the fireworks are in place. in just a few hours- the streets along the embarcadero in san francisco will be packed for a lebration. the barricades going up, and the fireworks in place. in just a few hours, the streets along the embarcadaro will be packed for a move celebration. let's get right to kpix's kate mcgaron, who joins us live. kate? >> reporter: hi, brian and betty. it's actually pretty exciting now. they are lining up these barricade along the embarcadaro, getting ready to shut these areas down. hundreds of police officers will be here in anticipation for the hundreds of thousands that will be gathering here tonight. we know that today's pyro sharp is the company behind san francisco's big new year fireworks show, putting the final touches on the shells that will be

launched sky high at the start of 2017. there will be two barges that will be placed at a safe distance in the bay waters about an hour before the show. >> the coast guard, police department marine unit will be out on the water, making sure folks stay a safe distance away. >> now, meanwhile, san francisco police and fire are keeping a close eye on the crowds. over the past few days, the city has been busy prepping for tonight. as we mentioned they've been putting up barricades,es a fences along the embarcadaro. we're told the fireworks show will actually be synced to some music. you'll also have to do it, braving the cold weather. kate kogiran, kpix 5. first, here's the scene at times square, new york city about an hour ago. two million people are expected to tornado watch the annual ball drop there. and security expected to be

tighter than usual because of recent terror attacks overseas. wendy gillete takes us to the center of is celebration. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands are already braving temperatures in the low 40s to wait for the waterford crystal ball to drop in times square, ringing in 2017. they come from all over the world. where are you from? . >> mexico. >> from chile. >> i'm from china. >> reporter: and they got here early to get the best spot possible. what time did you get here? . >> at 6:00 this morning. >> long day. >> cold in the morning, too. >> it's waiting for the day to get over. >> reporter: despite those long hours and doing security checks, standing in pens, and not being able to leave even to go to the bathroom, they're thrilled. >> no potties, no food, and we're here, and we are so excited. >> especially my fourth time in a row, being here. >> the best place to be around new year's. >> reporter: a number of

performances tonight, including mariah caray, and gloria estefan. >> security is extra tight, with a new decision, sand trucks, like this one, to prevent terror attacks like those in nice and berlin. seven thousands police officers in uniform and undercover are patrolling the area. >> such a big:. there are so many people who want to keep it safe. >> reporter: there are additional teams and helicopters are overhead to keep the massive crowds safe as we say good-bye to 2016. wendy gillete for cbs news, new york. >> if you're planning on going out, there are plenty of transportation options caltrans -- are all offering no-cost service starting at 8 p.m. several keep running through 5:00 a.m. bart riders will still have to pay. however, it's extending service through san francisco until 3:00 a.m. and if you prefer uber, get ready for a busy night. uber expects its drivers to

provide more than 15 million rides to new year's revelers worldwide. be aware of significant surge pricing on your ride home. if you are heading outside, better bundle up. 36 for napa, and 41 degrees for santa fe, san francisco. about 46. the fireworks forecast, we'll have partly cloudy skies around at 8:00 tonight, temperatures near 50. by midnight, they will plunge on the embarcadaro in the mid-40s. no big deal. it's going to be january after all. and it is an unsettled week ahead because of low pressure right overhead tonight, and more on the way. we'll have complete details of the forecast in a few minutes. for many, the cold could be down-right dangerous. shelters are rushing to add more beds as the bitter

cold moves in. >> reporter: margot bravo islation out beds at the center in santa fe. >> we can never get enough blankets. >> reporter: marco knows what it's like to be cold and sleep in the streets. to make sure more people like him spend the night indoors, santa clara county is adding beds at its shelters. this one will add a hundred to increase capacity to 350. >> we're crowded. we're stretched. when you add another hundred people on top of that, it's very difficult. we need additional donations as far as to take care of food,, for instance,. >> reporter: home first is the nonprofit that serves the homeless at county shelters. the centers are welcoming donations of blankets, towels, and sox. it's also opening four pop-up cold weather shelters in the south bay on monday. the cold spell is also happening at a time when more homeless people are dying each year in santa clara county. the reason for the trend is not clear. >> i don't know you can make sense of it, because

it's so senseless. the longer someone is homeless, the more likely they are to die from the complications of having lived homeless. >> reporter: home first says it's been a much colder start to the winter compared to last year, so they're seeing more homeless people sooner. in san francisco, goodwill just wrapped up its annual donate-a-thon. there was live entertainment and food for anybody who took part, and it was also your last chance to get a tax receipt from goodwill for 2016. organizers call it donation celebration, because it benefits donors and receivers. >> goodwill is a nonprofit, a hundred years strong. what we do with donations is we turn them into jobs. so there are a lot of folks in our community who are shut out of the job market who are down on their luck, in really in need of a second chance. that's what we do here at goodwill. we take the donations. we sell them through our nonprofit retail stores, and we're able to employ lot of

folks in san francisco, santa marino county. >> organizers say their goal is to fill 75 trucks today. at last check, they were almost there. new at 5, it's the last weekend in business for three popular bay area restaurants. on monday, their doors will be closed for good. they're located in san francisco's union square. sushi boat, caletto's and lori's diner in walking distance of one another. jackie ward is live at lori's diner, which is known for its cheap food and vintage decor. jackie? >> reporter: when you're sitting inside the county, you can't help but smell the bacon, the grilled cheese, the milkshakes. this has been a staple of union square for 32 years to locals and tourists alike. the people who work here will be all be moving to the center street location. still, they're sad to see this space -- >> happy new year. >> reporter: for 25 years, martha delvino has been bus ling around this space, taking care of customers and brightening people's day.

>> here a listening time. >> reporter: martha tells us the building was bought a year and a half ago. the new owner wants to completely renovate the building. >> now the building -- and everything is ready to go. so we have to go. >> it's sad, because it's one of those places that we found that reminds us of we're from michigan. kind of remind us of the little diners we have back there. >> reporter: danielle is in the city with her family to ring in 2017. stopping here before move has become a tradition for them. >> the decor and atmosphere is phenomenal. the food is great. the kids like to eat here, and even though they're very busy, we almost always can walk in and get counter service. been a great place to come. >> kind of got a little bit of an olden style -- experience some of the, like, 1900s and that kind of era. it's kind of a little bit older, has kind of a family feeling. >> reporter: don't worry, you can still satisfy your french toast craving at

lori's diner's other two locations, like the one here on center street or here in deli square. there's something about this location on maven that will always be missed. >> it's smaller. it's more personal. it's cozy. you know, we get to know the people more. and we made a lot of friends here, too, because we're able to tuck to the people, too, as well as serve the meals? we come here for things like this. looks like it's been an amazing place. >> reporter: the owner of this now building is getting rid of this space. they're getting rid of sushi boat next door. they're making it a big open space. upstairs on the second floor will be a steak house. the third near will be used for roof-top dining. the owner says he's already looking for a third location he homes to open sometime next year. you can come here until monday. that's your last chance to eat a meal here. in san francisco, jackie warren, kpix 5. a group of nearly three

dozen russian diplomats and their alleged spy chef are having one final party in san francisco before getting booted out of the country. the group scheduled to hold a new year's gala tonight. they only have a day left before they're forced back to moscow. all part of president obama's pay back for russian hacking in a run up to the november elections. in a new video out of washington, d.c. of some russian diplomats from other parts of america boarding a plane to head back to russia. officials tell us the bay area diplomats will be taking vans to lax in northern california and heading out from there. this just in: we're learning there's been a deadly attack in a nightclub in istanbul. authorities say an armed assailant opened fire during a move celebration, killing 35 people. police have cordoned off the area as they continue to investigate. there may have been more people involved in the attack. investigators believe they entered the club, disguised as santa claus. nearly 17,000 police officers were on duty in the city at the time.

some of them camouflaged as santa. artists who want to make the city, living spaces and warehouses safe are being offered a safety workshop. the event being organized by bay area artists in response to the oakland warehouse fire to avoid similar disasters. organizers are working with the firearm on the workshop, and they'll get a safety presentation along with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. >> artists use a lot of toxic, so -- but many don't know what kind of face masks to use, for example, and how to store them. they need to be stored in metal cabinets so they don't burst into flames. and i just thought let's bring the firearm in and give us a training. >> it will be held at the braman theater on tuesday, 6:30. organizers hope it's just the first in a series of workshops. and coming up, everybody's worst nightmare. how crews rescued a group of people stuck dang ling a hundred feet in the air. >> plus a look at how people

on camera for passengers aboard the "sky cabin ride" at knott's berry farm in southern california. firefighters had to rescue 20 passengers last night.. and lower them to safety! they had been trapped for more than seven hours.. after the ride stopped more than 100 feet in the air.. thankfully, no one was hurt. it's unclear why the ride got stuck.. osed until an after the ride stopped more than 150 feet in the air, they were left dang ling. thankfully nobody was hurt. not clear how or why the ride got stuck. it will remain closed until they finish the investigation. in much of the world it's already 2017. here's a look at some of the sharp celebrations. . >> more than a million people

filled australia's sidney harbor to ring in the new year. special share shaped fireworks honored the late david bowie. in downtown dubai mesmerizing fireworks shows centered around the world's tallest building, burj khalifa. . and in hong kong, a dazzling fireworks display over victoria harbor ushered in 2017. back here in the bay area, hundreds of families took part in the count down to noon across time zones event. it is the tenth year for the celebration of the children's discovery museum of santa fe. organizers say today was a chance for kids to celebrate their own move just in case they don't make it until midnight tonight.

telescope to see it. you can look for nit the western sky. if you miss the comet tonight, don't worry. nasa says comets will be brightening up the sky in 2017. >> we should see. in the meantime, the comet is is a 6 magnitude. you could be in the darkest skies on the earth and barely with the naked eye see it. if you're in the cities you may see it with binoculars or a telescope. she's going to be looking tonight. we have a look from mount vaca. and our kpix 5hi-def doppler is. we have mostly clear skies. that's a relief. a little haze in the atmosphere. not a big deal. livermore, 48, and san francisco is 51, and santa rosa is 50 degrees. a chilly night through the bay area. not too bad, and at least we got away with relatively clear skies tonight and really relatively -- it could be a heck of a lot

colder than it will be tonight. it will be in the 40s for most locations. but look at all those lows, one right on top of san francisco now, another one spinning south of a high that's in the gulf of alaska. you see that big blob of moisture underneath a low? that is headed our direction this week. from time to time, we could pick up showers. it will be cold as well, not other-worldly cold, but cold enough so the bay area peaks might get a dusting of snow, especially by tuesday night. so we'll see. going to be a very chilly weekend, wet from time to time. future cast does show tonight it will be clear. a few little clouds bloom by sunrise tomorrow, mostly in the south bay. we'll get up to a partly sunny start for 2017. the day goes on, look at those little pop-up showers in the north baby late afternoon. a few sprinkles coming into lake, snow ma, and napa county by tomorrow evening. that begins it unsettled weather. so a cold start to 2017, patchy low clouds tonight, and we will get some showers developing late tomorrow evening around the north bay.

and then for everybody else, monday through wednesday, it will be chilly. the 9ers are taking on the sea hawks tomorrow, game time 1:25:00 p.m., and it will be on the chilly side. . 33 degrees santa row is a, and 41 degrees in santa fe. day-time highs tomorrow, we're all going to be in the mid-50s. so that easily sums it up. in the extended forecast, here's what happens. a few showers work their way to the north by late tomorrow. monday, tuesday, wednesday, each day looks a little wet. we'll get a little break thursday and friday, and then that moisture undercuts the low in alaska, and we could have a wet weekend next weekend. stay tuned on that in the meantime, happy new year if i don't see you later. i do know i'll see andrea. >> i will be here. coming up in sports, we check with veteran glenn as he previews it raiders' last
