live team coverage of the cleanup underway. it's monday, january 23rd. i'm kenny troy. >> i'm michelle griego. let's get to the coverage with roberta gonzalez. but let's start with jackie moore near alameda creek where the search is on for a missing person. >>reporter: a teenage driver was on her way to visit families on the peninsula. she was driving from tracy. when she never showed up at her family's place, they filed a missing person's report. chp arrived on the scene of an accident and they pieced it together. this rushing water is treacherous enough, but further upstream is even more - it's even more dangerous and too dangerous to put divers? . >> because there's a bridge there and we believe the creek is deeper in that location. >> for now, it's a waiting game with mother nature and the state has to authorize the water to be turned over

at the dell -- the dams are down because of the recent rain so water is not being diverted to the lake, but that will change later. >> we're on the call with department of water resources and -- we're going to discuss the water flows. >> around midnight tonight, they're expecting water levels to naturally reduce. in the meantime, the alameda county sheriff's office is launching its drone to do some 3-d mapping of the area and give search ideas a better idea of what they're working with. this is video from chopper 5 as witnesses and visitors -- crew was the sheriff's department and other local county agencies will probe into the water to see if they can find the vehicle. >> there's a bridge and we're going to probe into the water and see if -- identify areas where water is moving over certain objects and see what those objects are. >> the sheriff's office is hoping when divers do get in the water, they'll find

the car with the teenage driver still inside. so her family may have some closure. what you're looking at right now on top of that river bank is nile canyon road known as highway 84. it is closed right now, but it will be open in time for the evening commute around 4:00 this afternoon, however, chp tells us they'll close in again when they're not in commuting hours, but they'll have to reopen it for the morning commute, so expect this on and off pattern to last possibly through the end of the workweek. in fremont, jackie warren, kpix 5. here's something you don't see often in redwood city. hail. we have this video shot from the backyard -- let's go to roberta gonzalez tracking the storm. >> we're trying to stay warm and dry along the peninsula with the same cell around 8:30 this morning. we had snow or is it hail?

sfo according to richard luis, he sent this photograph and it looks like an accumulation of hail. i checked the dynamics and it was 47 degrees and elevation there 36 feet. we'll qualify it as hail, but boy it looks impressive. we have snow and hail right there in the mountains of the north bay. pretty moderate showers around the sonoma area. east bay getting hammered and snowing at mount de ablo. it has been blowing, it has been on the fly all morning at mount hamilton. plenty of rain showers -- here'e deal. we have a flood watch until 6:00 tonight, which means you'll have ponding on the roadways. you'll have slippery sidewalks. you will have swollen small streams and localized flooding and the possibility of rock and mud slide threat as well. we still have the scattered showers throughout the evening commute with that potential of a thunderstorm containing, brief heavy

downpours continuing hail as well. lightning is a possibility. that will continue through tomorrow morning and michelle coming up, i'll tell you when the sun will return to the bay area. >> we can't wait, roberta. thank you. a live look at ocean beach where powerful waves can be seen along the coast. large swells are expected today and tomorrow as the storm pounds the shoreline. coast guards are reminding beach goers not to venture near or into the water due to rip currents. damage from the storm is scattered all over the bay area. today in lafayette, crews are chopping up a massive tree that flattened a row of cars. anne mack vick is there latest. >>reporter: let me tell you the smell of eucalyptus is in the air and it will be for some time. you can see the damage behind me. the cars that were crushed by this tree, and then one of two trunks that the tree had, that is what remains of that at this point this afternoon. the tree was about 150 feet tall and

it's going to take several days for this to be cleaned up. crews estimate this eucalyptus tree was 350 years old when it came crashing down yesterday into the parking lot of la [indiscernible] restaurant. >> it was a big boom. you knew it wasn't a car crash. >> the sound of bending metal and the breaking glass made smith heard it from a block away. >> my first thought are people trapped or hurt. >> luckily no. but ten cars are underneath this mess with a varying degrees of damage from dents to this jeep which is flattened. its owner was inside the restaurant at the of the crash where that is way 70th birthday party in swing. >> no one was in their car, so everyone was fortunate. >> the street service is trying to clean the brush before bringing in heavy equipment for the rest. >> and see how we're going to get the wood out of here

highway. we know it's expected to remain closed until friday, and you can see this car right there is stranded in the flood waters. rescue workers says it has been stuck there since 5:30 yesterday morning. one was rescued and cal tran says they're waiting for the water to recede before they recover the car. snow is piled up near highway 50. it buried cars and communities like placerville, and more than a foot fell into pollock pine in the last 24 hours and the school district cancelled classed today, but some kids bundled up to help their parents shovel away the fresh powder. stay with kpix 5 as the latest storm moves through the bay area. you can track storms and see high doppler -- turning to politics now. president trump begins his first workweek in the white house with a full slate of meetings. white house press secretary shawn spicer responded to a question about the biggest talker from over the

water main break in quarter madera. you can see the water shooting up 40 feet. marine municipal says that's 3,000 gallons a minute. we learned a car hit a hydrant causing the break. an investigation is underway after a police shooting. it happened -- chopper 5 was over the scene a few hours ago. investigators say a knife welding suspect was attacking a teenager who climbed out onto his back and that's when an officer fired multiple gunshots at the 21-year-old suspect killing him. officers say the victim is 16 years old and from union city. no word on his condition. in a few hours, san francisco's mayor will swear in bill scott as the city's top cop. mayor ed lee introduced scott as the next police chief during a conference last month. scott served as deputy chief of the lapd. he

replaces tony chaplin and chief greg sir who resigned last may. this afternoon, a federal judge in san francisco is expected to sentence pg and e. this comes after a jury convicted the company of violating pipeline safety laws before a blast. the utility says they're prepared to pay the $3 million fine, but they're asking the judge not to adjust the bonus program for employees or -- 8 people were killed and 38 homes were destroyed in the 2010 pipeline blast. tornado tore through georgia leaving fields debris and downed power lines and devastating lives. crews went door to door searching for survivors and the tornado that hit the town of albany smashed in homes and tore down traffic lights and uprooted trees. >> americas mrsa -- oh mercy, it

looked like a water zone. >> a mobile home park was wiped out killing 7 people. survivors says it felt like their whole neighborhood was in a blender. >> more storm devastation in southern california. heavy rain and rushing waters submerged lower part of the state yesterday causing mud slides and turning dry roads into rivers. for many drivers, rising waters turned situations from dangerous to deadly in a matter of minutes. daring rescues were carried out all over the state weekend. both crews and good samaritans risk their lives to save those in the cross heirs of the storm. >> i just just jumped -- i jump in and threw her over my shoulder. >> 15 foot waves in san diego dragged into women into the ocean. it took rescue crews 40 minutes to

locate them and pull the second woman from the water. she died late yesterday. let's get a check at the conditions in the bay area with roberta. >> the recipient of the -- in the northern half part of the state, we have a cold front. the area -- leaving behind a lot of cold and stable air mass. a few rainbows as well. chopper 5 was able to pick up a rainbow earlier today and once the rainbow dissipate, there you have it, isn't it beautiful. wow. okay. we saw the rainbow because of at of the breaks in the clouds, but then when the clouds rolled back in, we had thunderstorm around -- carla picked up hail in half moon bay. look at that. that's a good size amount of hail on the ground there alone the coast this morning. there's scattered showers and pop up showers here. moderate around the

pedaluma area. east bay, you're getting pounded all morning long with -- right now getting blasted near vas coroad as you make it towards brentwood. we've been seeing snow in the mount hamilton area. we have a storm watch warning in effect in the bay area. the ground is saturated and there's a potential of a downed tree at any particular time. this is our live weather camera looking towards golden gate bridge where we have a little break in the clouds, but we have a lot of rain in the forecast. a chill in the air. i like to share the winds with you because the winds up to 11 can take down a eucalyptus tree. we have the core of the low pressure anchored off the coast. it's going to take a while to spin over the region. we have showers in the evening with a potential of a thunderstorm. some of the thunderstorms could contain some heavy downpours as well. and tuesday, look what happens.

the galaxy note 7. the company says one s had a design f san fran says batteries from two batteries are to blame for the galaxy note 7 phones and the company says one of the batteries had a design flaw and didn't fit properly cause going to over heat. samsung executive apologized as he detailed the results of the company's investigation into that problem. about 200,000 devices were affected. the scc is reportedly investigating two massive data breaches as yahoo. the wall street journal reports the focus of the investigation is whether yahoo should have reported the hacks earlier. one
