home on dunbar drive shortly after midnight this morning. they found three gunshot victims and the house was on fire. kpix 5's anne makovec tells us the fbi is involved in the investigation. >> reporter: we just heard a little bit from a neighbor about the family that lived in the affected house. a married couple, two women, and they had several children by all accounts upstanding family and right now the investigation into, um, the murder scene is under way. police were called to dunbar drive after someone heard gunshots just after midnight. they found a person who had been shot lying in the street and performed cpr but it was too late. in the meantime, this house nearby was slowly burning once the fire department put out the fire two people found dead inside. >> we are now investigating the homicide of three people.

>> reporter: police have detained one person for questioning. >> we are in the early stages of this investigation. >> reporter: they say there's no danger to the public, but neighbors aren't feeling safe. >> for it to be three people and therefore for it to be literally right around the corner from your house is kind of, like, i don't know, that's not too cool. >> reporter: and back out here live now you can see the fbi at work in the crime scene which actually spans several blocks here in oakland. these streets have been blocked off for about 12 hours and police say they will be out here for at least another couple of hours. live in oakland, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> thank you. san jose police say that they have arrested a man in connection with a crash that killed a pedestrian. the suspect is identified as 4 is-year-old ricardo gomez. he was booked into santa clara county jail on suspicion of felony dui and vehicular manslaughter. the crash happened downtown yesterday afternoon at fourth and santa clara streets. investigators say that the pedestrian was struck by the suspect's pickup and pinned against a tv news van that was

parked on the street. the victim is identified as a city worker but the identity hasn't been released. two other people were injured, not life-threatening. it's a mess in oakland and businesses open the violent protests will stop. here's the damage to businesses on broadway in the city's downtown. last night was again full of protests by people upset that donald trump was elected as the next u.s. president. it was not as large or as bad as the night before but 11 people were arrested amid dumpster fires and broken windows. most of the arrests were for vandalism and assaulting police officers. as usual, the protest started peacefully until there was trouble. at one point last night protestors ended up on interstate 580 near telegraph avenue. they formed a human chain to block traffic until police officers ordered them to leave. it's not clear whether protestors plan to return to

oakland tonight. oakland was just one of many cities across the country that saw large crowds marching through the streets. some scuffling with police. more nationwide protests are planned for tonight. cbs news' weijia jang tells us that the unrest comes as donald trump prepares to become the nation's 45th president. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump tweeted that he has a busy day planned today working on his administration plans inside trump tower. across the country police were busy as anti-trump demonstrators staged another round of violent protests. police in portland, oregon fired rubber bullets and arrested at least two dozen rioters. they declared the protest there a riot. after blaming the protests on professional protestors, trump's transition team will be relocating from trump tower to washington where he will take

the oath of office on january 20. yesterday trump made his first visit to the white house before meeting with congressional republicans. analysts expect house speaker paul ryan and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell to move quickly on long stalled republican policies. >> when donald trump says we're going to do tax reform, what does that mean? that paul ryan has been working on the house ways and means committee producing ideas that went nowhere. now he is thinking, wait a minute, trump could sign this into law. >> reporter: meanwhile, hillary clinton was spotted by a supporter hiking near her chappaqua, new york, home. the woman told a smiling clinton that take her young daughter to vote for her was a proud moment as a mother. weijia jang, cbs news, the white house. >> within the past hour, we have also learned that vice president-elect mike pence will be taking charge of trump's transition team replacing new jersey governor chris christie. christie will still have a smaller role on the team. and there are reports that silicon valley venture capitalist peter thiel could be joining trump's transition

team. donald trump is also sitting down with "60 minutes" this weekend for his first extensive post-election interview. see it this sunday at 7 p.m. here on kpix 5. last veterans day the san jose mayor and a county supervisor pledged to help homeless veterans. but was it an empty promise? kpix 5's maria medina is live in san jose where a veterans day parade is under way with the answer. >> reporter: michelle, yeah, that parade started a few minutes ago down the street and you can see this huge crowd that's gathered here to honor our veterans. it was last veterans day that mayor sam liccardo promised to end homelessness for veterans and some would say he is fulfilling that promise. >> the keys to my apartment. >> reporter: after three months of homelessness in san jose, army veteran nicholas is beginning a new chapter in his life. >> like i won the lottery. this is just the beginning

because now the real journey begins. >> reporter: unfortunately, nicholas has lived that journey several times, the first time more than two decades ago. >> i have been on the streets three different times, three different struggles. at the time, there was no help. you know, they just send you out give you a paycheck and bye. >> reporter: last year on veterans day county supervisor dave cortese and san jose mayor sam liccardo made this promise. >> that by the 100th aanniversary of veterans day in 2018, we'll end veterans homelessness in this valley. >> are they on track? >> the bad news is we still have homeless veterans. the good news, we are ahead of schedule. >> reporter: one year later on this veterans day they say they made progress housing more than 500 of the 700 homeless veterans in santa clara county. cortese is renting a room to a veteran. >> great guy, um, he has a couple of jobs. he works hard and he is a good tenant. >> we're not going to stop until we get every veteran

scene.. after reports of unsafe conditions at pier 96 in san francisco.. new at noon two people hospitalized 26 sick and hazmat called to the scene after the reports of unsafe conditions at pier 96 in san francisco. it happened around 8 a.m. at recology sf, a recycle afacility. firefighters say that trash and other materials caused some people to get sick. the two hospitalized are expected to be okay. there's no threat to the public according to fire officials. stocks are down a day after

the dow closed at an all-time high. you can see the dow is down just 4 points. before the ringing of the opening bell this morning, the new york stock exchange held a moment of silence in remembrance of veterans day. a 108-year-old world war ii veteran attended the private veterans day breakfast at the white house. >> cbs reporter craig boswell caught up with the retired army sergeant as he made new memories in washington, dc today. >> reporter: everywhere bill mohr goes crowds always gather. >> a beautiful day. >> reporter: and the 108-year- old world war ii veteran always has a message. >> america is the only country where you have all your freedom. >> reporter: the army sergeant fought for that freedom from 1943 to 1945 serving in north africa, italy, germany and france. he still wears the legion of honor medal given to him by the french. >> mr. bill goes to washington.

>> reporter: his daughter joanne brought him to unbefore the most meaningful place for him here the world war ii memorial. she says it makes him feel young. >> i love when he says, they say, bill, how do you feel today? he goes, you know, i feel a lot better when it's 103. >> reporter: here's bill at 104 with his wife josie. he lost the love of his life just two years later. his stop at the memorial is in advance of his first trip to the white house. >> if they don't move it. of russians opportunities to grow their businesses. linkedin recently agreed to be purchased by microsoft in a deal expected to be closed by the end of the year. dozens of cities across the country are installing colorful benches in their parks and you can do more than just sit on them. the environmentally friendly benches feature free phone charging stations and free wi- fi hot spots. no electricity is involved. they are called sufa benches named after the boston company that makes them. it uses a square solar panel in the middle of the bench to power two phone chargers. >> we have been actually bringing su fa benches into low neighborhoods and schools of we are starting to ship them overseas. >> the 7-foot benches bolted to the ground are already in five countries and 65 cities. in california, they are only in los angeles for now. no word on when they will come to san francisco. coming up a bizarre fight involving two bald eagles

normal. the normal color is shell pink in color and i wanted to show this model. i don't know if you can see it. there we go. so the ear canal actually in a dog her size would go down vertically about an inch and then in horizontally about an inch. in a cat it might be a quarter inch and quarter in. so sometimes owners think they can see into the ear to see what's going on but in fact that's not true, so any there is discharges or discoloration the vet needs to examine the ear, make sure there's no foreign material in the eardrum and it could be bacterial infection, yeast infection. >> what are some of the treatments? >> so usually in my experience most of my patients will respond very nicely to a medication that treats all three of the things i just mentioned. but sometimes they don't in which case we have do a culture and find out what the organism is. >> thank you, dr. jill. if you have a question about
