sfo officials confirm there were five people detained here there are port. among the chance -- chants and the sea of signs, auch med try to reach his nephew who holds a green card from yemen. he says that his nephew flew from malaysia and then he was detained. the family doesn't know if and when he will be released. >> i talked to him and he texted me back. he is under a lot of pressure, but we advised him not to answer any questions.>> reporter: representing his nephew. it's a confusing battle right now. >> we don't know what is happening hour by hour.

nothing is being implemented nationwide. the white house is going back and forth on whether the ban applies to them and it is mass chaos. >> reporter: she has not seen or heard from her rented six years. she says that she just got word that he is being departed. -- deported. >> it breaks my heart and i hate trump. >> reporter: sfo officials confirmed that customs and border patrol detained five individuals today after president trump signed an executive order to block arrivals from seven predominantly muslim countries. after five hours, there was good news for achmed. his nephew was released. >> i was nervous and worried about what was going on. i was nervous and i am happy now. >> reporter: we have learned that all five individuals who were detained have been

released.>> jessica, you are in the thick of things yesterday, what was it like being in the airport with the crowds?>> reporter: you could feel the ground shaking. there were protesters on the second floor and the first floor and you could not see past anybody. there were hundreds of people and it may have been thousands.>> jessica, thank you. a man was detained after returning from sudan on friday. he was questioned for five hours at jfk and finally released yesterday. the student is a legal u.s. resident, but sudan is one of the nations listed in mr. trump's immigration ban. there is a travel warning. officials are saying that uc students and staff should not travel internationally outside of the united states. the

-- in santa clara this afternoon.>> there is concern and we feel like america is turning their back on us. we want to be here locally to say we are not turning our backs on you. we are still your friends and neighbors. >> reporter: demonstrators say they feel it is important to send the message now. protesters swarmed the country in response to the president's travel ban. pepper spray was used to break up the large crowds. nearly 10,000 people attended a rally in new york. >> reporter: tens of thousands across the country took to the streets demanding president trump reverses executive order on immigration. in washington, they rallied at the white house. the protests in new york began at battery park across from the statue of liberty. protesters then marched to customs and border patrol offices.

after the president signed the order banning citizens from predominantly muslim nations from entering the u.s.. federal judges issued rulings to all parts of the order and some were released. he is from syria and has a visa to visit his wife and son in syria -- in california. new york senator chuck schumer held a conference with refugees. >> it was implemented in a way that created chaos and confusion across the country and it will only serve to embolden and inspire those around the globe who will do us harm.>> reporter: president trump released a statement saying their order is not a banned -- a ban against muslims. those with green cards will be allowed into the u.s. in the future. >> the immediate step in pulling a band-aid off is to do immediate vetting for people traveling in and out of those

countries. >> reporter: senator john mccain says the order was not vetted enough before it was issued. president trump also said in a statement that the u.s. will issues it is -- visas to citizens of all countries. he said that our borders need protecting and we need strong vetting now. in the meantime, democrats will hold a press conference tomorrow night to voice their opposition to the ban. a big court fight is likely to pay out -- play out in the coming days. we have a look at where things stand tonight. >> reporter: the judge's ruling says there is a strong chance that the president's executive order violates due process in the constitution that effectively blocks it from being enforced.>> the ban is unconstitutional, just print merit -- preliminarily based on

what the judge has seen. it is also characterized as misconduct by the president of the united states. >> reporter: the trump administration will have the opportunity to appeal the ruling or to defend the executive order at her hearing next month. george cordell says it is likely just the beginning of a long legal battle. >> the case could end up with united states supreme court. it will move quickly. there is less than a 24 hour turnaround once the president issued the executive order before the lawsuit was filed. >> reporter: there appears to be some confusion as to how and if the executive order will be implemented. the department of homeland security issued a press release saying that it will enforce all of president trump's executive orders. no foreign international person has a right to demand entry to the u.s.. they will continue to fight the battle on two fronts, in the

reporter: they screened more than 1400 people to pick a jury and opening statements are scheduled to begin tomorrow. it -- a witness shot this video and you can see the white car is angled with the car that's the driver inside. the crash happened in san francisco near seventh and harrison. the driver was speeding down the road headed toward the freeway when his car flipped and tumbled a few times. it collided into parking meters before crashing into a fence surrounding an elementary school.>> there could be kids out.. lucky it was early because he would have wiped out everybody out there. at this time later in the morning -- later in the morning, there would have been kids walking to school. it appeared that alcohol was a factor. >> coming up, a new fight against the trump administration and this time

on tuesday: betsy devos is expected to be sworn in. on the same day: teachers, students and activists across the bay area are getting ready to protest trump's choice for education since neri. she is scheduled to be sworn in on the same day that teachers and students will gather at the federal building to protest her confirmation.

they say that she is underqualified and has conflicts of interest. the rally on tuesday as part of the national day of action to protest trump's cabinet nominations. those making look money -- looking to make money off of marijuana. there could be a in on nonmerit -- nonmedical marijuana in unincorporated areas of the county. it would give the county potential time to think about the location for potential dispensaries. eric holder will meet with democrats at their policy retreat next month. earlier, the legislature announced that it had hired holder to represent the state in court battles with the trump administration. his travel expenses will not be paid with straight funds. -- state funds. he cannot see at all, but he knows he is having the time of his life. putting a visually impaired veteran back on the road. there will be plenty more snow to ski on by the end of the week. in the meantime, not a bad respite from the rain. there is more coming up.
