ceremony that left the honoree emotional. >> for the final time as president, i'm pleased to award the highest medal of honor, the presidential medal of freedom. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, fbi director james comey says he will cooperate fully with the fbi pro i probe how he handled the hillary clinton investigation. they blame comey's actions in part for the loss of the presidential elections. jeff pegues has the details. >> reporter: the investigator's probe goes into the heart that policies and procedures were not followed by fbi director james comey. it will also look at whether certain officials should have recused themselves and if nonpublic information was inappropriately given to the

clinton campaign and the media. >> this is going to be an unusual statement in at least a couple of ways. >> reporter: comey broke with fbi protocol when he publicly announced in july that secretary clinton would not face charges. >> we did not find clear evidence that secretary clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws. >> reporter: then 12 days before the election, the director wrote to congress that the he had reopened the investigation after agents discovered e-mails on a laptop used by clinton aide uhua abedin that appeared to be pertinent. then he sent another letter clearing clinton and closing the probe. >> correct. especially in a public forum. >> reporter: at a senate hearing tuesday comey declined to discuss any potential investigations into president-elect donald trump or his society senator angus king. >> the irony of your his associates prompting this

response from maine senator angus king. >> the irony of your making that statement here, i cannot avoid. >> comey says that he will cooperate with the investigation. in a closed door meeting on capitol hill on thursday, he was grilled by some democratic senators who blame the fbi director in part for secretary clinton's loss. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. well, it was james comey who spoke to mr. trump last week about a 35-page report containing unconfirmed allegations that russia had compromising information on the president-elect. during his confirmation hearing yesterday mr. trump's choice to head the cia mike pompeo told senators that russian meddling in the u.s. election was an aggressive action taken by senior russian leaders. mr. trump's pick for defense secretary, retired general james mattis, called russia america's number one threat. and housing secretary nominee ben carson asked whether he could guarantee hud money

would benefit the trump family, said he will manage things in a way that benefit the american people. speaker of the house paul ryan says congress and the trump transition team are trying to come up with a solution for young immigrants brought into this country illegally as children. during a town hall meeting last night ryan told an immigrant who could be deported he hopes her future is here. >> what we have to do is find a way to make sure that you can get right with the law and we've got to do this in a good way so that the rug doesn't get pulled out from under you and your family gets separated. >> president obama awarded hundreds of thousands of immigrants temporary protection from deportation. president-elect trump says he hopes to work something out. the cuban government is praising the decision to end a long-standing u.s. policy that allowed cubans who made it to u.s. soil to stay and become citizens. the so-called wet foot/dry foot policy has been in effect since 1995. the decision follows months of

president obama has designated five president obama has designated five new national monuments. they include two southern sites where violence erupted during the civil rights movement. he also enlarged two forest preserves in oregon and california. mr. obama has protected more historic and natural sites than any other president. there was some russian interference on c-span, and a driver makes a life-saving stop. those are some of the headlines on the "morning news" stand. "the arizona republic" reports that a passing driver came to the rescue of a state trooper who was ambushed at an accident scene. the passer-by fatally shot a man who was fighting the wounded trooper. a woman died in a crash on the interstate west of phoenix. the attacker's motive is unknown. two band members of tower of power were injured by a train.

toyota is recalling another 543,000 vehicles in the u.s. because of defective front passenger airbags. defective takata airbags that can explode in a crash forced a massive worldwide recall. it includes various models of toyota and lexus. earlier this week honda recalled another 172,000 vehicles because of defective takata airbags. fiat is denying charges from the federal government that it cheated on emotions. at issue, software on about and suv. the epa says it lets more pollution than allowed under the clean air act. fiat chrysler says it's done nothing wrong. volkswagen has just admitted to cheating on an emissions test and agreed to pay $4.3 million in fines. amazon plans to hire 100,000
