melissa caen was at the biggest women's march in the country happening a day after president trump took the oath of office. >> reporter: you know, brian, it is hard to impress someone from the bay area with a protest but i will tell you today's march was absolutely massive. the streets were jam-packed with women and some men, all trying to send president trump a message. [screaming] >> reporter: washington, dc, transformed into a sea of pink today as hundreds of thousands of women and men descended on our nation's capital. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: alicia keys one of the celebrities who took the stage. >> we want the best for all americans, no hate, no bigotry, no muslim registry. >> reporter: these women wore pink head scarves to the march five of them sisters, originally from ethiopia. >> we ask for equal rights like every other woman.

just because we're muslim doesn't mean we're dangerous. >> reporter: women and men, grandmothers and granddaughters, sons and husbands, are here to protest the trump administration. this san francisco couple marched with their son. >> i'm so proud of him to come down from new york to be with us. be with our family. our daughter would be right here along with us if she could be. >> reporter: what do you think of donald trump? >> i don't like him. no. >> reporter: why? >> why? because he has built a campaign on lies and hate and he has affected an incredible amount of people. >> reporter: they te that half a million people showed up to march. [screaming] >> reporter: so many people were here in fact that they had to shorten the march route. hillary clinton also tweeted her support. thanks for standing, speaking and marching for our values at women's march. important as ever. i truly believe we're always stronger together. >> melissa, it seems like there were more people at the women's

march than the inauguration ... what was your sense of that? >> reporter: well, according to crowd town estimates about 250,000 people attended the inauguration. and if those numbers are correct, then that could potentially be half the number of people who showed up to protest president trump. now, he is alleging that the media is lying. so far, he has not mad at all media. today he tweeted out, um, now that he, um, i'm sorry, a fantastic day and evening in washington, dc. thank you, fox news and so many other news outlets for great reviews of the speech. and, of course, now that he is president, president trump has been given a brand-new secure cell phone but i think it's clear that twitter is enabled on that phone. back to you, brian. >> all right, melissa caen live in washington. thank you. and here in the bay area, tens of thousands of people are on the streets of san francisco right now. chopper 5 is over civic center plaza many people wearing raincoats trying to stay dry. and this is what civic center

looked like about an hour ago. a sea of protestors and umbrellas. you can see plenty of signs and even a flag that says don't give up the ship. kpix 5's jackie ward is in the massive crowd and jackie, what is it like out there [ pause ] >> reporter: it's a sight as far as the i can see. thousands upon thousands together as one. some say they are here expressing their disdain for president trump while others like single mother and educator nicole boyd tell me they are here for human rights and kindness. >> fight for things that you believe in and you fight in a way that -- that people will follow you in a respectful way. and it's important that you see your mother doing it so that she can feel empowered to do it. >> it makes me feel like happy,

excited, i like the feeling of it. >> when i see all of you i feel a renewed hope for the future. >> reporter: before the march, a group of people met here at grace cathedral a church that's proud of its progressive reputation and place of solace. >> there are a lot of hurting people and i met a few people who have come in who said i didn't want to be part of a march but i needed somewhere where i could experience healing. >> reporter: for some, that healing starts today. >> i just felt this, like, pit in my stomach yesterday that i have never felt. today i still have it. it hasn't gone away, but it's looking at all the support where people come together. in san jose about 25,000 people were around the plaza de cesar chavez this morning and afternoon and this is what it looked like from chopper 5. kpix 5 reporter emily turner was covering it on the ground. >> reporter: they are mothers. >> it's her body she should have the right to choose. >> daughters.

>> discrimination isn't new. >> reporter: the people who love them. >> you're not a woman. >> that's true. but i do love a lot of women including all the ones that showed up here today. >> reporter: they marched by the tens of thousands in san jose carrying signs about women rights to immigration. >> conversation is important. we forgot how to have conversations with each other just because we disagree doesn't mean we can't have an intelligent meaningful conversation. >> reporter: it started at 11 a.m. and went well into the afternoon all of it peaceful and all of it to make a point. >> i'm marching just for rights and equality for everyone. and i just want to make a difference. i can't vote yet but i just want to be able to do something while i can and be here with people that i agree with. >> that was emily turner reporting from that march. now, many marchers took public transit. bart and vta ramped up service. as of this afternoon at least 23,000 more people rode today compared to last saturday. 14,000 additional exits at lake merritt and at the 12th and

19th street stations, 11,000 additional riders. in oakland, police say 84,000 people were at today's demonstrations downtown and around lake merritt. there were no arrests. we caught drummers in the middle of the protest. also in the middle of the action, kpix 5 reporter sharon chin. [screaming] >> reporter: a sea of pink hats and protest signs flowed down oakland streets with messages to president trump. gray douglas came dressed as wonder woman. >> we're not going to let women's rights be trampled but i'm here as wonder woman because i am my sister's keeper and i need to look out for everybody. all my sisters and brothers. [screaming] >> reporter: it's only half a mile from madison park to frank ogawa plaza. but this march went the long way around. 15 miles. better for being seen and heard. some people came a long way to be part of this movement. kelly came from santa cruz to be part of a larger crowd in oakland.

>> it is so unbelievable to me that all of the wonderful work that has been done towards protecting the environment, supporting alternative energy, if we're look to go backwards. >> we're going to fight you every step of the way with every breath we have! [screaming] >> reporter: they say they will do it one step at a time. in oakland, sharon chin, kpix 5. there were marches in many bay area cities including albany, santa rosa and this one in downtown walnut creek. it started this morning in civic park with speakers, music and signs. >> the walnut creek march is a nonpartisan march. it addresses values that are endangered by the trump administration and his nominees. >> reporter: the event was organized by a council of contra costa county and the contra costa county labor council.

>> our other top story, another intense storm will move into the bay area tonight. we are looking at -- there we're looking at ocean beach. now the kpix 5 hi-def doppler showing that light rain is over taking sonoma and marin counties. this up near petaluma and then down around san francisco right now. light rain overspreading the city. more than light rain at this hour. another rain will spread rain over the bay area intensely after midnight tonight. this is the futurecast that shows us what happens in the wee small hours of sunday morning. moderate to heavy and strong winds. a break at sunrise but later in the day more showers intense at times and could be some thundershowers embedded, as well. this has the potential to bring us more moisture than the previous systems. that's why they have flash flood watches posted already for tomorrow, the usual ponding on the roads, localized flooding but because this has more moisture than storm number one an storm number 2, there could be a rapid rise on the streams so we'll stay vigilant

and monitor the russian river, the napa river. winds will be up again. up to about 60 miles an hour in the bay area. we'll have more on the forecast in a few minutes. high winds and surf turned deadly. a paraglider drowned at pacifica around mid-morning today in high surf along esplanade avenue. a fellow paraglider saw the crash into the ocean. then about five bystanders went down to the beach to try to help. the high surf made the rescue difficult forcing them to wait for waves to push the victim ashore. >> for a while, i mean, the surf was so high we couldn't even get to them and then, the waves kind of brought them in. once he was able to get to him, he was all wrapped up in the lines and wings which weighed a ton and we couldn't budge him really. >> eventually he was got on land and it was too late to

life people packed civic center plaza to hear speeches from people like irene, who had an abortion. >> that horrible memory of that time in my life would go away -- i was completely wrong. my abortion caused me depression, anxiety. >> reporter: this mother is sharing her story because she says she wants other women to know an abortion not a quick fix. >> i bought the lie that abortion was a quick fix. it's not. it's a lifetime of consequence. >> reporter: the 13th pro-life group attracted women from all over california and from as far away as wyoming. we found a church group from san lorenzo. >> this is about women's rights. we know we have a choice and the choice starts way before the baby arrives. >> reporter: they said the timing is a coincidence. >> it always happens near the

legalization of roe v. wade. >> reporter: there shouldn't be any conflicts since they breakdown around 1:30 and the women's march started at 3 p.m. asked if they would join the women's march, many say no chance. >> i believe their idea of feminism is wrong. a real feminine woman with not kill a baby. >> reporter: we didn't see any major issues. during the pro-life march some people who were here for the women's march held up signs to voice their opposition. >> i think we got a lot of counter-protestors this year because a lot of people showed up early to the women's march. >> reporter: in san francisco, i'm da lin, kpix 5. there's rain in santa rosa at this hour and rain reported at sfo. the winds are picking up with gusts already up to 31 miles an hour in the bay area. and boy, there's more on the way tonight. wind, waves, snow, you name it. we'll have it after a break. in... ,,

well are you ready? the final in a 1-2-3 punch a series of storms that began moving into the bay area in the mill of last week will finally wrap up tonight and tomorrow. we'll have showers but one of the headlines focuses around where we are here at ocean beach. not only is the rainfall. you can see the drops on the lens. but the surf will be up to a higher place like as much as 40 feet breakers along the shoreline than we have seen in years in the bay area. so high surf warnings a rare animal in the bay area are posted tonight and tomorrow. right now, the numbers are mostly in the mid-50s. but by the shoreline a big fetch from the series of storms moving over the bay area for six days. the hi-def doppler you can see it approaching by 3:00 this afternoon. light rain began to overspread the bay area but most is offshore. santa cruz mountains is the target at the moment.

backup in the north bay we are already having some light rain south of petaluma and on 116 heading over to sonoma. in san francisco, the rain that you saw on the camera at ocean beach is heading over the city and also down into the santa cruz mountains heavier cells where they expect up to 3 to 4 inches of rain by this time tomorrow night. futurecast shows that we have rain between now and midnight. the heavier cells develop after midnight tonight. then it blows through. fast-moving storm. but there's more moisture on the back end of it so sunday looks like a lull but all of these pop-up showers some of them energetic will be spreading rain over the bay area for much of sunday and the potential for thunderstorms is there, too. so here's the timing on this. now through midnight, light to moderate rainfall develops. gusts up to 60 miles an hour in the upper levels. down here in the bay area and some of the east bay hills and along the coast range. from sunday morning to sunday night showers and wind.

flood alerts are posted for the entire bay area with ponding on the roads localized flooding and rapid rises on bay area streams and rivers. high wind alert at 10:00 tonight. winds out of the south to 50 miles an hour sustained and gusts to 60 miles an hour. and it the same old story saturated soil, strong winds, that's a threat to trees and power lines, power outages, are essentially expected. boy, this is rare. high surf warning. 40-foot breakers at the beach. a rip current threat, as well. sneaker wave chances along the entire coast. winter storm warnings are posted out in the mountains for two to four feet at lake level. as much as 6 feet of snow above 7,000 feet. the winds in the sierra could top 70-mile-per-hour all being ushered along the deep low the pacific northwest spreading the moisture over us tonight. here's what we are expecting. light rain developing heavy rain after midnight tonight the winds pick up out of the south as showers continue tomorrow
