cuba on the world stage... tonight: there's growing celebration over cuba on the world stage... tonight: there's growing celebration over the death of former cuban dictator, fidel castro. and i he was a revolutionary leader who put cuba on the world stage and tonight there is growing celebration over the death of former cuban leader fidel castro. good evening, i'm brian hackney. >> i'm betty yu. peaceful demonstrators waved flags and people cheered with joy. others weeping for family members who didn't live to see this day. as don champion reports, thousands are pouring into miami as they learn about his passing reporter: people celebrating filled the streets in miami's little havana saturday as word of fidel castro's death spread. the neighborhood is a cultural epicenter for cuban-americans. >> this is a very meaningful day that the dictator is dead.

>> reporter: her father was a political prisoner in cuba for years. her family fled to america when she was 11. >> i saw suffering. i was a small child. and i'm here. very thankful to be here. this is my country and i'm very hopeful for cuba. >> reporter: throughout the day, the crowd behind me has grown many here sharing similar stories of castro's decades of oppression and hope for the future. >> he was the devil. >> reporter: castro ruled cuba for nearly 50 years but failing health forced him to step down in 2006. known as a tyrant for imprisoning critics and committing human rights abuses, others looked at him as a revolutionary, a fact jose who fled cuba in the site of 70s recognized. >> he is loved around the world because he is standing up to the american power. but the people that living there, they know the true story. >> reporter: president raul

castro broke the news of his brother's death to the cuban people friday night. flags are flying at half-staff as the communist nation observes nine days of mourning. don champion, cbs news, miami. officials say castro's body has been cremated and a funeral will be sunday after a four-day procession throughout cuba. we asked a bay area congressman what his death means to the people of cuba. >> for too long, the people of cuba have lived under a dictator, an oppressive dictator and hopefully, this signals a new pa foard for the cuban people. you know, president obama certainly in his last years in office has opened up the united states and cuban relations in a positive way and i hope with fidel castro now no longer with us, that that will continue to happen. president obama offered his condolences to the family of fidel castro. in a statement he said history will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people

and world around him. he also said cuba will have a friend and partner in the united states of america. president-elect donald trump took a different tone. he said today the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly 6 decades. fidel castro's legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights. meanwhile, a recount of results from the u.s. presidential election is going forward in wisconsin. the green party initiated it. and now it has the support of hillary clinton. wendy gillette reports from new york reporter: hillary clinton's campaign team announced saturday it will participate in a recount of the presidential election results in wisconsin. green party candidate jill stein is calling for recounts in several states that helped donald trump win the white house. her party has raised almost $6 million and filed paperwork friday for a recount in

wisconsin. >> we do not take money from corporations or from political pacs. this comes from the american public. >> reporter: clinton's campaign attorney posted a blog that says, now that a recount has been initiated in wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides. if jill stein follows through as she has promised and pursues recounts in pennsylvania and michigan, we will take the same approach in those states, as well. the president-elect called the recount ridiculous saying in a statement, this is a scam by the green party for an election that has already been conceded and the results of this election should be respected instead of being challenged and abused which is exactly what jill stein is doing. >> reporter: clinton's team says it has not found any evidence of hacking or tampering with election technology and that it was not planning to launch its own recount. but now that it's happening, the campaign says it wants to ensure it's legally represented

in the process. wendy gillette for cbs news. >> the recount in wisconsin is the first in state history. the cost of securing president-elect donald trump's family may go up. plans are in the works to put up the secret service in trump tower in new york city. the service may get an entire floor to protect melania and barron trump while he finishes school. the space rents for $1.5 million a year. taxpayers will be paying for it. but officials say nothing has been set in stone yet. police in san jose are trying to track down the person who sent hate letters to an islamic center. the handwritten letter refers to members of the evergreen islamic center as, quote, vile and filthy people. it also says what president- elect trump will do to them, quote, what hitler did to the jews. officials at the islamic center called san jose police on thursday evening and an investigation is under way. the wet weather didn't stop people from shopping in pleasanton. rain soaked parts of the bay area this morning.

more showers are expected to last throughout the weekend. and powerful waves pointing the coast, too. this was the scene -- wow, look at that -- in pacifica this afternoon. a beach hazard statement is in effect until tomorrow morning. they had big surf being powered by a big northwest swell means a mix of high surf and sneaker waves. as for the rain, the kpix 5 hi- def doppler shows waves of rain driven by a westerly flow that's showing a long band of showers from the central valley to the bayshore. more rain moving over the peninsula and the south bay at this hour. all of it being pushed by a low around redding so more shower on the early-morning hours of sunday. the complete forecast is coming up. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fire that ripped through an oakland rec center that started at about 5:30 a.m. on webster street. kpix 5 reporter da lin is in oakland where people tell him they are devastated by the loss reporter: by the time firefighters got here at 5:30

this morning, the moss wood rec center was gone. engulfed in flames. >> we had 20-foot flames. we had reports of ringing alarm at that tall building because the smoke was so dense. >> reporter: firefighters shifted their focus to protecting this historic victorian next to it. it took an hour to put out the flames but this is what's left of the popular center. >> didn't really believe it. and to see it in real life, it's -- it's heartbreaking. heartbreaking. >> reporter: the director of mosswood says during the weekday, the center serves students with developmental disabilities. it's also home to a preschool and after-school programs. about 50 to 80 kids use it every day. this little girl couldn't stop crying. >> she is really emotional about this. this is a great loss to our family and the community. she has been going here since

kindergarten. we know all of the teachers who are just wonderful. this is an art room. >> reporter: recreation leader margarita rodriguez works with the kids. >> a lot of memories, a lot of children in the halls, projects we did. >> reporter: homeless people often sleep in front of center and on rainy nights like last night, some will break in to stay warm. investigators are looking at that possibility. but they say they don't know how the fire started. >> in the meantime, the city will bus the kids to a center two miles north. >> reporter: oakland mayor libby schaaf is asking for private donations hope to rebuild the center. in oakland, i'm da lin, kpix 5. urgent search continues for two men who escaped from a south bay jail. rojelio chavez and laron campbell have been on the run since wednesday night. they cut through bars at santa clara county's main jail tied clothing together and shimmied down to the ground. search team is using bloodhounds to -- that's not a bloodhound but they are trying to track the two men.

yesterday the dogs followed their scents along the guadalupe river to a spot near levi's stadium. there's a $20,000 reward for information leading to a recapture. and san jose firefighters are filling their boots for burn victims. they are raising money for their burn foundation which helps burn survivors with emotional and financial support. today they set up a tent where people can donate money. a lot of the money goes to help the burn center at santa clara valley medical center. >> i know that they have been really helpful to make sure that we have state-of-the-art equipment and that we have all the funds we need. they also put on a burn camp for our kids and it's really great to see the kids being around other burn survivors. just being normal kids for a week. >> this year they are focusing on raising money for burn garments which help victims heal. and coming up, a holiday shopping season is finally here. sure you don't need to us tell you that. how people are supporting small

driving online sales to a new high.. according to adobe: shoppers eager to snag those holiday deals turned to the internet on black friday driving online sales to a new high. according to adobe consumers spent over $3.3 billion. yesterday alone, that is nearly a 22% increase from last year. analysts project buyers will spend over $655 billion on shopping this month a gain of nearly 4% from 2015. wow. after all that madness at the mall and shopping online, buying locally today helps bay area businesses. kpix 5's susie steimle headed

to pleasanton this afternoon to check with merchants. >> reporter: it could be the most idyllic place to get your holiday shopping done. local students play christmas carols while neighbors search small stores for gifts for the holiday season. >> i bought a wallet. i also bought a bandana. i also bought a movie. and i bought a miniature comb. >> reporter: peyton is only nine but he will tell you shopping in pleasanton is, well, pretty pleasant. >> i love it. it's a small town. but it's like paradise. >> reporter: it's also the kind of place where small business saturday thrives. >> really fun in spite of the rain, which is great. people -- we have opened early at 9:00 and we had people here at 9:00 and pretty much been like this all day. >> reporter: every year, the downtown business association encourages people to come out and shop small on this day. in pleasanton, they say for every $100 spent this year, 46 of it stays in the community. >> it reminds people especially

the national media to remind people how important small businesses are and then that kind of seeps through. they get a taste and they want more. >> reporter: judy wheeler wants to remind people that shopping small makes a big difference as does slowing down avoiding the hustle and bustle we see everywhere else. in pleasanton, susie steimle, kpix 5. people in california may have to start paying more when it comes to watching netflix. a few dozen cities are considering charging people for streaming video. in pasadena, city council members put its 9.4% tax on hold after catching heat. cities are passing the tax to collect lost revenue on land lines and cable tv. according to silicon valley.com, several cities in the bay area could implement a tax without voter approval including alameda, albany, menlo park and san leandro. the internet association director believes it would be a violation of federal law because the government doesn't

allow tax on the internet. >> utilities are electricities and water and sewer and all sorts of other types of actual utilities, websites and apps don't fit that mold whatsoever. >> the federal law hasn't stopped cash-strapped cities across the country including chicago and pennsylvania. if cities in california start collecting the tax it would likely end up in court. protests over the dakota access pipeline about to get fear the. the protestors say they will not leave. the army corps of engineers plans to close the land where hundreds of protestors have been camping out. and protestors say the indigenous people are the wardens of the land and the government can't push them out. the plan is to shut it down on december 5 and anyone who doesn't leave will be arrested for trespass. one of the largest gingerbread houses in california is now on display in san francisco. still ahead, we show you the giant display. >> we have some sweet news ahead too as we look live

the culinary team at the a giant gingerbread house is stand inside one of san francisco's best known hotels. the culinary team at the fairmont built the two-story victorian house and used thousands of bricks and 1200 pounds of icing. the hotel says it's the largest of its kind in california. the gingerbread house is on display through new year's day. visitors can make donations to benefit the do it for love foundation. we have some showers moving into the bay area at this hour. we'll continue to get wet tonight. we have a look at the kpix 5 hi- def doppler, rain light to moderate over parts of the bay area but it's breaking up before another wave moves in

tonight. but you can see pretty good showers from just east of sacramento down to east of livermore. and then look at the showers, some of them coming down good just over on the bay bridge. in fact, the approaches to the bay bridge as you will see in a moment backed up. so here and there we have scattered pretty good rain coming down. more overnight tonight being pushed along by the low pressure that along the california-oregon border. then it will usher waves of rain in tonight overnight with no break and the rain-snow in the mountains six to 16 inches of snow expected by 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. snow down to 3,000 feet. skiers, rejoice! it's a cold system that's lowering the snow level. gusty winds, as well. chain controls in effect and travel delays a distinct possibility. talked about this but doesn't hurt to emphasize the fact that surf is up, big breakers, rip

currents and sneaker waves. i don't know why you would want to dive into the ocean but if you do, have a care. that's the backup i'm talking about. there's debris in the road westbound at san francisco at treasure island. that's not helping things but that backup is all the way up into albany on 80 so it's taking a while to get into the city tonight: right now san francisco 52. oakland 55. santa rosa 51. this is not a huge amount of rain but fairly decent. quarter inch at hayward, about the same at sfo. .33 in san jose and a fifth of an inch in redwood city. half inch in san rafael. same in kentfield and for a change santa rosa not leading the pack just about a third inch. on the futurecast we'll be looking at waves of rain coming through, this is tomorrow morning before sunrise. we'll have plenty of showers around the bay area. rather quickly it dries out. but don't be surprised by a rogue shower or two tomorrow and look at monday at 3 a.m. so it's overnight but another
