developments. maria. >> reporter: guys, rogelio chavez is on the run but laron campbell was arrested last night at his sister's home. his capture like something out of a movie. >> the sheriff's office is pleased to announce that escaped inmate laron campbell has been returned to custody. >> reporter: he is back in a jail jumpsuit after six days of freedom. >> campbell was staying with his sister. >> reporter: a tip led investigators to his sister's antioch home more than 60 miles away from the jail. campbell didn't run this time because he fell into investigators' laps. >> they determined that campbell was hiding in the attic and campbell then crashed through the ceiling onto the floor where the marshals service and antioch police took him into custody. >> reporter: campbell and this man, rogelio chavez, allegedly sawed through windows bars at the santa clara county main jail the day before thanksgiving then used bedsheets to rappel from the second floor. chavez managed to remain one step ahead of deputies checking

out of a gilroy motel before they arrived over the weekend. deputies have said all along it's only a matter of time before he is caught. >> extremely satisfying and there are few things more satisfying than taking desperate violent people back into custody. >> reporter: investigators say they are confident they will capture chavez. they surrounded a home yesterday -- or an rv, rather, yesterday thinking he was holed up inside. hen't. as for the jail, investigators say they will install more cameras very soon. live in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. new at noon, a 15-year-old de la salle high school football player is under arrest accused of sexual assault on campus. concord police say the incident reportedly happened after a football game on november 18. the alleged victim is a teenaged girl who attends carondelet high school. the case will be turned over to

the district attorney's office. an antioch man was shot and killed while breaking into a home. police got the call at winding lane just before midnight. they found the 21-year-old with multiple gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. police say the people little there knew the man and they are cooperating with the investigation. no one has been arrested at this time. investigators are looking into what led to a deadly accident before a scheduled performance by cirque du soleil in san francisco. a technician was hit by a telescopic lift last night while preparing for the show. last night's performance at at&t park was canceled. new at noon thousands of california national guard members will likely not have to repay enlistment bonuses that were mistakenly issued. house an senate negotiators have agreed to forgive their debts. the bonuses had been incentives for service in iraq and afghanistan. that was a decade ago. the full house and senate still need to approve it. house minority leader nancy pelosi will keep her position as the top elected democrat in

the house. house democrats today voted in a secret ballot this morning. the final vote 134-63 for pelosi over ohio representative tim ryan. ryan's calls for a leadership shake-up failed to resonate with many democrats, who believe that pelosi's experience is needed for the coming fight against president- elect donald trump and the gop- led congress. the 76-year-old california congresswoman has run the house democratic caucus for the last 14 years. president-elect donald trump is tweeting about the future of his business empire and announcing two more cabinet picks. marlie hall reports from trump tower in new york. >> reporter: steve mnuchin is president-elect trump's pick for treasury secretary. he spoke to reporters at trump tower this morning. >> our number one priority is going to be the economy, get back to three to four percent growth. we believe that's very sustainable. >> reporter: mnuchin is a former goldman sachs executive who was the finance director for mr. trump's presidential

campaign. the trump transition team also announced billionaire wilbur ross will be nominated for commerce secretary. the president-elect will hold a news conference on december 15 to discuss plans to leave his business empire while in office. in a series of tweets this morning, mr. trump said, i feel it is visually important as president to in no way have a conflict of interest with my various businesses. it's unclear if the billionaire plans to turn over his business holdings to his children or put them in a blind trust. transition officials tell cbs news the plan does not include a release of his tax returns. mr. trump had dinner last night with mitt romney and future white house chief of staff reince priebus. romne one of mr. trump's harshest critics during the campaign said they had a wonderful evening. >> these discussions with him have been enlightening and interesting and engaging. >> reporter: sources tell cbs

news mr. trump's considering romney, retired general david petraeus, and rudy giuliani for secretary of state. marlie hall, cbs news, new york. >> the president-elect is celebrating a deal to prevent almost 1,000 job losses at a major manufacturer. he and vice president-elect mike pence will travel to indiana tomorrow to announce an agreement with the air- conditioning company carrier to keep nearly 1,000 factory jobs in the state. 9 months ago, carrier's parent company had planned to close two indiana facilities and move more than 2,000 jobs to mexico. a north carolina district attorney says that a charlotte police officer acted lawfully when he fatally shot a black man. the case set off several nights of unrest in charlotte. >> their recommendation was unanimous. that bears repeating. 15 career prosecutors and their recommendation was unanimous. >> the officer is also black. keith lamont scott was shot on september 20th. police video showed officers

shouting for him to drop a gun several times. scott's family insisted that he was not armed. a nearby store surveillance video shows the outline of a holstered gun on scott's ankle. the husband of a shasta county woman who was missing for three weeks says his wife was chained and had bruises and burns when she was found thanksgiving day. keith papini made a written statement to "good morning america." it also criticized online rumors and assumptions that the story was false. shasta county sheriff told the "associated press" monday investigators have no reason to doubt the story. north dakota's eager to end protests against an oil pipeline as the cost of law enforcement rises. state leaders have approved an emergency request to borrow $7 million in addition to 10 million previously approved. the u.s. army corps of engineers has set a monday deadline for people to leave

the premises or face the consequences. sioux are concerned it will be disrupted and drinking water may be contaminated. on wall street the dow is up about 31 points! the index may close at another record high today. earlier, a surge in the price of oil sent energy stocks up sharply. tough times for san mateo- based gopro best known for innovative camera products. they are announcing today they are cutting 15% of its workforce affecting roughly 200 employees. back in january, the company laid off about 100 workers. gopro says it will shut down its entertainment division to put more focus on its core products. also company president tony bates plans to leave by the end of the year. there is a new push to help protect nail salon workers around the state from exposure to chemicals in the workplace. anne makovec on the efforts meant to ensure healthy standards reporter: addressing the not so pretty side of it, the

director of the useap's office of environmental justice came to lee anne's nails in alameda to talk about new protections for nail salon workers. >> there are a lot of immigrants, a lot of asians, islanders, working these nail salons. that's a vulnerable population in the united states. >> reporter: after prolonged exposure to the harsh chemicals present in nail salons, workers face an increased risk of cancer, birth defects or miscarriage. here in the bay area, several counties have safe salon certifications for those who reduce chemical use and increase ventilation. >> it's good for me and for the environment. >> reporter: that program is now going statewide. the epa is a warding $120,000 grant to the state's asian health services to pilot a new program. >> this loan program will be very important to really give the capital and resources to nail salon shops that are waning to become healthy nail

salons. >> reporter: in alameda, anne makevoc, kpix 5. state lawmakers will be in a special session tonight to discuss how to fund road repairs in california. there's no sign that there will be a vote. the current funding level is less than $2 billion a year. analysts say it would cost $3.5 billion a year just to maintain the roads at their current state. it would be about double that amount to get the roads in good condition. and in some cases, local governments are finding ways to fund road repairs themselves. earlier this month, santa clara county voters approved measure b, a 30-year half cent sales tax aimed at transportation needs. still ahead homes burned to the ground, thousands of people forced out. the damage from a devastating wildfire in the south. >> and it could change the way you watch your favorite shows and movies. a long-awaited feature comes to netflix. >> what a day it's been. we have some chilly temperatures, scattered showers. now the first day of december

people and destroyed at least 150 homes and other buildings. demarco morgan reports... the largest fire to hit tennessee in a century has killed four people and destroyed 150 homes and buildings. demarco morgan reports that thousands of people are thankful they escaped the flames but are trying to figure out what's next. >> reporter: parts of gatlinburg, tennessee look like a scorched ghost town with smoldering homes burnt to the ground. >> we're still having because of the wind trees that are falling, power lines down, that's limiting our access into some of these areas. >> reporter: the flames

hollowed out homes and buildings. many people forced to evacuate sought refuge in shelters like this one run by the red cross. greg and his family spent the night here after escaping the fire. >> you're looking out of every window you can. you're watching for a glow in the distance. you know, smoke everywhere. >> reporter: darian moved to gatlinburg from mississippi about a month and a half ago. though only had time to grab their 14-month-old son william and his diaper bag. >> we don't know what to do or what we're gonna do. we don't have anywhere to go. [ sirens ] >> reporter: officials say more than 400 emergency workers from multiple departments are working on putting out the fire and clearing debris. >> i have gotten calls from the governor of every surrounding state saying how can we help? >> reporter: gatlinburg mayor mike warner is trying to aid his community while dealing with his own devastation. >> i had an opportunity to drive through town and confirm the fact that my house was gone

has offered the option for about a year. pope francis met today with veteran film director martin scorsese and his family. scorsese' latest film a religious drama called silenced will be shown today at the vatican for 40 invited guests. the 2 1/2 hour film is said to be his passion project 27 years in the making. it's about two jesuit priests looking for their lost mentor in japan in the 17th century during a time when christianity was forbidden. it's set to be released in u.s. theaters december 23. time for a check of our weather with roberta. >> what an interesting day. we started off with an overnight low of 35 degrees throughout much of the tri- valley this morning. then clouds filtered in. temperatures up a couple of degrees and then the rain came. right now the rain is falling around the rim of the bay but let's look at this hi-def doppler radar. it's minuscule when you see the cells drifting across the bay area east of vallejo now just

grocer. nd always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. i love these pears. dessert in the hand. exercise is good for your heart. now researchers say that the type of exercise can make a big difference. here's cbs reporter riley carlson. >> reporter: when barbara heads out on her bicycle she knows she is getting more than just fresh air. >> i know it helps my heart. i can tell after my blood pressure goes down. >> reporter: new research published in the british journal of sports medicine reveals cycling might pay off big in the long run. researchers studied the exercise habit of more than 80,000 adults for over a decade. they found people who took part in certain sports didn't just lower their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. they lowered their chance of dying from any health problems. those who cycled routinely cut their health risks by 15%. >> this is really the first time that scientists looked at
