including toxic gases. just last month a couple and their cats were found dead inside therefore plex on deacon drive. just over a mile away. they died of carbon monoxide poisoning. no word yet on what killed the two people found dead today but police say there is no threat to the public. the latest on the rough roads. caltrans engineers will get to work on monday to come up with a big fix for a big section of highway 35. obliterated by a mudslide. the hole that opened up yesterday is now 200 feet wide. and 50 feet deep. it happened outside los gatos. it is the biggest in a series of storm related messes. >> the real problem has been in this deep hilly terrain, that's a pig -- a big part of it. slides up top and also slip outs. that's when the soil gives way. and the sinkholes too. >> reporter: caltrans might

build a bridge or a retaining wall. first a geologist has to have a look at it to see what makes the most sense. it won't be open for a while. in the santa cruz mountains some relief for storm weary drivers on highway 17. now one lane open in each direction near scotts valley. in sonoma county highway 12 and 121 are back open after flooding forced a three day closure. over in marin highway 37 is still shut down between novato and vallejo. check out this exclusive view from sky drone 5. crews have been pumping water but it's not fast enough. chp says the closure could stretch into late next week. sky drone 5 also flew over this crumbling stretch of highway one. a big chunk of that roadway of of mill valley between panoramic and pure beach is long -- is gone. likely won't reopen until april. and even the roads that are open are no picnic.

>> new at 6:00, the conditions creating some costly problems for drivers. >> reporter: after a week of downpour the rain has finally stopped. the son down, damages done. quite a few potholes in the roads. this one measures two inches deep. and two feet across. the potholes are costing people a lot of money. this driver had a very bad day. not only with his regular tire damaged but his spare is also ripped up. in some cases the potholes are bending the rims like this one which gets more expensive. >> 680 north. i heard this loud noise. sounded like a pop. five minutes later i could hear the tire going. >> several holes in the tire. >> the roads have deteriorated to the point where i think it's become an emergency. could lose control of the car. >> reporter: cities are rushing to fix hundreds of storm caused potholes before the rain returns.

in danville they are planning a pothole repair blitz on monday. working on both sides of sycamore valley road. a lot potholes -- i can feel that one -- a lot of patching up in the next few days. aside from potholes, city workers will also be repaving streets like this one here. pretty badly damaged. also cleaning up after mudslides. live in danville, kpix 5. >> thank you. jerry brown estimates storm repair costs could cost $160 million statewide. he is asking president trump to issue a disaster declaration for california. to the east coast, protesters stood shoulder-to- shoulder outside the planned parenthood clinics across -- across the country. they were not all standing for the same thing. kpix 5's maria medina spoke with demonstrators on both sides at a rally in redwood city. >> reporter: on one side of the street, protesters against

planned parenthood. and on the other side just steps away -- counter protesters. those who support the national nonprofit. >> i personally had an abortion. >> reporter: lisa rockwell part of the crowd of supporters who organized in response to the anti-planned parenthood protests nationwide with her own personal story. >> it was a really difficult choice and a really sad choice but it was the best choice for me. >> i cannot believe people have the right to kill other people. >> reporter: those against the organization though smaller in numbers outside the clinic stood their ground. calling to take away federal funds from the organization. >> i do not appreciate my money being used for a cause i do not agree with. >> reporter: both sides passionate about their own points of view. no matter the size of their groups today, they made sure their messages were heard loud and clear.

in redwood city, maria medina, kpix 5 news. the anti-planned parenthood protest spanned from san francisco to san jose and napa. also in san jose. residents stormed ocean beach today with a larger-than- life message. resist. a response to president trump's actions since he took the oath of office. kpix 5's jackie ward was with the crowd. >> reporter: from the ground to the sky, hundreds of people assembled to chant. and show their resistance. spelling it out across the sands of ocean beach. this mother dropped her 3-year- old daughter here. and says it's a lesson about democracy. >> if there's a problem we don't sit back and take it. we express ourselves and say what we think and try to get what we want done. no more complacency. >> reporter: not a bad turnout.

a well-known san francisco protester who has been relatively quiet the past couple years. his supporters say they are glad to see him back. >> i believe in freedom of speech. i've lived in places where you had to be afraid of what you were going to talk about. so i think as a community building experience it's a wonderful way to be out and enjoy san francisco and connect with other people that feel the same way. >> we are part of a wave that is something great and i think we are in a historic moment here that -- from here on out -- this is new. we are going to make history. >> reporter: we spoke with representative of the san francisco gop who says he is tired of the weekly protests. >> the hillary people are acting like 3-year-olds throwing a temper tantrum. and they need to be given a very long time-out. >> reporter: that won't keep these people down. brad newsom tells us this is just the beginning. >> i feel just as passionately about bush and cheney should have been in prison and impeached in whichever order was appropriate. but this is way beyond. >> reporter: in san francisco just jackie ward, kpix 5.

according to the facebook page 40,000 people showed up at ocean beach. thousands of people at this hour lining market street in san francisco for the annual chinese new year parade. cate cauguiran is in the middle of the action live at second and market. >> reporter: i am standing in the thick of crowd here at second and market street keeping an eye on the parade route. we've got a couple cable cars ready to go out. the parade kicks off a little under an hour ago. this is a tradition in the city that's been around since the gold rush. there will be more than 100 groups in addition to brightly colored globes. elaborate costumes, fireworks have been going off. but the highlight that everyone seems to tell me about is the 268-inch golden dragon that will snake through the city and that takes a team of 100 people from a martial arts group.

at lake oroville tonight. a mystery along the bay area coast. the gruesome object that washed ashore and the search for the person it belonged too. a wildly popular comic strip but tonight he says he no longer feels welcome at his alma mater because of his political views. as for the weather it was nice enough today but there's rain on the way. we'll tell you about that when we come back with the forecast after the break. ,,,,,,,,

>> reporter: this is the highest level lake oroville has ever been. you can imagine that because of this another first. a design that has never been put to the test until today. it's the tallest dam in the country. >> talking about this structure that extends for 1700 feet. >> reporter: for the first time since it was billed 50 years ago, water is pouring over into its emergency spillway. >> from right here over two here. >> reporter: department of water resources in a news conference stressed the massive amount of water poses no threat. the emergency spillway is doing exactly what it was designed to do. >> if we get into a big event and we don't have the pool we need to attenuate that the flows -- the unkempt load -- and controlled flows will be a threat. >> reporter: prepared for this since tuesday after erosion created a cavity in the spillway. >> as you look at the spillway it is something to behold. but the department of resources

wanted to stress at current there is no danger posed to the dam or to the general public. they are monitoring the water levels with cameras and sensors and should this change, they will be at the table to see what to do next. in oroville, kpix 5. back in the bay area there are concerns the anderson reservoir is dangerously overloaded. 96% capacity but not supposed to exceed 68 because it's never been seismically referenced. a study found a large quake could cause the dam to fail and that would put morgan hill and gilroy at risk. the district is releasing water from anderson dam as fast as it can. a great mystery in the north bay after a human foot washed up on the county coast. a park ranger found the foot inside a shoe similar to this one. black with black laces. investigators retrieved the foot from duran beach on

tuesday. tonight trying to determine who it belongs to and where it came from. police in milpitas are investigating an armed robbery that ended in murder. officers were called to a complex near the great mall just before 11 last night. after a woman reported a man pointed to guns in her face and stole her car keys. short time later officers heard a single gunshot coming from the nearby parking structure and inside they found a man dead and the suspect racing away in the stolen car. >> we received a call of a collision where a single male was seen running from the vehicle holding weapons. officers got into pursuit. suspect was involved in another crash. he was taken into custody. >> reporter: police arrested the suspect. so far they are not publicly identifying the suspect or the victim. a bay area cartoonist famous for his take on office

politics says he's now feeling unwelcome at his alma mater because of his personal politics. kpix 5's john ramos on why the creator of dilbert is now cutting ties with cal. >> reporter: last week a protest at uc berkeley descended into violence to keep an unpopular right-wing columnist from speaking. it seems things have changed at the birthplace of the free speech movement. >> did it bother you at all? >> i'm bothered by the fact he came to our campus. >> reporter: but it did bother some. >> some chilling video from berkley. >> reporter: scott adams is creator of the comic strip dilbert. the cartoon satirizes modern office politics but adams also gets political in his personal video blog post. lately he's been seen on national tv praising president trump's powers of persuasion. so after last week's protest, adams is convinced he would not be welcome at his old alma mater. >> at this point it's pretty clear that berkley doesn't like

weather. very dry for the past couple of days. probably a welcome change for most of us but not going to last. high-def doppler right now is not showing much. time-lapse. not an echo to be seen. nor a cloud in the sky toward the bay area. numbers plunging a bit, oakland 57. livermore 55. san francisco 57. santa rosa 59. chilly tomorrow when we wake up and a high clouds or two floating overhead. inland, bundle up. 40 degrees sunday morning. there will be sunshine. numbers recovered a 60. here is another unremarkable time-lapse. because of the way this guy should look tomorrow and aside from a few high clouds sneaking in it will be a severely clear sunday. all looking pretty good. dry until early thursday. there is low pressure over california but a sharp ridge of high pressure just offshore right now. directing all of the clouds

into the pacific northwest where they belong. for us seeing dry weather this weekend and a few clouds monday, tuesday. it all changes by late wednesday, thursday. when the top of the high- pressure ridge is cut off and we open the door to westerly with a strong jet stream returns next week. and nothing stopping the moisture out of the pacific. from being steered straight towards central california. there will be something by wednesday night into thursday. tonight for the chinese new year parade tonight will be clear and temperatures in the mid-50s. in an event that began 80 years ago in 1937 in rancho santa fe, bing crosby had the first pro- am in 1937. they shifted it to monterey coastline after world war ii. and there it has resided ever since. tomorrow what is now the at&t pebble beach pro-am 60 degrees and sunshine. over the bay area fair and mild finish. mostly sunny conditions through wednesday.

>> reporter: 200 spelling champions faced off in an important elimination round. only about a quarter of the students will move on to the bay area spelling bee in our studios next month. the winner of that competition will go on to scripps national spelling bee in washington, dc. many of the third through eighth grade students are taking part for the first time. >> i studied for three or four weeks. >> reporter: familiar faces too including last year's regional winner, and third trip to the regional contest. >> i'm aiming to get better every year. like better than i was last year. >> reporter: sandy chan gave her dr. advice on her second try. >> having confidence. i know she's got it. do her best and have fun. >> right clearly. don't worry about capital letters or punctuation.

a section of highway 35 in the santa cruz mountains is gone... by a mudslide. our top stories major road damage remains after stores pounded the bay area. section of highway 35 in the santa cruz mountains is gone. washed away by a mudslide. caltrans is beginning to figure out how it's going to make repairs. and roads that are open can be treacherous. bay area city's rushing to fix hundreds of potholes. some large enough to cause real tire damage. demonstrators put on a peaceful protest against president trump at ocean beach. event organizers say thousands of people lined up on the beach to form the word resist so the message could be seen from this guy. they say it's more than just a protest. they say it's a way for like- minded community members to come together and connect. protesters on both sides turned out at planned parenthood clinics around the country and in the bay area. those who support the women's health organization outnumbered people who oppose it. also protests in san francisco san jose and napa.

the competing rallies indicated a renewed level of conflict over abortion. roxana saberi on the day of demonstration and changes that could be coming under president trump. >> reporter: from ohio to the nation's capital, thousands of people took part in dueling rallies for and against abortion rights. and st. paul barricades separated demonstrators as they faced off outside a planned parenthood clinic. antiabortion rights groups are calling on congress and president trump to stop funding the health provider because it offers abortions. >> clearly momentum is on our side. majority of americans agree taxpayer dollars should not be funding abortions. >> reporter: president trump in the past has mentioned taking federal dollars away. a move his vice president and with help -- health secretary support. in new york supporters of planned parenthood rallied.

>> so many people do equate planned parenthood with abortion and in fact abortion is a tiny tiny percentage of the services they offer. >> reporter: supporters say defunding the group could make it harder for women to get access to birth control, cancer screenings and testing for diseases. >> what do you think about the argument the flooding should be diverted to health centers that help women but don't provide abortions? >> so the fact is that there actually aren't enough of those health centers to take the patients that we provide services to. >> reporter: planned parenthood says none of the federal money it receives is used towards abortions but anti-abortion- rights supporters want those dollars taken away. roxana saberi, cbs news, new york. >> reporter: president trump has band funds for international groups. immigration raids sparked a different protest outside the white house today as the president plan for deportation is starting to take shape. people chanted undocumented,

unafraid. and no band no wall no raid. raids have been carried out in several states including here in california. southern california more than 150 arrests were made. but officials say it is all routine. >> first of all they're not rounding anyone up. the people that i.c.e. apprehend are people who are illegal and then some. >> immigration officials claimed the raids have been in the works since president obama was in office. mayor sam liccardo also laid out a not-so-subtle message for the trump administration in his state of the city address. >> to those who seek to divide new americans from the rest of us, we denounce the politics of fear and of exclusion. our police officers will not engage in immigration enforcement that tears our families apart and sows missed trust in our community. >> [ applause ]

years by a relative. her family did not want to talk about it. she was then raped in high school where no one believed her. she explains she does not condone violence. she says this song is a metaphor for rape survivors to take back their power. the first step, breaking the silence. >> predators thrive in the shadows. it's very empowering and important. >> reporter: in san francisco, betty yu, kpix 5. cho will also be handing out dozens of grammies tomorrow hosting the premier ceremony before the telecast announcing winners in 70 categories. after that she will be one of several local artists up for awards at the main event. they include san francisco tyco for best dance electronic album. oakland singer-songwriter fantastic is up for best contemporary blues album. bilingual hip-hop duo los rakas is nominated for best latin rock urban or alternative album. and lori lewis is up for best

environmental health is using it to test the paint. >> apparently this inside part contains lead. >> reporter: they learned about the issue on social media after the blogger natural baby mama offered to test products and found several cups used by children tested positive for lead. prompting moms to start doing their own testing. >> i'm sure had no idea they were putting lead on their bottle. >> susan is the founder of an organic boutique coincidentally named sprouts san francisco. she doesn't carry the cups. >> you never know something can break down. maybe they don't ask the right question. which has happened to us in the case of other vendors. >> reporter: the manufacturer told us we have made the decision to conduct a voluntary recall. however friday they backtracked stating independent test results show lead levels are below legal limits but they will continue to work with the safety commission. in a statement the agency stressed there is no safe level of lead for children and noted strict limits under federal law at 90 parts per million. >> it is detecting lead a

little bit about 4000 parts per million so we would send that to an independent lab to verify. >> reporter: law prohibits exposing children to lead through foreseeable use and abuse. >> they love to take things apart. >> reporter: the center for health karen cox knows kid -- kids could access the paint while some parents say they use a bottle without the cover. >> any product should not have lead in it. as simple as that. >> reporter: two other non- toxic bottles also contained small solder dots originally covered by a base. it's bottles now have an updated design and no longer contain lead. like green sprouts the bottles do pass the test for safety. >> this is an eye-opener. and it's wonderful that parents and bloggers are doing this testing and spreading the word. >> reporter: julie watts, kpix 5. >> so it's important to note just because you have one of these products doesn't mean your child has been harmed. experts recommend testing every
