just one of the spots where we expect to see demonstrations today. and people have been demonstrating all morning long. here's a live look once again at the golden gate bridge with thousands of people expected to form a human chain. kpix 5 anne makovec is there live and talked to some of the people who are participating today. anne? >> reporter: they have said this is not a "protest." this is a show of unity. turnoutis disappointing. the event is slated to go on for two more hours. let's take a live look from above chopper 5 capturing some of the people involved in this event. turnout is disappointing. the people are on the bridge. the plan was to form a human chain from golden gate plaza in san francisco to vista point in sausalito the span of the

bridge. people are wearing purple and white hats. they have all signed agreements to not disrupt traffic during this event. but there are other people who were said to be gathering on the other side of the bridge to continue the chain as far as it could go. the organizers say it's a form of artistic expression. it was organized through facebook. a private group has 26,000 members. all expressed interest in showing up today. >> it helped people put you today's history in context and it's given -- it's, um, it's providing hope. >> reporter: we spoke with the chp and golden gate bridge district. they have been working with this group for several weeks. they say they are here to facilitate free speech and to make sure traffic continues to flow. it is at this point.

there might be more people coming in. the parking lot on either side of the bridge are closed. people have to take buses in or public transportation. they do expect more people to show up. they are not going to be able to complete the human chain across the golden gate bridge. anne makovec, kpix 5. [ pause ] >> so we're here on this overcast and cold day and yet just minutes ago, there was a sea of red make america great again hats here on capitol hill. it started raining while the president was taking his oath of office and people here could not bring umbrellas into this cordoned off area. people stood in the rain cheering and clapping at the speech of the new president!

will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: thousands traveled to the capital to watch the transition of power. one man even giving away tickets to make sure others could take part in the experience. >> rather than have them go unused we want to make sure that people that are here for the inauguration will be able to enjoy the festivities. >> reporter: one company who moved from san francisco to pennsylvania was among those who received tickets. despite not voting for mr. trump, it's still an emotional day. >> now that the dust is beginning to settle we have to figure out how to move forward and i think we have to move forth together. >> reporter: mr. trump's former political rival hillary clinton attended the inauguration along with her husband, president clinton. missing were up to 62 members of congress who stayed away in protest. this is the second largest boycott of an inauguration by congress in u.s. history. swearing-in comes amid heightened security with barricades in the area.

31,000 law enforcement officers along with 5,000 national guardsmen are on the ground in the air and patrolling of large demonstrations like this one taking place. protestors were passionate. no evidence they were blocking trump supporters from entering the area to watch the inauguration. >> that all ... >> reporter: now, just minutes ago, we watched a helicopter leave from the other side of the capital carrying former president barack obama off to air force base where he is going to catch a plane to palm springs, california. now, the newly minted president donald trump is going to head back to the white house where he will oversee the inaugural parade before heading out to balls this evening. >> yes. the president has a long day ahead of him. melissa, what's the mood of the crowd? >> reporter: many people in the crowd were saying things and yelling things that were affirmations. they were basically expressing enthusiasm for a man who is

saying what they think or maybe have always thought inside. so there was a lot of excitement and relief!! a lot of the people we saw -- we talked to a number of people who were just here for the spectacle. they thought that this was an historic moment and they wanted to be part of it. they were also, you know, enthusiastic and respectful, as well. >> thank you, melissa. back here in the bay area multiple protests will happen soon in downtown san francisco. just before 11 at the immigration and customs enforcement building. speakers plan to call out trump for what they call hate toward latinos. at 11 a.m. a march to wells fargo bank since trump's secretary of transportation is on the board. and later a protest at the city's goldman sachs headquarters. in oakland, a lot of businesses are boarded up. folks there are preparing for the worst as demonstrations are planned for much of the day. kpix 5's da lin joins us live

from oakland where the harsh weather has affected the turnout. da. >> reporter: big time, yeah. a small group of protestors gathered in oakland this morning. not a lot to worry about right now during the morning hours. the big concern for a lot of businesses out here still at nighttime when things get dark. but the focus this morning was right here the federal building on clay street. the federal building, let's show you some video that we shot earlier this morning. a small group of protestors gathered outside over by the front entrance saying that trump is not their president. they were basically trying to shut down this building as they were saying because this building represents the donald trump administration. we saw a lot of federal police officers oakland police officers even some chp officers monitoring the crowd but as i mentioned, a small crowd and very peaceful.

it affected the number of protestors. 65 people showed up. some wrote their messages on their umbrellas. >> last night we were making signs to come out to the events today and tomorrow. given the weather we thought we would be bringing umbrellas so we painted our umbrellas instead. >> reporter: got a chance to go over to east oakland at bridges academy on 53rd close by international boulevard. you can see the elementary kids walking out of their elementary school as the signs of protest of donald trump administration. the parents told me that the kids are concerned about their parents getting deported and that's why they marched. let's come back live now as you can see pretty much things are wrapped up here at the building. back to you. >> thank you.

small towns and big cities, believed and knocked on doors and made phone calls and talked to your parents who didn't know how to pronounce barack obama. [ laughter ] >> and you got to know each other. you went to communities that maybe you have never thought about visiting. and met people that on the surface seemed completely different than you. didn't look like you or talk like you or watch the same tv programs as you. and yet once you started talking to 'em, it turned out that you had something in common. and it grew and it built and people took notice. and throughout it was infused with a sense of hope. and as i said in 2004 it wasn't

blind optimism that drove you to do all this work, it wasn't fivety or willful ignorance to all the challenges that america faces. it's hope in the face of difficulty and uncertainty. you proved the power of hope. and throughout this process, michelle and i, we just been your front men. and women. we have been face sometimes the voice out front on the tv screen or in front of the microphone but this has never been about us. it halls been about you. and -- it has always been about you. and all the amazing things that happened over these last 10

years are really just a testament to you. in the same way that when we talk about our amazing military and our men and women in uniform, the military is not a thing. it's -- it's a group of committed patriots willing to sacrifice everything on our behalf. it works only because -- [ applause and cheers ] >> -- of the people in it. and as cool as the hardware is and we got cool hardware, as cool as the machines and weapons and satellites are, ultimately it comes down to remarkable people. some of them a lot closer to malia's age than mine or michelle's. the same thing is true for our

strikes, those thunderstorms. certainly concerning for many earlier this morning and we do have the possibility of thunderstorms throughout the day. right now, we are seeing heavy rainfall pushing off to the east. so martinez saw it, now it's over pittsburg, antioch, continuing to push off towards the sacramento valley. we're also seeing heavy rainfall pushing east into the south bay east palo alto, palo alto saw some downpours here not too long ago now mountain view sunnyvale getting heavier rain, alviso. we'll see more rain for you, as well. we'll be tracking the showers throughout the day. we have a couple of flood advisories and flash flood warnings, one right here for southeastern sonoma county was issued this morning. it was supposed to expire at 8:45. we'll talk more about that and another one in santa cruz mountains and what to expect ahead. thank you. well, some people protest today others are celebrating the change of power in washington. >> and one of those celebrations is going on right now in livermore where we're joined by mick moran -- mike moran, rather.
