sonny. live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. >> a powerful winter storm blasting the bay area. a day of high wind taking down trees. water rescues and now rising rivers. good evening. we are on storm watch this evening and we have a full staff of reporters tracking the conditions across the bay area and the high sierra. our weather steam is standing by. kpix 5's chief meteorologist paul deanno on conditions right now. paul? >> the rain is not finished yet. pockets of rainfall. right to it. kpix 5 doppler showing heavy rain moving through. american canyon soon to be vallejo, napa, fairfield, showers over the east bay

hills, martinez, antioch and concord. very soggy in the valley. especially towards morgan hill and the mountains continues to get pounded. a new flash flood warning for the creek and the southern santa clara county till 7:30 p.m. otherwise the flash flood watch continues till 11:00 p.m. tonight with flood warnings around northern and central california. how much rain fell? half a foot. nearly a foot in the santa cruz mountains. and mountain tam, 4 inches of rain. cities now, 4 inches for napa. downtown, san francisco, coming up on 2 inches. oakland and danville an inch and a half and pittsburg with .90. the wind, strongest in years. >> reporter: in the bay area and on top of the sierra

nevada, windigos, jet stream speed. 173 miles per hour. kirkwood 100 miles per hour. gusts at the pass 87 miles per hour. in the bay area, gusts in the hills 78 miles per hour. strong wind gusts. sausalito 60 miles per hour. and same for san bruno. sfo, gusts at this hour 45 miles per hour. as for what happens next, paul will do that in the forecast. winds brought tree asks down and rain as well. rain comes down, rivers goes up and as a result we have river problems. kenny has the latest. >> reporter: thank you for that. right now flood warnings along the napa river. kpix 5's susie stein is live where the river is covering roads and starting to cover field. >> reporter: that's right. we are here at a vineyard along

deer park road. this is how it looks in napa county at this point. the only water rescue of the day took place down the road from where we are standing. good news, everyone is okay. the napa river is threatening to crest in the next couple of hours. this is how most roads that intersect the napa river look right now. the river is starting to jump its banks. swallowing any vineyards in its way. >> under 6 feet of water right now. >> the hardest hit areas are the latter. the cross streets connecting highway 29 and the trail. the two arteries run purpen dickialer to each other and the napa river. what worries crews is the speed of the water as it rises. . >> 5 inches in 24 hours. that is a lot of water . >> reporter: other than road closures this storm has yet to

become an emergency situation. he says the flooding could be considered standard before the drought. >> this is typical for road crews. used to dealing with it. we got complaisant over the last 7 years. >> reporter: he wants drivers to remember not to take risks with standing water. >> turn around, don't drown. that is very important -- >> reporter: the good news at this point is there have been no injuries and no home evacuations in napa county. at 6:00 p.m. how this water is impacting the wine crop here in napa county . kpix 5. >> you imagine the russian river also rising quite rapidly tonight. expected to reach flood stage at 10:00 p.m. tonight. it is expected to crest at 38 feet tomorrow afternoon. and that is 6 feet above flood stage. next few hours are criteral for people in the santa cruz mountains. kpix 5's len ramirez -- critical for people in the

santa cruz mountains. kpix 5's len ramirez has an eye on the river. >> reporter: in felton grove, a community along the san luenso. i am in -- san lorenzo. i am in someone's backyard. the area is beyond the trees. the trees are 3 to 4 feet under water. the water may be going down. 3:30 p.m. this afternoon we put this stake in the water. earlier it was here. gone down 3 feet. that is good news. i have been covering this area long enough to know it could go up and it could go down as long as there are flood warnings in effect and that is what is happening here in the felton grove area. what it looks like higher up the mountain. this is boulder creek. the san lorenzo is a raging

river. topping a small dam and a spill way. people coming out to check on the status of the river. the river dislodged a lot of logs. the tree trunks and debris could lead to jams causing a surge to go down street. we talked to one owner who thinks it is just a matter of time before there is flooding. >> due to the fact of how much rain we got and look at where it is at, it is going to flood tonight. maybe hit it time to the laundromat. 3 feet deep. last year i lost my car. down the street. yeah. took it out too late. stuff like that. we are prepared this time. >> reporter: we have been watching the river closely all afternoon. felton grove just one of several locations in danger of flooding. the other one is down stream from here at paradise park, closer to santa cruz and we

heard the creek in santa cruz county, southern santa cruz county, is flooding. couple streets there, state street and college avenue under water at this point. reporting live in santa cruz county, len ramirez, kpix 5. >> here is a look from sierra nevada from tahoe. trees are blowing. kpix 5's emily turner is live at the truckee river where flooding is a major concern. emily? >> reporter: yeah. we got here at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. we have been able to watch the river climb higher and higher. right now from where we sit you can see it is at 5 and a half feet. higher than it normally is. more rain, more flooding. it is worse than he has seen

it. >> bagging sand. we are on a mountain. we are not supposed to leak but we are. we have a flood. >> reporter: poured all day long. all over the lake tahoe basin. folks in truckee raced to fill up their sand bags, if they could get them. >> gone through 15 truck loads. each is carrying 6-tons of sand. the issue is that our whole area seems to be running low and close to out of sand bags. >> the wind blew along side the rain. kicked up white caps along lake tahoe and triggered avalanches. closing 89 to traffic heading both directions. the warmer temperatures and falling rain melted snow and sent run off into homes. >> starting to get calls about flooding in homes. we have seen 2 feet in some residents going into the homes

nemselves. >> reporter: fluting -- themselves. >> reporter: flooding shut down the highway and the river raged. carrying debris with it. the truckee river has been well behaved. but there is still a long night ahead. >> our river levels are not looking that high but we are preparing for the worse right now. >> reporter: back ought here live. you can see how fast the river is rushing right now. add to this another foot of water. truckee river will crest at 7:00 p.m. tonight at 7.3 feet, the highest level since 1997. you can count on us to be here watching it and bring that to you live. reporting live, emily turner, kpix 5. strong winds in san francisco caused problems across the city including a dangerous situation with

scalding. kpix 5's juliette goodrich is live at the scene. >> reporter: market street shut down. police closing off the section. it has a lot to do with the wind we have been dealing with throughout san francisco. firefighters are keeping a watch on scaffolding that broke off the building. some danding and the concern is it will fall on to cars and pedestrians and that is why market at 7th street is closed to traffic. it is one example of what the rain and wind has done throughout the city. >> reporter: wood beams and sheeting couldn't bear the power of the storm. the scaffolding came crashing down this afternoon. and firefighters closed down part of market street as a safety precaution. and in laurel heights this tree came down on top of his car.

>> heard a large crack. >> reporter: that loud crack, a tree branch that came crashing down. >> ran out and sure enough, you know, my car. >> reporter: santa clara avenue a similar situation. fortunately no one was injured. the big question now, will other parts of the tree come crashing down? if you take a closer look, you can see how soft and saturated it is already. from all the rain water. residents say they are meeting in the morning to check the trees along the street. and at jackson a tree uprooted and came out of the ground topplingen to a car. the city has been dealing with hundreds of trees down. flooding in neighborhood that don't typically experience flooding related problems like this and drivers on the golden gate bridge and other parts of the bay area are realizing it is a risk to get on to the roads during the peak of the

storm. in downtown san francisco the rain is not so significant right now. it's the wind that is causing problems. power outages i made a phone call to pg&e, they have scattered power outages throughout the city but not a lot. and 911 calls, it has been steady. theyhave not been over loaded. juliette goodrich, kpix 5. >> in the north bay, the rising water and a morning rescue. >> plus incredible new video from yosemite showing the gorgeous water falls that are now flowing with dangerous force.

rescued from their mobile home. people called 911 and crews were waist deep in water getting them out. one man is lucky to be alive after a tree came down on top of him near beach in stran this morning. firefighters tell us -- in san francisco this morning. firefighters tell us a gardener heard the guy screaming for help. they cut away the branches and were able to free the man. the road were soaked when a taxi plunged into the water near the oakland airport today. the driver did not make it. kpix 5's jessica flores is live with how it happened. >> reporter: near the oakland airport where this happened and the road are wet and slick like when they were at 8:00 a.m. and the fire department said the cab veered off the road. >> reporter: the taxi crab sunk 4 feet down into the water and as crus tried to rescue the

driver witnesses watched from the shore. >> half out. tide was taking it. >> reporter: when crows put the car out you could see the walter pouring from the cab. they located the driver. crews rushed him to the hospital. oakland police department says he didn't make it. at the airport taxi cab staging area the news of the cab driver's death spread quickly. >> weather condition was pretty bad and dark and rainy. >> reporter: oakland police department haven't released the driver's name but he is a 57- year-old. >> good guy. nice driver. he work hard. family guy. >> reporter: it is unclear if weather was a factor in the crash. police are investigating. jessica flores kpix 5. hundreds of people had to be evacuated from yosemite ahead of the storm. brian hackney is here with conditions at the park right now. >> reporter: you can see water

slick roads caused this silver car to part of highway 17 back open after a crash this afternoon. slick roads caused caused the car to swerve into a barrier. totaled the front of the car. good samaritans helped the driver. nobody was seriously injured. trees came crashing down in fairfax today. this one on scenic road. toppledden to a garage. pg&e had to clear power lines before cleaning tup. another tree collapsed on top of a car. no one was hurt. 33,000 pg&e customers are
