good afternoon, it is tuesday, november 15. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. those protests aren't just happening here in the bay area but also nationwide. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from san francisco city hall where demonstrators are wrapping up. anne. >> reporter: the protest just wrapped up here at civic center plaza in front of city hall. but the protests went on for five hours starting at 6:30 this morning with a sunrise ceremony in solidarity. check out these pictures from chopper 5. eventually the crowd grew to between 500 and 1,000 people ending up in the middle of market street in front of the corps of engineers. this was the scene at 9:30 a.m. police facilitating the march. they stayed for hours giving their feels about the feelings against the dakota access pipeline. some sat in the middle of the street. others linked arms outside the army corps office. this was one of 200 protests

around the country today called for by elders of the standing rock sioux tribe of north dakota where there are plans for a crude oil pipeline that would run 1200 miles to a shipping point in illinois. there have been protests and hundreds of arrests about this issue since it made headlines this summer. >> i do not believe what we're doing is right. i do not believe -- i can't believe obama hasn't finished this already. i can't believe we're still here. >> seeing the repression, the brutal repression against nonviolent protestors treated as though they are inherently a violent threat is just wrong. >> reporter: but the protests here were very peaceful. nobody was arrested. some of the people in the middle of the street said they were willing to risk arrest and a leader said that wouldn't be necessary since police officers had been so nice. they had to reroute some of the muni trains and buses around that street closure but now everything is back to normal. live at city hall, anne

makevoc, kpix 5. president-elect donald trump is meeting with his running mate and top advisers today to discuss high level cabinet positions and administration. this after trump was criticized by democrats for choosing former breitbart news steve bannon as his chief strategist and senior counselor. cbs's craig boswell shows us the top contenders for other high-profile jobs. >> i don't know exactly but i'll be meeting. >> reporter: alabama senator jeff sessions arrived at trump tower this morning with president-elect donald trump and vice president-elect mike pence meeting today to discuss cabinet positions. among the candidates for secretary of state, former new york city mayor rudy giuliani and former u.s. ambassador to the united nations john bolton, another was recommended as treasury secretary. trump transition officials are also asking about having some

of trump's family members get high level security clearance. his top three children are expected to continue to run trump's businesses. house speaker paul ryan who criticized hillary clinton's ties to the clinton foundation as "pay for play" during the campaign is fine with it. >> he is a man who has made great success, created tens of thousands of jobs, because he gets good advice from good people around him in his life. what's wrong with that? that's a good thing. >> reporter: trump needs to be cautious. >> the relationship with the family and the business would be very open and above board or the walls between the two would be very high if the president trump wants to keep faith with the promises he made and all the criticism he leveled during the campaign. >> reporter: trump has nine weeks to fill thousands of administration positions before taking the oath of office. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. >> as president-elect trump works to fill the positions, the l.a. police chief isn't changing its

stance on immigration. a special order prevents l.a. cops from initiating contact with someone solely to determine their legal status. the chief charlie beck leadership the department moved away from honoring requests to detain deportation-eligible inmates. europe which already is struggling with "brexit," unemployment and a refugee crisis. >> time will tell whether "brexit" or with respect to the u.s. election ends up actually satisfying those people who have been fearful or angry or concerned. >> later this week, president obama will fly to germany to meet with leaders in berlin, then to peru for a summit. now that the 2016 election is over, the focus is shifting to 2018. already, california's lieutenant governor has the early edge to replace his current boss. 23% of likely voters are backing gavin newsom for governor according to a new field igs poll. the former san francisco mayor and current lieutenant governor announced his candidacy in february. also running, the l.a. mayor and the state treasurer. the board of supervisors in san francisco could vote about short-term rentals. the proposal calls for 60 nights a year for short-term

rentals regardless of whether the host is on site. the current limit is 90 nights for unhosted rentals and there are no limits for hosted rentals. >> the airbnb and other platforms have taken somewhere between 10 to 12,000 units of housing out of the housing market and converted them to full-time tourist accommodations at a time when the city is going through a pretty severe housing crisis. that's a problem. >> airbnb said: we remain hopeful the city will return to the table and work with all sides on real solutions that simplify the registration process, protect housing and enable middle class san franciscans to share their homes. today san jose city council members will consider at least three proposals about how to gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. one plan calls for the minimum to reach $15 by january 2019. the other plans call for that goal to be reached by july 2019

or january 2020. some other cities in the valley including sunnyvale and mountain view already plan to raise minimum wages to $15 by 2018. happening today the commercial crab season starts along the northern california coast. kpix 5's jesse ward joins us live from san francisco on why the industry should see some more profit this is season compared with a year ago. >> reporter: kenny, the vendors along fisherman's wharf are so ready to sell crab from these very waters. they say selling crab from other parts of the country just isn't the same. long before the sun came up, these guys had already taken a trip out to sea to drop off some pots and come back for a nap. >> on time and hopes are up. everybody is hoping for the best. >> reporter: last season was dismal. toxic acid levels in crabs were too high for much of the season, making it impossible for local fishermen to financially recover. the people we spoke to on the piers this morning think the crab will price out between 425 and 450 per pound this season

meaning these will sell in the $8 range. >> just right out of the pot, clean it, that's it. doesn't need anything else. >> reporter: tyler has been working here along fisherman's wharf for 30 years. he is ready to sell bay area crab again. >> we are eating crab from washington and oregon that's expensive and then with the worry of the toxic acid, people weren't buying. >> reporter: now at crab is safe to eat. about 60 miles to the sonoma mendocino coastline is closed to crabbing. they are testing crab for acid north of point reyes. some have come back clean but the state is waiting until december 1 to give the "all clear." so today is the first day of commercial crabbing season and it will go through june. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. still ahead, working to fight fast-moving flames. >> we have california wildfires in north carolina. >> what firefighters say is

advisories. nearly 40% of the southeast is facing drought including three- quarters of alabama and half the state of georgia. there are 5,000 firefighters on the ground from as far away as colorado, arizona and california. evacuation efforts are under way in a part of new zealand which is cut off from the country because of damage from a major earthquake. hundreds of tourists and residents have been stranded in the coastal town. sky cure ra. new see lands's defense force is ferrying people out of kaikura by helicopter and a military ship is evacuating people. wellington is now facing a second problem. widespread flooding. many locals are taking it though in stride. >> a double whammy. waiting for the plague now. >> a committee was created to take public input. it has been hearing recommendations and is now expected to meet a final time this thursday to come up with a proposed solution. cutting tech shuttle stops in san francisco could lead to more cars on the roads. that's according to a new report being reviewed today by the sfmta board. under current programs, shuttle buses pick up more than 8,000 workers in san francisco and take them to tech companies in silicon valley. the report by the municipal transit agency found that plans for shuttle hubs would cause a steep drop in ridership up to 45% leading more tech workers to drive instead. affordable housing project on treasure island is hitting a snag. a lack of funding. right now construction is under way to build 8,000 homes which will be offered at below market rate. construction costs are adding to the project price tag. it rose from $600 million to 970 million. the san francisco board of supervisors is now expected to
