[ applause and cheers ] >> let's talk about criminal justice reform. >> yeah! >> let's talk about climate change! >> yeah!! >> reporter: the women we spoke to said president trump's inaugural speech didn't give them hope that things are going to get better. >> more of the same of what i heard during his election run. angry, very pointed. it wasn't about working together and trying to solve problems. >> reporter: they were happy to be among other marchers

especially fellow bay area people. >> came from the bay area to be with here like berkeley people. >> there's a lot of us here we're all over the place. >> reporter: the women told us they were there because they wanted to make a statement and be heard and they wanted to meet each other and to organize so that they could resist president trump's policies. >> it's incredible to think it started essentially online, right, tell us about that? >> reporter: hey, definitely organic, definitely not traditional march. things were a little haphazard at times. a lot of people didn't know where it was going and at one point the route seemed to change. and the speakers went really, really long. it was supposed to start at 1:15. the march. and yet the rally was still going at 3 p.m. so a number of people just started walking on their own but the women we talked to said despite any kind of informational issues they were really excited to be there and to meet each other. >> melissa caen in washington for us tonight. thanks. back here in the bay area,

enormous crowds are sweeping to the streets of san francisco at this hour. chopper 5 was over the scene at the civic center just a short time ago. they had it land because of the incoming storm. but as you can see, people are marching. and now they are on the way to justin herman plaza. our jackie ward is at city hall right now. >> reporter: what an incredible place to be in the middle of today. as you can tell behind me city hall even decked out for the occasion lit up in pink to represent of course this nationwide women's march. city hall plaza, civic center plaza is empty compared to what it was just an hour ago. check out what we were in the middle of. tens of thousands of people came to civic center plaza and didn't let a little rain stop them from being here. they came in droves and some told me they were here to express their frustration with president trump while others were here for lgbtq rights human rights and women's rights. they said the power is in the

people. and coming together today is vital. >> i have always said there are more of us than there are of them. he may have won the election but there's still more of us than there are of "them." we have to walk boldly and strongly into our future and be brave and feel empowered that we have four years of him but we're going to fight for four years. >> reporter: the march is under way now but before it began people stood here for two hours listening to speakers. they were dancing and chanting [chuckling]. larkin street where we are was completely shut down and the entire plaza was filled and overspilling on to nearby streets. it was just incredible to be in the middle of. so that crowd is going to justin herman plaza. this event will last until 8:00 tonight. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> we have been looking at the crowd from chopper 5. it looks enormous to from the air. what's it like on the ground? any estimate on how many people were there? >> reporter: you barely move.

i mean, it was really hard even going just around our news van. that crowd was so thick. but it was always pleasant. it was always very energetic and upbeat. there was never a mob mentality scene. it was actually pretty nice for the size of the crowd [chuckling]. sfpd actually never gives crowd estimates for this kind of event so i can't tell you how many but i have to "imagine" there were tens of thousands of people here. and still, around the city of san francisco tonight. >> absolutely. all right. jackie ward, jackie, thank you. not the only place either. chopper 5 all over the bay area today as 25,000 demonstrators made their way through san jose. and a crowd that oakland police said numbered 84,000 people marched through oakland. others were at lake merritt and we had a team of reporters in the thick of it. >> reporter: in oakland the shoulder to shoulder crowd started forming at 10 a.m.

>> a sea ofdown oakland streets with messages to president trump. pink hats.gray douglas came dressed as wonder woman. >> reporter: it's only half a mile from madison park to frank ogawa plaza. but this march went the long way around. 15 miles. -- stretching for two miles. better for being seen and heard. for some family this represents the first time generations are coming together to fight for a common cause. harvey brought his wife, daughter and granddaughter. >> i'd like to be someone who stands up and says, we don't agree with that when things happen that we don't agree with. >> reporter: nikola adams' grand-uncle marched with king in selma. she is fighting for civil rights. >> we will not allow them to make us lack our children in education. we will not allow them to roll back women's rights. we will not allow them to roll back any more of the voting rights. >> reporter: marchers say they will be watching every step president trump's

administration makes. in oakland, sharon chin, kpix 5. >> reporter: i'm emily turner in san jose where the streets were gridlocked with 25,000 marchers. for this family today's march is less about the steps they take and more about the statement they are making for their daughter ava. >> i'm out here supporting women. they are people and all that. we want to make sure that not all men are like our current president. >> reporter: she may not be old enough to understand and she certainly isn't old enough to vote but one day she will be. and when that day comes, mom and dad want her world to treat her well. >> there's part of the normalization and i want to make sure it's known that this isn't normal. this isn't okay. >> there's power in numbers. we want to show that. >> reporter: those numbers were in the tens of thousands in san jose. they marched from city hall to cesar chavez. they chanted and cheered and held their signs high hoping they will be heard and that that will help make a change. >> i think it's really powerful that all of us are here to show

up for women but to show up for minorities, to show up for people across the economic range of incomes and to really represent [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: emily turner, k pix 5. hillary clinton sent out a message during the march. she tweeted to all little girls watching, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world. well, there's the other big story tonight that is the third in a series of storms moving into the bay area tonight. kpix 5 hi-def doppler is painting the rain now beginning to come in, in advance of a vigorous cold front. this time lapse from noon today shows the first echoes offshore showing up at about midafternoon and now we have light to moderate rainfall over much of the north north bay around petaluma and palo alto and milpitas moderate rain as well. the heavier cells are over the

santa cruz mountains which will get 2 to 4 inches of rain in the next 24 hours on top of everything this week. there are flood alerts posted for the bay area. flash flood watch in effect through sunday beginning at 10 tonight for ponding on the roads, flooding and rapid rises on the local bay area rivers. this one has more moisture than the previously two storms. high wind alerts also posted for winds up to 60 miles an hour. it's not in the sierra. this is in the peaks around the bay area. and 35 to 50-mile-an-hour gusts out of the south for the lowlands. when do we get a break and see sun again will be the subject of the forecast which is coming up in just a few minutes. in the meantime, kpix 5's andria borba is at the lexington reservoir at the foot of the santa cruz mountains where tonight's new rain could cause any problems on top of the troubles we had this week. is it raining? >> reporter: it has been raining in earnest for quite some time. you said moderate rain. it certainly doesn't feel like moderate rain nor does the wind

help that situation. now, the lexington reservoir has been lapping at its banks out here and continues to do so. the reservoir has been at 105% of capacity for quite some time now. the full lake has brought the curious out like matthew mitchell and his children who are here to see exactly how full it was. >> we have lived here since 2009. i have never seen it this high. it's really cool. we ride our bikes up here. usually when you get here we walk down all the way down to the water and it's really high, isn't it, guys? >> yeah. >> reporter: now, also a concern in this weather the saturated ground and hillsides surrounding highway 17 and highway 9 which have been home to numerous fallen trees and mudslides affecting both traffic and homes and in hollister the levee that broke still has not been prepared leaving the possibility for more flooding as this next storm hits. we will be out here all night

off pacifica... around 10:30 this morning... near ue. with the gusty winds' winds a paraglider died near the cliffs along esplanade avenue. five bystanders rushed to the beach to rescue him after he crashed into the ocean. he had to drift in with the flying gear because of the

winds. >> we are just trying to get to him. the surf was too high. the waves brought him in. >> eventually they drag him on to dry land. it was too late. he died. on the subject of surf and rain and wind we'll be tracking the incoming storm throughout the newscast. your forecast in just a minute. meanwhile, going back to our other story in the bay area today, you're looking live at market street in san francisco. this is chopper 5 bringing us these live pictures of the massive women's march. tens of thousands of protestors are there many with umbrellas and signs. they marched from city hall onward to justin herman plaza and our jackie ward is there with the massive crowd and we are going to check in with her a little bit later in the newscast. you can see it wind all the way down market street there. well, that wasn't the only big rally on market street.

kpix 5 reporter da lin was there for a pro-life march. >> reporter: thousands of pro- life people packed civic center plaza to hear speeches from people like irene who had an abortion. >> that horrible memory of that time in my life would go away, i was completely wrong because my abortion caused me depression and anxiety. >> reporter: this mother is sharing her story because she says she wants other women to know an abortion is not a quick fix. >> it's not. it's a lifetime of consequences. >> reporter: the 13th annual pro-life march in san francisco attracted mostly religious groups, people who came with their churches from all over california and from as far away as wyoming. we found a church group from san lorenzo. >> this is about women's rights. we know we have a choice. and the choice starts way before the fetus arrives. >> reporter: organizers say it was a coincidence their event is scheduled right before the women's march against president trump. >> this walk for life always occurred on the saturday closest to january 22nd,

because that was the supreme court decision in 1973 that legalize the abortion. >> reporter: organizers say there shouldn't be any conflicts since they break down around 1:30 and the women's march starts at 3 p.m. asked if they would join the women's march, no way. >> i believe their idea of feminist is wrong. real feminine woman would not kill the babies. >> my body, my choice! >> reporter: no issues during the pro-life march. some people here for the women's march held up pro- abortion signs. >> we got a lot of people here who came early for the women's march. >> reporter: in san francisco, i'm da lin, kpix 5. >> the pro-life march stayed peaceful the entire time and no arrests were made. all right. now let's get on to another big topic forted. that is the weather as we have for the golden gate bridge. the computer just died. um, don't worry. i can fix this. >> there it is. slick streets on the golden gate bridge. there are going to be ponding on the roads. numbers in the low 50s a significant storm winding up offshore the last in a 1-2-3 punch. hi-def doppler shows what happened this afternoon. we had mostly dry weather until sprinkles came in toward midafternoon and evening and tonight, we are going to increase the light rain coverage over much of the bay area. right now reporting light rain from rohnert park to santa rosa into the city and at the airport. san francisco has got rain right now. you can see the rain that's just behind milpitas and the east foothills out there behind san jose. flash flood watch for the entire bay area. this is the urban stuff. this just means you will hit puddles on the roads. tell us something we don't know

but also getting rapid stream rising with the last of the series of systems that's coming in and once again for the third time in a row, this has some of the most powerful winds of the three storms that we have seen with gusts up to 60 miles an hour in the east bay hills on skyline boulevard on mount tam on any of the mountains ringing the bay area. and even down below will be 35 to 50 miles an hour so trees power lines and power outages all a threat tonight. futurecast shows some of the heavier cells like with the last storm coming in after midnight. thunderstorms with that, as well. sunday with showers moving in some of them coming down heavy at times for sunday afternoon. it will begin to blow east by monday night. to sum it up, tonight through midnight, light rain develops, midnight through sun rise. the rain, gusty winds, head south so that's after midnight when the heavier stuff comes in. and then tomorrow, we'll have showers, we'll have wind, we

have a thunderstorm and the surf, oh, that's big, too. here's why. low pressure spinning offshore since all that moisture from hawaii to impact with the california shoreline, it's going to be a big factor for southern california, as well. the sherpa fire area down in santa barbara is just gotten an evacuation warning for mudslides that's a summer fire that crossed the 101. it's a problem again in santa barbara county. for us, i have been doing this since when i was at kgo in 1990. it's so rare to see a high surf warning with 40-foot breakers. i cannot remember 40-foot breakers right at the beach. but that's the threat through tomorrow night. massive breakers offshore. rip currents threats, sneaker waves and that's posted for the entire coast. winter storm warnings as well 2 to 4 feet at lake level three to six feet of snow above 7,000 feet, wind gusts in the sierra to 70 miles an hour. so light rain will develop in the next few hours, heavy rain and wind will develop

overnight. showers continue tomorrow p some heavy at times. a few breaks, some heavy showers and those showers will linger in monday but generally after tomorrow night they will begin to back off. travel weather forecast rain from reading to fresno snow in the mountains in fact rain all the way down to the southland. tonight lows will be in the 40s. sun-up at 7:21 a.m. temperatures tomorrow will be in the 50s. the extended forecast, rain wind spreads south tonight a blustery day tomorrow monday lingering showers. tuesday maybe a sprinkle or two before finally on wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, we get sunshine. which is good news but if you can't wait for your ray of sunshine, here he is. washington" prompted massive ches here in the our top story tonight millions filled the streets today as the women's march on washington prompted massive sister marches here in the bay area. and as you can see, the event in san francisco is massive and still under way. in oakland, the march drew 84,000 people and around 25,000 people rallied around downtown san jose. those huge marches marking president donald trump's first full day in office. >> he didn't seem fazed. he got right to work on this first weekend at the white house. we have team coverage live from washington. our melissa caen spent the day at the women's march but we begin with weijia jang tracking the new president and his first orders of business. weijia. >> reporter: brian, we heard from president trump one time today when he visited the cia. it's viewed as an effort to reestablish what's been, allegedly, a tense relationship. but his remarks at the memorial there turned into a bashing of the media and then his press

secretary reinforced the message. on his first full day in office, president donald trump toured cia headquarters in langley, virginia. the president has often criticized the u.s. intelligence community but praised it on saturday. >> i love you. i respect you. there's nobody i respect more. you're going to do a fantastic job. and we're going to start winning again and you're going to be leading the charge. >> reporter: earlier this month, president trump questioned the intelligence community's conclusion that rushed allegedly hacked the election. >> they made it sound like i had a feud with the intelligence community. i just want to let you know there really -- it is exactly the opposite. >> reporter: the white house press secretary also criticized the media at the first news conference held inside the briefing room. >> there's been a lot of talk in the media about the responsibility to hold donald trump accountable. and i'm here to tell you that it goes two ways!

we're going to hold the press accountable, as well. the american people deserve better. >> reporter: sean spicer lashed out over reports about how many people attended the inauguration. >> photographs of the inaugural proceedings were intentionally framed in a way to minimize the enormous support that it gathered on the national mall! >> reporter: spicer did not answer any questions or offer comments about the hundreds of thousands of people in town for the women's march on washington. most of them to protest president trump. president trump also had phone conversations today with the prime minister of canada and the president of mexico who is scheduled to visit the u.s. at the end of this month. but the first foreign dignitary who will meet with president trump will be the prime minister of the uk set to come here next week. brian? >> weijia, it was easy to see what the tone of the first press briefing [chuckling]

was like. how did the press react?! >> reporter: brian, i think at first, members of the media, the press corps that covered presidents were frankly surprised. this is something that nobody has really experienced before. it was such an aggressive tone. i mean, he was fighting and used fighting words for that matter and did not give any reporters a chance to comment or respond or ask any questions. so it certainly sets a tone for what we expect to come. at the next press briefing he will take questions. all eyes will be on how sean spicer and president trump address the media. >> his enmity of the media seems to continue. live at the white house, weijia jang, thank you. as weijia just mentioned one thing president trump didn't talk about today the women's march on the washington. our melissa caen was there. melissa. >> reporter: yeah. if yesterday as a day for red

hats, today is the day for pink hats. thousands of people turned out in historic numbers to spend a message to president donald trump. they will resist. [screaming] >> reporter: there hasn't been a women's march around an inauguration this big in more than a century when suffragettes demanded the right to vote. >> people today from all across the nation have come out to let our voices be heard. >> i think a lot of us will take this energy back with us to the communities that's for me one of the most key parts of why we decided to invest and come out here and fly out here. >> reporter: our nation's capital was transformed into a sea of pink women men daughters sons grandmas and grandpas. many of them wearing pink hats and carrying signs with slogans like tweet this and we did not come this far to only come this far. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: alicia keys just one of the celebrities who took the stage. >> we want the best for all

americans. no hate. no bigotry. no muslim registry. >> reporter: madonna never one to shy away from being provocative had this to say. >> yes, i have thought an awful lot about blowing up the white house. >> reporter: they requested a permit for 200,000 people. half million showed up to march. [screaming] >> reporter: so many people were here in fact that they had to shorten the march route. hillary clinton also tweeted her support. thanks for standing speaking and marching for our values at women's march important as ever i truly believe we are always stronger together. >> reporter: now, there were some other celebrities there, as well. amy schumer was on hand when madonna made the blowing up the white house comment.

there are pictures of celebrities being tweeted from events around the country. >> also mentioned that there was a sundance festival there's going to be. can you talk about that? >> reporter: that's right. in park city utah there's a film festival going on right now actress kristen stewart, chelsea handler were there to take part in the march. now, of course, this film festival draws hundreds of celebrities and they joined together with other women to protest president donald trump all the while marching in the snow. back to you. >> thank you. melissa and her crew have been sharing their dc stories on snapchat as you can see and so for a behind-the-scenes look at all the events in washington follow us by searching kpixtv. tonight organizers in los angeles estimatethree-quarters of a million people were in the

streets in the southland for a march there today. of course the exact number is impossible to know. the "l.a. times" calls it the biggest demonstration the city has seen in more than a decade. and these are just some of the more than 600 marches held in cities across the country today. in chicago organizers had to cancel the annual march because too many people turned out at the rally. we also saw a massive crowd in atlanta, denver and just about everywhere in between. back here oakland police tell us 84,000 people marched through the streets this afternoon. chopper 5 over the large crowd that stretched along lake merritt all the way to frank ogawa plaza. officers say all of those people were peaceful. they didn't arrest anyone. and peaceful demonstrators also hit the streets today in san jose. chopper 5 over the massive crowd near cesar chavez park. police estimate at least 25,000 people were there. the march began around 10:00 this morning all of the streets are back open tonight.

well, epic crowds in san francisco right now. san francisco police don't ever estimate the size of crowds. but from what we have seen tens of thousands are taking part in the women's march. kpix 5's jackie ward is where it all started at civic center plaza. jackie. >> reporter: hi there, brian. what a day, what a night!! it is incredible to see how many people are out here and were out here in city hall plaza. you can see behind me that city hall is all festive, decked out in cake for the women's march that happened nationwide today! the people we spoke to said they were out here for many different reasons. at one point, when we were in the crowd, you could barely move. the crowd was so thick. pink hats and signs were everywhere you looked. some told me they were here because of the anxiety election season. others were here to inspire their kids and to provide an example of how to be respectful. no matter the reason. people were here and it was amazing.

>> this is the first time i have truly felt like it's everyone come together in spirit in a way that i have never seen before on any other issue or cause, you know, so i think it's powerful. >> reporter: so the march has been under way for an hour and a half now but before it began people stood here for two hours listening to various speakers. they were dancing and chanting. larkin street where we are was at one point completely shut down. and the entire plaza was filled with people over spilling on to nearby streets but now larkin street has since reopened. still, just an incredible thing to be in the middle of cluck chuck today. it is still going on. of course, the march went down market and will end at justin herman plaza. cate caugiran will have a report on how the rest of tonight's festivities have gone and she will be delivering that report at 11:00 tonight. live from city hall, jackie ward, kpix 5. thank you. hundreds braved the rainy weather to take part in a women's march and rally in

walnut creek. the rally started this morning at civic park and included music, speakers and plenty of signs. many expressed concerns about president trump's new administration. >> the walnut creek march is a nonpartisan march. but it addresses values that are directly in danger by the trump administration and his proposed nominees. >> the event was organized in part by the contra costa county interfaith council and the county's labor council. with all the marches going on good luck getting a seat on bart today. this was the scene at oakland as lake merritt station around 10:30 a.m. at last check bart officials say over 167,000 exits from the station so far. that's up from 93,000 last saturday. from lake merritt station alone almost 22,000 people. oracle arena holds just over 19,000 to put that in perspective. riders we spoke with today
