investigators whose job it is to track them. it was a chaotic scene this morning where county sheriff deputy was injured while helping agents with a drug bust. >> according to homeland security the coast guard had been tracking a boat. believed to be smuggling drugs up california's coast. federal agents along with deputies in the sheriff's office were waiting onshore for the alleged smugglers to land. that is where the deputy was hurt. more typical in southern california federal investigators tell kpix that drug smugglers coming out of mexico had been making a push northward in recent years in an effort to allude law enforcement. two years ago our cameras were there when smug lers abandoned a boat and thousands in pot as their get away car. this suv was stuck in the sand. this time, they arrested 3 people on a suspected smuggling operation. sophisticated.

on wednesday they repelled from a second story window. a $went,000 reward is offered for information leading to their capture. on friday,a a tip led the detectives to where k-9 teams tracked the scent for 6 miles before they lost it. it was a nasty night out on bay area freeways with rain- related crashes and spinouts everywhere. san skwroes a debrow in the roads damaged two dozen cars. chp officers say they resundayed to northbound 880 just after midnight where 21 vehicles had front end damage and blown out tires. apparently they ran over an axl left over from an earlier crash. no one was hurt. at least 10 of those drivers ended up needing a tow. on southbound 680 in san jose, a close call for 2chp officers when a pick up truck driver lost control and crashed into their patrol car. it happened at 11:30 last night near capitol avenue while the officers were investigating a separate crash. both officers are expected to

be okay. a couple hours later others another close call, the driver and passengers of had car walked away unhurt after it spun out of control near 880 and 237. and heavy rains may be the cause of it this rollover in san josea. chp officers saying a driver slammed into another car, broken down, on the side of 280. causing it to roll down an embank the several times. no one was hurt. a man died in a car accident. well was a lot of standing water at the time and there could be more during the execute tomorrow morning. here is why. kpix hi-def doppler picking up the next system on the way. we have to look all of the way up to find it. on overnight, now, the rain will work its way into the bay area before sunrise. it could effect the morning commute. we will have details about timing and amounts later in the

broadcast. ticket machines are back to normal at the muni station after a hack allowed people to ride it for free most of the weekend. we are live at the station with an update, kate? >> reporter: we have new details from sfmta officials on this hack and why the metro gates were open in the first place. but today, no more free fares for riders. we saw metro gates were tpupzal again as were -- were functional. they were hacked on friday and they opened up the gates on to minimize impact to the riders as they worked to get to the bottom of it. >> transit service was not impacted. our safety systems are in tact. because it is an ongoing investigation there is not much we can say because of that investigation. we are working extremely hard to find out exactly what we are

forceful. i think he and his campaign need to do more. >> the battle still brewing even in this quiet neighborhood. in concord, kpix5. well, the police in fremont recently bought a $23,000 worth of software to monitor social media without saying a word to the public. the east bay times reports the department signed a pair of contracts with companies that overrer social media monitoring and tracking tools -frp the police chief told papers that the department does not have plans to use the technology to track people. instead, the tool is on a need to know basis. when the officers are investigating gang activity. school violence or security threats and because the software contract totaled less than $25,000 the department did not need the city council to sign off on it. california homeowners are now enhancing the security of their home by changing the look of landscaping. it is defensive gardening.

feds were waiting but they could not have anticipated what happened next. >> kpix5 is live with how this wild scene unfolded. devin? >> federal investigators were one step ahead of the alleged drug smug lers last night. homeland security said the coast guard was tracking this boat ask this ship and as it sailed north. that enabled federal agents and deputies with the sheriff's office to be in position when the alleged drug smugglers came ashore. some how in the confusion and the chaos a sheriff deputy was injured. thankfully those injuries are nonlife-threatening. federal investigators say the drug smugglers out of mexico have been coming further north to avoid law enforcement. a similar shipping that you will see years ago after the get away car and the suv was stuck in the sand, weighed down by 1,000 in marijuana. now, federal investigators have not said much at all about what type of trugs were seizeddor or
