"star wars" fans prove the force will always be with carrie fisher. this morning the obama administration will outline its response to russia after reports that it hacked the presidential

elect. in the meantime, president-elect trump downplayed the breach. >> i think we ought to get on with our lives. and the country will see snow today. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i-wendy -- i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. debbie reynolds became a hollywood star as a teenager died yesterday, the day after her daughter carrie fisher died. reynolds was 84 years old. speaking to los angeles radio station knx, her son todd fisher detailed his mother's final moments. >> the last thing she said to me was that she really missed her daughter and really wanted to be with her. and literally 30 minutes later, she was -- she had this stroke

and that's exactly what she did. >> the daughter of reynolds former husband joely fisher tweeted some of the magic people have left the tribe. for the moment i am inconsolable. for eight years she was my mom. she was pure energy and light when she came on stage. chris martinez has a look at the hollywood icon's impressive career. ♪ >> reporter: debbie reynolds was just 19 years old when she landed a leading role in the iconic 1952 film "singin' in the ra rain" opposite gene kelly and shooting into stardom on the silver screen. reynolds appeared in many movie musicals in the 1950s and earned an academy award nomination in

the unsinkable molly brown. she was married on april 1st, 1932. her family moved to burbank, california, where a miss burbank beauty contest crown led to a movie studio contract and a new stage name, debbie reynolds. ♪ >> reporter: at 23 years old, reynolds found hollywood romance with singer eddie fisher. >> a bride and groom, debbie and eddie are finally mr. and mrs. >> reporter: the couple had two children together including actress carrie fisher but their star-studded marriage ended in scandal when fisher left for her best friend, actress elizabeth taylor. reynolds revealed she and taylor eventually made up. >> she was as dumb as i was. so fall in line. >> reporter: reynolds continued to search for love marrying and divorcing twice more. >> my personal life is always sort of like this. a choo-choo train saying i think i can, i think i can. i seem to marry very poorly.

i have no taste in men. >> reporter: she later became a fixture in las vegas opening her own hotel and casino where she often performed live. reynolds was also a notable collector of film memorabilia and amassing thousands of props and costumes including many hollywood "connick dresses and the collection grew bigger than she ever intended. fisher, known best for her iconic role as princess leia. fans gathered in anaheim and

elsewhere around the country last night honoring fisher with a light saber tribute. other fans created an impromptu star on the hollywood walk of fame. they took over a blank star with carrie's name pasted on the sidewalk. they say it will stay put for a few days. heavy wet snow and powerful winds is bearing down on interior new england this morning. the system is expected to last through tomorrow. eric fisher, chief meteorologist, at our boston station wbz, has more on the developing storm and the new year's eve forecast. >> reporter: the story today a coastal storm toward new england and this becomes potent by the evening brings rain to the main cities and boston and providence as well as new york city. for interior parts of the northeast we are looking at significant snow as that storm deepens. also drags in a lot of strong wind for thursday night. we are looking at 1 to 2 feet across much of vermont, new hampshire and maine and many in interior new england the biggest

storm they have seen in a couple of years because last winter was so quiet. we look toward the weekend and new year's eve a look at the national map. southeast is where we have got some problems with rain and thunderstorms and especially near the gulf coast. we will a have you snow showers and flurries in the northeast and in the west coast showers in central and southern california and even low land snow possible in and around seattle. the reason for that is big blast of arctic air is going to slide down across the west coast starting this weekend, well below average temperatures will be expected here. meanwhile, a little bit of a warm-up by sunday for the start of 2017 across the southeast. and to preview the first full week of the year, a lot of cold on the map, especially in the western united states, well below average temperatures. perhaps even some records. your warmest temps if you want to escape winter will be south florida if it's been very warm all month long. i'm meteorologist eric firer for cbs news. there was heavy and sometimes golf ball-sized hail

in tennessee. dozens of cars were damaged. no injuries. now to foreign affairs. the escalating tension between the united states and israeli. secretary of state john kerry delivered an unprecedented attack against israeli for settlement building. afterwards, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu accused the obama administration of an anti-israeli bias. craig boswell has our report. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry laid out his vision for peace in the middle east. >> the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a adjust and lasting peace between israelis and palestinians. >> reporter: but kerry's plant did not go well over in israeli. prime minister benefitijamin netanyahu blames the u.s. >> we have an absolute incontestable evidence that the united states organized, advanced, and brought this resolution to the united nations

security council. we will share that information with the incoming administration. >> reporter: it's not just israeli opposing secretary of state kerry's ideas for peace in the middle east. president-elect donald trump is also criticizing the obama administration. wednesday morning, president-elect tweeted we cannot let israeli be treated with such distain and disrespect. they used to have a great friend in the u.s. but not any more. the beginning of the end is a horrible iran deal. now this. u.n. stay strong, israeli. january 20th is fast approaching. last night, mr. trump reported from his resort in palm beach, florida. israeli is still moving forward with settlements. wednesday, a housing committee approved new construction of a four-store building in east jerusalem. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. comurp ing up on "cbs this

dash cam video from the netherlands show what tesla's new autopilot system can do. a warning sounded just before a collision in front of the tesla. the system's radar bounces under the car ahead to detect danger. white house petitions have a disappointing success rate and chicago police get a new accessory. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "chicago tribune" reports that all city police officers will be wearing body cameras by the end of 2017. that is a year earlier than

planned. the killings of two suspects by officers in the last three years prompted a federal probe of police practices. the "los angeles times" says tighter security is planned for next monday's rose parade. the steps follow recent attacks in europe in which trucks were used. patrol cars and barricades filled with water will shield the parade route. "the new york times" reports that bribery could be compromising security at the nation's borders. more than 200 homeland security workers have taken more than $50 million in bribes during the last ten years. the paper screened thousands of agency documents and court records. "the washington post" says white house petitions have led to few concrete actions. the we the people website was started five years ago. one petition prompted a law that lets customers transfer cell phones to new networks. more than 225,000 people signed another petition calling for the deportation of justin bieber to canada.

in the new year, marijuana will be legal for recreational use in eight states. plus the district of columbia. in states where pot is legal, doctors are seeing an increase in a violent illness. >> i thought i was dying. >> reporter: for more than two year, lance crowder was having severe abdominal pain and vomiting. no local doctor could figure out why. finally, an emergency room physician in indianapolis had an idea. >> and the first question he asked is if i was taking hot showers to find relief. when he asked me that question i basically fell into tears because i knew he had an answer. >> reporter: the answer in chs. it's caused by heavy long-term use of various forms of marijuana. for unclear reasons, the nausea
