what they said moments before the takedown. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, the just sworn-in senate is expected to take the first vote toward repealing the affordable care act next week. replacing obamacare is a top republican priority. today president obama and vice president-elect pence head to the hill. henna daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. gop leaders hope to approve legislation in the next few weeks or months, dismantling much of the law, but it could take years to replace legislation. president obama will meet with the house and democrats. >> the president's motivation is

rooted in looking out for the interests of the 22 million americans whose health care would be taken away. >> vice president-elect mike pence will also head to capitol hill. it's one of president-elect donald trump's main campaign promises. >> i'm asking for your vote so we can repeal. >> it's also a high priority among the newly sworn in and republican controlled congress. >> the first job the new congress will have is to repeat obamacare. we can't do better than obamacare, we might as well look for another line of work. >> while democrats try to save the law. >> it is not acceptable to repeal the law, throw our health care system into chaos, and then leave the hardwork for another day. >> and yesterday house republicans voted to weaken the office of congressional ethics

era to hold his first news conference. this friday mr. trump will be briefed by officials. trump has continually voiced his skepticism concerning russian hacking. a u.s. intelligence official says that's not the case. and mr. trump kept his focus on the auto industry, targeting general motors as ford canceled plans to build a factory in mexico. last month trump took on ford for its plans to move its production of its focus to mexico. ford is still heading to mexico, but instead of building a new plant there, it will create a michigan plant creating 700 jobs. and yesterday in a tweet trump threatened gm for importing cars from the u.s. to mexico. bill and hillary clinton will attend the inauguration of mr. trump.

>> reporter: police have still not released the gunman's name. what they do know is he arrive at the club by taxi striking at 1:15 in the morn. he killed a police officer at the entrance and barely missed owner. i was thinking of jumping on him but he seemed so professional and flexible. inside he moved methodically and ammunition clips. in his wake, 39 dead, nearly 70 injured. many of them tourists. police say he left the club in another taxi heading to an apartment near the airport only to walk casually away. police er r i er isearched the and found nothing. this allows them to release crucial photos of the suspects while giving them deniability if

they don't catch him. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, istanbul, turkey. we have some disturbing video, a police officer slamming a high school student to the ground. the eight-second video shows the officer throwing the female high school student down tuesday and then pulling her up. police say the officer was responding to a fight. the mother of the student who was thrown to the floor says her daug being charged with assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct, and other related charges. craig boswell has the story. >> reporter: cell phone video captured a female police officer repeatedly hitting a 16-year-old

girl in west philadelphia monday. the girl says she has a concussion and bruises. >> i feel like it's really wrong. i'm still a minor and she's a cop. the way she approached me, that's not the way she should have did it. >> reporter: in the video it shows the girl putting her hands on the officer many times. the city's police chief say they responded to someone with a weapon and a fight. police say jonet refused to follow instructions and struck her many times, breaking her glasses and bruising her. the video doesn't show that happening. >> you cannot see that on the video where tshe struck the officer. that's not on the video. >> i'm getting a lawyer and i'm suing her. >> reporter: craig boswell, cbs news. the pentagon is backing down and tell 15g,000 california

national guard soldiers they do not have to repay the military for enlistment bonuses they received. many of the soldiers who served in iraq or afghanistan were told to repay the bonus of $15,000 or more after they completed their military service. the "los angeles times" reports many of the repayment demands resulted in lost records or administrative mistakes. about 1,000 soldiers still have to repay the money though. the penalty phase of dylann roof continues. he faces the death penalty and he's representing himself. he says he will not call witnesses or present any evidence. an in-air scare for passengers aboard a southwest airlines jet headed to orlando. flight 3556 flew through a storm after leaving san antonio monday night and lost cabin pressure. oxygen masks dropped down and

more than a century after the titanic sank in the the titanic sank in the north atlantic, there are new clues to the cause of the disaster. researchers say it wasn't just ice but fire. mark phillips reports. >> she was the largest ship ever built. >> reporter: the documentary gives a new twist to an old story. >> and yet her maiden voyage would be her last. >> reporter: everybody knows why the titanic went down. she hit an iceberg and despite being supposedly designed as unsinkable, she sank and took 1,500 lives with her. but that, the filmmaker says, isn't the whole story. the whole story involves a fire that had been smouldering for

days in one of the vessel's coal storage bunkers, a fire whose heat may have severely weakened the ship and hastened its sinking. the new includes come from old photos of the ship's launching. he had been working on the fire theory for years. he said the dark patch on the titanic's hull says the coal was burning even as the ship was being launched. >> the intensity of the fire not only weakened the forward bulkhead, but may have caused the deformity and the ship put to sea with an out-of-control fire and require 12 men to tackle it during the maiden voyage. >> reporter: the smouldering fuel was dug out and burned in the ship's boiler. but maloney said the need to get rid of that burning coal quickly may have been one of the reasons
