storms move in.. in hopes of heading off a potentially catast now at noon, a frantic fight to lower the water level before new storms move in. in hopes of heading off a potential catastrophic love -- catastrophic flood. >> it's a race against time right now. bags of boulders are being airlifted onto the emergency spillway at lake oroville. crews are trying to make emergency repairs before the next round of rain. nearly 200,000 people are evacuated.

some of the towns included in the evacuation order orvella, gridley, live oak, maryville and yuba city. reporter and mike vick is in oroville where the work is going on right now. -- ann macavic. >> reporter: things look tentatively stable here and apparently i don't have my microphone on? okay. i can you hear me? okay. i apologize for that technical difficulty. bottom line is things appear to be fairly stable at the dam so that is very good news. officials have not said yet whether or not it is safe enough around that area for the evacuees to return home. officials are racing against the next storm to lower lake levels and fix damaged spillways on the lake oroville dam. wet winter weather oh caused parts of the spillway to break apart on wednesday. the bear hill under the

emergency overflow started eroding. raising concerns it could fail and send a salami downstream. emergency operation is now underway as helicopters dropped bags of large rocks and gravel to shore up the areas around the dam. >> overnight we had crews that were creating a gravel road into that area so we can move heavy machinery. >> 188,000 people were told to simply leave their homes on sunday. shelters outside of the flood zone are packed and everyone waits for the all clear before returning home. >> i'm no engineer but people don't think it was handled right at all. >> reporter: still no timeline for when it might be. today the department of water resources says the gash in the main spillway has been contained. even as water continues to pour over it. >> we are willing to sacrifice the bottom of that to get water out of the reservoir. we'll be able to reevaluate during the dry months and

rebuild it. >> reporter: and officials are holding a news conference within the next half hour that they will hopefully be able to give us an update. the main point here is when will these evacuees be able to return home? we have heard some rumors they are moving some of the barriers around some of the local roadways. so that could be good news. we'll keep you posted. live in oroville, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> thank you. the red cross and salvation army are accepting donations starting today the red cross will take donations at food mac stores in contra costa and solano county. crews are scrambling to finish work on highway 37 before the rain returns. the work is now going on across the clock. workers are trying to raise the level of the roadway to prevent flooding. highway 37 has been swamped during the recent storms. a stretch of the road will be closed until at least thursday morning. crews working to repair a massive sinkhole in oakland. more than 20 feet deep and

almost swallowed a parked car. officials hope to start filling the hole but it will depend on the forecast. quite a few people known as -- noticed mysterious lights before the sun came up. kpix 5's jackie ward joins us now to shed light on the lights. >> see what you did there. had a lot of people talking this morning. bright shining light was easy to see in the dark clear sky. on twitter people were trying to figure out what it was. karen mcmahon tweeted this looks like a white light with a fan sparkler tail possibly a comet in the southwest sky. david tori saw it from the peninsula and said interesting object in half moon bay sky. meteor? turns out with it was neither. it was a light from missile tests the navy was conducting off the coast. to trident d5 missiles were launched early this morning. one at 3:30 the other at 6:20. these were not armed and never flew over land. north korea tested a missile on

sunday and how president trump reacted has been making headlines lately but the navy says this test was not conducted in response to any ongoing world event or as a demonstration of power. back to you. >> thank you so much. hearing on marijuana will take place a little more than an hour from now in sacramento. ever since the 2016 election when california voters approved proposition 64 state lawmakers have been scrambling to come up with ways to regulate the legalize recreational pot industry. among today's speakers colorado governor john hickenlooper who -- one of the first to legalize pot for nonmedical purposes. another industry in a similar situation autonomous cars so-called self driving vehicles were the topic of a major hearing on capitol hill. the nation's lawmakers want to get ahead of the industry. and establish regulations before such vehicles become mainstream. the industry is afraid too much regulation will hinder progress

ambassador. white house counselor kellyanne conway told nbc's today show that is what cost flynn his job. >> it was misleading the vice president that made this unsustainable. >> reporter: department of justice told the white house general flynn had not been truthful about the phone calls and warned that could make him vulnerable to blackmail. >> at that moment he still had the complete trust of the president? >> matt, i'm telling you what the president has said which is that he accepted general flynn's resignation and he wishes him well. >> reporter: president trump seemed more upset about the leak saying that was the real story. president trump immediately named retired three-star army general keith kellogg to be at -- acting survivor -- until a permanent replacement is named. >> at least three candidates very strong candidates that would be considered for a permanent position here. >> reporter: considered a placeholder and not a contender. retired vice admiral robert

you. today is valentine's day. the average american will spend about 85 bucks on it this year. the national retail federation, teachers are likely to get a $7 gift. animals are said to get a $4 present. added up, the americans are expected to spend $4.3 billion on jewelry. if your valentine is a vanilla lover, they may be out of luck. worldwide shortage has driven up prices. centered in madagascar home to more than three quarters of the world's vanilla fields. from $11 a pound to nearly $200 last year. for businesses that depend on it it left a sour taste in their mouths. >> what does that mean to your bottom line? >> well, i just kind of hope that we are going to make it through the season. >> clements says she's losing money on every scoop. a gallon of organic vanilla extract has quadrupled since she opened her doors five years

northwestern court -- quarter of the state leaving us with- clouds. bottom line is we have the dry conditions. and we have very mild temperatures. by thursday a very fast-moving front blows through the bay area just in time for the morning commute. with rain and wind. in and out of the showers all the way through next wednesday. there's the weak system to the north of us. high, thin veil of cloudiness but more sunshine today than yesterday. several storms out over the pacific ocean. this is how i am planning futurecast. by tomorrow clouds thickened. we call it mostly cloudy. by thursday the front pass is through very quickly. leaving ponding on the roadways. and then behind it a little bit of a lull before a more aggressive storm. meanwhile from the first system on thursday easily over an inch of rain throughout the bay area. inch and a half so three things i want you to remember.

dry and comfortable today very mild for valentine's day. rain returns by thursday morning with gusty winds. rain totals the next series of storms will be much lower than last week. five to eight inches in the highest elevations by wednesday. 60s throughout the central valley. monterey bay 48. lake tahoe after kickstarting the morning at 16 your tahoe forecast we've got springtime skiing. until about friday when more snow moves in. temperatures today across the board slightly above average from the 60s to write around 67. outside area oroville whether we have more rain arriving there. from thursday through wednesday. that's almost a whole week of rain. snow in the highest elevations. extended forecast there you have it. rain thursday. a little bit of a lull on saturday. make it a fantastic valentine's day. now it's time to shop and eat. tony shows us an item perfect to pack as part of your lunch. >> reporter: bananas.

you notice sometimes the banana in the cold area in your house. and a lot of times the yellow turning to gray. even sometimes supermarkets. it's the cold temperatures. beautiful yellow turned to a dull gray. that you don't want. so keep them with a draft. fairly cold at night or in the morning or during the day. keep them above the refrigerator this time of year. where it's warmer, it won't turn the gray color. doesn't change the flavor too much. but sure doesn't look at. selection at the market beautiful yellow all the way around. this time of year the better they're going to be. stem and stock green is okay. they have to look nice and bright. ready to enjoy, brown specs all the way around. that's when the sugar is out. don't wait for yellow. that's the sugar screaming. it's ready to enjoy. so there you go. bananas in the wintertime. keep them from turning gray. above the refrigerator or warmer in the kitchen.
