangs. well, taking a live like outside we have some blue skies right now but more wet weather is in store for the weekend. the stage is being set by a potent blow from northern california that will head

southeast overnight spilling out rain ahead of it. the rain hasn't happened yet. the kpix 5 hi-def doppler is only beginning to pick up rain offshore and by the time -- and there they are -- by the time all is said and done tomorrow night, the north bay in the futurecast is forecast to have up to 2" of rain at most up in the hills but south of the golden gate not much more than than .75" except in the mountains. with rain ahead of us san francisco is looking for ways to keep everything flowing smoothly. in fact, they're looking for you -- well, not specifically jackie ward but she is out there live in the bayview to explain. hey, jackie. [ laughter ] >> reporter: hey, brian, hopefully not me. but it's a great cause. there's a lot of ground to cover in the city of san francisco. for six two-person crews to get to, they are in charge of keeping all of these drains clear but if you are sick of your neighborhood flooding, there is something you can do to prevent it from happening. san francisco public utility commission calls them drain heroes and as a thank you, the drain adopters got set up with what they need to continue

maintaining a clear storm drain. >> some people have pine needles. some people have litter. some have leaves. >> reporter: and all that stuff leads to clogged drains which causes ponding, puddling and flooding when a rainstorm rolls through. >> we really want people to help us out so we're all doing our part and together, we're going to be ready for the rain. >> reporter: cynthia pollack adopted seven drains near her home. and she has been keeping them clear for a year. she even named them. >> sugar cane drain, bus stop drain, profane drains. other drains. [ laughter ] >> reporter: it's a commitment she says isn't hard to keep. >> you just clean it after it rains again because more debris has been come about. >> they appreciate it. >> when it rains, we go to work. >> reporter: efren is one of the 12 people who run the city's contracts. he loves the job but every little bit helps. >> i must say having these people out here today, i'm

[ explosion ] >> 12,000 pounds of explosives blasted through the marine foundation of the east span of the old bay bridge today. traffic breaks during the implosion slowed down the commute. and bicycles were banned from the new path to yerba buena island during the blast. six more implosions are planned for next year and seven more in 2018. morgan hill police say a sexual assault suspect could face life in prison. damou evans was arrested in

august when a woman said he sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious. later seven more women came forward claiming he assaulted them, too. and because there are now multiple victims, he could get a life sentence if convicted. evans is in custody and is expected in court on november 9. police in campbell are trying to track down a suspected bank robber. surveillance photos show a suspect walking into a chase bank and up to a teller window yesterday. according to police, he said he had a gun but did not show any weapons. he is described as latino, 30 to 35 years old, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, last seen walking south on winchester boulevard. campaign 2016. the fbi's investigation into new emails that involve hillary clinton is dominating the presidential campaign this weekend. brook silva-braga tells us what the candidates are saying as well as the voters reporter: hillary clinton's campaign called fbi director james comey's letter

to congress long on innuendo and short on facts. comey wrote yesterday that new emails had been found related to clinton's use of a private email server but couldn't say if they were significant. >> it's pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election ... we've called on director comey to explain everything right away, put it all out on the table. >> reporter: the new emails were found on a laptop shared by clinton aide huma abedin and her estranged husband anthony weiner. he is being investigated for allegedly sending sexually explicit messages to a minor. cbs news has learned attorney general loretta lynch disagreed with comey's decision to notify congress about the new emails so close to election day. republican presidential nominee donald trump argued that is evidence of lynch's bias. >> there are those, and i happen to be one of them, who think hillary offered loretta

lynch a reappointment as attorney general. >> reporter: a poll taken before the announcement found most voters think clinton is a criminal with a use of a private server. you're an undecided voter from colorado. does this affect your vote? >> um, a little bit. i think i'm leaning towards trump. >> at this point, there's nothing they can do to turn off the people that support them. which is crazy if you think about it. >> reporter: early voting is already under way in dozens of states and more than 20 million votes are already been cast. brook silva-braga, for cbs news, new york. today clinton told the supporters in florida, quote, we can't let this election in the last 10 days be about the noise and the distractions. it's got to be about what kind of country we want. there's a problem with the mail in one east bay community. coming up, why some people are having to stay up late to get their deliveries. >> plus, a close call for american airlines passengers after their plane burst into flames on the runway. what investigators say may have triggered the fire. ,,,,,,,,,,,,

but now city inspectors say the work happened without the permits needed. the owner said they thought the developer got the permits. there's a problem with the mail in berkeley. some people say they are not getting the deliveries until midnight. kpix 5's cate caugiran on why the daily trip to the mailbox now requires a flashlight! >> i just wish that they would deliver my mail on time. that's all i want. reporter: bonnie works from home as a bookkeeper. she relies on usps for business. but lately, her mail has been late or not at all. >> if you can't depend on the mail coming at a certain time, then i can't get my work done with the mail that's supposed to come to me. >> reporter: the postal service says there are delivery issues in berkeley and other bay area cities. what's going on? usps says it's a combination of a spike in online shopping and not enough mail carriers. >> until somebody figures out how to email a sweater we're going to deliver it. >> reporter: right now there are about 163 mail carriers assigned to berkeley. that's up 12 from last year but

it's still not enough. usps says it plans to hire 19 more to try to keep up with the influx of deliveries. >> we feel that once we bring on an additional 19 employees we currently need to hire for berkeley we'll see our carriers delivering their mail in the prescribed time that they are supposed to deliver it. >> reporter: stephanie ross says her mail carrier told her, they have been working double shifts. >> there needs to be more funding from the feds for the postal service. i mean, this is a basic service we're paying for in our taxes. but they take it out on the laborers. i think it's really not right. i feel very, very sorry for the letter carriers. >> reporter: usps says on average, a mail carrier in berkeley will deliver to at least 500 addresses a day n berkeley, cate caugiran, kpix 5. a plane that caught fire before take-off in chicago had a dangerous engine failure. the american airlines jet went up in flames at o'hare international airport yesterday. 21 people were injured during the evacuation.

now a federal official tells the "associated press" the plane had what's called an uncontained engine failure. that's when parts break off and are spewed outside the engine. and ntsb investigators are now at the scene of another plane fire this one in fort lauderdale. the plane burst into flames yesterday after its landing gear collapsed. then a fireball exploded out of the side of the aircraft. fedex says the two pilots escaped down a rope ladder. autopsy results from miami marlins pitcher jose fernandez show that he had cocaine and alcohol in his body when he was killed in a boat crash. he and two friends were in a boat when it hit a miami beechjetty last month. both his friends were killed. not clear who was driving but the toxicology report shows they all had blood alcohol levels above the legal limit for driving. the boat was speeding when it crashed. . and still ahead, it could be one spooky halloween for

boy, that would be fun. >> it was a dark and stormy night. >> and the wolves were howling. what would bram stoker say? we have a low out there abeam san francisco that's going to push a cold front toward the coastline. it's going to take a while for the rain to develop. tonight will be mostly dry. we'll begin to pick up a few light showers along the shoreline first. eventually rain tonight, especially tomorrow morning. lingering showers tomorrow afternoon. and now it looks like halloween will get a little bit wet around the bay area. the timing is bad. you can see that tomorrow at 9:00 in the morning, tomorrow at 9 a.m. we have some heavy cells that are moving through the central bay area. so when it rains, it will pour tomorrow. this is 9 a.m. look what happens in just three hours. okay four hours. by 1 p.m., pretty much gone. it's out in the central valley. then we're just left with a few lingering showers around but it will be blustery and coming down for a bit.

and lingering showers through the rest of the day on sunday. now, here's monday morning at 7 a.m. halloween day, you're thinking not too bad. it's not too bad. but at 5:00 prime -- everybody's gasping -- all the mothers are gasping on the set! right around trick or treat time, if this verifies, there's going to be some light rain around the bay area. no blowout but the timing like i say is just bad. it's right during prime time sunset hours. so we'll see if that happens. and in the meantime the winds pick up with this. the front comes through, winds really get gusty at the shoreline. and we'll be 15 to 25 miles an hour elsewhere. that's for tomorrow. winter storm warnings are posted all day tomorrow. heavy mountain snow gusty winds to 60 miles an hour. snow level down to 6,000 feet. and snowfall 6 to 12" possible and travel delays. you wouldn't know it by looking at the bay. it's nice and balmy at concord, 72 degrees. oakland 69. livermore 71. san jose 72 degrees. and here's what we're

expecting. rain and wind will spread south tonight but a few hours way from that. tomorrow morning, that's when the rain really comes through, briefly heavy and then more rain heading in on halloween. bad news. still, boo at the zoo tomorrow for the san francisco zoo, 62 degrees. the giraffes love the pumpkins and so apparently to the marm ma sets. this weekend at the oakland zoo showers and 67 degrees. snow in the mountains and rain elsewhere. overnight lows in the 40s. rain late tonight, tomorrow morning. then for tomorrow just mid-70s will do it. in the extended forecast, a few showers come through on halloween just at the worst possible time. and then we go to partly cloudy then dry out tuesday through the week slowly increasing sunshine and the temperatures. but in the meantime, we have some rain to contend with. wonder if it's raining on andrea nakano's parade. >> i don't like your halloween forecast! debartolo. vern glenn has more from tampa on debartolo's involvement with oakland. >> reporter: ahoy, maties! aboard the famous pirate ship, inside of raymond james stadium, raiders-bucs tomorrow morning. now, tampa also happens to be the home of former 49er owner eddie debartolo junior. the name made noise in mid- october when it was thought he would have a heavy hand in the new oakland stadium project. not so fast! as he told me by phone this morning, on his way out of town, it was merely in support at the request of ronnie lott, an interview you'll see first on kpix 5. >> ronnie lott asked me, our development company to do him a favor and take a look at things, um, over in the oakland area. it's a tough situation. and you know, mark davis i don't envy him because it's going to be -- you know, it's

tough. i know that ronnie really cares, he has a group together that's really helping and trying to get the stadium and trying to keep the raiders in oakland like i said, um, obviously he is a dear friend of the we were happy to take a look at things. i think they have their work cut out for them. i don't know if oakland and i don't know if california can match what he might be given in las vegas. i would hope that it plays out that they stay in oakland and that they get what they need but, um, i think might be a stretch. >> you can look for more drama town fold in the coming months. the nfl vote is in january. in tampa, vern glenn, kpix 5. to college football and the national spotlight was firmly on the pac-12 this afternoon. undefeated washington facing a one loss utah team.

a make-or-break game for the huskies and their national play- off hopes. the utes trying to knock off the pac-12's only remaining unbeaten team. 4th quarter the huskies leading 24-17 and utah's troy williams finds evan for the 24-yard touchdown to tie the game at 9 minutes to go. under 4 to go, washington's dante pettis fields the punt and breaks a couple tackles and gets to the sideline and then goes on to score, a 55-yard punt return for what turned out to be the game winning touchdown. fourth ranked huskies win 34-24 to stay undefeated. the raiders stay in florida allowed the head coach jack del rio to spend some quality time with his son luke. del rio watching his son play quarterback for the 14th ranked florida gators against georgia. 1st quarter, luke pops a 19- yard touchdown to lewis. the gators take a 7-3 lead here and they win the world's largest outdoor cocktail party,

the final was 24-10. now, luke was nine when jack took the jaguars head coaching job and the young del rio played catch often with the jags kicker josh scobee but one time playing catch didn't end so well. >> so he throws it pretty hard. and it lands like 10 yards in front of me. and i didn't throw it that hard at him. so my hands were late getting the ball and the ball met my eye before my hands met the ball. black eye, my dad was like what happened to you? oh, ran into a door. scobee was a rookie so he was like don't tell your dad, i'll get cut! now, we want to make a clarification on some sort of -- major clarification. it was a meerkat. i agree with what you said earlier? a marmaduke? >> i think i called it a meerkat. >> let's just go with that. >> it's all good. thanks so much for watching at 5:00. we'll see you back here at
