>> is vladimir putin a war criminal. >> if confirmed jeff sessions would be required to pursue justice for women, but his record indicates that he won't. >> and repeal and replace. in an overnight vote the senate took its first step to undo obamacare. good morning from the 57 studio newsroom here at the headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, the director of national intelligence james clapper said he spoke to president-elect donald trump about leaked details from a classified briefing. last night's conversation followed a news conference in which mr. trump blasted the intelligence community, and he also had some harsh words for the press, and he admitted for the first time that russia was behind election year hacking. hena daniels is here in new york. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. a little over a week to inauguration day president-elect trump is keeping up his war of

words with the media indicating that russia has compromising information on him. >> i'm not going -- you are fake news. >> hours after clashing with a cnn reporter in his first post-election news conference, president-elect trump took to twitter writing, quote, a couple of fake news organizations were there, but they know what's going on. he was admitting to unverified reports that marco rubio has compromising information on him first reported by cnn and buzzfeed a few days ago. >> i think it was disgraceful that the intelligence agencies allowed any information to be so false and fake out. >> late yesterday the outgoing director of national intelligence james clapper assured the president-elect by phone the intelligence community was not behind the revelation and called the leaks, quote, extremely corrosive and damaging to our national security. for the first time yesterday

he admitted russia was behind several election-related cyber attacks. >> hacking is bad and it shouldn't be done, but look at the things that were hacked, that hillary clinton got the questions to the debate and didn't report it? that's a horrible thing. >> mr. trump also discussed his business dealings, announcing he will not place them in a blind trust as experts had urged. instead his sons will run it but promised no new international deals. it was called wholly inadequate. man re? >> hena daniels here in new york. thank you so much, hena. well, as we reported during his news conference, mr. trump displayed his usual displeasure with the press. cbs political news director scott pelley said his tactics are different. >> mr. trump is rewriting the relationship with the press. >> he is. you know, all presidents do

this. they try to control the message by controlling the press. donald trump is trying to do it through intimidation to soften up the stories about him, but he's also seeking to delegitimize the press. he's not complaining about a specific story. he's saying there's a battle between himself and the press and that's an attempt to basically take the value away from what the press does. >> let's have a look at something else he said in the news conference today. >> don't be rude. don't be rude. >> can you give us a question? >> don't be rude. i'm not going to give you a question. you are fake news. >> sir, can you. >> go ahead. you know, i've about been hearing more and more about fake news and people who go and say all sorts of things. but i will tell you some of the media outlets that i deal with the fake news more so than anybody. i could name them, but i won't bother. >> so does donald trump need the press the way other presidents have? >> you see, he's trying to convey all news as fake news.

usually president-ele lly pretty twitter. he also has a following that believes t usually presidents in their attempts to control the press fail because they ultimately need the press to get their message out. he has twitter. he also has a following that believes the press is more apt to go out and get mr. trump. but his ratings is at 43%. to speak to the rest of the country, he needs the validation of the press to get his message across from something that's not just his own mouth and that's usually where it breaks down for presidents who try to go after the press. >> well, mr. trump praised news organizations that did not go after him or put out information that could not be verified. early this morning they took procedural steps. the budget passed 51%-48%. a vote on legislation to repeal parts of obamacare could come next month. the house is expected to vote on the measure friday. and mr. trump's nominee for

secretary of state rex tillerson faces more questions on capitol hill today. u.s./russian relations dominated the first day of tillerson's hearing. chip reid reports. >> is vladimir putin a war. >> i would not use that term. he graphically described russian bombing in syria. >> mr. putin has targeted schools and markets and other civilian infrastructure. it's resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians. you are still not prepared to say that vladimir putin and his military have violated the rules on of war and have conducted war crimes in aleppo. >> those are very, very serious charges to make and i would want to have much more information. before reaching a conclusion. >> i find it discouraging your inability to cite that which i think is globally accepted. >> reporter: rubio has not yet decided whether to support tillerson.

if he votes no, that could put tillerson's confirmation at risk with a divided senate. tillerson said the two nations will probably never be friends. >> our value systems are starkly different. >> reporter: tillerson also encountered some rough sailing when republican chairman bob koerk asked about lobbying on sakss on russia after it invaded crim crimea. >> i never lobbied against the sanctions. to my knowledge exxon mow big never lobbied against the sanctions. >> reporter: but corker reminded him of this. >> i think you called me during this time. >> and menendez said he had evidence he was mistaken. >> i have four lobbying reports totally $4 million as required by the lobbying disclosure act that lists exxonmobil's lobbying activities on four specific pieces of legislation authorizing sanctions.

>> reporter: senator menendez also asked tillerson if he and president-elect trump have even talked about russia yet. tillerson said no, to which menendez responded, that's pretty amazing. chip reid, the cbs news, the capit capitol. jeff sessions is expected to easily win the confirmation for attorney general despite being opposed by black lawmakers. yesterday senator cory booker spoke against session's nomination. >> i'm breaking with senator tradition. senator sessions has not demonstrated a commitment to aggressively pursue to congressional mandate of civil rights, equal rights, and justice for all of our citizens. >> in 1986 sessions was rejected for a federal judgeship over accusations of racial impropriety, charges he

vehemently denies. it was a smooth transition for elaine chao. she was press secretary under george w. bush and she's married to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. she supports funds for public transportation in addition to private funding. now to the weather and this morning conditions are beginning to improve on the west coast. there are still weather advisories in nevada and flood warnings in parts of california, but the torrential rain and snow have let up. rescue crews used boats and trucks to evacuate flood victims in northern california. some homes had flood levels 5 feet high. portland, oregon, was slammed by an unexpected foot of snow, and in nevada, some higher elevations got 11 feet over the past week. coming up on the "morning news" now, football moves. the chargers get ready to announce a change of scenery. and caught on video. a drone slams a seattle landmark. this is the "cbs morning news." landmark. this is the "cbs morning news." olay regenerist renews from within... plumping surface cells for a dramatic transformation

♪ there goes a very expensive toy. video just recovered from a drone the moment it crashed into the space needle on new year's eve. it struck the tower at high speed why workers were preparing a fireworks show. police are investigating. this is not the first time. at least three drones have struck the space needle in recent years. the san diego chargers are ready for a big move, and reforms for the baltimore police. those are some of the morning headlines on the newsstand. the toronto sun reports harsh criticism of justin trudeau by actress and activist jane fonda. she said his recent pipeline approval shows people should. be fooled by good-looking liberals. this was during a visit to edmonton.

"the baltimore sun" reports that the city and federal officials have agreed on how to reform the police department. a justice department investigation revealed unconstitutional and biased police policies. a judge must approve the plan before it becomes binding. the "detroit free press" says the lead levels are dropping in the flint water system. federal, city, and state officials announced signs of progress, but said the water crisis is not over. bottled water distribution and the use of faucet filters will continue. and "sports illustrated" says the nfl chargers are ready to bolt. plans for a move to los angeles by next season could be announced today. they've played in san diego since 1961. a lot of disappointed fans out there, i'm sure. still to come, don't miss another fedex delivery. we will show you how the pharmacy chain walgreens will help you with your packages. and the first lady gets laughs on "jimmy fallon."

on wall street, health care stocks were down after president-elect trump said the government needs to overhaul how it deals with pharmaceutical companies, but stocks on the whole finished on a positive note. the dow gained 98 points, the s&p added 6, the nasdaq finished 11 points higher for your a fifth record-high close in a row. volkswagen pleaded guilty to three criminal charges for cheating on emissions tests and destroying evidence. volkswagen will pay $4.3 billion to the u.s. government. that is the largest penalty against any automaker in u.s. history. you'll soon be able to drop off or pick up fedex packages at walgreens pharmacies. the program begins this spring. it will eventually be available at 8,000 walgreens. fedex says its research shows customers rank pharmacies as preferred locations for accessing their ecommerce
