in the santa cruz mountains where mudslides are a concern. >> let's start with roberta gonzales tracking the storms in the weather center. >> we have atmospheric river conditions since the first weekend of january 2017, here we are seven weeks later experiencing the same weather pattern. so far, today since it began raining here are some of the rainfall totals, three inches in the santa cruz mountains, to the north over two inches in santa rosa. san francisco over one inch in a matter of 10 hours, newark a full inch and .5 inches in san jose, the doppler radar has been lit up all morning long, moderate to heavy rainfall from santa rosa into nevada. east bay you have been getting pounded all morning, concord clayton walnut creek 680 into the 580 quarter into the santa clara valley where we have light to moderate rainfall.

park mohr, willow glen, seventh avenue into william street, santa cruz a bit of a break but you have seen totals a break in san mateo but moderate rainfall from san francisco into the city, richmond district sunset district and bayview district with ponding on the roadways, flash flood warnings for southeastern portions of sonoma, northeastern marin, also central santa cruz county you have the red highlighted area. flash flood until 3:00 pm for southeastern santa cruz county, meanwhile we move to the higher ground in the southeastern santa clara county area or northwest san benito county. another red highlighted area is south-central alameda county, primarily around the niles canyon area we have had mudslides and also the wind has

been going 15 to 20 miles per hour, the wind will be ramping up so we have a high wind warning in effect for the big red highlighted area, otherwise the blue is the advisory which means the wind is 25 to 35 miles per hour, the rain continues this afternoon and so will the storm watch coverage so we are now sending you over to anne makovec from anderson reservoir. >> you have been warning us about the runoff in coyote creek. that is behind me where there is a flood warning in effect, it is not to the top of the banks as you can see, but it is also not peak flow, that will come tomorrow all of this water, the rain combined with the runoff from the anderson reservoir upstream. this is the site people in morgan hill have not seen in more than a decade, water overflowing into the anderson dam spillway. >> i was here most of my life. >> the santa clara valley to --

water district is trying to make room for runoff, with the rain expected to continue, water could be running into the reservoir as quickly as it flows out. >> we are concerned about what that will mean for the watershed which is very saturated. >> the reservoir runs at more than 100% capacity so there was concern about stability. >> there is a threat. >> the state hands -- has mandated it to be filled only to 60 capacity because engineers feared could not stand in earthquake and if it failed the flooding downstream could be catastrophic. >> if the dam did break, we would be flooded and lose everything. >> water officials say this is not a situation like oroville last week where he spillway was damaged, the threat of flooding forced the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people. >> we don't know the reasons

why it failed. but we don't have signs of failure here. >> the immediate concern all along is the possibility of flooding, this creek runs from morgan hill to the san francisco bay. all of the low-lying areas are under close monitoring, they have automated monitoring devices and fire crews are walking up and down the banks seeing which areas are at risk. from san jose, anne makovec kpix 5 as we go to the south bay residents are preparing for a lot of rain. >> one of the biggest concerns, mudslides, jackie ward live along highway 17 with the latest. >> highway 17 has been plagued with landslides all winter long but the latest storm is wreaking havoc all over santa cruz county and the people who live here keep trucking along.>>

the dreams were so clogged, we finally figured out where they were and we got them on clogged . >> these neighbors have lived off of highway 9 for decades. before they spent one hour raking mud and clearing storm drains their street was a lake. >> our neighborhood is so wonderful. we do what we need to do. keeping it safe. >> the ground in the area is so saturated it can no longer hold this tree up and the runoff is strong. the same thing in this area where we ran into the superintendent of santa cruz county public works. >> it has been chaotic at times and it has been busy. we are busy, from fire to fire. >> this is what the san lorenzo river looked like around 8:30

as the level keeps rising posing a threat to neighborhoods already large puddles are forming and the sandbags are out. the area affected the most is highway 17. this mudslide is one of the reasons why traffic has been completely blocked off at times, it has been getting cleaned up for nearly 2 weeks causing chp to close the northbound lanes as crews remove trees and boulders. >> reporter: the good news for drivers who use highway 17 is that there are no new landslides or mudslides to report, for now, from santa cruz county, jackie ward, kpix 5 the powerful surf continues to hammer bay area communities. from the pacific appear -- peer there were some monster waves. >> the big story passing at the

coastline looking at 10, 15 and 20 foot waves they are washing all of the sand onto the street, you can see that here. this is footage from earlier this morning when someone waves got me pretty good pants and shoes all went, here is another sneaker wave when i was getting ready for a report. a police officer shut down pacifica this morning. the high surf is just too dangerous for people to walk on the peer. no word on when they will reopen it perhaps after the storm passes. >> a spectacular sight, last year was not this bad we have been getting hammered by big waves. you can look on the beach and see how much the sand has gone down. >> for pacifica city leaders their concern is the erosion on the coastline.

they have seen a rough winter from sinkholes to mudslides they are ready for the sun to come out. from pacifica, back to you. alameda county issuing a warning as the alameda creek rises, these are pictures not far from where the land gave way, loose mud blocking the road, officials are warning people to use caution. rescue teams on standby near the oroville dam as it takes a hit from the storms as the info increases, dwr is increasing outflow from the dam spillway. nearly 200,000 people were evacuated last week when the emergency spillway was damaged, water is now running into a hole on the main spillway and flowing sideways, despite that the water is now 50 feet below the spillway. rain causing problems for travelers, 105 flights in and

right now i think this is it just make it to the next 44 to 48 hours we will be done. this is our hype -- operator look at this the yellow and orange that is moderate to heavy rainfall. san rafael into mill valley, east bay we have pockets of moderate to heavy rain oakley, brentwood and down to the santa clara valley, anywhere you go, it is sloppy and wet, ponding on the roadways, over three inches of valley in the valley since mid-may, sfo 30 minute delays on some flights, looking at san francisco, all of these roads are definitely ponding from balboa street to ocean avenue, mission street into the mission district and folsom street, the atmospheric river

lifting off the ocean northeasterly, you can see the snow and the high sierra as well, flash flood warnings for alameda county this has been a problematic area since january, and the yellow highlighted area, this encompasses the entire bay area where we do have urban and small stream flooding, so anywhere you go, as you head out the door you will encounter some flooding, some ponding on the roadways with the sidewalks, the wind blowing 15 in san francisco, 15 san ramon, we have stronger gusts for the afternoon that is why this huge red shield encompassing the bay area has a high wind warning in effect through tomorrow with some wind gusting in the higher elevations and immediacy short 60 miles per hour, the blue is a wind advisory so it is a stormy day on presidents' day in the bay area, mid-50s.

if you could take away three things from the weather cast, rain heavy throughout the evening, powerful wind the threat of flooding all the way until tuesday, this moisture is extending all the way back to the hawaiian islands back to the tropics which means we have more rain in the forecast with flooding as well, as we walk through futurecast here is the evening hit and miss scattered showers but at least it won't be consistent. tuesday continuation of scattered showers, here is wednesday with a stray shower and we begin to clear out to sunshine. we do have a couple of inches of rain more in the forecast winter weather advisory for the high sierra, highs today or in the 60s and by the time the sun goes down we will remain wet and we will remain on storm watch. coming up, we take a look at art in unconventional places. ,,,,,,,,,,,,
