good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, overnight a powerful rain and wind storm including possible tornadoes hit the san antonio, texas, area. tornado and flood warnings have been posted as the storms swept through last night. >> the center section is gone right there. that flagpole is down. the chair that scooted across, my neighbor's chair, the retired cop, the chair went out the gate and flew down the road. >> there are reports of significant damage. the pounding rain and wind knocked out power to about 45,000 customers. roofs were blown off buildings and some areas flooded, but the storm is moving quickly and is expected to be gone by this morning. meanwhile another strong pacific storm is hitting northern california this morning and this one is stronger and bigger than the storm that hit california friday. folks are still cleaning up from

friday's weather, blamed for at least three deaths. >> i've lived here most of my life and i have never seen the levels of water being so high. >> heavy rain, powerful winds, possible flooding, and landslides will make for dangerous travel conditions. it has been a turbulent first month in office for president trump, from the ongoing search for a national security adviser to this weekend's confounding comments over sweden. and they'll spend this national holiday by marking the occasion as not my president's day. >> reporter: president trump spent sunday at his so-called winter white house interviewing several candidates to replace his ousted national security adviser michael flynn. vice admiral harward turned down the offer last week after a

purported clash with the white house. >> the white house is running so smoothly. >> reporter: over the weekend the president held a campaign rally in florida for his 2020 re-election, during which he falsely suggested sweden experienced a major terror attack as a result of taking in refugees. >> you look at what's happening last night in sweden. they're having problems like they never thought possible. >> reporter: after major backlash mr. trump sought to clarify the remark yesterday, tweeting the statement was, quote, in reference to a story that was broadcast on fox news. meanwhile members of his own party raised concerns about the president's recent tweet calling the press the enemy of the american people. >> that's how dictators get started. and i'm not saying that president trump is trying to be a dictator. i'm just saying we need to learn the lessons of history. >> reporter: angry over what they view as president trump's chaotic first month in office, hundreds of demonstrators took part in weekend rallies in

chicago and new york, many blasting the president's short-lived travel ban. >> i'm here to protest everything that 45 stands for. >> reporter: thousands more are expected to take part in not my pretty president in citizens across the country. on the champion, cbs news. a president's day rallies today with citizens across the country. don champion, cbs news. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk about mr. trump's search for a national security adviser with former cia deputy director and national contributor michael morell. we just learned a servicemember died in a non-combat-related event in iraq. it's not related to the mosul offensive where they're fighting to take over. after departing from an air base outside abu dhabi, secretary of defense jim mattis arrives on an unannounced visit to iraq this morning to discuss strategy for defeating isis. the major ground and air

offensive began yesterday. mosul is the last major urban center isis holds in iraq. the u.n. says up to 400,000 civilians could be displaced by the fighting. and jonathan vigliotti has our report. >> reporter: u.s. and iraqi troops moved in swiftly sunday, retaking the city of mosul, setting their sights on the city's airport. they dropped millions of leaflets warning people that the assault was imminent and calling on islamic state militants to surrender. prime minister al abadi announced the aggression on sunday on television. he said it's two-fold. >> translator: we call on our brave troops to start the push to liberate the rest of the city and to liberate the people from the oppression and terrorism of isis, he said. >> reporter: as many as 600,000 civilians live in the western part of the city. the assault is taking place amid new concerns about the

conditions they've been living in. according to those who have escaped, basic supplies like food and water are scarce. the operation to free mosul began last october in the city's less populated eastern side. by january the iraqi government declared east mosul liberated. >> it's symbolic to isis. earlier this month the top u.s. commander in iraq said the city could be liberated within the next six months. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. overseas, malaysian police say four suspects left the country followed the murder of the, aisled half brother of north korea leader kim jong-un.

h video shows two women approaching him. one held something over his mouth. malaysian police released 11 photos and four are under arrest. the ceo of uber has ordered an investigation over sexual harassment made by a former employee. susan fowler wrote in a blog she was subjected to sexual advances over a chat software. it has escalated as far up the chain as could be escalated and still nothing was done. uber ceo yesterday said this is abhorrent and against anything we believe in. anyone who behave this way or thinks it's okay will be fired. spacex is marking a major success. an unmanned rocket blasted off yesterday where moon missions once began. tony dokoupil reports. >> four, three, two, one, ignition and lift-off of the falcon 9 to the space station. >> reporter: with roaring

engines and a cheering crowd, a falcon 9 rocket shot through the crowds beginning a three-day mission to the international space station. the historic launch marked the first time a private space company, elon musk's spacex, lifted off from launchpad 39-a. >> you can see it ascending there. >> reporter: shortly after launch it stuck to landing bringing the rocket back to solid ground for a third time. this rocket can now be reused. musk posted a picture with the caption "baby came back." the spacecraft separated from the rocket and is now headed for the space station blacked with more than 2,000 tons of supplies. it's expected to arrive wednesday. meanwhile spacex has bigger plans to ferry not just supplies but astronauts to space station as early as next year, but there have been setbacks.

on the national transplant waiting list. in china there is a severe shortage of donors. aid a adriana diaz is showing how they're bridging a gap. >> reporter: scientists are working on a possible breakthrough to restore sight but eyes they're using aren't human. they're from pigs. >> so these are actual eyeballs from pigs. >> yes. >> i feel like they're all looking at me. >> you don't have to look at them. >> reporter: he's ceo of a company pioneering the procedure that makes pig corneas suitable for human transplant.
