overnight lows tonight, not bad tonight. it's going to get worse as we head into monday, tuesday, wednesday; but overnight tonight, santa rosa down to 33. and santa fe, 41 degrees. specifically at 81, we'll have a few clouds around. 49 on the embarcadaro. at midnight, it will be 45 degrees. look at that low on top of san francisco and the low behind it. promises unsettled weather in the first week of 2017. we'll have all the details when we cover the forecast in just a few minutes. the cold weather has bay area homeless shelters packed. this one in santa clara county expected -- completely next week. county officials are adding a hundred more beds to the -- center, increasing its total capacity to 350. homeless experts tell us more beds means less space. >> we're crowded. we're stretched. when you add the hundred people on top of that, it's very difficult. we need additional donations as

new owner wants to completely renovate the building. >> now the building permits and everything is ready to go. so we have to go. >> it's sad, because it's one of those places we found that reminds us -- we were from michigan. kind of reminds us of the little diners we had back there. >> reporter: danielle uhaas is from sunnyvale, stopping here before celebrating move has become a tradition for them. >> the decor and diner atmosphere is phenomenon. the food is great. the milkshakes are great. the kids like to eat here. though they're very busy, we almost always can walk in and get counter service. so it's been a great place to come. >> kind of is a little bit of an olden style. like, i -- experience some of the 1900s, in that kind of area. it's kind of a little bit old, has a family feeling. >> reporter: you can still satisfy your cravings at lori diner's other two locations, like the one here

if you're rescuing a pet in a hot or cold car as long as you call the cops first. . and remember the stanford swim convicted of sexual assault who served half of his six-month jail sentence. because of the outrage, prison time is now mandatory for anyone convicted of assaulting an unconscious or intoxicated victim. those are just some of the new legal cause that take effect for all of us californians in 2017. marina dina, kpix 5. tonight california gun enthusiasts have just a few hours left to buy a semi automatic rifle before they're reclassified as illegal assault weapons. it's part of a new arsenal of new gun laws taking effect in 2017. others include new requirements for storing guns and reporting gun thefts, and a ban on the so-called bullet button for quickly removing magazines. advocates say the new legal

cause do more to curb their rights than prevent crime. >> make it more difficult for me to reload my gun when i'm out shooting isn't going to help you when you're mugged in an ally way. >> reporter: the justice department said sales of semi automatic rifle else have more than doubled from last year, from more than 150,000 to more than 365,000 as people try to beat the clock. well artists are joining forces with the san francisco firearm to make their work and living spaces safer. a safety workshop is being offered tuesday in response to the oakland warehouse fire. artists will get a safety presentation along with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. organizers say that ghost ship fire was a tragic wake-up call to pay a lot of attention to things they might not think about. >> this event is really to get artists to think about and remember that safety is important. i probably have things around that i haven't taken care of properly, things that are flammable. it's just a really important thing to have in

been missing since christmas. the monterey county sheriff's office had crews out this

morning in looking for olivia fernandez. searchers are looking for an l.a. couple that's been missing since christmas. the sheriff's office had crews out this morning looking for olivia gonzales and brian fernandez. they left their home in north hollywood on the 23rd for a trip to the coast. they were supposed to return on christmas day, but there's been no sign of them. >> i knew, when my sister wasn't home sunday night, something didn't sit right with me. >> the couple used a credit card in this store, but so far that's the only trace of them. they were traveling in a tan 2002 honda civic. the sky cabin at knotsbury farm got stuck more than a hundred feet in the air. at least 20 passengers were left hanging for seven hours, including a few children. crews had to use a rope and harness system to lower each passenger down one by one.

showed up drunk, and caused a crash that nearly killed them. >> the next thing i know the car was flipping. >> i thought i was going to die. i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: a hovering crash -- terry cortinez during a lyft ride in december. they called the ride so they could have a couple drinks and watch football. instead police arrested their lyft driver for being under the influence. he's accused of making an illegal left turn through oncoming traffic and causing the severe crash. >> you can't believe, at 10:00 in the morning, you know a lyft driver is going to be taking you out drunk. >> it was shocking, to say the least. >> reporter: they both went to the hospital with bruises, cuts, and soreness. lisa says she even suffered a heart attack from the stress. they're now working with an attorney and filed a lawsuit this week against the driver and company lyft. >> what should they be doing? more regular checks, dmv checks. >> reporter: lyft sent this statement: "safety is our top priority, and we were

saddened to hear about this incident. we have a zero strict tolerance drug and alcohol policy for drivers and any behavior threatening the well being of a member is not tolerated." . >> i will never get into a ride- sharing vehicle and feel comfortable ever again. i'm very comfortable driving. >> reporter: she's now questioning all ride sharing company's practices. >> applied on the application, gave them my information, and i was approved within 24 hours. i'm not sure that's adequate to actually check my background. >> reporter: they both say they'll never be the same. >> it was just such a dramatic event. >> reporter: near los angeles, erica naplin, kpix 5. the five-year-old died in a crash by a driver who was allegedly using a face time app behind the wheel in a lawsuit, the parents accused apple of not

kp irsx 5. happy new year. >> same to you, mr. lynn. as we have a look at the embarcadaro. there's the -- building, over which the firew will be amply visible tonight. people are going to be streaming in tonight for the firew. it's going to be an awfully beautiful show, which we will be monitoring for you in the coming hours. here's how it looks. the rather overexposed shot of the bay area, with the numbers beginning to plunge down to the upper 40s around the bay area. 49 in san francisco now. in oakland, it's 50 degrees, livermore 43, and san francisco 49. san jose 50 degrees. we've got clear skies for much of the north bay. right now in san jose, mostly cloudy. lows over the top of the bay area. high pressure is building in the gulf of alaska. that's not unheard of, by any means, but a pattern like this could set up to provide a good deal of

moisture next week see that big plume of clouds that are understood beneath the low? eventually that works its way closest to the california shoreline, and by monday, tuesday, wednesday, it looks like we're beginning have rain in the bay area. not unrelenting rain. it's going to be cold enough -- we'll have showers from time to time. but it's kind of developing. but the cold, cold, cold weather that we were forecasting yesterday is only going to be cold, cold, cold, which means we might get some snow if the bay area peaks by the time all is said and done by the time we wake up wednesday morning. it's a question mark. in the meantime expect sun is the ed weather, the chance for a few showers each day. tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m., we have some clouds in the south bay, sun in the north. watch the top part of your screen. and all of that begins to sink south with some pop-up showers overlake county by tomorrow evening at this time. also a little bit along the peninsula. we can get a little bit wet, just like we got a little wet this morning when we woke up a. cold start to 2017. at least we get away the firew

hundreds of families took part in the "countdown to noon".. at the children's discovery museum in san jose. organizers say: today was a chance for the kids to celebrate their own new year's eve.. at a reasonable hour. the museum provided live entertainment.. party favors.. and confetti for the whole family to enjoy. bell ringing and in san francisco: dozens gathered at the asian art museum in san francisco.. to ring out the old year. the 16th- century bronze bell... that lit dozens gathered tat asian art museum to ring out the old year. literally weighed ton, was strapped 108 times. according to buddhist belief, each of the rings is meant to restrain temptations that torment human kind. >> let's hope it works. >> okay. all right. andrea? . >> news coming out of santa clara today. monday may be colin

workers and their families are among nearly three dozen russian diplomats being expelled from the u.s. as punishment for preelection hacking. a special plane isn't to bring them home arrived at dulles airport this morning. people have been seen loading it up throughout the day, but so far hasn't left. breaking news out of turkey tonight: dozens are confirmed dead in what is being described as a terror attack on a crowded nightclub in istanbul. >> party years were celebrating move when a man dressed in a santa costume walked in and opened fire. at least 35 people were killed, 40 others wounded. many jumped into the nearby bus for -- to escape the siege. there are reports that a police officer is among the dead. >> local media are reporting that the shooter may still be inside the club. police have the entire area cordoned off while they try to secure the scene. at this point, there's no word on who may have carried out the attack or why. we'll continue to follow this story through the evening, and we'll bring you the very latest tonight

if you happen to be looking out a telescope on mount hamilton, maybe. it is appearing at the very, very, very, very faint object in the western sky, a little to the left of the crescent moon. it's appearing right about now. you don't have a chance of seeing it unless you have binoculars or better yet, a telescope. nevertheless it's a good home exercise for the children in a family with a telescope and even the grown ups. so give it a shot. it will be out there a couple nights. live over the city of san francisco now, we've got the bay bridge and the numbers in concord, 47 degrees, oakland 50, and san francisco 49. here's what's happening. look at those double-barreled lows, one right over northern california. the other one is spinning up and picking it up pineapple egg press south of the hawaii indian islands. look at that long fetch of moisture that will work its way to the california coastline. in fact, as early as 24 hours from now, it will pick

up isolated showers in the north bay and along the peninsula coast line. it's going to be an interesting week ahead. it's going be cold enough so we can at least entertain the possibility of a light dusting of snow on bay area peaks. on futurecast, watch the top of your screen. this is tonight, tomorrow morning. as the day wears on, those isolated showers begin to pop up over the north bay and the peninsula. so we could get a little tiny bit wet tomorrow evening. and that was just set the stage. monday, tuesday, wednesday, more showers. a cold start to 2017. you can find the cold moisture and snow level around 3,000 feet. and you know, the bay area -- going to be wearing a plant the of snow. for firew, we'll get away with a pretty good show tonight. we'll be a little chilly. 9ers are taking on the sea hawks down at levi stadium. game high temp, 52 degrees under mostly cloudy skies at 1:25 in the afternoon. overnight lows tonight, well not as bad as they have
