of la grainch, gentleman, apologized for a killing that happened long before he was born. david begnaud has the story. >> two elderly african-american women were standing in the hall way and they were pointing to some of the historical pictures, and one commented to the other in almost a whisper, they killed our people. >> reporter: once le grainch, gentleman, police chief researched the death of a teen 77 years aeld. he felt the need to apologize. >> what did the department do well? >> i think they failed calloway.

>> reporter: it was 1940 in the jim crow south and police never investigated the murder or tried to find the suspects in the death of austin calloway. in the middle of the night the black teenager who had been arrested for assaulting a white woman was kidnapped from his jail cell. he was shot in his arms and legs and hands. >> reporter: james calloway is his cousin. >> apology accepted but nothing can bring back what we lost. >> i think positive things have come out of these efforts. i think there's a new hopefulness of what might be achieved to advance racial justice. >> reporter: his death would make headlines across the country. he was one of the estimated 4,000 people killed because of his race between 1877 and 1950.
