live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. n san jose to clean the flo the water's gone, but the work is just beginning. the massive effort in san jose to clean the flood ravaged neighborhoods as thousands head back to their homes, and good evening i'm juliette goodrich. >> and life is starting to get back to normal for thousands in san jose, and in a news conference we learned 140 families showed up today at the opening of an assistance center. the one remaining shelter at james lake high school will close tomorrow. another will open in seven tree, the city is working official estimates to apply for relief funds. we've been in the area all day. >> reporter: this is how olga

perez's home looked the last time she saw it, the waters cresting forcing her family out. >> i don't have my own space, i can't provide my kids their own space. 6 >> reporter: her children are still struggling to accept that everything they know is gone. >> it's hard to get it and process it through your mind that it's all gone and that you need to start from the beginning because you can't do anything about it. >> reporter: the perez family came to the school today to try and recover some of what they lost, sifting through piles of clothing and food collected by the school district within a matter of hours today. >> this is been just going on since 8:00 a.m. >> reporter: the donation center is one of the ways they're trying to help community members like the perezs. >> we had community members lining up before we opened at 9:00. >> reporter: they say the community center, closed to the

press for now, is staffed with nonprofits and government agencies ready to help the flood victims get back on their feet. but on many locks evacuations -- blocks, evacuations orders are still in place. the clean up is continuing. crews in boots, masks, and gloves sweeping mud and dumping trash. many that live here still can't come home, including olga. she walked away with clothing and food today, and will stay with her sister until she can return home. right now she and her daughters say the donations mean everything. >> it makes me feel like there's people out there that care. >> we see the light and we're going to get through this. >> reporter: now the community center will open again at 9:00 tomorrow morning. the franklin mckinley school district is also accepting donations at the elementary school of food, clothing, and other things throughout the week. >> we're seeing the cars

flooded throughout the creek area, and what's going to happen with the cars? >> reporter: yes, there's still some out here in the street, and you can see where the flood waters hit him. we have heavy equipment clearing out the block, and tow trucks will be coming through to help some that have been stranded for the past week. back to you. >> christin ayers, thank you. we have an update on the oroville dam. state officials again reduced the amount of water pouring down the main spillway. it's now flowing at a rate of 50,000 cubic feet per second. that reduction should make it easier for crews to take debris out of a diversion pool at the bottom of the damaged spillway. and check out this view of lake oroville from the international space station. this video was taken wednesday, and shows the lake's high water level. it's now 55 feet below where it was two weeks ago when fears of a collapse triggered evacuations. and today started out actually fairly sunny, but now the light is draining as the

clouds increase, but it doesn't look like there's much on the way. here's how it looks on the high definition doppler. just a touch of like rain, but that's about -- like rain, but that's about -- light rain, but that's about all it amounts to. so a few showers tonight. the higher mountain peaks could get a sprinkle of snow at the peaks, and a chance of showers tomorrow afternoon, and dry next week. we'll have the details in the forecast coming up. and democrats have just chosen a new national chairman. he served in president obama's cabinet, and he has his work cut out for him after last november's election defeat. >> a great american, mr. tom perez. >> reporter: members of democratic national committee picked a new national chairman saturday who they hope will turn opposition against president trump into election victories. it took hundreds of state party leaders and activists two rounds of voting to pick tom

perez as chair. perez served as labor secretary under president obama. >> i know we can win the battles ahead. i know we will win the battles ahead when we put our values forward and lead together. >> reporter: president trump had lunch with florida governor rick scott and wisconsin governor scott walker following his speech friday at the political action conference. >> a couple of days ago i called the fake news the enemy of the people, and they are, they are the enemy of the people. >> reporter: the white house later blocked several news outlets from attending an off camera press briefing. a new york congresswoman said the exclusions outraged here, and she spoke outside the new york times building saturday. >> i with find it alarming -- we find it alarming, and find it breaks the first amendment that protects press freedom. >> reporter: the president focused on black history month in his weekly address, saying he'll bring jobs back to

communities. >> this week i met with manufacturing ceos, and we're bringing back the jobs, i mean really good paying jobs. >> reporter: he says he'll speak more about the issue when he addresses congress tuesday night. and here in california a republican congressman is calling forren a independent inquiry into russia's role in the election. speaking with reporters he repeated that the us should appoint a special prosecutor. he's a trump ally, but appears to be splitting with the president on this issue. >> republicans and democrats who have special access in the select intelligence committees do need to know what russia was doing and how they were doing it. >> reporter: the attorney general should not lead the investigation he says because he worked on the trump campaign. kpix 5 will have a live report

from the convention at 6:00. and new at 5:00, immigrants and rios just making it to the -- refugees just making it to the bay area received a warm welcoming. organizers say they want to make sure newcomers know that their community supports them. >> i want them to feel welcome so they can integrate and can contribute to our community and contribute to this country. >> the event was organized by the oakland vietnamese chamber of commerce. >. and it's been nearly three months since the warehouse fire that took so many lives, and no helping it won't happen again there's a special order. da lin has more. >> reporter: starting immediately if police officers

come across unlawful parties they have to report them to their commanders and a special unit to prevent another ghost ship fire. police responded to calls at the warehouse many times before the fire that killed 36 people. cell phone footage shows officers even went inside, but never contacted code enforcement or city inspectors. >> >. we clearly see opportunities to improve the coordination and communications among the different departments at least last week the assistant police chief asked officers to report illegal parties and warehouse, but the city administrator quickly rescinded the order. the latest order took out the word warehouses. some believe it's in response to the pressure from the artist community saying if officers report on illegal warehouses it could force landlords to kick them out. >> we can't and will not turn a blind eye to immediately safety risks, but we're also very cognizant of the housing

crisis, and want to also not compromise housing security. >> reporter: critics say the policy doesn't go far enough, saying the problem isn't just illegal parties, people living in unsafe warehouses can also be dangerous. but on the other hand, artists wore write even reporting on illegal -- worry even reporting on illegal parties could lead to their evictions. >> we have to make sure the city isn't using it as a way to crack down and put fear in the mind of lard lords. >> reporter: the mayor is saying the new policy is better and browed ere, and -- broader, and protects people living in all kinds ovidian reduce situations -- of dangerous situations, not just warehouses. the mayor will swear in the department's new police chief monday. a baby boy is recovering in a hospital tonight after being severely mauled by the family dog, and we learned the dog was in fact a shepherd mastiff mix not a pit bull as previously reported. it happened yesterday afternoon inside an apartment in concord.

police say the 10 month old boy and his brother were playing when the 80-pound dog turned on the baby. the mother was able to save the child. when officers showed up the dog looked ready to attack, and then an officer shot and killed the dog. the baby had to have surgery, but we're the injuries are not life threatening. coming up, people are riding bart and it could mean more problems for those that do. that they believe is behind the the recent decrease. and we're learning more about the assassination of kim jong un's brother. why one suspect says she thought the whole thing was just a prank. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

authorities me we have new details coming out about the assassination of the half brother of north korea's president. authorities met today with the

woman accused of smearing his face with a deadly nerve agent. it was caught on cameras at the airport. she reportedly told investigators she was paid $90 to take part in what she thought was a tv prank, but she couldn't exactly identify who hired her and showed no effects from handling the chemical. kim died within hours of the attack. and seven suspects are still wanted. >. and meanwhile malaysia authorities are still sweeping one of the airport's terminals in search of any residue of the toxic chemical that killed him. and some students at hoover high school ate cookies with a mixture of drugs. 7 freshman became sick with dizziness and stomach pain, one going to the hospital. police say they know who's responsible, and the school district is taking the incident extremely seriously. >. another weekend of delays on bart, and today it was to remove a tree, but the transit agency is more

concerned about a disturbing decline in ridership overall. weekdays it was down 4.2 percent in the last six months of 2016. weekends took an even hearter hit at 9 -- harder hit at 9 percent drop. bart managers suspect one reason could be weekend track maintenance. >> riders just want to take the chance of the big weekend delay, so they're not taking us at all. >> well the slump is impacting bart's bottom line which could mean fare hikes or service cuts. and still to come, have you filled out your oscar ballot yet? we take a look at this year's big academy award contenders. and we promised you a look at the forecast, and we'll fulfill that promise when we come back. ,,

>> reporter: hollywood is getting ready for its biggest night as oscars gold takes over tinseltown. at the dolbe theater the red carpet is ready. crews are working around the clock, bracing for a possibly stormy sunday. >> fast and furious. really with the weather forecast for sunday we've got to be ready. >> reporter: but not even rain will dampen hollywood's brightest night with a number of acclaimed films vying for the top categories. with 14 nominations, lala land could make hollywood history, toppling titanic from its oscar throne. >> it's right movie at the right time. >> reporter: variety magazine's tim gray says while he doesn't expect the movie to sweep the awards, he bets it will take home several big wins. >> i really think it will take best picture and best director, best actress for emma stone. >> reporter: he expects a statue for viola davis for best

supporting actress in fences. she's among the most diverse group of oscar nominees in years. he says critics and movie goers alike are embracing minority driven films like hidden figures. >> a few years ago if you said you had a movie with three black women in the lead it would have been no, it won't work, but it's working. >> reporter: but can any of this year's contenders out step a musical nod to hollywood's heritage? only oscar knows. >> by the way, down in los angeles tomorrow they've got just a 20 percent chance of showers, partly cloudy skies, in case you were planning to show up at the oscars. in the bay area just about the same odds. the chance of a few showers moving in tonight. looking at the golden gate bridge in the upper left hand corner you can see, well, this is why they call it a web cam. temperatures mostly in the low to mid-50s.

53 at concord, san francisco at 51. san jose 53. partly cloudy skies over much of the bay area, and the high definition doppler looking ominous, but most of the moisture is forecasted to stay offshore and stay out of the bay area. just a little in the north coast as we showed you a bit ago. it's all light rain if it's hitting the ground, and just off the peninsula light showers, so a splash of showers from time to time wouldn't be a surprise tonight but wouldn't about to a tenth of an inch, and most of that close to the shore. another chance on sunday, i'll show you that in a minute. it's because of the low pressure moving south over the bay area. not much oomph or moisture, but by tomorrow night another system moving through brings another light snow showers up to the mountains. two to eight inches of new snow, not bad. winds gust to a max of 40 miles per hour, so light snow and gusty winds making travel

delays possible. and in futurecast skies clear from the north after a few showers move over the area, and by 3:00 in the morning clear and cool, and tomorrow morning we'll have partly to mostly sunny skies. watch what happens later in the day though in the north part of screen, a few showers working in by sunday afternoon, and then slowly begin to subside south by tomorrow night at this time. so tomorrow night maybe a few more showers than we get tonight, but not amounting to much either way. partly cloudy skies tomorrow morning. it will be chilly tomorrow with mostly clear skies overnight, and way into the future, high pressure establishing itself over the eastern pacific, sending anything right back where it belongs, up to seattle. so we'll finally get a high to block all the systems coming in, and after the chance of showers tonight and a chance of a few showers tomorrow night we'll go sunny and warmer starting tuesday. so overnight lows tonight,
