4:00 am
this will be the captioning funded by cbs it's wednesday, november 9th, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." to all republicans and democrats and independents across this nation, i say it is time for us to come together as one united people. >> after a long night, donald trump has been elected 45th president of the united states in a stunning upset. good morning from studio 47 at cbs news headquarters here in new york.
4:01 am
good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. >> well, what will go down as one of the largest upsets in u.s. political history, cbs news projects donald trump has been elected the 45th president of the united states. riding a populace wave of frustration with washington, trump stymied hillary clinton's bid to become the first woman to serve in the nation's highest office. and early this morning, trump told his supporters it's time for the country to unify. >> i've just received a call from secretary clinton. she congratulated us. it's about us. on our victory and i congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign. i pledge to every citizen of our land that i will be president for all americans and this is so important to me.
4:02 am
for those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, i'm reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country. >> well, cbs news estimates trump won at least 289 electoral votes and showing surprising strength in the usually democratic upper midwest. trump also won at least 8 of the 13 so-called battleground states, including florida, north carolina, and ohio. trump narrowly won the popular vote in a remarkably close race and republicans retained control of both the senate and the house. well, the president-elect told his supporters it was a movement that got him elected. jamie yuccas reports from the trump victory rally. >> the president-elect of the
4:03 am
united states of america, donald trump. >> reporter: the crowd roared as donald trump made his entrance into his campaign's election night headquarters. >> i pledge to every citizen of our land that i will be president for all americans. >> reporter: trump pulled off wins in key battleground states tuesday night, including florida, ohio, and north carolina. the trump campaign says hillary clinton called to concede. >> she congratulated us. it's about us. on our victory and i congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign. >> reporter: stunned hillary clinton supporters wiped away tears after the democrats' multiple paths to victory disappeared one-by-one. clinton failed to carry many of the battleground states president obama won in 2012. trump's populace message resonated with working class americans who saw him as a washington outsider.
4:04 am
>> i'm hoping for change. that's what i voted for. >> reporter: ballots are still being counted, but donald trump is looking forward to taking the oath of office. >> hillary clinton conceded to donald trump but has not spoken publicly yet. apparently before that phone call, clinton supporters were greeted by her campaign chairman john podesta who told the crowd to go home. weijia jiang reports from clinton headquarters in new york city. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the emotions inside this room were tangible all through election night and then well into the early morning hours, from excitement to nervous energy and then a feeling of defeat when clinton's campaign chairman john podesta came out here and stood on that stage where hillary clinton was hoping to make history and told the crowds to go home. he said there were races that were still too close to call and secretary clinton would not be making any comments tonight. >> everybody should head home. you should get some sleep.
4:05 am
we will have more to say tomorrow. i want you to know, i want every person in this hall to know, and i want every person across the country who supported hillary to know that your voices and your enthusiasm means so much to her and to tim and to all of us. we are so proud of you! and we are so proud of her. she's done an amazing job and she is not done yet! >> reporter: at that point, supporters started leaving right away, but even before that, people were crying. they were embracing each other and they were holding hands. you could see the disappointment on their faces and mixed in with that was shock because people
4:06 am
were not expecting this tonight. not even the clinton campaign. at the beginning of the night, it seemed they were confident. aides told us she was working with a speech with her husband bill at a nearby hotel and going to come here to the javitz center to watch the rest of the results. that never happened and we never saw a glimpse from her and we will have to wait until later today to see what she has to stay. reporting at clinton headquarters in mid-town manhattan, back to you, anne-marie. cbs news political director john dickerson weighed in after trump's speech on how his win of the popular vote might impact his tone now that he is heading to the white house. >> reporter: we have seen donald trump give a conciliatory sort of the right pitch in his speech, but those 56 million who voted for hillary clinton, there are a lot of them who believe he came to this position by playing on racial fears, by he was for five years the chief advocate of the idea that president obama was illegitimate because he wasn't born in the united states. there are people on the other
4:07 am
side of this who are not going to accept this and we will see what the shape of that response will be, who becomes the voice of that response. you mentioned barack obama. he will not be the voice of that response. but who is and who does? and we have yet to see that part of the story play out. >> that was john dickerson. well, there was a large crowd outside the white house tonight. some were trump supporters, some were not. president obama campaigned hard for hillary clinton. donald trump promised to undo much of what the president accomplished. here is margaret brennan's take during our cbs news election special. >> reporter: a crowd has gathered here, scott, but the silence from the white house is deafening. president obama argued that the very fate of the republican, his words, hinged on this election and he was on the stump for his successor more than any other president in modern history. donald trump, a man he called uniquely unfit for office, is going to deal obama's historic
4:08 am
presidency a serious blow. clinton had promised that she would protect his signature achievement, obamacare, which has been damaged in recent months. she had pledged to undertake immigration reform, roll out environmental protections and defend that landmark nuclear deal with iran, which trump says he is going to tear up. supreme court nominee merrick garland doesn't look like he is going to get confirmed and lead us can a split supreme court. trump said he is going to renegotiate obama's free trade deal with asia and other alliances, so this is going to make it very difficult on monday, when president obama heads to europe to try to reassure allies that america is going to stand by their defense, particularly considering that trump has made friendly overtures to russia. how is he going to explain this pledge to possibly starting trad deal with china? so this is going to be really difficult for the white house to explain away in the light of
4:09 am
day, but, scott and norah, president obama said before the polls close that when the sun rises, america will still be the greatest nation on earth. i think it's safe to say he didn't think he would wake up to this kind of result. >> that was margaret brennan at the white house. now it could be a wild ride on wall street today with news of trump's victory. dow futures plunged overnight. and overseas, there were heavy losses. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange. jill, good morning. >> good morning. donald trump's surprise win on uncertainty surrounding a trump presidency is shocking financial markets. they mostly priced in a hillary clinton victory. so far tonight, there has been a global market sell-off. asian and european markets are tumbling. at one point, dow futures here in the u.s. were pointing to more than 800-point drop at the open.
4:10 am
i should note they recovered a great deal after hillary clinton conceded. markets don't like uncertainty and there are just a lot of question marks surrounding donald trump's economic positions. he said he wants to revamp the tax code and u.s. immigration policy. he has been critical of the u.s. federal reserve. there is also concern the u.s. could withdraw from major trade agreements. the mexican peso dropped sharply on fears a trump presidency would mean less trade with mexico. investors will digest all of this and what it means. markets in the u.s. still pointing to a major drop at the open but they have recovered a great deal. anne-marie? >> jill wagner at the new york stock exchange, thanks a lot, jill coming up on the "morning news." foreign fallout. we will take you overseas for reaction to the u.s. election results. this is the "cbs morning news." 4:14 am
in london say this is a finale they just couldn't miss. >> it's big league. big league. >> reporter: but for many clinton supporters at this party in london, early excitement lessened as the night wore on. markets around the globe plummeted as trump won state after state. in russia, president trump souvenirs are already being sold. russian president vladimir putin has reached out already to congratulate trump and so has nigel farrage, the architect of britain's brexit movement. the justice minister said the world will not end with trump being elected, but it will get crazier. >> riley carson in london, thank you. still ahead, the congressional races. the republican party scores a big win as it maintains control of the house and senate. ntaining control of the house and the senate. was near. the fiery tissue left her nose sore and red. so dad slayed the problem with puffs plus lotion, instead.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. as donald trump's victory gradual unfolded in the wee hours of this morning, cbs news contributor bob schieffer and the rest of our political team realized they were witnessing history. >> you know, i remember when richard nixon resigned and cbs news director roger mudd was
4:22 am
part of the panel after that happened. i said, roger, what is your reaction? and he said,, you know, i think i want to go home and sleep a couple of hours and i'll come back and tell you tomorrow. this was totally unexpected. i think certainly from those of us who have been covering politics over the years, this is -- i think charlie is right. this is -- this is historic, but i don't think we can say right now where this goes from here. >> unexpected, not because of any interest in politics, but unexpected because of the polling. the polls were telling us. polls done by many different organizations at many different times were all pointing in the direction of a clinton victory. >> the polls and the behavior of a candidate that people said was not fit to be president of the united states. so many people have found his behavior egregious but at the end of the day, it really didn't matter. i take some hope in his speech tonight, though, that he said he wants to reach out. that he wants to build bridges
