kpix 5's anne makovec is live at santa clara county sheriff's headquarters with the very latest. anne. >> reporter: the sheriff's department has saturated patrols in the santa cruz mountain. they have been hunting for the suspected bank robber for more than 24 hours now. he is considered armed and dangerous and he was last seen last night. it started when this man robbed a bank of america in scotts valley at around 10 a.m. yesterday. 12 hours later and 15 miles away, this is where he was last reported seen. >> the guy was in between me and the cops so i wasn't about to wait around if they start shooting, i just put it in reverse and backed straight up. >> reporter: but there were no shots. just another slippery getaway for the suspected bank robber. but let's back up. officers say after he robbed the bank, the man hopped into a getaway car and took off on northbound 17 hitting several vehicles along the way. scotts valley police officers chased him over the hill into

santa clara county. one of them opened fire near lexington reservoir. the suspect's car became disabled near redwood estates. he took off into the woods on foot. then he broke into a home on weaver road in the hills above los gatos last night. neighbors say it was this home. a woman came home and saw him. he was armed with her hunting knife. he changed clothes and stole her van then got to elder croft heights. happen upon the attempted arrest. >> the cops had him there. there was probably three or four cops at that time. >> reporter: but the suspect escaped for the second time. all of this evasion was done through windy rugged terrain, a combination of hiking on foot and driving on steeply perched narrow roads in an area that doesn't normally see a lot of crime. >> you hear about it but i mean i didn't expect to see it by any means. >> reporter: here's what the

suspect was last seen wearing, green beanie, blue gloves, teal sharks top, black and white shoes and dark pants. the good news, nobody who came into contact with this man was injured. no physical contact was made with the woman whose home he broke into. but obviously, she is very shaken up. hopes that the guy will be caught soon. anne makovec, kpix 5. new at noon, a dramatic arrest in san francisco. it happened at illinois and 19th around 9 a.m. the suspect was sleeping in his car and was armed with a knife when officers closed in on him. as soon as the suspect woke up, he tried to ram his way out damaging several cars in the process. officers then pepper sprayed the suspect before arresting him. sfpd says the suspect was wanted on a felony warrant but no word on the charges. new at noon, sources telling kpix 5 that it was carbon monoxide poisoning that led to the deaths of a couple in berkeley. 35-year-old roger morash and

his wife, 32-year-old valerie, were found dead earlier this week along with their two cats. valerie was a researcher at uc- berkeley and roger was a game developer. they were found in a fourplex on deakin street where the couple lives for several years. a memorial service is 6 p.m. tonight at the ed roberts campus on adeline street in berkeley. the board of directors which operates the golden gate bridge approved contracts today helping pave the way for a suicide deterrent system. one of the contracts is with the california highway patrol which would control traffic during the four-year construction period. the project to install the giant nets will start this year and finish in 2021. in politics, donald trump's first meeting with a foreign leader while in office. the president just sat down with british prime minister theresa may. weijia jang reports from washington, dc. >> reporter: kenny, this was a

very friendly meeting. president trump and prime minister may were publicly praising each other and both pledged to grow and support what they call a special relationship between the two countries which are both undergoing big changes. president donald trump greeted british prime minister theresa may at the white house this afternoon. they held a joint news conference that focused on isis, russia and trade issues. >> a free and independent britain is a blessing to the world. and our relationship has never been stronger. >> the trade deal between the u.s. and the uk is in the national interests of both countries. and will cement the crucial relationship that exists between us particularly as the uk leaves the european union and reaches out to the world. >> reporter: it's the first visit by a foreign leader at the white house since president trump took office. president trump and mexican president enrique pena nieto held an hour hall phone call today amid rising tensions. >> we are going to renegotiate

our trade deals and we're going to renegotiate other aspects of our relationship with mexico. it was a very, very friendly call. >> reporter: the trump administration suggested tentative plans on how the u.s. will get mexico to pay for the wall. >> one possibility is to tax the imports from mexico anywhere from 5 to 20%. >> vicente fox struck back tweeting that if the u.s. imposes an import tax mexico would do the same to u.s. exports. fox is the former mexican president. >> reporter: a warm atmosphere here at the white house. president trump accepted an invitation from queen elizabeth for a state visit later this year and his wife, the first lady, melania will accompany him. >> back to mexico, what else do we know about the call with the president of mexico? >> reporter: president trump says the call was an hour which

is substantial. he said he had some very good relationships with the president of mexico despite the drama we saw unfolding on twitter yesterday basically both presidents saying that they don't want to meet next week. but president trump said he is looking forward to reestablishing, um, a relationship with mexico. >> weijia jang for us live in washington, dc, with us today, weijia, thank you. another historic moment in washington today. thousands of pro-life marchers are garbed for the annual march for live. here's the crowd on the national mall. you can see many holding up pro- life signs. many of them started at the national mall and are marching to the u.s. supreme court building and, of course, president trump wants to overturn roe v. wade and will defund planned parenthood. this rally happens ever year for 44 years. this year the event includes an unprecedented speaker. [ applause and cheers ] >> president trump has promised to appoint a judge who is a pro- life candidate to fill the vacancy on the supreme court. bay area mayors and others across the country vow to maintain sanctuary status for their cities. one republican mayor in florida is now complying with president trump's immigration crackdown. mayor carlos gimenez ordered jails in miami-dade, florida's largest county, to follow the law. jimenez says the decision was

escape unharmed. facebook just added new features to keep your information more secure including the social media network says that users can now register a security key that plugs into the usb drive of your computer. once it's registered, all you have to do is tap the security key to log in. taking a live look at the big board now, as we close out the week on wall street, you can see the dow is down about 20 points. a government study finds some british women are being told by their employers to wear high heels, makeup, revealing clothes and even dye their hair blonde. jonathan vigliotti reports one woman was fired over the dress code and now is fighting back. >> i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: some like sarah jessica parker on "sex and the city" see heels as a coat of arms. others call them their achilles heel. what women wear on their feet is personal but nikola says she was ordered to put heels on, on her first day at work. >> my manager met me and said,

well, you can't wear those. >> reporter: in the uk, it's against the law to require women to wear heels. but some companies exploit a dress code law that makes filing a complaint costly and time-consuming. >> the law needs to change. >> reporter: fed up, thorpe filed a formal petition to have the issue debated in parliament. the petition led to a parliament try report. hundreds of women contributed saying they were required to dye their hair, wear revealing outfits, and reapply makeup! we spoke with susan a professor at fordham law and asked if such mandates are legal in the u.s. >> in general, yes. but in new york, you can only tell a woman to wear heels to work if you also tell the men to wear heels to work. >> it's objectifying. i don't understand why some of these male, female employers are so attached to this almost like mad men era of men looking like men and women looking like women. >> reporter: parliament has debated a number of topics in

the past including whether or not to ban donald trump. but never before have they discussed heels. this dress code controversy will be debated in march. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. if you are often running late for work you're not alone. a new study shows that almost 30% of workers don't make it on time at least once a month. almost 20% find themselves late for work at least once a week. a new careerbuilder.com study found nearly half blame traffic, more than 30% say that they are late because they overslept and about a quarter of people blame bad weather. others blame poor planning. managers say sometimes the excuses can get outrageous things like, quote, my pet turtle needed to visit the exotic animal clinic, me mother- in-law wouldn't stop talking and i had to watch a soccer game that was being played in europe." so don't use that one. >> no, i like the turtle one. i want to use that. just to let you know, if you are hearing a dog bark or whimper, we have a dog in the studio. off from an area of low pressure out over the open waters moved into our area this morning. now nothing but sunshine due to that right there, blocking ridge of high pressure diverting this area of low pressure well to the north of the bay area so, sure, there's some storminess out there. but not this time, not going to interfere with the weekend plans. this is a big getaway friday and what we have on tap for you today is nothing but sunshine. the rain will not return to the bay area until wednesday. that's according to our futurecast. 50s in the central valley. 32 going up to 34 in the high sierra with nothing but sunshine on tap. carry chains. nothing but bluebird skies all weekend are layers and layers and layers of powder. 50s daytime highs. sun goes down 5:28. and boy, once it does it cools off rapidly. tonight we'll see frost developing away from the bay. and as we do so boy it's going

just talk about the fact that it's very important that when you take your pet in to a veterinarian if they are not well to find a veterinarian who does specialize in those animals. dog and cat medicine is not the same as what we call pocket animal or exotic animal medicine so you want to make sure whoever you see actually has experience treating those pets. so i, for example, love to treat rabbits and chinchillas and all those little guys as well but not every veterinarian does so it's important. >> and what's the best way for them to do that? >> to find out? that's a good question. i actually think that calling an emergency hospital or a veterinary specialty practice would be able to be able to refer you to veterinarian who does treat those types of animals. >> dr. jill chase, i think drake wants to go outside right now. it's lunchtime and today our fresh grocer tony tantillo has tips on a versatile veggie. >> reporter: well, today's tip of the day is going to be is going to be with yellow onions. sweet onions, red onions, white onions but regular yellow onions the number one consumed and sold onions in the u.s. haven't done a tip in a while. this time they are great in so many different recipes. the longer you cook a yellow onion the sweeter it becomes. did you know that? let's talk about selection and storage. a new crop of yellow onions in the market. when you buy them, out of skin nice and translucent like this very important. nice and firm like a firm apple. make sure it's not sprouting at all. heavy for their size. do not store them and keep them away from moisture store them in a cool, dry place. that's it. shelf life is long but not too long. don't hold them too long. they will lose their value.
