bam! good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. if you are waking up in the northeast, brace yourself. it's going to feel a lot more like the north pole this morning. that bitterly cold air mass that has targeted the upper midwest arrived overnight and it reaches from the dakotas to new england. at least one death is blamed on the extreme cold. a woman died of hypothermia in st. paul, minnesota. lake-effect snow made for treacherous travel in michigan and more snow is on the way. near buffalo, new york, folks had to deal with whiteout conditions along the snow-covered roads. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says this arctic blast is only the beginning.

>> reporter: cold continues to be the story. so a lot of cold air to go around as we have windchill values 15 to 35 degrees below zero. down to the spine of the appalachians into north carolina. a lot of cold air to go around. this is what we are looking at this morning. the harshest air across the upper midwest and great lakes. by the time we move toward friday morning, that coldest air will be across new england where the windchills will dip below 20 below zero. soaking rainfall across california today. right on down into southern california, as well as quite a bit of mountain snow and that tapers down early on friday. looks like 2 to 4 inches of rain for much of central and northern california and 1 to 3 feet of snow across the sierra. mp need -- much needed. there will be areas of flooding and strong winds. the same storm is a need -- muc. there will be areas of flooding and strong winds. the same storm is -- much neede. there will be areas of flooding and strong winds. the same storm is a trouble-maker this weekend. moves to the other side of the rockies and a swath of snow into the midwest and into new england to kick off the weekend. this is also going to usher in the next blast of arctic air.

another one is already lurking. as we head into the weekend and that slips down much of the west, the plains and the upper midwest. temps 20 to 40 degrees below average. meanwhile, we get a brief warm-up along the east coast and the southeast for saturday and sunday. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. so that winter-like west coast weather that eric fisher reported on is actually expected to last into tomorrow. another storm system, a winter storm paralyzed portland commuters. dozens of crashes were reported by late yesterday. 30-minute commutes turned into five-hour marathons. hundreds of students were stranded on buses because they were stuck in traffic. >> we are just the few students who couldn't get out. there were plenty of students who walked in this weather all the way to southeast portland. >> about 150 miles southeast of there, a moving truck in bend had to be towed from the snow. a measuring stick captured more than a foot of snow in that area and drivers can attest, many drivers had to dig out just to get home.

we are going to move on to tech trouble for yahoo!. the company says it's not sure who is responsible for the largest known cybersecurity breach in history. the digital theft is not recent. it occurred in 2013 more than a year before another massive hack yahoo! announced three months ago. more than 1 billion yahoo! accounts were compromised in 2013 and the breach in 2014 affected at least 500 million users. the stolen information includes passwords and e-mail addresses and phone numbers and answers to security questions. >> it's a stepping stone into other sites, so even if that person doesn't keep their financial information or medical information online, by having the credentials and logging in, it's easy to spoof that person, it's easy to act as that person. >> yahoo! blamed the 2014 attack on an unnamed foreign government. so coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to a tech expert about the yahoo! attack and how you can try to protect yourself from being a hacking

victim. and now to the hack the cia says targeted the u.s. presidential election. the office of the director of national intelligence says it will release more information about the russian attempt to influence the election once its review is complete. cbs news has learned vladimir putin was personally involved. hena daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president-elect donald trump will continue his thank you tour in pennsylvania today, amid new revelations about the russian cyber operation that helped him win the 2016 election. foreign meddling the white house claims mr. trump may have known about. u.s. intelligence sources tell cbs news russia's meddling in the 2016 election could not have happened without vladimir putin's blessing saying, quote, the orders to do it would have had to come from the highest level. the development comes days after the cia said that russia helped

influence the claim to help donald trump win. a claim that donald trump continues to deny. >> they have no idea if it's russia or china or somebody. >> reporter: russian hackers ultimately stole and leaked thousands of private e-mails and opposition research that proved detrimental to hillary clinton's campaign. white house spokesman josh earnest believes mr. trump may have been in on it. >> everything from the republican nominee, himself, calling on russia to hack his opponent. it might be an indication that he was, obviously, aware. >> reporter: republican senator lindsey graham who says his campaign e-mail was also hacked by russia is calling for more sanctions. >> we should tell the russians in no uncertain terms you interfered in our elections. we don't care why. we are going to hit you and hit you hard. >> reporter: the president-elect took a break from relations yesterday to sit down with people from silicon valley. >> i'm here to help you folks do well and you're doing well right now. >> reporter: mr. trump is still sorting out how he'll handle his own business empire as

president. a planned press conference on the issue scheduled for today has since been pushed back to january. and with four cabinet jobs left to fill, the president-elect plans to hold more transition meetings at trump tower this morning. >> very busy at trump towers. hena daniels, thank you so much. overseas this morning, it appears the cease-fire in alep aleppo, syria, that fell apart yesterday, has been revived. new video this morning shows buses lined up ready to begin evacuations from aleppo. the russian military says the last rebel troops and trapped civilians will be leaving this morning. families have been huddled with their belongings just waiting to escape. but there are reports that pro syrian troops opened fire on a convoy and ambulances as they prepared to leave. at least three were wounded in that attack. holly williams has more from istanbul. >> reporter: several thousands civilians, men, women, and children, are holed up in around

two square miles of territory with aleppo now nearly entirely under the syrian regime's control. it's a major victory for the regime, after four years of fighting in the city. but it was won by indiscriminately killing civilians with help from syria's allies iran and russia. syria's president bashar al assad calls the rebels terrorists and in an interview with russian tv, he castigated the west for trying to protect them. >> the translation of their statement is for russia, please stop the advancement of the syrian army against the terrorists. >> reporter: the u.s. has condemned the regime and its friends in russia and iran, but in five years of civil war, america has avoided a direct confrontation with the regime,

fearing a dangerous escalation and perhaps conflict with russia. the price of that policy has been paid by syrian civilians with their lives. the united nations human rights chief said on wednesday that the bombardment of civilians in aleppo by the syrian regime and its allies is almost certainly a violation of international law and he said it may be a war crime. holly williams, cbs news, istanbul. pparis.the city of light. the eiffel tower went dark last night with a show of solidarity for the people of syria. back at home now. closing arguments are scheduled today in the trial of dylann roof charged with killing nine people at a black church in charleston. yesterday, jurors heard polly sheppard's 911 call for help. roof is charged with hate crimes from what prosecutors say was a racially motivated attack.
