coming up at 5:00 on kpix 5 news. another sign. bay area's close ties to the "star wars" franchise. a live look now at that icon in a yoda statue and fountain in front of the lucasfilm headquarters in front of the letterman digital arts center building in the presidio. a lot of people in the bay area worked on "star wars" over the year. so the "star wars" family losing a close member today. bullets fly at a bay area shopping center and as kpix 5's jackie ward records from pleasant hill, violence has erupted at malls across the country. >> it's bizarre how many violent events happen in shopping centers all over the country including crossroads here in pleasant hill. >> reporter: this crime scene isn't something you typically see in pleasant hill. >> an incident like this does shake up the community, for sure. >> reporter: police say they believe a fight escalated into a shooting around 9:15 last night. several bullets were fired shattering storefront windows and hitting the exterior stone work of a starbucks that people

were inside of. >> this is the first shooting that we have had in several months anyway. but it can happen anywhere at any time obviously. >> reporter: witnesses say they saw a man bleeding who appeared to have been shot run toward the coffee shop into a car. police are still looking for the suspect and the victim. fortunately, no bystanders were injured. it was a day filled with brawls all over the country. this one at a mall outside chicago. 1,000 people gathered at the mall before chaos ensued around 6:30. in elizabeth, new jersey, officers armed with rifles and riot shields searched a food court after someone shouted gun. that caused hundreds to run for the exits choking the corridors and injuring 8 people. [ screaming and running ] >> reporter: police in fort worth, texas also responded to a false report of a gunman. >> anytime we're hearing a mall shooting and it's the day after

christmas, you have tons of people holiday shopping, of course [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: in at least one case, police say social media may have played a role in these events. back here in pleasant hill, police are still investigating the shooting as they continue to look for the suspect and the victims. in pleasant hill, jackie ward, kpix 5. happening today in hawaii, president obama is hosting a tribute 75 years in the making. this afternoon, shinzo abe will be the first japanese prime minister to make an official at pearl harbor. chip reid reports from honolulu. >> reporter: had the surprise attack by the japanese on december 7, 1941, at pearl harbor killed more than 2400 people. 1177 sailors died on the uss arizona. in may, president obama made a historic visit to hiroshima, japan, the united states dropped an atomic bomb there in

august 1945 killing more than 50,000 civilians. mr. obama said he wanted to remind the world of the agony of nuclear war. >> we have a shared responsibility to look directly into the eye of history and ask what we must do differently to curb such suffering again. >> reporter: earlier this month, the japanese prime minister said his visit to hawaii would be an opportunity for reconciliation. caroline kennedy the u.s. ambassador to japan says this is about both nations finding peace. >> what they really are doing is, um, showing their respect and to those who sacrificed. >> reporter: the tributes are an important step forward according to this retired admiral former commander of pacific forces. >> it's not that that history will be forgotten. but it will be as a historical event that's led to greater things, not as something that will nonet history of both countries. >> reporter: with that shared history the two countries head

into a new year and a new administration. prime minister abe met with president-elect trump in new york just days after the election. ambassador kennedy is confident the u.s.-japan partnership will remain on solid ground. >> i think the bond is so strong and has so much bipartisan support, i think president trump will recognize that. >> chip reid, cbs news, honolulu. russian investigators are one step closer to finding why a military jet crashed national black sea this after crews found one of two black boxes. a test pilot says that investigators could retrieve data from it within the next few days. sunday the military jet crashed just two minutes after taking off from sochi. 92 people were on board including dozens of singers from russia's military choir. two people dead in fresno after a small airplane crash shortly after take-off yesterday near the sierra skypark airport. the plane went down directly into the water of the san

joaquin river just north of the runway. faa records show the plane was registered to a fresno man. ntsb investigators are on scene right now. it is not yet clear what caused the crash. >> a year after rains, the access roads by the river are muddy and we have a few light vehicles down there four-wheel drives that were able to drive down, ems personnel, the supervisor was the one that first made contact with the victims in the aircraft. >> and it took firefighters several hours to recover the bodies before they turned over the scene to the faa. this morning a 3.3 earthquake striking off the coast of malibu. it struck about 3 a.m. about 6 miles west of there. the quake was 9 miles department. more than 200 people reported feeling a sharp jolt this morning. also starting on the first of the year, there's now a any way to save cash -- a new way

checking wall street the dow is up again 21 points. the better business bureau is out with the top scams for 2016. as chris martinez reports, the scams vary in name but they are also similar in the way they work. >> reporter: countless americans have received a call similar to this one including mary. >> he says to me, this is the irs. >> reporter: a con artist posing as an irs agent told her if she didn't pay her family's taxes she would be thrown in jail. she paid nearly $100,000.

>> he said don't tell anybody. don't call anybody. because your house is bugged. >> reporter: the better business bureau says tax cons were the top reported scam of 2016. in other popular scams, criminals pose as debt collectors, say you have won sweep states or offer a job. online purchase scams are when victims buy items from a fake website. >> this happens to anyone. >> reporter: the better business bureau says the various phone scams have something in common, the con artists want money right away. >> they love to create a sense of urgency to get you sort of a heightened emotional state where you need to get them that money immediately. >> reporter: that's what linda williams told us earlier this year. a con artist called her claiming she had won $50,000 but first she had to wire them several up front fees. >> i guess i hoped that this was real. >> reporter: and the scam artists won an untraceable form of payment. >> they are asking you to transfer money through a wire transfer service or asking you

to pay with a gift card, money card, um, green dot. those are big red flags. >> reporter: experts say if someone is demanding money or if the offer sounds too good to be true, it's probably a scam. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles. if you are looking to return a gift, beware, do it sooner rather than later. some big stores are tightening their windows for returns. among them it, macy's requiring all returns within a year instead of anytime. kohl's created a january 31 deadline for premium electronics. and costco switches its return period on major appliances from open-ended to 90 days. it seems like there's a new explosive viral video every couple of days. so what was trending in 2016? >> all right. let's take a look back at some of the most shared stories of the year. >> reporter: 2016 was a year chockful of viral trends. are you ready? on your mark, get set, "pokemon

go"! the digital scavenger hunt became a phenomenon seemingly overnight with players searching for invisible pokemon on the streets on the front lines even in the state department. and because it can't have nice things it also led to the discovery every dead bodies, people being robbed and drivers playing, um, when they shouldn't. a kansas college freshman became an overnight star after a thief stole his kit-kat bar leaving behind a note that basically said, give me a break, i was hungry. it went viral and eventually caught hershey's who made it up to the student with over 6,000 snacks. sweet justice. and if 2016 is known for the election and the election ends up being known for debates, then the debates will surely be known for the bone. ken bone the debate contributor was a viral sensation no one saw coming. in a debate with no winners he came out on top garnering a

huge following and his own izod commercial. after a 3-year-old child fell into a gorilla closure in the cincinnati zoo the gorilla harambe was shot and killed. the shooting sparked covered of the incident. social media debates on the actions taken. protests, memes and hashtag cries for justice for harambe, a twitter handle that's still trending online. one woman's self-inflicted case of the giggles led to international stardom after a viral video of her mom chuckling at a chewbaka mask became the laugh heard around the world. chewbaka mom enjoyed her 15 minutes by doing the talk show circuit, tatooing her claim to fame on her arm, even meeting the real chewbaka peter maheu. who is laughing now? 2016 also saw viral trends that nobody wanted. case in point those creepy clowns sightings of weirdoes in scary clown masks starting in south carolina, began popping up all around the country with no explanation. most posed no real threat but it gave everyone the willies

things in oakland. this will be the fourth year that he and his family have teamed up with feed the children to help bay area families during the holidays. the san jose sharks are also giving back. >> the hockey team just made a $30,000 donation to help a peninsula high school special needs hockey group. the team posted this photo on twitter. not only did the sharks foundation give money to help the group but it also invited those players to watch the sharks practice live and in person. and afterwards they got to check out the locker room where they were gifted with new jersey and equipment. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
