57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. turkish police are looking for a gunman who opened fire at a packed istanbul nightclub. at least 39 people were killed and another 70 wounded early sunday morning. one of the wounded is an american, but most are foreigners. riley carlson has more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. that new year's eve nightclub was jam packed with people. now, nearly two-thirds of the people who were killed in the attack were actually foreigners who spent the night in istanbul to ring in the new year. jake raak of pennsylvania was shot once. the bullet ricocheted off his cell phone and struck his leg. >> i told one person, they're shooting, i'm hiding. >> chris raaks his older

brother will come home soon >> it's really sad with the rest of the world and what's going on with the things. we just pray for their families. >> the family says raak played dead in hopes he would survive. as victims recover, a manhunt as police search for the killer. surveillance video shows people running for cover as bullets ricochet outside the club. then the gunman enters and another camera records the chaos inside. >> i saw a mob coming outside and people were falling down because of the shooting inside. >> club reina is a swanky nightclub popular with local residents and tourists. about 600 people were inside when the gunman opened fire on new year's day. the club's manager said it had increased security after u.s. intelligence warned of an attack less than two weeks ago. outside next to police barricades red carnations are laid out to remember the victims. terrorist groups have carried out devastating attacks in

turkey over the past year including a double bombing at a soccer stadium just last month that killed 44 people. anne-marie? >> rylee, before we let you go, i'm wondering, do we know anything more about the person who carried out this attack? >> we don't know much more, anne-marie, particularly because he's on the loose and the manhunt is still ongoing. now there is obviously the investigation into which group this man might be a part of, which terror group might have had any hand in helping him carry out this attack and help him get away. the turkish media is reporting, remember, he went into the club in that santa claus outfit yesterday, but now they're reporting he changed clothes, which may have helped him slip away from authorities. >> rylee carlson. thank you so much. the turkish prime minister visited the hospital where some of the wounded were taken. one victim said the attack happened very fast, they heard gunfire and got on the floor right away.

president-elect donald trump is back in new york city after spending the holiday at his florida resort. speaking to reporters saturday night, mr. trump expressed skepticism about computers and reports of russian hacking and as kris van cleave reports, he has inside information he'll share this week. >> reporter: a plane carrying russian diplomats expelled by washington took off from dulles airport early sunday morning. donald trump talked about russians interfering with cyber attacks. >> i want them to be sure because it's pretty serious and hacking can be hard to detect. it could be somebody else. >> reporter: trump alluding he had insider information about the hacking. >> i know things others don't know. you'll find out on tuesday or wednesday. >> if he's going to have any credibility as president he needs to stop talking this way.

>> reporter: adam smif schiff is the ranking delegate on the intelligence committee. >> none of us have any questions about this. the only one who does, apparently, is donald trump. >> reporter: this comes as burlington electric announced malware linked to russian hackers was found on one of its computers. still trump promised improving relations. >> hopefully we're going have many relationships with countries. and that includes russia and it includes china. >> reporter: kris van cleave, washington. the technology at the white house is getting an upgrade. president obama ordered the modernization including new computers and faster internet. that may not win over the president-elect though. mr. trump says no computers are safe and if you have anything important, write it out and send it by courier. mr. trump tweets, but he doesn't write e-mail or surf the internet. coming up we'll talk to mark

leibovich about trump's doubts and russian hacking and what we can expect from the new congress, which gets sworn in tomorrow. north korean leader kim jongion says testing for the intercontinental ballistics missile has reached the file stage. in his annual new year's address, kim threatened to boost his capabilities. launching a ballistics missile would be a big step. the new year in chicago got off to a bloody start. two fatal shootings at a bar in the early hours of new year's day continuing a trend that dramatically escalated last year. last year was one of the most violent in chicago history. 762 homicides, more than new york and lamb combined. that's compared to 485 in 2015, the largest spike in 15 years. chicago's police superintendent say criminals have little fear from the criminal justice

system. >> we have to send a message to these individuals to not pick up a gun in the city of chicago. if you do pick up a gun and you use it, you'll be held accountable, and right now we don't do that. >> overall there were 1,100 more shooting incidents last year in chicago than in 2015. federal aviation officials are investigating the collision of two small planes over texas. three people were killed. the planes collided over mckinney near a small airport about 30 miles north of dallas. witnesses say one plane hit the tail of the other. one plane came down on a storage facility, the other on a busy road, and it's reported that two of the victims were a father and son, tim and greg barber. well, coming up on the "morning news" now, stadium standoff. protesters dangle above thousands of viking fans. and mariah carey's times square meltdown. >> well, happy new year.
