center in the south of market area. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at the scene with the work under way. anne? >> reporter: and this is a busy intersection at 4th and howard in san francisco. you can see the work going on here behind me. they think they are going to have this finished by this evening and the roadway paved. but you can see they have a lot of work to do. this is right by the metreon and the moscone center. it was a 12" water main that broke four feet underground. they're replacing ground and will have to repave the road. here's what it looked like right after the water main broke. this was at 3 a.m., gushing into the basement garage of the moscone center. there was no damage but they had to pump the water out. public works rerouted the water

flow. so no service disruptions right now. as they are repairing this 12" pipe, they have been investigating the cause of the break. it appears to be age. that thing is 120 years old, one of many that needs to be replaced. >> so we're looking at places where, one, we can somewhat identify to the best of our ability more aging pipes through a leak detection program and, where we can do them such that we have minimum impact on neighboring businesses. >> reporter: and they are trying to replace about 15 miles of water pipeline here a year in san francisco. but they have 1,000 miles total. a tall order. no estimate on exactly how much water was released overnight. back out here live now, you can see again it's going to cost a lot as far as the repairs, as well, because it is a really

large job. some of the water got into the hole that crews had dug for the central subway project that's going through this neighborhood. so they had some water collecting there. but again, i'm told, no damage to report. live in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. a broken water main wasn't the only problem in san francisco this morning. this tree was uprooted on van ness near green street. it took some of the sidewalk with it. all northbound lanes had to be shut down as crews sawed it into pieces. the lanes are back open now. to the storm watch now. umbrellas were out in san francisco this morning as rain soaked the streets and gray skies overhead. roberta is tracking the rain now. >> how about that as warm front rolled through the bay area yesterday, it did produce significant rainfall. and that shattered a record at sfo. take a look at that right there breaking the old record established in 2004. 1.32" of rain just yesterday. this is the scene now. it's our live hi-def doppler

radar. we are still picking up some showers around yountville out of napa into fairfield. it's lingering showers with the passage of yesterday's warm front. but look at that now. that is overnight in the north bay. that's some pretty moderate to heavy rain. it sags into the bay area over the lunch hour. and we are going to talk about the impact it will have on your saturday and sunday. that's coming up a little bit later in our newscast. a san jose superintendent is speaking out today about the arrest of a high school teacher. trudy hill is accused of luring a 17-year-old boy into sex. police say the relationship happened from august to november of this year. >> in public education, we have a lot of trust that's established just because we're the system of education. and when an adult violates that trust, because they're in a position of power and authority, it puts a black eye on the entire organization. >> hill is a teacher at santa teresa high school.

she is out right now on bail. police don't believe there are any other victims. new at noon concord police want you to take a good look at this person. he is accused of stealing donation money from the chapel at st. agnes church. surveillance cameras caught him driving away in a blue pickup truck. parishioners also believe he stole someone else's jacket and cell phone. now to the deadly oakland warehouse fire. atf agents are on the scene right now mapping the building and we are expecting an update on the findings later this afternoon. it comes after a shocking revelation that state laws mandate yearly fire inspections of commercial spaces. but the city doesn't have any records of inspectors stepping foot inside the building. the fire prevention bureau blames understaffing. the 2014 alameda county grand jury report found that 4,000 commercial occupancies go uninspected due to competing priority. meantime, all the families who lost loved ones in the fire have been notified.

a complete list of 36 victims was just released. we have it posted at cbssf.com. president-elect donald trump is being called out by the union leader he attacked this week on twitter. on tuesday, trump tweeted, chuck jones who is president of the united steelworkers 1999 has done a terrible job representing workers. no wonder companies flee the country. that's after jones claimed that half the carrier jobs that would stay in the u.s. are still being sent to mexico. >> if trump is sincere about keeping jobs in the country and you guys heard him numerous times, that's what his goal is, we'll sit down and we'll work out something to keep these damn jobs here. >> jones also says he hopes the president-elect can focus less on him and more on corporate greed and unfair trade. an arctic blast is piercing through the midwest now leaving a huge mess behind. multi-car pileups are clogging up roads from pennsylvania to

washington state. we have a look. >> reporter: dangerous deadly storms blasted the east coast and midwest thursday. crews fought against snow but icy roads left dangerou roads. >> one vehicle head on into a semi over the median. >> reporter: heavy snow triggered a 13 vehicle crash. 15 people were reportedly hurt. further down i-90 near the pennsylvania border, a 75-car pile-up shut down the interstate. it remained close for hours in both directions. this man was stranded for an hour. >> aggravating trying to get home. >> reporter: in michigan a semi tractor jackknifed shutting down most i-96.

a massive 40 car pile-up killed three people and injured 11 more. >> it's getting to that temperature, it's starting to ice overcome pounded with the quick snow squall or white-out and i think were all contributing factors. >> reporter: the problem for roads like this one next to me is that they are starting to ice over causing cars to skid. while this storm is supposed to end soon, people are bracing for another one next week. officials in florida are calling it a major public health victory. the governor announced the state is officially free of zika. governor rick scott says mosquitoes are no longer actively transmitting the virus in florida. the zika outbreak reached peak in july. health officials say it's possible it may resurface in the spring when temperatures warm. it was chaos on board a flight that made a fiery emergency landing at chicago's o'hare airport weeks ago.

now the passengers are questioning the airline's evacuation procedures. peter greenberg shows us what passengers really need to do in an emergency. >> 33 heavy stopping on the runway. >> reporter: seconds before the take-off flight 333 stopped its right engine in flames. >> everyone on the right side of the plane jumped up and jumped on to us because as soon as the explosion happened, there was fire. >> reporter: she is one of 18 passengers involved in a lawsuit against american airlines and the plane's manufacturers. boeing and general electric. among the allegations is that american airlines failed to instruct passengers on proper and safe evacuation procedures. but on this cell phone video the plane's overhead bins are open, an indication that some passengers took their carry-ons with them when they left the plane. for any aircraft to be certified as airworthy flight crews have to demonstrate they

can evacuate a fully loaded plane with half the exits blocks in less than a minute and a half. who is training the passengers? that's the question. in this cabin simulator, flight attendants are trained how to evacuate a fully loaded plane. >> leave everything! >> reporter: pauline harrison is a safety instructor delta. >> our biggest challenge is people want to take their luggage off the aircraft. why in the world would you stop and take a selfie or take a bag or anything like that? >> we live in a selfie world. everyone wants that selfie. >> yes, sir. but that person that does that is going to keep from you getting out of the aircraft. >> starts the flow of oxygen. >> reporter: flight attendants say the problem lies with the safety video. as detailed and entertaining as it might be, passengers don't listen to the video. >> only 12 of our passengers had read the safety briefing card before the flight and only about 24 had paid attention to the safety demonstration. >> reporter: chesley sullenberger was on the board the flight now known as the

a light burnt orange tinge is okay but make sure it's very firm to the touch not soft. when you bring them home, store them in a cool, dry place. now, they look like they could store for a long time. but they don't. 7 to 10 days that's the most you want to hold it. otherwise get soft. the wonderful nutritional value will be depleted. and i like them in so many different recipes but you just cut them in half, take the seeds out, put them in the oven. 450 degrees for about 20, 25 minutes. take them out, a little bit of sugar, whatever i put on there, it's going to be wonderful. and i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. nd always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. i was looking at the butternut squash in the vegetable aisle the other day and butternut squash soup perfect on a day like today. hi, everybody! is that so hard to see? there you have vacaville. and then here you have a commute around highway 80 as you pass to fairfield area. that's where we have some of moderate rainfall. otherwise, we do see charlie raine, picking up .7" our weather watcher from vallejo. thank you for checking in. that's so dramatic! this is our live weather camera from sutro tower. we are looking due north. you can see the very tip-top of the towers. oh, there they go over the golden gate bridge. those towers stand 725 feet tall above the bay waters. so gives you an indication that we have that low ceiling so delays at sfo on some arriving flights. we are in the 50s and 60s. not bad at all. currently visibility is an issue due to the fog. no visibility. we are just stuck in the fog at half moon bay. less than two miles now in petaluma. 2.5 in concord back through clayton and hercules. this is a very active weather pattern. we have yesterday's warm front

pass through the area along a very generous jet stream and we are going to see more storms stacked up over the pacific ocean taking that course of the jet stream. so here we go with your futurecast. you can plan your weekend accordingly. overnight is when the rain begins. here you have it at 2 a.m. during the morning, we are totally totally just saturated with rainfall. by the time it heads towards the lunch hour, it's sagging to the south. should be out of the santa clara valley area by about 7 or 8:00 at night. so that's how you can plan your saturday. mostly cloudy for your sunday into monday. up to about .75" of rain in pleasanton. rain in the greater lake tahoe area on saturday. our numbers 50s and 60s. sunset is at 4:51. and it looks like by then we'll see the temperatures pretty steady into the 60s. there's the extended forecast. we have more rain on the horizon after a dry day on monday, tuesday through thursday. it's the time of the season

food with the knights of columbus for thanksgiving and they said be very mindful, these could be your neighbors. you're just basically one paycheck away from needing your services, as well. >> that's exactly right. for some of the people we serve they might be working but still finding that once you paid your rent or paid your medical bills you have very little left over for food so that's what we're seeing more of is people who might never have had to thought they needed to seek assistance. >> so every day we have been receiving funds from people but today i just thought it was a good lesson to try to drive the message back at home on how you can help and where your money is going and if you want more information on how you can donate to "food for bay area families," all you have to do is log on to cbssf.com/give. or go to any whole foods market. they make it so easy. give them 10 bucks, they donate to the food bank. leslie, thank you so much for coming in. thank you -- you came in out of the rain, i really appreciate that. have a great weekend. >> thank you.

a 2.5-year-old chihuahua mix who never seems to need a bath. should i still regularly bathe her and if so how often? she also sent us a photo. this is also an issue that some cat owners face. and for the answer to that, dr. jill chase joins us now with tanner. >> hi. this is tanner, yup. so, um, it's a really great question. i know we often times deal with medical issues on this segment but that's a great basic question. do i bathe my pet or not? that dog is very cute. there are some dogs that don't need to be bathed. their coats are very short. they don't get dirty. the answer is she doesn't need to unless she wants to and then i would recommend a very gentle moisturizing shampoo. however, there are other dogs who are very active and get into everything and they definitely need to be bathed and you can bathe daily. tanner -- it's all right. you can bathe daily if it's a nice shampoo that's not drying
