inmates took several hostages. ahead, more on their motives. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, early this morning a lockdown on the campus of the university of california at berkeley was lifted. it had been triggered by violent protests that forced the cancellation of a talk by the editor of breitbart news. a group of protesters dressed in black threw rocks, set fires, and broke windows. breitbart's milo yiannapolis was scheduled to speak. >> reporter: it started as a peaceful protest but at one point felt like a riot. you can see this destruction left behind. the police blame a small group of what they're calling outside

agitators. loud booms rang out in the crowd as protesters set off fireworks in the middle of uc berkeley's plaza, an explosive display to stop ultra conservative breitbart editor milo yiannapolis from speaking on campus. >> it sends a message that no way will we allow any of this to go on near berkeley. >> reporter: many held signs but others covering their faces vandalized property. it erupted in fire, flames shooting through the air burning a nearby tree. some grabbed these barriers and smashed in these windows at the student union leaving a trail of destruction behind. >> i definitely think the students went way too far. they crossed the line by vandalizing the property and putting on fires. >> reporter: the berkeley college republicans invited

yiannapolis who they say raised sexist ideas. one student with a make america great again hat walked into a crowd and was surrounded. as emotions flared, police announced the event canceled. but after they demanded the crowds disperse, many stayed. it turned into a dance party for some celebrating what they call a victory. the university tells us several people suffered minor injuries in the chaos. in berkeley, i'm jessica flores, cbs news. leaders and the call with

airport. they plan to schedule more than 200 departures and landings at their cargo hub it's building. by handling things inhouse, it will cust costs and deliver packages faster. rush card, the debit card company found by hip-hop mogul russell simmons has been fined following a computer problem that prevented customers from getting their money. the consumer financial protection bureau ordered rush card and its payment processor mastercard to pay $10 million in restitution and $3 million in fines. tens of thousands, many of them low income, were cut off from their money for days due to the computer problem. h&r block is working with the ibm super computer watson to do this year's taxes. employees at the company will use watson to identify credits and deductions. the first time watson will be used for tax preparation. watson's already been used in health care and retail settings. and bacon lovers rest easy.

from boston, new york. >> it was a heart-warming race to the top last night. for months rose ann sdoia and mike have been training for a grueling climb up the empire state building run-up, a grueling climb to the summit of one of the tallest buildings in the world. the trek of 1,576 stairs is far from their biggest challenge. tony dokoupil caught up with them before last night's race.

>> reporter: it's an unlikely day that traced back to a hospital bed. >> i was sedated tuesday evening. when i came out, my mom was like, who's that firefighter. i was like, are you kidding me right now? i wasn't just blown up. >> reporter: in 2013 rose ann was watching the runners cross the finish line at the boston marathon. >> i heard and felt the first one go off and then at the second location, the backpack was pretty much behind me by, i don't know, two or three feet. >> reporter: the second explosion destroyed her right leg and left her bleeding in the street. three strangers ran to her aid, one tying a tourniquet to her leg, but it was mike who held her hand all the way to the hospital. >> he was trying to hold the tourniquet, and me -- >> trying to keep her calm and making myself calm. >> reporter: they've been together ever since following surgeries, doctor visits, and a long search for a prosthetic leg. >> it was a whole new world for me trying to pick one.
