threat. an armed man stormed a popular washington, d.c. restaurant to self-investigate a conspiracy theory. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, a criminal investigation has been launched into the oakland warehouse fire that killed at least 33 people. crews are still searching the building and the death toll is expected to rise. it is believed as many as a hundred people attended friday night's party and the victims include 17-year-olds. the warehouse had no sprinklers and few exits. the building had been described as a cluttered death trap. edward lawrence is in oakland. good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. right now, fire crews are inside that building, they are hoping to finish going through it later on today.

a make-shift memorial has been set up a block away outside there. very few people actually went to the hospital in this. as one alameda county sheriff sergeant said, you either made it out or you didn't. as recovery teams continue to search the now charred site of oakland's ghost ship warehouse, the only thing the friends and family of the missing can do is wait. this man was there with his girlfriend when a fire tore through the two-story building friday night. >> my brother is in there and i want to find him. >> reporter: most of those confirmed dead so far range in age from teens to 35 years old. authorities say at least one of the victims was a 17-year-old minor. another, a deputy's son. >> one of our deputies that we work with, lost his son in this fire. and so we are still dealing with that. >> reporter: the building wasn't permitted for events like the electronic dance party held here

that night attended by 50 to 100 people. it also wasn't permitted for living but many artists called the warehouse home, including carmen. >> seeing everything like this orange wall of fire, it was -- i don't know. it felt like seeing a monster. >> reporter: questions are now mounting over whether the fire was preventable. firefighters say the building had no sprinklers. it's possible many of those inside could not find the only way out. a make-shift stairway made of wooden pallets. the sheriff has asked potential families of victims in this to hold on to dan sources from toothbrushes or hairbrushes. the crews are 50% of the way going through the building and trying to go through the rest of it later on today. no cause for the fire has been determined. anne-marie? >> edward lawrence in oakland, thank you so much.

the warehouse had been the subject of warnings and complaints for at least 12 years. v more coming up on "cbs this morning." in north dakota the chairman of the standing sioux rock tribe that is protesting against the dakota oil pipeline told npr now it's time for protesters to go home and enjoy the winter with their families. the tribe and others who oppose the four-state pipeline are cautiously optimistic now that the government says it will look for an alternative route. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: hundreds of protesters cheered after hearing the army corps of engineers announcement it will not grant an easement for the dakota access pipeline to cross just north of the standing rock sioux reservation. >> either we make it or break it, and i guess we made it. >> reporter: the tribe and its supporters claim the pipeline will threaten the tribe's water source and cultural sites. >> remember from day one, we said there will be no black

snake going through here. >> reporter: the four-state 3.8 billion dollar project is almost complete in north dakota, except for the segment that would run under the missouri river. the dallas-based company building it has said it is unwilling to reroute it and incoming president donald trump has pledged his support for the pipeline. omar villafranca, cbs news, cannonball, north dakota. in a statement, the company building the pipeline said it has done nothing but play by the rules and it fully expects to complete construction of the pipeline. president-elect donald trump has expanded his search for secretary of state. this week, he plans to interview an oil company executive and a retired navy admiral. mr. trump is being criticized for breaking diplomatic protocol by taking a call from the president of taiwan. but members of the trump transition say mr. trump is no rush to choose a top diplomat.

>> there are a number of people he may not have wanted to leave industry positions to go and serve the government. they are coming forth now and expressing interest. >> overnight, a federal judge ruled michigan must begin its presidential recount at noon today. state officials wanted to delay the effort, but the court sided with green party presidential nominee jill stein who opposed the delay. mr. trump beat hillary clinton by more than 10,700 votes in michigan. >> to the political upheaval in europe. italian prime minister matteo renzi resigned after voters rejected his proposal for constitutional reform. renzi said the reforms would have cut italy's bureaucracy and made the country more competitive. the defeat is seen as another boost for the populist movement. on the heels of donald trump's victory in this country, and the brexit vote. in austria a center left candidate easily defeated his right wing challenger.

alexander van der bellen was up against far right populist norbert hofer. hofer hoped to tap growing anger. >> i think some of the right wing supporters feel supported by the trump election. they feel like, oh. if the u.s. can do it, we can do it too and finally be against this detriment. >> germany's foreign minister called the win a good sign against populism in europe. the prime minister of new zealand is stepping down. john key is resigning after eight years as new zealand's leader. he said he wanted to leave while he was still on top of his game. and fidel castro is now in turn in the city where he declared victory in cuba's revolution. raul castro placed his brother's ashes in a granite boulder in the eastern city of santiago. the ceremony yesterday ended nine days of mourning on the island for the long time leader. 11 people were killed by a

hotel fire in paeckkistan. the fire broke out this morning in karachi. some of the victims are foreigners and hotel guests tied bed sheets together to try to escape. some had to jump before they reached the ground. 50 others were injured. the fire started in the hotel kitchen. the cause is under investigation. the death toll from those wildfires in east tennessee now stands at 14. nearly 1,700 homes and other buildings were destroyed or damaged by the fires. another 134 people were injured. this weekend, officials said a mass text message telling people to evacuate was never sent because communications were lost. jurors will resume deliberations this morning in the murder trial of a former south carolina police officer. they indicated friday that they might be deadlocked in the case of michael slagr who killed a black motorist last year in north charleston and a witness videotaped the shooting. now to the weather and areas of sleet and snow are possible today from the great lakes to

the northeast. the northern edge of a weather system could create difficult travel conditions along the northern tier of the country. the first snowstorm of the season in chicago began yesterday morning. over 6 inches fell at o'hare airport. more than any single day snowstorm in december since 2005. it was also the first snowfall in wisconsin. most of the state got between 1 and 4 inches but it will melt today when the temperatures rise. and iowa received its first measurable snowfall of the season. 2 to 4 inches fell in the northeast part of the state. coming up on the "morning news." baby on board. a woman gives birth mid flight, forcing the plane to make an unexpected detour. and the president-elect fires back after "saturday night live" takes aim at his tweets. >> kellyanne, i just retweeted the best tweet.

"the boston globe" reports that a hundred people were displaced by a fire that roared through a cambridge neighborhood. no one was hurt in the ten-alarm saturday but 15 buildings were destroyed or damaged. the cause is nt yet known. nola.com reports second thoughts about louisiana stand your ground law after the killing of a former nfl player. a vigil was held saturday for

joe mcknight who was black. a white man admits to killing him thursday during a traffic incident. the man was released after questioning and faces no charges. the post and courier reports that the charleston church massacre suspect changed his mind about defending himself. dylann roof asked the judge if his lawyers may be present when the guilt phase of his trial starts wednesday. the judge has not ruled. roof faces the death penalty in the killings of nine people last year. "wall street journal" reports the first confirmation that apple is interested in self-driving cars. a letter sent to federal regulators indicates the company's interest in the software such cars would need. tech watchers say apple is unlikely to design and build a complete car. still to come, uniform snafu. american airlines employees say their new work outfits are making them sick.

s&p lost 21 points. the nasdaq finished 143 points lower. flight attendants at american airlines want their new uniforms recalled. american issued new uniforms for its employees in september. the union says flight attendants are reporting headaches and rashes and hives and burning skin and eye irritations. american and the union are testing the uniforms. the airline has offered uniforms made of alternative materials. united airlines new fare structure is under fire from new york senator chuck schumer. passengers purchasing united's basic economy will only be allowed a carry-on bag that fits under the seat and charged a fee if they want to put a larger bag in the overhead bin. schumer says all passengers should have access to overhead storage.
