been able to get on muni for free. sfmta says that the muni computer system has been hacked but it has not affected any of the services. a spokesman with the transit agency says it is an ongoing investigation. riders will see the metro gates at several stations are wide open right now. and the system is not reading any payment cards. when we were down in the embarcadero station just a few minutes ago, we saw that the ticket sales kiosk were also out of service. >> i think it's terrifying. i really do. if they can start doing this, you know, here, we're not safe anywhere. >> this is part of black friday deal or something? i have no idea. i didn't know it was out of, like, service. >> reporter: sfmta says they are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. the hack does more than just affect riders but sfmta employees, as well. my source tells me employees right now aren't sure if they are going to get paid this

week. now, my source also said the hack affected the email system. no word on who might be behind the hack or what the hacker or hackers want in return. again, sfmta is only confirming that there has been a hack and they are working to resolve this issue. reporting live in san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. in the bay area tonight the weather is a big story. look at the pounding waves in pacifica. a beach hazard statement is in effect for tomorrow afternoon for high surf, sneaker waves and strong rip currents. it's been a rough day on the roads, as well. this is drivers on the bay bridge on the way into san francisco this morning. not much easier on foot. in oakland people had their heads down, umbrellases up as they did some small business saturday shopping. in the mountains a great time for skiing. this is a look from our "sierra at tahoe" cam. you had to be careful getting there though. the snow is piling up on 80 where they have winter storm warnings in effect. chain control in effect from blue canyon to truckee and big

surf is powered by a big northwest swell which means a mix of high surf and sneaker waves. the hi-def doppler shows waves of rain driven by a westerly flow that's showing a long band of showers stretching from the central valley to the bayshore. and there's more rain moving over the peninsula and the south bay at this hour all being pushed by a deep low up around redding and that means more showers through the early hours of sunday morning. we'll have the complete forecast just ahead. search teams looking for two escaped inmates in the south bay were hoping the rain might help lead to their capture. but kpix 5's sandra osborne shows us tonight they are still out there somewhere. >> reporter: investigators offering a $20,000 reward and are following up on tips today after 33-year-old rojelio chavez and 26-year-old laron campbell broke out of the santa clara main jail the night before thanksgiving. >> definitely i'm a little bit worried because i live close by. >> reporter: using unknown tools, the escapees cut through

jail window bars and fashioned a rope out of bedsheets rapelling from a second-story window. yesterday a tip led detectives to the guadalupe river trail. k-9s followed for six months when they fatigued. >> they could be hanging out in a marsh. it's dense so you can't see them. >> that's making me more cautious. >> reporter: the scent was along this trail. now investigators will be looking for surveillance video from nearby businesses. we found cameras along some buildings right here. detectives hoping footage in the search areas can help. today san jose's mayor tweeted asking for the public's assistance letting others know to call police if they see rojelio chavez or laron campbell. >> i keep my phone handy if i

them. she has been released from the hospital and is with her family and she will talk to investigators after she has time to recover. an outpouring of support after officer robby chon has hit with a skateboard. he is in critical condition. it happened on thanksgiving avenue when the 12-year veteran responded to a disturbance call at a local business. surveillance video shows the suspect hitting officer chon in the head with his skateboard knocking him out. he tried to use that same skateboard to get away but was arrested a short time later. tonight a "go fund me" page set up for officer chon is three- quarters of the way to its $100,000 goal. tonight, police are investigating a possible hate crime at a well-known moss income san jose. police say that somebody sent a letter to the evergreen islamic center addressed to, quote, the children of satan. in it the writer called muslims, quote, a vile and filthy people and advised them

to packer bags and get out of dodge. the writer signed off by saying, long live president trump and god bless the usa. police say the same letter was sent to two mosques in southern california. this is the scene on the streets of miami's little havana tonight where word of fidel castro's death has prompted an outpouring of emotion in the center of the cuban exile community. people are drinking and waving the flag and others shouting freedom in spanish. cuba's long-time leader died yesterday at the age of 90. word came down on state radio from castro's brother raul who is the president for the pass 10 years. to supporters fidel castro was a revolutionly hero. to critics, he was a ruthless dictator but for better or worse castro was cuba for nearly 50 years. he built a soviet style communist government 90 miles from the united states while pushing the world to the brink

of nuclear war. tonight greg mills spoke with one cuban-american who lived through it all. >> reporter: in echo park today, cuban-americans were celebrating the death of fidel castro. >> we couldn't sleep all last night. we were waiting for this day. it's good. >> i don't like to get happy weather someone dies but we make an exception out here. [ laughter ] >> reporter: as a teenager fernando moved to miami in 1960 and with hundreds of other cuban exiles, he returned to cuba in the ill-fated bay of pigs invasion to overthrow castro. many were killed. many others ended up in a cuban prison including him. >> when i think of him, i will think of all the suffering especially myself. i left for 17 years and never got back. >> reporter: he left for the u.s. for good when he got out of prison and left his family behind. >> they're all gone. i never saw them again. >> reporter: arlene brought her cuban [ indiscernible ] echo >> we're here supporting celebrating the death of a tyrant of a dictator.

trump wants to take us back and close off our connection with cuba. i think the best think for cuba with fidel castro gone is to continue to open up to the west and what freedom and democracy means. >> nancy pelosi added castro's death opens a new path for cubans. she said in a statement generations of cuban political prisoners, democracy activists and families suffered under fidel castro's rule. in their name we'll continue to press the cuban regime to embrace the political, social and economic dreams of the cuban people. back in august, 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick wore a t-shirt featuring pictures of castro meeting with malcolm x in the '60s. just this week, kaepernick defended his decision to wear that shirt in a conversation with reporters from miami. kaepernick he also said he was merely endorsing malcolm x's views on fighting oppression. by the way, the 49ers play the dolphins in miami tomorrow. and still to come, a popular bay area rec center burns to the ground in the

buildings, we had reports of ringing alarm at that building. >> reporter: firefighters shifted their focus to protecting this historic victorian next to it. it took an hour to put out the flames. >> its hard breaking to see it. it's heartbreaking. >> reporter: the director of mosswood says during the weekday, the center serves students with developmental disabilities. it's also home to a preschool and after-school programs. about 50 to 80 kids use it every day. this little girl couldn't stop crying. >> she is really emotional about this. this is a great loss to our family and the community. she has been going here since kindergarten. we know all of the teachers who are just wonderful. this is an art room. >> reporter: recreation leader margarita rodriguez works with the kids. >> a lot of memories, a lot of children in the halls, projects we did.

menlo park and san leandro. critics say it may not be legal since the government doesn't allow taxes on the internet. >> utilities are electricity and water and sewer and all sorts of other types of actual utilities. websites and apps don't fit that mold whatsoever. >> so far, no cities in california have started collecting the controversial tax. if they do, they will likely end up in court. well, you mix that rain with a little bit of sun and some clouds and the results somewhere over the rainbow on interstate 880 our photographer shot this. beautiful rainbow came out and it made for quite the sight. but it also indicated there's still moisture out there. and there will be right through the early hours of sunday morning. the kpix 5 hi-def doppler radar is showing that there's still low pressure lazily moving in. cape mendocino. that's triggering numerous showers -- i hardly ever say numerous -- over the bay area. a big band of fairly heavy showers south of stockton over

to livermore on top of lick observatory and scattered showers right on top of the peninsula and south san francisco. and you can see all these, you know, these are things popping up like popcorn offshore so tonight you will think oh, it's clearing up and then get dumped on it's clearing up. it's like life. you think everything is rosie and you get dumped on. hm. [ laughter ] >> satellite and radar, low pressure that's off northern california, it will be clearing out eventually tomorrow. we'll have to wait until the afternoon and a chance of lingering showers especially in the south bay tomorrow. that's a switch. we'll clear up from the -- it came from the north, will clear up first in the north so tomorrow morning a few south bay showers before we all go sunny. beach hazard statement big swell to about 14 feet out of the northwest. and big breakers, as well. that means sneaker waves threat and strong rip currents you. winter storm warnings through sunday with 6 to 14 inches of snow. and the good news for the skiers that snow level is nice and cold and low all the way down to 3000 feet that.

inside one of san francisc' best- known hotels. the culinary team at the fairmont built the two- stor a giant gingerbread house is inside a hotel in san francisco. the culinary team at the fairmont built the two-story victorian style house using 8,000 bricks and 1500 pounds of icing. the hotel says it's the largest of its kind in california. the gingerbread house is on display through new year's day. visitors can make donations to benefit the do it for love foundation. >> we had 60 pounds of gum drops and candy canes, malted chocolate balls and then we have about the same amount of candy in reserve for repairs. over the course of the next six weeks. >> the giant gingerbread house is an annual tradition at the fairmont. it will be on display you there new year's day. >> wouldn't it be great to walk up and grab a brick? just start gnawing on it? >> how many kids do that? that's why they have lots of candy in reserve to repair it.

[ applause and cheers ] >> and at freeing of political prisoners! >> meanwhile, a recount of the results from the u.s. presidential election is going forward in wisconsin. the green party initiated it. now wendy gillette says that the presidential runnerup is adding her support. reporter: hillary clinton's campaign team announced saturday it will participate in a recount of the presidential election results in wisconsin. green party candidate jill stein is calling for recounts in several states that helped donald trump win the white house. her party has raised almost $6 million and filed paperwork friday for a recount in wisconsin. >> we do not take money from

corporations or from political pacs. this comes from the american public. >> reporter: clinton's campaign attorney posted a blog that says, now that a recount has been initiated in wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides. if jill stein follows through as she has promised and pursues recounts in pennsylvania and michigan, we will take the same approach in those states, as well. the president-elect called the recount ridiculous saying in a statement, this is a scam by the green party for an election that has already been conceded and the results of this election should be respected instead of being challenged and abused which is exactly what jill stein is doing. >> reporter: clinton's team says it has not found any evidence of hacking or tampering with election technology and that it was not planning to launch its own recount. but now that it's happening, the campaign says it wants to ensure it's legally represented in the process. wendy gillette for cbs news.

>> the recount in wisconsin is the first in state history. trump tower in manhattan might be getting a new tenant, the secret service. the agency is considering renting a whole floor of the building to establish 24/7 command post for protecting the future first family. the going rate for the space, about $1.5 million per year. but it's not just the cost that is raising eyebrows. the trump organization owns trump tower so taxpayers would essentially be paying the president-elect for his own security. well, the feds are putting pipeline activists in north dakota on notice get out by december 5 or go to jail. the army corps of engineers sent out a litter saying it will close the land -- sent out a letter saying it will close the land at the dakota access pipeline site. the protestors say indigenous people are the wardens of that

[ crying ] >> reporter: our investigation has identified over 100 cases where see the back collapses have resulted in serious injury or death mostly to children in the back seat. automakers and regulators at the national highway traffic safety administration have known about the problem for years. but the seats meet or exceed the federal standard for strength a standard that hasn't changed since it took effect in 1968. >> i will not stop until this issue is fixed. >> reporter: massachusetts senator ed markey is calling for nhtsa to make changes. >> that seat has never changed in terms of safety and the

evidence is overwhelming that it endangers children especially in the back see the when there's a crash. >> reporter: automakers didn't reports all case of seat back collapse. markey's office found nearly 10% of the accidents we identified were not reported. a step required by law if the car is less than 10 years old. it makes it harder to say there's a problem if the carmakers aren't reporting there's a problem. >> there's a huge regulatory black hole within which the automotive industry is able to escape responsibility because they do not report these accidents. >> reporter: the hastings sued after their accident. ford settled. >> if the seat did not collapse, he wouldn't have suffered so much. he has to live with this for the rest of his life. good as you will see on the kpix 5 hi-def doppler right now, plenty of action all the way from the gold country town of san andreas streaking back through modesto into livermore. then across parts of the east bayshore line. and look at this. more rain coming in dotting the bay area especially the north bay from just a little bit east of santa rosa down to 101 by corte madera and san rafael and the 101/580 split. san francisco right over 101 before the golden gate bridge. so plenty of showers tonight. it will ease up a little bit as we get into sunday afternoon. so we'll finally catch a break before more rain comes in for early monday and parts of the morning commute on monday. winter storm warning though posted through sunday with six to 14 inches more snow coming in snow level down to 3,000 feet so it's an icy system gusty winds, as well. and chain controls in effect, travel delays as well if you are heading for the hills. speaking of travel delays,

there's four accidents westbound on the bay bridge heading into the city tonight. and the traffic is backed up all the way westbound into albany so it's slow going coming into dinner reservations in the city tonight. temperatures low 50s right now for much of the bay area. this is a chilly day today. and futurecast shows it will be wet too through the evening. look at all the showers blossoming overnight. tomorrow morning at 4 a.m. we have rain but the preponderance of the rain will be in the south bay at sunrise tomorrow before we clear it out from north to south. so you see sunday clears up and then watch. monday morning, here comes more. none of these are big rainmakers but it keeps things wet so we'll get more rain through tomorrow morning. then we get a break tomorrow afternoon. another shot of showers early on monday before we dry it out. and keep it cool right through the weekend. how about the raiders? taking on the panthers, sun clouds cool and dry by then. the travel weather forecast, up in the hills snow and down in the valley fog and rain. overnight lows tonight we get

>> the thing i'm concerned about is probably two-thirds of my mom's family is coming to the game and probably two- thirds of them are going to be dressed in raider gear, which is --i'm not kidding. i'm serious. they love me but they are going to have their raiders under their panther gear that's for sure. 49ers underdogs will have two road games. they are going to try to end their nine-game losing streak. after sunday's game in miami, they are going to stay in orlando before heading to chicago. now, for some, this is a much better trip than when they stayed at youngstown a few years back during similar back- to-back road games. >> no offense to anybody in youngstown, but, you know, i think it's going to be sunny and not going to be, you know, 35 and snowy and rainy. >> only one week. so at least we have good weather out here all year round like we're going to, like, you know, minnesota or something to capitol hill for a week i'd be like, no let's go back.

life and she says she has former kpix 5 anchor barbara rodgers to thank for that. tonight only on "5," barbara shares the story. >> oh!! [ laughing and crying ] >> you're going to make me cry! >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: the last time i saw cory crow was almost 30 years ago when she was just a few weeks away from her third birthday. >> a what heart? >> a green heart. >> that's what kind of heart you want? >> reporter: cory was sick in 1987. without a heart transplant, doctors gave her only a few months to live. but her mother's insurance had denied coverage for the surgery. 30 years ago, some insurance companies considered transplants for children under five as experimental. cory's mother didn't give up. doctors at stanford medical center have performed 40 transplants on patients under 19. >> so that's what i did. i called channel 5. >> reporter: and i told her story. >> when i came to see you that first time what was your feeling that day when i showed up at your front door?

>> i was just shock. shocked and relieved that maybe somebody will do something. >> we were able to get the coverage that we needed so that she could have her transplant. >> reporter: was it painful? do you remember it being painful or -- >> well, i don't remember the actual pain. but i do remember the itching. >> reporter: cory got her new heart at stanford hospital in 1988. she was one of only 20 children ages one to five to get a transplant in the u.s. that year. she says growing up after the surgery was hard because the medication she had to take caused side effects that drastically changed her appearance. >> i endured a lot of teasing from children and i also was made fun of from a lot of adults, as well. >> reporter: how did you handle that as a little kid? >> there were a lot of tears. >> reporter: and cory's tears didn't end with her childhood. in 2005, the unthinkable happened. her new heart began to fail. cory was so sick that she weighed only 67 pounds. >> unfortunately, back when i

was a kid, in the '80s and '90s, you needed a biopsy every three months. so -- >> reporter: that damaged the heart? >> right. i received my second heart transplant on july 30 of 2006. >> reporter: because cory has been so fortunate, she is volunteering. her cardiologist says she is helping to save lives. >> getting more organs donated is key to the success of organ transplant especially in children so the more spokesmen we have and especially a young lady like cory who can speak specifically to the black community, any help we can get is important. >> reporter: cory is now one of the longest surviving heart transplant recipients in the country, which is why she recently contacted me. >> i said to myself that if i live to be 30, then i want to meet everyone who was involved in allowing me to live all the way to be 30.
