where thunderstorms are popping. all unwinding from a deep low off the pacific northwest and it's not over yet. more rain on the way tomorrow morning and our own risk of thunderstorms. cate caugiran reports live from sausalito. >> reporter: we are getting a little bit of a break from the rain here at vista point in sausalito. we can see that the clouds have started to clear up over san francisco, though, the wind is still picked up a bit in the area. but good news right now, it is dry. the rain picks up a little bit after our 5:00 newscast but for the visitors here taking pictures of the iconic golden gate bridge, they are getting it with a nice clear shot. it may be dry now but utility workers did spend a good part of the morning trying to repair some of the storm damage. in bolinas, two trees and branches came down. the marin department of public works spent hours cutting down this large cypress tree branch.

it was hanging overpower lines on ocean avenue. public works had to shut down the roads for a few hours and with that rain came strong winds. the national weather service says it was the strongest today with gusts up to 22 miles per hour in san francisco, 41 miles per hour in half moon bay. most of the rain did come down on the north bay. the weather service said santa rosa can expect up to 1.27 inches of rain throughout the weekend. so don't put away those umbrellas just yet. forecasters are predicting two more storms are on the way next week. reporting live in sausalito, cate caugiran, kpix 5. this afternoon at memorial stadium in berkeley rain dumped on fans for the big game. stanford and cal gear covered up by a sea of ponchos. it turned out to be fair weather fans. >> if cal is doing well, i'm staying. if they are getting trounced

i'll leave. >> fans weren't the only ones braving the rain. a group of uc union workers were out picketing for higher wages holding signs that read, uc pay workers enough to eat. >> 70% of our workers are not paid enough to eat. meaning 70% are food insecure which means they have to skip meals, you know, they don't have access to nutritious food and that 70% and we're talking about career employees at uc. >> they represent about 14,000 workers across the uc system. they say they are in contract negotiations with the school but haven't received any counterproposals to their wage increase request yet. time is running out. they say their contracts are set to expire at the end of the month. meanwhile, berkeley police are dealing with a flood of crime. the apple store on 4th street has been robbed for a third time in less than two weeks. officers say a group of people in their late teens or early 20s came in wednesday morning and stole about $100,000 worth of merchandise.

the berkeley police department is now working with other agencies in the area to see if the thefts are part of a larger pattern. >> they are not there for very long. it's a property crime-focused theft. we know what they're there for. we are working with apple as well as the business district on 4th street to see what we can do to stem that type of crime. >> nobody was hurt in the robberies. the city now has additional officers out patrolling 4th street as well as the holiday- related events going on around the city. fewer people are taking bart. ridership has dropped for the first time in six years. from july to september, overall ridership was down 1.3% compared to last year. the drop was even larger on weekends. ridership is down by more than 6% on sundays. so why are fewer people riding? bart's assistant gm says the system has essentially reached its capacity. also coming down, the so- called wall of empathy at the 16th street mission bart

station. since the election, people have been sharing how they feel on post-its but last night organizers began removing the notes themselves to protect them from the incoming rain. >> we don't want all of the love and all the important thoughts to be destroyed. so we are holding on to them. we are going to be using them for a future art installation. >> organizers say the wall of empathy is meant as a counterpoint to president-elect trump's proposed wall along the mexican border. meanwhile, a gold star family that is a family who lost someone in combat could have used some empathy from their fellow airline passengers this week. a memorial service was held in lodi on thursday for sergeant john perry. he died in a suicide bombing in afghanistan. earlier in the week, perry's parents and sister traveled to the east coast to receive his remains. but because of a delay the flight crew was worried they could miss their connecting flight in phoenix. so when they landed, the captain asked everybody to stay seated and let a special

military family exit first. and that prompted boos and complaints from people in first class. >> to hear the reaction of the flight being delayed because of a gold star family and the first class cabin booing that was really upsetting. and it made us cry some more. >> i can imagine. as it turned out the perries did make their connection with the pilot staying at the gate to make sure it happened and they eventually reached dover air force base. >> mm. >> sergeant perry will be buried at arlington national cemetery. back here in the bay area, big push to help those in need. the weekend before thanksgiving, today hundreds stood out in the rain in san mateo to get bags of free food. kpix 5's maria medina found out as cost of living gets higher, so does the need. >> i wouldn't know what to do would you you guys. >> reporter: my price may not have much but what little he does have he is thankful for. >> thank you ever so much. it's not always easy to have a

smile on my face. but i said to myself, well, if samaritan house was to go out of business for a week or for a month, it wouldn't be no smile on my face. >> reporter: today he stood in the rain for an hour to get free groceries from samaritan house in san mateo county. hundreds of people were in line. the need is apparent. >> just because people are struggling doesn't mean they don't deserve a good holiday. >> reporter: today volunteerers are giving out 50,000 pounds of food enough to feed 400 families. >> more people are in poverty because of the rent. people can't afford to live here. >> reporter: for tommy, legally blind, he says finding a janitorial job is tough. >> do you want corn? >> yes, definitely need the corn. >> reporter: he gets food from samaritan house twice a month. >> i'm trying not to get emotional about this because you can't -- you can't find too many people that will just go out and give food like this on

a rainy day. >> reporter: the tears fell anyway, thankful for a cartful of food. not much to many, but to tommy, this -- >> oh, thank you so much, god bless, thanks, man. >> reporter: -- is everything. in san mateo, maria medina, kpix 5. >> the samaritan house says donations are up but they are in need of frozen turkeys. second city harvest in santa clara counties, the food bank is trying to collect 19,000 frozen turkeys by thursday to help supply local assistance agencies with traditional thanksgiving meals. but they are still about 5,000 short. >> we live in one of the most affluent areas in the united states and we're concerned there's a perception that there's not a need here when actually, demand for this service has never been higher. so this is a great time to help the community. >> second harvest is also welcoming donations of healthy non-perishable items. if you don't live in santa clara county, there are other ways you can get help. every year kpix 5 teams up with

toxic hazard suddenly popping up in popular parks and hiking areas. >> reporter: robert never guessed that his hike with his dog koa last month would be the last. >> as far as i knew everything was normal that day. and it wasn't until afterwards that i realized it wasn't normal. >> reporter: a day after the hike in briones park, robert discovered the dog wasn't eating and had blood in his stool. he rushed him to the vet. >> they told me that, um, his liver was already destroyed and, um, they could try an save him but it didn't look so good. >> reporter: koa died. a mushroom stem was found in his feces and tests later revealed he had eaten a death cap mushroom known to cause liver failure in dogs. the problem is serious enough that park officials are posting warnings like these about death cap and death angel mushrooms. >> over there, would you? >> reporter: an emergency veterinarian said he typically

sees up to 12 toxic mushroom cases a year. and this is the time of year when there's a spike. >> whenever it starts getting moist, um, those mushrooms start popping up. >> reporter: death caps mostly sprout near oakland trees. they crop up on hilltops and other areas of briones where fog lingers near oak trees. dr. lucas says dog owners have to be diligent about watching for mushrooms. >> i do a policing of my yard every day. >> reporter: if your dog does eat a toxic mushroom -- >> make them vomit in a veterinary facility. >> if you suspect your pet ate a toxic mushroom collect a sample of it to take with you to the vet so it can be expected and tested. well, also having to do with the rain a landmark in san rafael will soon get a new roof but not cheap. the marin county civic have

designed by frank lloyd write still has the original roof from the 1960s and leaks and problems are showing up. the ceiling collapsed last year and now county supervisors are moving forward with a three phase replacement starting next summer. the expected price tag $21 million. another place the weather always seems to cause problems, sfo. arriving flights are being delayed by about an hour and 20 minutes as the airport meters incoming traffic. no significant departure delays to report. if you are flying out for the holiday weekend, give yourself plenty of time. all three bay area airports are expected to be busier this year than last year. it's because of shrink unemployment numbers, also rising incomes. sfo is expecting a nearly 6% spike in holiday travel. san jose mineta 15%. and oakland international airport is expecting 10% more passengers through the gates. and passengers traveling through oakland will get

shasta county. it will have 200,000 lights. the doobie brothers will perform at the lighting ceremony on the 29th after the holiday. the giving tree will be recycled into mulch and lumber to build habitat for humanity homes. and it's beginning to look a lot like christmas in the sierra. ski season officially under way. mount rose and boreal both opened for business. th weekend. and with good reason. we have that front off the pacific northwest. gave up some rain and totals are fairly impressive in the north bay and not at all impressive in the south bay as you're about to find out. but here's the kpix 5 hi-def doppler up and running and showing widely scattered showers once again entering the marin county coastline and down along the peninsula. and also, over in the east bay so widely scattered showers tonight. the front itself is now over the romantically named newman in the central valley and stretching up through the sierra where they are getting a few thunderstorms tonight. and here's what's happening. fairly vigorous low that's abeam seattle right now will

continue to spin wheels of moisture into the bay area through tomorrow midday-ish before tapering off. we do get a chance of thunderstorms. we'll show that you in a moment. but not directly on the kpix 5 futurecast. the numbers .01" at livermore which last hour was reporting light rain. third inch in san francisco. half inch in san rafael. almost two inches in santa rosa. so the farther north the more punch you got out of this. high surf advisory is posted at the same time along the shore, large breakers right through tomorrow afternoon. swell to 15 feet and strong rip currents a possibility. so surf is up at the shoreline. there's the bay bridge. isn't that pretty? numbers now in the upper 50s for the most part. oakland with 60 degrees. in san jose 58 and in santa rosa right now it's 56 degrees. we were talking about futurecast. so one goes, here's another on the way. overnight rain on the roof as

the loving spoonful once sang for the north bay and then for the south and central bay, we have more rain coming in this is tomorrow morning 8 a.m. so first in the north bay, then in the south bay, after that look at all the pop-up showers. some of them fairly vigorous and there could be a thunderstorm or two or you could hear thunder in the wake of the front moving through and then monday clearing out. in terms of rain amounts, up to a half inch in the east bay same for the south bay when all is said and done one to two inches in the north bay, not so much for the santa cruz mountains. there's not much left by the time it gets down there. so more showers overnight tonight. later on sunday the showers taper off and it looks like we're clearing it up for monday but there could be more later in the week. same time winter weather advisories are post the out in the sierra. we already showed you the big traffic backups on 80 and then south down to south lake tahoe. heavy nightmare -- heavy nightmare -- well, heavy nighttime snow tonight. gusty winds to 45 miles per hour. [chuckling] snow level down to lake level about 6200 feet. and all of this means there

street after thieves hit the apple store for the third time in less than two weeks. this team, they got away with more than $100,000 worth of property. officers are now working with other departments to see if the thefts are part of a more widespread pattern. no rest for the president- elect this weekend. donald trump is picking up the pace with his cabinet and white house staffing choices. trump and his transition team held a flurry of meetings with potential appointees. >> among the visitors, one prominent republican who once called the president-elect a con man. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump met with his outspoken critic and former gop nominee mitt romney at his golf club in new jersey. >> was it productive? >> went great. >> reporter: after the meeting romney who once called trump a con man and phony did not discuss any potential role in the new administration. but he said the two had a far- reaching conversation about america's global interests. >> very thorough and in depth

discussion in the time we had. and, um, appreciate the chance to speak with the president- elect. >> reporter: mr. trump also held sitdowns with retired marine general james mattis a candidate for secretary of defense, education advocate michelle rhee and sacramento mayor kevin johnson. mr. trump will hold more meetings here in new jersey tomorrow with former new york mayor rudy giuliani and new jersey governor chris christie, who was demoted from chairman of the transition team. on friday, the president-elect tapped alabama senator jeff sessions to be his attorney general. and congressman mike pompeo will head the cia. he also reached a $25 million settlement in the trio of fraud lawsuits against trump university. today he tweeted, the only bad thing about winning the presidency is that i did not have the time to go through a long but winning trial on "trump u." too bad! as the president-elect builds his team, hundreds gathered in washington to protest the new government.

damaged it last month. he was arraigned yesterday on a felony count of vandalism. after he said if he had to do it again, he would not. >> during this time and while reflecting, i realize nonviolence is the way to protest mr. trump. by destroying that star, it was wrong. and i apologize for that. >> the district attorney says otis caused more than $400 worth of damage. meanwhile a mall santa in florida is in hot water tonight for a remark he made about hillary clinton. he told a 10-year-old girl the only name on the naughty list this year is hillary clinton. well, a mall spokesman said the comment was meant as a joke. but mom wasn't amused. she posted the exchange on facebook and the santa in question was fired. he was then sent straight to human resources for counseling. the mall hasn't decided yet whether he will return this season. and still to come, how one

area student. dan simon on the police off who went the extra mile to a chance encounter on a dark road was a break for one determined bay area student. the police officer who went the extra mile to help out. >> reporter: working the graveyard shift is lonely for a cop. but on a chilly september night kurt had company. >> he had a hoodie on. he was dressed in black. i had seen some lights like flash at my back. >> reporter: 18-year-old jordan duncan had just finished his own graveyard shift packing boxes at a nearby business. >> did you think this person was up to no good? >> since he was slow close to the freeway i thought he was broke down.

>> reporter: jordan explained he was just walking home but it was a distance of that walk that left the officer speechless. >> and he tells me the path he takes to our city and it's literally uphill both ways. so you said, you know, if you don't mind, hold on a second, went to my front seat cleared it out and asked him if i could give him a ride home. he was like you can do that? >> you can do that. >> it took you two hours to get to work each way? >> yes. my car broke down. i had no way to work. >> reporter: he didn't want to ask for a ride by burdening others so he walked 7 miles each way six days a week. >> most people use that distance to not having a car as an excuse not to find a job but this kid wasn't an obstacle. >> reporter: on the raid hoe jordan shared his dream to go to college and to become a police officer. corporal kepter was so struck by the chance encounter he knew he had to do something to make jordan's life easier. getting the car fixed was going

to be too expensive but the corporal had an idea. if four wheels wasn't an option how about 2? so for $500 the police department bought him a brand-new bike. >> he was speechless. he kind of said all this for walking. like but it's so much more than that. you know? putting obstacles in front of you, you're getting your job. that's impressive. >> words couldn't explain how flabbergasted i was. i just treasure the bike. it's never been dirty before. >> bike was just the beginning. benicia police now have launched a fund to help pay for jordan's college education and maybe a new car, as well. ♪[ music ] still to come, he was there to catch a trout. instead, he caught a pair of mountain lions! on camera! oh, yup. the california kid whose fishing trip is going viral on facebook tonight. >> a weather system certainly had some teeth in it and there's more on the way.

with san francisco getting hit pretty good by tomorrow morning. it will dissipate as things head east. we'll begin to dry out with high pressure beginning to build in but we are going to have to wait until monday morning for it. in the meantime, sunday morning looks a little bit wet. and a little bit wet will serve as well for the 49ers as they take on the new england patriots tomorrow. game time temperature about 61 degrees. so clouds and showers a possibility. and that's going to be broadcast on channel 5! what a coincidence. overnight lows tonight temperatures in the upper 40s low 50s for overnight lows and the sun-up tomorrow morning at 4 minutes before 7:00. high temperatures tomorrow will not be the big story but still, low to mid-60s a little chill by california standards. in the extended forecast we are going to have showers lingering through tomorrow morning and a fairly good cold front coming -- well defined showers coming

neighbors to notice. homes in this part of rural cloverdale are remote with spectacular views and often a lot of land. so when larry heard his nearest neighbor sold his 82-acre vineyard last summer -- >> open areas that have been regraded. >> reporter: he looked forward to meeting the new neighbors just across the ridge. >> at the out sit set we thought we were going to meet a nice neighbor and invite him into the community. >> reporter: according to county records, the neighbors got a permit to build a greenhouse. but he said over the summer something didn't seem right at all. >> the property here had armed guards, drones flying the perimeter of the premises to watch for intruders. they wouldn't let anybody in. they wouldn't let pg&e in. >> reporter: there was only one single lane gravel road in and out to serve all of the neighbors. he says for weeks, the road was busy with construction equipment. >> the truck and the blacked

out suvs and the pickup trucks hauling trailers that are totally unmarked going out. [ helicopter noise ] >> reporter: neighbors first alerted county investigators after they did their own aerial survey. they took these photos and delivered them to the county. when inspectors went to the property, they discovered a multi-million dollar marijuana grow. greenhouses full of plants, outdoor grows irrigated with well water. the owners had no land or water permits. and inspectors also found this. >> they turned an old shack really into a 14-person bunk house without either proper sanitation or electrical hookups. >> reporter: all the violations led to a court ordered halt. the property's electricity shut off. this property is just one of thousands of pot grows on private property operating without state and county required permits for water and land use. >> it's a large-scale activity.

>> reporter: according to the regional water quality control board. >> we have heard between 30 and 70,000 cultivated sites. we have, you know, roughly 800 enrollees currently. >> reporter: the water board expects now that marijuana is legal, more growers will abide by the law and apply for water permits. >> especially illegal diversions from creeks are a significant issue for water quality and causes issues to other people in the watershed using that water. >> reporter: but uc berkeley land scientist thinks many growers don't want the prop 64 regulation or the added expense. >> the growers i know who have successfully done it have spent a lot of money one said $100,000. >> reporter: with some 10,000 grows in humboldt county alone, the question remains, where is the water to irrigate the crops coming from? >> and if there's multiple users diverting from small streams, they could definitely dry up a creek. >> reporter: with just 2

enforcement officers on staff to regulate permits, they hope they will move the grow operations out of shadows into good environmental farming. >> it's going to, you know, essentially push people into compliance and we are not going to have this issue with people hiding and not wanting to be part of the system. >> but if this sort of thing -- >> reporter: he is hopeful but says time will tell. >> it really comes down to the environment. the water board expects now that marijuana is legal, more growers will abide. and we plan to follow up in six months to see. recreational marijuana regulations go into effect next year. >> if you have 30,000 grow operations and they are not -- they weren't previously legally compliant? >> a lot of them were not for prop 64 because they wanted to stay in the shadows and keep things private. >> now they are going to have to follow regulations. >> what's interesting about these neighbors is this operation, this million-dollar operation, it was in plain sight. so you just see how shorthanded
