ends, leaving 239 families forever searching for answers. searching for answers. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning the search for malaysia airlines flight mh-370 was shut down. nearly three years after the boeing 777 mysteriously disappeared over the indian ocean. in a joint statement center by the three countries involved in the search, malaysia, china and australia officials said in part, despite every effort using the best science available, a search has not been able to locate the aircraft. flight 370 vanished on march 8, 2014 en route to kuala lumpur to beijing. there were 239 passengers and crew on board. no remains were found.

and the search area over the 46,000 square miles of the indian ocean. a few random pieces of the aircraft did wash ashore but the plane's disappearance became one of the great aviation mysteries of all time. officials admit they have may have been looking in the wrong area and the vastness of indian ocean is a lot to overcome. >> it is not an easy task. it's very difficult. i've been to that water and going through all of these difficulties i recommend stopping the search. >> officials say the decision to suspend the underwater search has not been taken lightly or without sadness. well, in another indication of the shaky relationship between the u.s. and russia, this morning the russian foreign minister accused the u.s. of spying. sergey lavrov said u.s. diplomats have engaged in espionage trying to recruit senior russian diplomats. in a wide-ranging news conference lavrov also talked about working with the trump

administration to fight international terrorism. lavrov invited the incoming trump administration to attend the upcoming syrian peace talks in kazakhstan. meanwhile, mr. trump's comments on nato and the european union have foreign leaders on edge. the president-elect trump called it obsolete. the german foreign minister said the comments caused astonishment. and secretary of state john kerry said it was inappropriate for mr. trump to interfere in german politics. the president-elect called chancellor merkel's refugee policy a catastrophic mistake. four days before he's sworn in as president of the united states, donald trump's comments are cause dismay in the african-american unit, causing lawmakers to boycott his inauguration. mr. trump met with the son of dr. martin luther king jr. in the midst of a heating feud between mr. trump and civil rights hero john lewis.

hena daniels is here in new york. >> good morning, anne-marie. senate confirmation hearings resume today for more of president-elect donald trump cabinet nominees. this as more than 30 members of congress now say they'll skip trump's inauguration friday amid an ongoing feud between the president-elect and democratic congressman tom moore. >> reporter: just days before the inauguration president-elect donald trump's rift with democratic congressman john lewis is far from resolved. >> why use the word illegitimate to describe our president donald trump. >> reporter: tensions escalated after mr. trump lashed out at the civil rights hero calling his presidency legitimate. prompting many house democrats to boycott friday's event. >> when you look at the fact that nothing has changed since the campaign, you know, i don't think that's something that i need to do in terms of

celebratin celebrating. >> reporter: the president-elect meeting with dr. martin luther king jr.'s son. >> he said he's going to represent america. he said that over and over again. >> reporter: marked the holiday without mentioning mr. trump. >> when you see something that's not right. not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something, to say something, and not be quiet. >> reporter: more of the president-elect's cabinet nominees are setting to grilled on capitol hill today including education secretary pick and billionaire betsy devos and interior secretary nominee ryan zinke who questioned the effect of climate change in 2014. mr. trump's transition said americans can expect a powerful and concise inaugural address. and senate majority leader is expected to confirm many of the picks after he's sworn as the

nation's 46th president. anne-marie. >> thank you. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll have more on world reaction to mr. trump's comments on nato and u.s. relations with russia. and cbs news will have all-day coverage of the president-elect trump's inauguration, this friday, beginning with "cbs this morning." the gunman who opened fire at a crowded beachfront resort in mexico remains on the loose. at least five people including one american were killed. the blue parrott nightclub is located in playa del carmen on mexico's yucatan peninsula. the gunfire sparked a stampede and at least one of the victims was killed in the escape monday morning. >> everybody is running out even the security guards were on the ground. i knew at that point there were shooters. my back had broken and i knew there was nothing i could do. >> a mexico official ruled out terrorism and said the shooting started when a man with a gun was stopped from entering the club. the gunman suspected of killing 39 people during an

attack at an istanbul nightclub confessed to carrying out the shooting. the suspect is from uzbekistan and trained in afghanistan. he was captured late monday and according to the governor, it's clear he carried out the attack on behalf of isis. during the search for the suspect 50 people were detained. and the widow of the orlando nightclub killer will face a judge in california today. noor salman was arrested yesterday by the fbi on an obstruction of justice charge. she moved to the san francisco area after omar mateen killed 49 people at the pulse nightclub last june. sources say florida authorities suspect her of aiding and abetting the attack. turning to the weather now. and a winter weather advisory is posted for parts of the upper midwest this morning. pockets of snow and freezing rain have developed from the central plains to the great lakes. this is part of a storm system

that hit parts of iowa, nebraska and kansas hard with a dangerous thick coating of ice. trees and power lines snapped and roads were too slick to drive on. in texas, folks there are trying to dry out following a torrential downpour that caused widespread flooding. the storm triggered tornadoes from houston to dallas. well, the last man to walk on the moon astronaut gene cernan is being remembered for his passion for space exploration. ♪ i was strolling on the moon one day in the merry, merry month of ♪ ♪ -- december ♪ ♪ may >> well, in december of 1972, cernan was commander of apollo 17. cernan and harrison schmidt spent over three days on the moon's surface. it was cernan's third trip to space. 12 men have walked on the lunar surface. cernan died in a houston hospital following a long illness.

police in suburban chicago are being sued for false arrest and excessive force in a confrontation with a black driver that was caught on video. dean reynolds has the dramatic footage. >> reporter: on october 10th, 2015, a caller to the evanston, illinois, police identified as blake murphy thought she saw someone breaking into a car. >> he was african-american with a black hood. >> reporter: but as a police cruiser rolled into action, murphy began to waver. >> i don't know if i'm like racial profiling. i feel bad. >> reporter: the man at the wheel was lawrence crosby a 25-year-old candidate for a phd in engineering from northwestern university. and the car was his.

the dash cam in crosby's car picked up his cell phone conversation as he watched the police approach. >> they think i'm doing something wrong. now, i'm getting pulled over. >> reporter: when crosby pulled over and surrendered, a police dash cam captured the incident. he was tackled by police officers who roughed him up and ran a check on the car. >> why am i being handcuffed? >> we've got to verify that the car was not stolen. >> reporter: when the check confirmed the car was crosby's, one officer responded this way -- >> you should feel good for that. tim touhy is crosby's attorney. >> this is something that has got to be checked on a computer and all determined between any
