in the mountains. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. we have live team coverage right now. anne makovec is following storm-related problems in the north bay. maria medina is in the santa cruz mountains. but first, roberta gonzales tracking the latest storm warnings from our weather center. >> yeah. and we're jumping all over it because just as we're going on air for our noon newscast i have warnings going up, warnings coming down and this is the deal. our live hi-def doppler radar still picking up some pretty heavy rain showers in throughout the northern portion of the bay area which has been hammered since 4 a.m. so there's standing water from healdsburg to san rafael. the peninsula from san francisco all the way to sfo, some moderate precipitation and gusty winds. three-hour delays at sfo on some arriving flights. look at the san mateo bridge leading into the east bay. pretty moderate rainfall at this time near hayward and up towards the richmond area. otherwise, we're filling in with light to moderate rainfall. the santa clara valley now seeing the beginning, the very

front end of this frontal boundary area that's slicing from the north to the south. we have a flash flood warning just issued until 5:30 tonight which means flooding is taking place now. southeastern sonoma, northeastern marin county, in addition to the flood watch in effect for the north bay and the santa clara mountains for up to 5 inches of rain over 24 hours. a flood warning goes into effect right now until 8:30 tomorrow morning for central sonoma county at the mark west creek. and in addition, the winds have been buffeting the bay area up to 45 miles per hour. just about the entire bay area with that wind advisory in place. we're watching the rivers. the napa river at saint helena expected to crest and overflow later tonight. and in guerneville, the russian river will overflow its banks for a second time on friday morning. this is just the beginning of the the front will still pass through the central bay into the santa clara valley as the afternoon progresses. we will stay on storm watch. the rain is adding more

problems to areas hit by previous storms. >> kpix 5's anne makovec is live in san anselmo. anne. >> reporter: it's been coming down all morning in the north bay. we have been to santa rosa all the way down south to san anselmo and it really hasn't let up since. this is the san anselmo creek here behind me connected to the corte madera creek and both of them as you can see rushing very high right now and very strongly. not at flood stage yet, but authorities are keeping a very close eye on it. water is coming down and up in the north bay today. businesses in downtown san anselmo have sandbags outside their doors, houses with weakened hillsides are shoring them up as best as they can. >> the hills are saturated. the yards are saturated. there really isn't a place for the water to go. so anytime there's any water that's falling on the ground it's trying to find its fastest way to the ocean and to the bay

and for us here in marin county that means going through our local creeks and streams and that's where the problems occur. >> reporter: this storm combined with high tide is flooding roads. this picture of shoreline and 101 in mill valley was posted on the twitter and here's a spot where a tree came down on sir francis drake earlier this morning, blocking part of the roadway. and as the rain continues to collect in low-lying areas, many businesses in downtown san anselmo are closed down today. >> the merchants have a big burden and many of them have moved out. i mean, here you stand in front of a vacant building. >> reporter: yeah. so it is coming down. it continues to here in san anselmo all over the north bay. so be prepared. that's what authorities want you to do. if you need your sandbags, shoring up your hillsides, whatever, because this is some serious rain. live in san anselmo, anne makevoc, kpix 5. the storm has a lot of parents changing plans today

with many schools in marin county closed. >> from mudslides to downed trees and flooding, santa cruz county leaders say that the bill from the recent storms is now in the millions. kpix 5's maria medina is live where even more damage is expected today. maria? >> reporter: and kenny, i'll tell you about that million- dollar price tag here in just a minute. but first, i want to talk about this mudslide right behind me on highway 17. you can see crews are working through the rain now. this is day 3 for them. now, this slide happened on tuesday. it sent an suv airborne. that driver is okay. but take a look at what people in the santa cruz mountains are dealing with now. bumper-to-bumper traffic because those northbound lanes on highway 17 right by vine hill road are shut down because of the mudslide. we got stuck in the traffic near scotts valley and it was slow going. safe to say that a lot of people were late to work today.

>> we're out here stuck for an hour already. >> reporter: you guys trying to go to work? >> yes, we have work roofing over the hill. already late. >> reporter: now, county crews from the public works department say the damage here because of the storm since december, now estimated at $25 million-plus. since december. and they say that they have declared their third state of emergency on tuesday so a lot of damage here in the santa cruz mountains. again, they cannot catch a break here. they say, in fact, they are stretched so thin that they are asking contractors to help them clean up the mess. for now, we're live in santa cruz county. maria medina, kpix 5. flooding is still a problem for highway 37 in novato. today's rain is only adding to the russian river, which already crested yesterday. right now, both westbound lanes remain closed between atherton avenue and highway 101.

one eastbound lane has been reopened. chp says the traffic headache is expected to last at least a couple of days while the water clears. it was a wet and windy drive across the bay bridge this morning. drivers were taking it very slowly out there. new video just in of some flooding along san francisco's embarcadero. the bay is spilling over a bit between mission and howard streets. one lane closed so traffic is slow in that area. getting in and out of bay area airports will be no easy task today. this is a live look out at sfo. so far 138 flights have been canceled and another 133 are delayed. oakland airport and san jose mineta are each reporting 22 delayed flights and so far, each of those airports has canceled fewer than 10 flights. stay with kpix 5 for storm updates throughout the day on air and, of course, you can track conditions anytime online at cbssf.com. new at noon, strong winds pushed smoke toward

firefighters as they battled a house fire in unincorporated san leandro. it started around 9 a.m. on president drive. and here's a view from chopper 5. you can see the fire scorched the facade of the three-story home. firefighters were forced to douse flames from the ground because the floor collapsed in the home. no one was hurt. the fbi is trying a new strategy in hopes to recover a weapon that was stolen from an agent's car. they are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the stolen heckler submachine gun. three magazines and a ballistic vest were also taken from the car. the agent had been in lafayette, orinda and concord the day before noticing the items were missing last month. the u.s. has a new attorney general. president trump is being criticized by his own supreme court nominee for comments that he made about federal judges. cbs reporter weijia jang is following the latest from the white house. >> so help me god. >> reporter: president trump was on hand as jeff sessions was sworn in as attorney

general this morning in the oval office. >> today's ceremony should be seen as a clear message to the gang members and drug dealers terrorizing innocent people, your day is over. >> reporter: mr. sessions says he will focus on crime, terrorism and immigration. >> we need a lawful system of immigration, one that serves the interests of the people of the united states. >> reporter: next, the white house will focus on getting the president's nominee for the supreme court through the confirmation process. >> judge gorsuch is an exceptionally qualified nominee, probably there's rarely been anybody that's been more qualified. >> reporter: president trump praised his supreme court nominee judge neil gorsuch during a lunch with democratic senators. >> i urge you all to confirm him. >> reporter: senator richard bloomenthal said judge gorsuch told him that he is disheartened and demoralized about president trump's criticisms of the federal judiciary. president trump claims bloomenthal distorted the judge's comments. >> his comments were

here's a live look in oakland... maria medina... some of the bay area's mo we have breaking news in the santa cruz mountains. here's kpix 5's maria medina. >> reporter: michelle, kenny, if you were watching my live shot just a few minutes ago, you heard a lot of honking at the end of my live shot. that was a woman telling a chp officer on the side of the road here that a man was down. now, from our vantage point, we have not confirmed any details yet but what we have seen from our vantage point is that there is a person down on the other side of highway 17 on the northbound lanes, that's where they have been working on that massive mudslide here for the last several days. so we can assume that it must be a worker out here. caltrans or a county worker. we tried to get to that scene not too long ago to gather details for a story and they wouldn't let us through. so they are not letting cars or

pedestrians or anyone past that point. the workers ran to whoever is down and they do seem pretty shaken up. now, the good news if there is any good news is that there is a lot of emergency crews here, a lot of chp crews out here trying to make sure that people are safe in this work space here. so they were able to get to that man a few minutes ago pretty quickly. if you listened to my live shot a few minutes ago you heard a woman honking saying a man was down. we'll try to get more details and bring them to you as we can during this newscast. back to you guys. >> thank you. some of the bay area's most popular tourist spots will be off limits today thanks to the storm. muir winds, stinson beach and other sites in the golden gate national recreation area will be closed today including muir woods. officials are warning of winds and flooding and falling trees. we are getting a look at flooding in lake county. this picture was taken in

lucerne this morning. the water had risen to the parking lot. switching gears a little bit, in less than an hour the 49ers are expected to officially introduce the team's new head coach and general manager. coach kyle shanahan is fresh off the super bowl run with the falcons. and john lynch moves from the announcer booth to the front office. you can see the news conference at levi's stadium live on cbssf.com starting at 1 p.m. bay area-based twitter is having a rough day on wall street. shares are falling. and so far today, they have already dropped more than 12%. recent earnings fell short of expectations and ad revenue has dropped. investors were hoping twitter would get a boost from election season since president trump uses 2013 regularly. the dow is up 137. the bay area is in for a treat. mcdonald's has chosen us to test their new crab sandwich

featuring snow crab with seasoned mayo and diced celery at three locations in san jose and one in santa clara. if the crab sandwich does well here it could be sold in 250 mcdonald's across the bay later this year. i'm sold! >> i know. i am, too. but roberta i think with this weather out there i want just soup. the only thing you were talking about was snow. i perked up with snow. not so much the crab part but snow! let's get to it. we have a lot to talk about. it's our live hi-def doppler radar. we have been getting pounded at 4 a.m. in the north bay. you see the heavy rain there and also in the peninsula with the delays at sfo over 3 hours. half moon bay now gusty winds and heavy rain showers. we are expecting 5 inches of rain right there in throughout the santa cruz mountains. now in the south bay you're seeing the light to moderate rainfall push into your neck of the woods. here's your east bay live hi- def doppler radar putting lots of heavy precipitation around that 580 corridor into 680 now also around 880 which leads you into the hayward area. got to get all through this.

we have flash flood warnings in effect for southeastern portions of sonoma county, also northeastern marin county. this means flooding is happening now. flood warning also for central sonoma county at mark west creek, flooding is happening now. we have a flash flood watch which means heads up across the north bay and santa cruz mountains because in both locations, up to five inches of rain anticipated in a short amount of time. cloudy, windy, you can see the flag on the fly at the golden gate bridge. cars are fishtailing. temperatures are into the 60s. the other side of the story has been the very gusty winds. we have a wind gust right now 43 at sfo. winds are pretty much 20 to 30 miles per hour across the bay area. this is why we have a high wind advisory in place. we had those gusts up to 45, some gusts up to 60 in the highest elevation. this is it right here. we have a combination of two things going on. first off, we have the atmospheric river that we have been dealing with for days, weeks, almost a month. then there it is, cold front is very strong, it's tapping

into that atmospheric river. we see the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm throughout the day. winter storm warning in effect for the high sierra up to 36 inches anticipated. up to 2 feet at lake level where the rain is transferring to snow. today's high temperatures up to 64. it's been feeling very balmy outside. don't count on a sunset tonight even though it's slated at 5:43. we're on storm watch. we have several more hours of heavy rain and gusty winds to go. i forecast the front passing through the santa clara valley by four or five with lingering showers for the evening commute through friday. high pressure builds in. five straight days of sunshine. that's the first time this year we have had five straight days of sunshine before rain returns a week from today. >> i don't know about you, but i'm ready for that. >> are you ready for the rain? >> no, the sunshine! >> in time for valentine's

now. >> thank you head out, be careful. most people think of marin county, but don't think of people going hungry but it's a problem. this week's jefferson award winner decided something could be done to help people and cut done on how much food is wasted. allen martin reports. ♪[ music ] >> when i see hunger in my own community, it just breaks my heart. >> reporter: in affluent marin county marv zauderer discovered that one in five people about 50,000 residents worry about where their next meal is coming from. many are hidden. >> there are more than 16,000 seniors who live here and can't make ends meet. >> reporter: plus children and low-income families. but marv found a solution in what was being thrown away. >> 40% of all food in this country is wasted. >> reporter: and in a landfill it's creating methane. three years ago, marv founded a nonprofit "extrafood." partnering with 83 food pantries homeless shelters senior centers and after-school programs, he asked what food they need and how much. >> grocery stores, caterers, schools match those needs.
