clean up starts after a powerful storm swept through the bay area... now at noon, from mud slides -- a power storm swept through the bay area. a break from the rain as we look live outside. but we're tracking another round that's approaching the bay area. good afternoon, everyone. it's monday, january 9th. i'm michelle griego is off. kenny is off. we're following breaking news from marine county.

one man is dead after his car went over the embankment and into the creek of the according to officials, they were called out to nevada boulevard. when they arrived, they found a man inside the submerged car. according to chp, the driver was the only person in the car at the time of the crash. now to our storm watch team coverage and mack vich is live where crews are cleaning up -- let's start with jackie ward where some evacuation was in place. jackie. >>reporter: michelle, here's where the rush river stands now. i'm in knee-deep water. the water continues 50 to 60 yards from where i'm standing. that's the beginning of the johnson's beach parking lot. a lot of flooding in this area. and it's going to crest at 35 to 36 feet at 2:00 this afternoon. this is one of the areas

seeing damage. around 5:00 this morning, this tree in forestville came crashing down on top of a car pulling down power lines with it. luckily the woman driving the car walked away unharmed. marry bell had to be closed for a couple of hours while crews worked on removing the tree. the rush rivers -- rush river fire chief max main says people who live in low lining areas were encouraged to evacuate. >> there's buses in forestville waiting to take folks out. i don't think it's going to get to that. these folks are used to this, and if we're going to get in the 40s, i think we would see a lot more folks leaving. >> this -- a creek connects with the rushing river. think say this comes with the ty

of living near the river and as bad as it looks, it's apart of life here. as you can see behind me, fire crews are out here monitoring the area making sure everyone is staying safe and doing what they're supposed to. they're using this as a training opportunity and they're surveying the river bank. i want to mention the imagine operation center in santa rosa is open for anyone who needs it. jackie ward, kpix 5. a famed tourist attract, the historic pioneer cabin tree. a woman sent a photo before it fell. it was in the 1880s to allow tourist to pass through it and allowed cars. crews around the bay area are trying to clear several mud slides after the big weekend storm, and mack vick is live where a slide is blocking a road.

anne. >>reporter: half of highway 1 has been closed for 13 hours as crews tried to sure up the hillside with more rain to come. they're expecting more mud slides to come as well. the rain saturated hill on highway of 1 gave way last night piling dirt and it backed up traffic along the peninsula coast. there's a billion cars in line. i don't know what they're doing, but it's a mess. officers began one way traffic control alternating northbound and southbound traffic in the southbound lane. >> i'll get to school eventually. >> chopper 5 caught this mess. traffic at a standstill this morning after another mud slide shut down niles canyon road between fremont and sanole part of state highway 84. this video shows highway 17

in the santa cruz mountains after another mud slide brought down a -- trapping a news photographer in his totalled van and sending him to hospital. and silver crossing in bill boy was under water. this is video posted to the gilroy's police department's page. cal trans digged into pacifica to get this moved out. >> it's crazy -- >> he's right. there aren't allow of ways around it in pacifica and here in this city they're expecting another inch and a half of rain again now and wednesday according to roberta. expect the possibility of more mud slides to come. anne makovee, kpix 5. >> roberta is tracking --

involving highway patrol officers in san jose. it happened late last night and the suspect in the hospital. devon joins us where it happened on a highway. >>reporter: chp removed the suspect's car and reopened the onramp. a different scene overnight where officers from the chp and the san jose police department was investigating this bazaar shooting. the [indiscernible] 880 remains closed after a chp was involved with a gun battle with the driver of this car. >> there was an incident that tact place on the 880 ramp in the city of santa -- >> they were responding to reports of an accident and thankfully the officer wasn't hurt. it does appear a spotlight on the side of the patrol car was struck by a bullet leaving shattered glass on the roadway. he suspect -- and

on the mercedd river. it's crested 2 and a feet over flood stage. if you want to know what impact that has on the valley, it's this, if you're driving around the video -- if you're driving around the lake, it feels like a lake. i mean, the valley filled up like a saucer in the low meadow areas, but the good news is that as high as the water got, as strong as the river was running, the camp sites were relatively untouched as you can see. the water kind of crept up to the footsteps of yosemite village, but no damage. we're hoping to speak with the hydrologist later. the guys who figure out how this river works and measure all the water that's coming in, as you can see behind us right there at brightleville falls. they were close to their protection. this river topped out about

where they predicted it would. it took later than they thought it might, but as of noon today, the water is dying back now, and in fact, this river could be below flood stage within the next couple of hours. >> thank you, brook. what a [indiscernible] bridal falls. i got caught up in the moment. we're on storm watch. there's light rain, and that's a vigorous cell making its way towards hidden valley lake. we saw a little snow flake as well in the higher elevations, but we have light rainfall falling around boulder, scott valley -- we have more rain coming. it's from another system that's making tracks toward the bay area.

it does show we're going to track it together, but first we want to start off with this. rush river in governorville expected to crest later on this afternoon above flood stage. we do anticipate minor flooding and erosion around the bank of the rush river. let's look toward the bay area and a mostly cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50s. 60 degrees in san jose. winds on the increase 11 around oakland. 12 in san francisco. walnut creek -- backing all the way to martinez, and 10 in santa rosa winds. today, 10 to 20 miles-per-hour. showers will develop later on this evening. a colder storm and wind tomorrow. not too bad, but a little cooler and more rainy days in the forecast. let's get to it. area of low pressure here. it's going into a smaller impulse of atmospheric river. we have shower conditions here. take a look at the evening commute. this is light and a low level moisture.

this is more moderate rain in the far regions of the north bay. take a look at the overnight hours, it's wet. your morning commute will be wet and we have heavier rainfall during the afternoon and into the evening commute. by the time it ends on wednesday, we will have seen let's say generally one to three inches of rain across the bay area. have you to go to the north region for that in the aka area. the already saturated -- none the less, an astronomical -- we have coastal erosion between tomorrow and thursday. high wind watch. here we go again, very windy cos . winds up to 35. gust to 50, 60 miles-per-hour. meanwhile today, temperatures into the 50s and 60s. sunset tonights at 5:09. we're not going to see the sunrise at 7:25. let's walk you through your extended forecast because we have rain tomorrow
