pay their respects to deputy michael foley. a procession traveled through the streets of concord and made its way under a giant american flag hoisted up by two fire trucks. kpix 5's jackie ward is live in concord, where a memorial service is under way now. jackie. >> reporter: ladies, this is the first line of duty death for the alameda county sheriff's office in 18 years. sergeant ray kelly says you never quite get over days like this. and today's services are still under way here. hundreds of officers from across the country are here to pay respects to deputy mike foley. the services started with a procession that began at the oakmont mortuary at lafayette and continued to the concord pavilion. he died from head injuries he got when he was hit by a bus at the santa rita jail in dublin last week. he had been a deputy for 10 years and prior to that, was with the concord police department for 29 years. he died last thursday at john muir medical center. >> anybody that can do 40 years

in a job like this and still get up every morning and be motivated and energetic and the hardest working guy on your shift, pretty amazing character. it just goes to show, you know, the type of person he was. >> reporter: deputy foley actually grew up in concord. he was a star athlete at concord high school. he was considered to be a great presence by many in the community. he is survived by his wife, daughter and son. his son is 18 years old and has already said he wants to pursue a career in law enforcement just like his dad and grandfather. a reception with the family and his friends and all of these officers will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. at the senior center. in concord, jackie ward, kpix 5. new at noon, an arrest in at least eight threats made against jewish community centers across the country. juan thompson was arrested in st. louis and is expected to appear in federal court this afternoon. thompson faces charges of cyber stalking. authorities say he made threats in his name and his ex-

girlfriend's name as part of a plot to harass and villify the woman. earlier today, the feds searched through his mother's home while his stepfather went outside to speak to reporters. >> they saying it him. >> you don't think it was him? >> i don't know. i don't know nothing right now. >> florida congresswoman debbie wasserman debbie wasserman schultz says more suspects might be behind similar threats. >> i have been assured by the fbi, local law enforcement and all the law enforcement involved in these investigations that this has been given the highest priority. >> federal officials have been investigating 122 bomb threats called in to nearly 100 jewish sites. it's not clear whether thompson is involved in the threats in the bay area. president trump touched down in florida this morning for the first time since becoming president, he is

visiting a school and it's a private catholic school in orlando. it comes days after the president called on congress to pass an education bill that funds school choice. meanwhile, president trump is blaming democrats for the controversy surrounding his attorney general jeff sessions. cbs reporter weijia jang shows us the number of trump aides with connections to russia is growing. >> reporter: president trump is standing by his attorney general after jeff sessions recused himself from investigating links between trump campaign officials and russia. during confirmation hearings, sessions did not disclose he had had two meetings with russia's ambassador in the last year. >> and in retrospect, i should have slowed down and said but i did meet one russian official a couple times. >> reporter: the president issued a statement saying jeff sessions is an honest man. he could have stated his response more accurately but it was clearly not intentional. he then accused the democrats of carrying out a total witch hunt. some democrats say sessions

lied under oath and needs to resign. now we know jared kushner the president's son-in-law and senior adviser is on a growing list of trump associates who met with the russian ambassador. that list includes former national security adviser michael flynn. attorney general sessions and former campaign adviser carter page. congress is conducting its own investigation and some lawmakers say the fbi director is withholding information. >> we can't do a complete job unless the director is willing to discuss anything that they are investigating. >> reporter: weijia jang, cbs news, the white house. >> russia's foreign minister echoed president trump's statement today calling the investigation a witch hunt. a developing story now. vice president mike pence has not responded to reports that he used a private email server while working as governor of indiana. that is according to the indianapolis star which also reported that the account he used was hacked. the vp arrived in wisconsin this morning. he will be meeting with small business owners. we have just learned that

two lanes on highway 101 in palo alto will not re-open until at least later this afternoon. a dump truck driver slammed into an overpass and cracked it causing that closure. kpix 5's maria medina tells us why it is taking so long to open the lanes. >> reporter: what a mess left behind by this accident. a 27-foot crack on that overpass behind me. you can see caltrans crews are doing repair work now. but the question is, why did it take them about a half day? it's a mistake that cracked an overpass and caused the morning commute to come to a crawl. chp officers say the driver of this dump truck forgot to lower the dumping bed after he left the nearby construction site before hitting the overpass near embarcadero road. >> it created a 27-foot crack in the overcrossing itself. >> reporter: the crack above southbound 101 forcing the chp to shut down the two left lanes

and the northbound off-ramp. [ beep beep ] >> reporter: but the debris, fluid from the truck and the truck itself cleared from 101 soon after. remember, this happened just before 11 p.m. last night. so why was the estimated time to open up the lanes more than 12 hours later at noon? >> we are waiting on the caltrans engineer from sacramento. >> reporter: chp told us caltrans crews on scene were waiting for a structural engineer two hours away. it's unknown when they were alerted and why they couldn't arrive earlier. >> they are coming from sacramento and it is a commute day. so it's going to take a while. >> reporter: the engineer finally arrived and repairs began just before 10 a.m. a slower commute but the wait worth it they say to make sure all is safe. >> we just want to make sure that it is safe to -- for people to drive on and under. >> reporter: and we put in a couple calls to caltrans but we are still waiting to hear back from them. as for the driver, we're told he was taken to a nearby

hospital with minor injuries. on highway 101 in palo alto, maria medina, kpix 5. much-needed relief today for an east bay community cut off by recent storms. officials have just temporarily restored running water for people living near morgan territory. this is on the northeast side of mount diablo about 16 miles from brentwood. last week, a mudslide caused a water line to rupture. 90 homes have been without water since then. but officials say they had to wait for a mudslide to stop moving before they could make repairs to the line. the contra costa water district is telling people to hold off on drinking the water while they test it. today emergency workers started delivering critical supplies to people in big sur by helicopter. the community has been cut off because of the highway 1 and pfeiffer canyon bridge closures. from the "sky drone 5" footage you can see the damage there caused by recent storms, including a giant crack that runs across the bridge. a local lawmaker wants to

improve california's response to flood emergencies and fix our broken dams. representative jerry mcenerney has introduced the emergency flood response act. he says the recent storms have taken their toll on the state's infrastructure including the oroville. it would create funding for levees and set aside money for another flood emergency. roberta has the forecast. >> we have more rain coming this way but we do not anticipate any flooding around the bay area. right now, it's our live hi-def doppler radar. you see a little bit of green on the screen over the mount hamilton area. that's just some ground clutter on our radar site. otherwise, you have a gray slate outside right now. we have clouds a high, thin veil over the city of san francisco. these are all crowds that are increasing across the bay area temperatures still on the cooler side. here's what you can expect. increasing cloud cover, we'll have some scattered showers over the weekend. we will have some warmer conditions by next week. and here's the setup for you.

we have been under the influence of that huge dome of high pressure. it is now breaking down due to that area of low pressure to the north that is just falling out of the gulf of alaska bringing in cooler air mass, as well. we are going to track the rain together. i'll tell you exactly when to expect the raindrops and just how much to expect as well and, anne, that's coming up later in the newscast. >> thank you. the man arrested for taking part in a shootout on the streets of san leandro has been charged. marcus jones now faces several felonies for the weapons and drugs police say were found in his apartment when he was arrested. but he has not yet been charged for the shootout itself. he is accused of shooting from his car at another car in an afternoon gunfight back in november. one of the cars then hit an elderly couple who was driving. both were seriously injured and are still recovering. police believe they now have both shooters in custody. the widow of the orlando nightclub shooter will remain in jail at least for now. her request for bail was put on

hold. a california judge ordered noor salman to be released on bail earlier this week. but a federal judge says more arguments need to be heard before that can happen. she is currently in an east bay jail. she is accused of helping her husband, omar mateen, scout locations before the attack that killed 49 people last year. ♪[ music ] coming up, parents of a teen who died in police custody want the public to see video of his arrest. what they are saying about what led up to their son's death. >> and the tsa is coming up with a better way to screen travelers. the new machines that will give agents a closer look inside your luggage. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

we have to warn you, you may find it disturbing. after a ten-mile chase, harris county sheriff's deputies approached nicholas' truck. deputies smashed his window and tasered him before pulling him out of the truck and throwing him to the ground. and at one point, you can see a deputy put his knee on the back of the teen's neck. a few minutes later they saw he had stopped moving. >> you feel as though your son was executed. yes. >> because? >> because i think that they were really rough with him. i think they were brutal to him. >> his autopsy report cites several factors as the cause of death, use of a stun gun, compression to the neck and torso and methamphetamine intoxication. the sheriff's office is not commenting on the investigation. a fast-moving fire tore through several homes and buildings in new jersey this morning. the fire broke out just after 5:00 in a hotel in ocean grove. it quickly engulfed the nearby

condo complex gutting four homes before damaging two other structures. two firefighters were hurt. no word on how badly. he cause is under investi gation. new at noon, it is being called a game changer for travelers. the tsa testing out new equipment that could make getting through airports much easier and safer. the new scanner produces 3d images and provides side by side views on a touchscreen that can zoom and spin the carry-on bag. the machines can even detect explosives in laptops, liquids and gels using technology similar to a "ct" scan. >> the "ct" scan machines to a people means radiation. and i don't want to get radiated on the way to my flight. >> so these produce the same amount of radiation as the system at the checkpoint now. there's no difference. >> tsa and american airlines expect the test of the new scanners will be in major airports this summer. an east oakland hotel is accused of violating state

labor laws and the city's minimum wage ordinance. the city has filed a lawsuit against quality inn, which is an affiliate of choice hotels. it alleges the owner refused to pay overtime or offer sick leave to several housekeepers and provided inaccurate wage statements to workers. a spokesman for choice hotels says it does not own or operate the quality inn, in oakland and therefore cannot interfere in the terms and conditions established by hotel owners. right now, the assembly housing committee is holding a hearing to address the affordability crisis across the state. the committee wants to explore how to make housing more affordable here in the bay area and around the state. they plan to lay out the challenges and ideas for increasing housing production. big sinkhole that nearly swallowed a car in oakland last month probably won't be fixed until may. the city says it's not as simple as just patching up the 25 by 25-foot hole on east 27th street. pg&e, east bay m.u.d. and the county all have their

own repairs to make to gas, sewer and storm drain lines. >> we have seen so many potholes on the local roads after this wild winter we have had so far. roberta? >> i think i was earlier we had in chicago, two seasons, winter and construction. that's because of all the potholes. we have more rain in the bay area in the forecast. our live hi-def doppler radar not picking up any precipitation from the incoming system. but we are picking up the cloud cover. increasing clouds across the bay area. breezy out there. that's the scene looking from our kpix 5 studios. i found this interesting. i'm taking a look out towards lake curry which appears very muddy from the local rain but look at this here. i don't know if it's a fire or somebody's burning something. but something definitely is going on in the mount vaca area. right now we have air temperatures in the 50s and in the low 60s. it will be slightly cooler today than when we topped off at 72 degrees in santa cruz on

thursday. three things to remember. we'll be all clouded up by later this afternoon. showers light rain crosses the golden gate bridge by about 6:00 tomorrow evening. scattered showers will continue into our sunday. let's get to it. high pressure, this has been in command for several days. big huge dome of diverting the storm track to the north but now it's breaking down due to that right there an area of low pressure dropping out of the gulf of alaska pulling down cooler air. and in turn, making our winds rotate around to the west, more of an onshore push 10 to 20. increasing clouds for the evening commute. here comes the first band of rain showers just dancing around the north bay tomorrow morning and then the front slides across the central bay in a southerly fashion towards the early evening hours. behind it, a lot of instability. so we will have spotty scattered showers during our sunday and now even lingering into monday morning. but it's only about a quarter to .3" of rain in the urban areas. in the higher elevations, maybe

in high school, woke up one morning and said there's something wrong with the eye. i brought these photos. it wasn't her eye so much as her face was swelling on the right side. >> oh. that's a big difference. >> exactly. and then this last photo is about a couple of hours after treatment. and so i see this often at this time of the year in wintertime and i believe it's usually a spider bite. most likely when you wake up and find your dog's face swollen, spider bite is high on my list. but other reasons could be bee stings and contact allergy where they have contacted some plant material that they have had a reaction to. but regardless, you want to contact your vet immediately because as you notice in the photos, it gets seriously worse -- [ laughter ] -- it gets worse very quickly. okay, hold on. sit down, please. >> it's okay.
