attorney general pick. but others aren't so sure. sessions is now facing calls to remove himself from any investigation looking into connections between the trump presidential campaign and russia. don champion is at the white house with more details. >> do you swear -- >> reporter: it was during his confirmation hearings in january that general senator jeff session failed to disclose he had two meetings with russia's ambassador to the u.s. in the last year. >> i have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and i did not have communications with the russians. >> reporter: a justice department spokesman says that as a member of the armed services committee, last year the senator had over 25 conversations with foreign ambassadors. this morning, jeff sessions responded to the allegation. >> i have not met any russians at any time to discuss any political campaign. >> reporter: democrats say he lied under oath. >> because the department of justice should be above

reproach, for the good of the country, attorney general sessions should resign. >> reporter: so far no republicans are calling for the attorney general to resign. but more and more are joining democrats in saying he should not lead any investigations into connections between the trump campaign and russia. >> i will recuse myself from any issues pending his ability to clarify what actually occurred. i think he needs to clarify and i do think he should recuse himself, absolutely. >> reporter: the attorney general is consulting with department of justice lawyers about his role in the russian investigation. don champion, cbs news, the white house. >> paul ryan weighed in on the issue today saying he believes sessions claimed that he was not in contact with russia. he believes it. however, there should be an investigation to prove otherwise. he would want him to step down. [ indiscernible ] decision. >> if he himself is the subject of an investigation of course he i don'see any purpose or reason for doing this. >> ryan said he believes democrats are make a bigger

deal out of this than there needs to be. more of trump's cabinet positions are filling up. ben carson is now the second of housing and urban development. the senate confirmed carson a few hours ago as the secretary of housing and urban development, 58-41. fears of uncertainty continue over president trump's immigration enforcement. kpix 5's anne makovec shows us why this is causing fewer undocumented immigrants students to reach out for financial aid. >> reporter: applications for financial aids under the "dream act" are down 40% over last year according to the california community college system and that's over fears that the information could be handed to the feds. >> they should apply regardless of fears. >> reporter: sf state opened a new office this year, the dream resource center, to help undocumented students. a lot of it is fear in the

future of daca "deferred action for childhood arrivals." it was an executive order by president obama protecting immigrants whose families brought them to the u.s. illegally as children. daca information is forwarded to the federal government. >> students put in both their information and sometimes even their parents information. >> reporter: when applying for college under the california "dream act" a student's application stays in state. but there's mistrust after president trump vowed to repeal daca on the campaign trail. he has recently indicated he might be softening. >> some absolutely incredible kids, i would say mostly, they were brought here in such a way -- it's a very, very tough subject. we are going to deal with daca with heart. >> reporter: as far as today's deadline, renewal of cal grants will be accepted after today

but first time applications are due by midnight. anne makovec, kpix 5. pg&e is reporting rolling blackouts in san francisco. the outage is tripping false fire alarms that they are now busy responding to. no word from pg&e on why this is happening. new at noon, snapchat went public. they are now snap inc. they rang the opening bell at the new york stock exchange this morning and already stocks are soaring. the company is now valued at a whopping $22 billion and for one bay area school, that could mean a huge payout. here's kpix 5's kiet do. >> reporter: yeah. it is the middle of the schoolday here at st. francis high school in mountain view and right now, administrators are holding a private meeting sharing the details and good news with staff and faculty that on paper at least they have just made millions of dollars. just like anyone who comes into allotted of money questions are swirling about what happens next. snapchat is having a spectacular ipo so far opening at $17 soaring to $24 a share.

snap inc. is currently valued at $33 billion which puts it on par with target and the marriott hotel chain. the story with st. francis hooligan five years ago back in 2012. a parent at the school by the name of barry eggers convinced the school's investment fund to get in early. who is this parent? it turns out he is a partner at light speed ventures who is also an early investor of snapchat. and a blog post he says he came home from work one day five years ago and saw kids laughing and engrossed in this new app called snapchat. it's unclear how much st. francis put in but one report by yahoo finance says they bought $15,000 worth of shares early on which are now worth tens of millions of dollars today but according to the information, that is a san francisco-based tech news site, the school has a much larger stake, $15.2 million worth of early shares which could mean they are worth today $3.2 billion. we are hoping to get some kind of clarity from st. francis today. they are expected to make some statement to the media in the

on in this newscast. >> thank you. president trump pumped the brakes on caltrain upgrades but the agency is optimistic that they will soon get the green light to move forward. kpix 5's maria medina is in san carlos with an update on the delays. >> reporter: contractors for caltrain were supposed to start electrifying caltrain yesterday. but now there's a four-month delay. the trump administration decided to pull the plug on the project delaying nearly $650 million in federal funds until the president can consider the $2 billion project as part of his budget plan. now, caltrain talked about it today in their regular board meeting. but a spokesman says they believe the president will okay the money for the upgrade. >> this is a shovel-ready as it gets. so if the administration is interested in moving forward with, um, plans to improve the economic competitiveness of our nation and, um, and create jobs, um, around the country, this project fits that bill. >> reporter: he says if a grant doesn't itwould be an unprecedented move by the president because no other

project like it that's met the grant requirements has been rejected. caltrain is hoping this delay will buy them time to convince the president to spend money on the project. also want to mention republican congressmen in california are opposed to the project saying an electrified caltrain would eventually become part of the state's high-speed rail system. and they don't want any more taxpayer money going to pay for high-speed rail. by switching to electric, caltrain says it's going to boost ridership by thousands and create thousands of jobs not just in california but across the country. in san carlos, maria medina, kpix 5. pg&e is feeling the pressure to fix its billing structure with soaring power bills. jerry hill from san mateo had his staff research why bills have skyrocketed recently finding it was a combination of pg&e's new rate structure, flaws in how usage is tracked, higher power rates, and cold winter. he says the company is not prioritizing its customers, writing the research shows that the most vulnerable are being

hit the hardest at a time when they need heating the most. the utility company says it's reviewing the senator's study. the city attorney for san francisco has filed a lawsuit against hertz rent-a-car. the issue is centered on plate pass, the system hertz uses for bridge tolls. a lawsuit claims customers were essentially forced into paying for it and many of them were hit with hidden charges weeks later even if they didn't drive on any toll bridges. hertz has no comment. coming up, california fisherman catch a baby great white shark. why they are now being investigated by authorities. >> and deadly storms make their way through the east coast. the damage it's leaving in its path and how people are bracing for more. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

now to a developing story in oakland. an off-duty cop escaped injury at after being shot at by a suspect along 880 last night. the gunman escaped. no arrests. a busted fire hydrant sprayed water for hours in belmont this morning. a u-haul truck slammed into the fire hydrant at harbor and industrial at 3:15. it created quite a mess for drivers. crews were eventually able to turn the water off and get traffic moving again. parts of california are among the nation's highest risk areas for a damaging earthquake this year according to the usgs. they say the area near gilroy has the highest natural risk of a big quake because it lies on the san andreas fault. it is the most active fault in the country. they also say southern california has a lesser risk but could still have a damaging quake. some fishermen are in hot water today after their big catch landed them in big

trouble. >> cell phone video showing a cheering crowd as the men reel in what appears to be a juvenile great white. the problem is, great whites are protected under state and federal laws. an investigation is under way into whether the fishermen wanted to catch that shark intentionally or whether they caught it accidentally. >> when we see video like that that's kind of disturbing. things with big jaws and big teeth would normally be able to bite through most lines but they won't bite through that. >> if a fisherman does catch a great white, they are required to release it immediately or face fines up to $10,000. recovery efforts are under way right now after deadly storms swept across the nation's midsection. the violent weather is blamed for at least five deaths. in chattanooga tennesee, several people died. >> reporter: the storm

stretched hundreds of mails. hail slammed alabama. heavy rain flooded part of ohio. strong winds blew the roof off this car dealership in north carolina and toppled trees in tennessee, crushing this mobile home and injuring a young boy inside. parts of the midwest are still cleaning up after the storm system roared through the area tuesday night. more than 100 homes in perryville, missouri were damaged with many destroyed. from above, you can see the scope of the damage in ottawa, illinois, 80 miles outside of chicago. in the small village of naplate nearby, dozens of homes were also damaged, some leveled. >> the windows are busted out. there's debris everywhere in the house. the only room that didn't get touched by the grace of god is my room and my daughter's. the rest is gone. [ crying ] >> reporter: tornadoes that swept through these communities packed winds up to 155 miles an hour. one person was killed by a fallen tree limb more than a dozen others injured.
