challenging congress to fight false propaganda littering social media. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning the weather report for a lot of folks is bone chilling cold and a lot of snow. heavy snow and freezing temperatures stretch from the sierras to the great lakes to the northeast. by the weekend single digit wind chills will hit the deep south. the snow and freezing temperatures making travel difficult and dangerous. hannah daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning. two separate snow systems have triggered blinding snowstorms that have led to several deadly pileups in several states. the heavy snow whiteout conditions and subzero temperatures are expected to last throughout the weekend. as snow plows got to work in upstate new york crews in ohio

worked into the night, towing vehicles involved in a major pileup along interstate 90. >> pretty aggravated about it, you know, i'm trying to get home. it's cold in this weather. >> reporter: the chain reaction crash that injured more than a dozen people was one of many triggered thursday by a lake effect snowstorm that brought whiteout conditions to the midwest. in michigan cars and semis were seen smashed together in a deadly pile up along i-96 involving 40 vehicles. >> there are three confirmed fatalities with this accident. we have not yet identified those victims. 11 other victims were transported from the scene. >> reporter: the moving storm system dumped more than a foot of snow an hour north of syracuse, new york, yesterday and caused more crashes. >> we want you to get to school, we want you to get to your job safely. so please take your time in the snowy conditions. >> reporter: another system out west coated mountains in california with snow and roads in oregon with ice. at least one motorist was killed

in benton county in a head-on collision. >> there's a lot of people planning on shopping or getting stuff for the christmas season but right now it's not worth it. >> reporter: winter doesn't officially begin for another 12 days. and this winter weather has already led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights. anne-marie. >> hannah daniels in new york. thank you so much. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wb sfwlchlt says the extreme cold will be around for a while. >> the cold has seeped across the country this morning from windchill values near 20 below zero across north dakota close the freezing mark down towards new orleans saturday morning that's what we will wake up to start the weekend, single digit and teen wind chills down into the deep south. by saturday morning we will see some 20s across north florida, the city center a little milder, certainly frost and freeze warnings there. 20s across north georgia, much of mississippi, alabama, and

south carolina. also watching the lake-effect snow, continues to crank, a couple more feed are possible and the heaviest bands downwind of the great lakes through saturday. we're watching the next storm system moving in by this weekend. by sunday the snow stretching across the midwest, rain on the south side of it. this storm will move toward new england and the northeast as we look toward monday, a sloppy start to the workweek. i'm meteorologist eric fisher. president-elect donald trump continues his thank you tour in grand rapids, michigan today. last night he was in iowa where he encountered the first protests as he visits states that helped get him elected. mr. trump selected andrew pud zer to lead the labor department. he is a union krit nick who opposes large minimum wage increases. he also announced he's nominating terry branstad to be the u.s. ambassador to china. mr. trump says china has to start playing by the rules. >> you have the massive theft of

intellectual property, putting unfair taxes on our chps, not helping with the menace of north korea and the massive devaluation of their currency and product dumping. >> it was announced mr. trump will keep his executive producer credit on the tv show celeb brit apprentice. >> coming up on "cbs this morning" we will talk with paul manafort donald trump's former campaign manager. hillary clinton is calling on congress to fight what she described as a fake news epidemic. during a capitol tribute to retiring senate minority leader harry reid clinton said the issue is a danger that must be addressed quickly. >> it's now clear that so called fake news can have real world consequences. this isn't about politics or partisanship. lives are at risk. >> clinton's speech follows an incident in which a gunman occupied a washington pizza restaurant mentioned in a false report linking a child sex trafficking ring to clinton.

secretary of defense ash carter made an unannounced stop in afghanistan this morning. carter is there to consult with senior afghan officials and u.s. military commanders concerning the fight against the taliban. he is also deliver a pre holiday pep talk to the approximately % 10,000 u.s. troops stationed there. the president of south korea was impeached peechd the morning, beinpark geun-hye. she is south korea's first democratically elected leader to be removed from office. south korea's prime minister will serve as acting president. critical video was played at dylann roof's murder trial in charleston. roof is charged with gunning down nine black church goers in a racially motivated attack. s. err video shows roof pulling into the church parking lot and entering the church. 45 minutes later he's seen cautiously leaving the church

holding a black pistol. it was revealed roof's mother suffered a heart attack in court as prosecutors described her son's actions in their opening remarks. this morning john glenn is being remembered for his courage, patriotism and intellect. glenn was the first american to orbit the earth. he also served this country in war and as a united states senator. he died yesterday at the age of 95. >> reporter: from the cosmos to capitol hill and then back again. >> godspeed, john glenn. >> reporter: john glenn was an astronaut, a politician and a patriot. >> i had i guess you could say 47 years of federal years, and we're proud of this country and what it provides for people. i still think we are the example for the rest of the world. >> on february 20th, 1962, john glenn famously became the first american to orbit the earth. >> oh, that view is tremendous.

>> reporter: when he came back glenn became a national hero and received a ticker tape parade in new york city, the largest since world war ii. >> i got on this project because it would probably be the nearest to heaven i would ever get and i wanted to make the most of it. >> reporter: years before he made history aboard friendship 7 spacecraft glenn flew fighter planes for the marine corps wracking up 49 missions during world war ii and career. in the senate dplen was a key player in democratic politics but his hero status didn't translate into national political appear. >> i believe this nation of ours can be number one in in world. >> reporter: and his bid for the presidency in 1984 never really got off the ground. glenn's political career took another hit in the late '80s when he and four other senators known as the keating five were investigated for accepting hefty campaign contributions from savings and loan owner charles keeter. senator glenn was eventually cleared of wrongdoing but a

senate commission found he used, quote, poor judgment. after serving nearly a quarter century on capitol hill glenn retired from politics in 1998. that same year nearly 40 years after his first nasa journey glenn returned to the stars. >> lift off of discovery with a crew of six astronaut heroes and one american legend. >> reporter: at the age of 77 the first american to orbit the earth made history once again, becoming the oldest human ever to travel into space. the nation's senior astronaut returned to earth with a message for other americans his age. >> i think too often people set their lives by the calendar. old folks have ambitions and dreams, too, like everybody else and why don't they work for them? don't sit on the coach someplace. that's my attitude. >> reporter: and glenn followed his own advice staying politically active until the end, publicly opposing the decision to end the space shuttle program. president obama awarded him the medal of freedom in 2012.

giraffes face extinction and an aviation official breaks his silence in a crash investigation. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the miami herald reports on claims made by a bolivian air traffic official about the charter jet crash last week in colombia. she says her superiors tried to cover up the flawed flight plan after the plane went down killing 71. investigators say the plane ran out of fuel. dallas news said several baylor officials are being sued for libel by a former football coach. art briles said they made false statements implying that he knew about and covered up alleged sexual assaults by his players. he was fired in may. the "washington post" reports grim new statistics about america's open joyed epidemic. federal stats for 2015 show that heroin deaths speed exceeded gun homicides nearly 13,000 and that is a first. the deaths from opioids topped 30,000 for irst time in

recent history. the denver post says federal regulators are softening their stands on inn flight phone calls. proposals released yesterday would leave the decision up to the airlines provided that passengers were warned that they might hear a little chatter. a final decision is years away. and national public radio says giraffes are now being listed as vulnerable to extinction. conservation experts say their numbers have fallen as much as 40% in the last 30 years. illegal hunting and habitat loss are blamed. still ahead, a new drink that will have pokemon go fans frothing. starbucks is offering an official frappuccino inspired by the mobile device game. me. mystery beauty treatment.

on the "cbs moneywatch" now mortgage rates soar and starbucks whips up a drink for pokemon go fans. jill wagner has hand that more. >> for the second day in the row major stock indices closed at all time high. tech and energy companies rose as the price of oil climbed. the dow jump 68 points, the s&p 4 points. mortgage rates climbed for the sixth straight week. the average rate on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage hit 4.13% according to freddie mac. last year at this time it was 3.95%. long-term interest rates have surged since the election. next week the federal reserve is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate for the first time in a year. at&t has started paying out some $88 million in refunds in a bogus charge scheme known as cramming. they got caught padding

customers' bills with unwanted services such as ring tones or special text messages. it settled with the ftc in 2014, more than 2 million customers will be credited $31 on average. more people are expected to fly this holiday season. airlines for america says that it expects that 45 million passengers to fly on u.s. airlines from december 16th through january 5th. that's an increase of 3.5% from last year and it's in part because of an improving economy and reduced airfares. and starbucks is introducing a pokemon go frappuccino. the frozen ras buyery and blackberry flavored drink will be available only for a limited time and only available in starbucks stores listed as pokemon stops and pokemon gyms. the idea is to lure those pokemon go players into starbucks. >> it's a good idea. you will have all these pokemon go players with their heads down bumping into your customers at
