[ yelling ] [ bleep ] [ yelling ] >> developing news. anger boiling over. fights break out between anti- trump protesters and the president's supporters. i'm juliette goodrich. >> and i'm brian hackney. we were there at that fight. pretty intense out there. >> reporter: yeah. one-to-one the folks watching at home. you're going to see some very violent footage. what we saw was not democracy. what we saw pretty much all violence. >> [ yelling ] >> reporter: it was a free-for- all.

trump supporters and anti-trump protesters going at it. sometimes it was one-on-one. other times large groups of people punching and kicking and hitting each other with sticks. >> [ yelling ] hey! hey! >> [ yelling ] break it up. >> reporter: bloody noses and faces. there were so many fights, we lost count. police officers stood by and watched as fight after fight after fight broke out between both sides. >> feel like they should have done something a bit sooner. there's been three or four fights. several people have been pepper sprayed. >> reporter: others through some kind of smoke canister into the crowd. someone set a fireworks. >> this is a sad day.

we're better than this. >> reporter: yeah. so on the trump supporter side we saw about 60 to 70 people. on the anti-trump side, we saw about 150 to 200. some of those including anarchists, folks with ski masks and all that. we don't have exact number of folks injured. but i saw quite a few people, at least four to five people with bloody faces and a lot more with bruises to their faces and hands and all. so far we saw people detained by police officers but for the most part officers kind of kept back and kind of gave a hands- off approach. juliet? >> reporter: we've seen that stands before. they also didn't move in during the violent cal protest. what are they saying about not moving in? >> reporter: yeah. they're not giving us an answer. but they're just kind of staying at the edge of the park. we're thinking maybe they're concerned about their own safety. maybe they don't want to

instigate or cause the crowd to get more violent. for the most part they are just kind of watching the fights happening. so there are a lot of folks upset and frustrated that they weren't moving in to break up the fight. exactly why, is that their strategy? we're not exactly sure. they haven't said much about that. >> all right. da lin, thank you. trump supporters held rallies at dozens of cities with police trying to limit confrontations with counter protesters. in texas several hundred gathered at the statehouse in austin. in the nation's capital lane -- they listened to speakers and marched to a park near the white house. in new york city people braved the cold and student groups near trump tower. >> we are going to support him from the beginning, right to the end. >> wants to make america great again and he will do that. >> he wants to be our president. not the world's president. we don't need that. we need someone to take care of

us at home! >> the rallies were meant as a show of unity against what they call a seducers fringe trying to sabotage the president. president trump is working from his home in florida as correspondent brook silva-braga shows us he's also now accusing president obama of tapping his phones. >> reporter: the president waved to supporters in palm beach florida hours after mr. trump fired off four tweets accusing then president obama of wiretapping trump last october. how low has president obama gone to tap my phones during the very sacred election process? this is nixon and watergate. bad. >> president trump woke -- wrote that the wiretapping happened here but offered no evidence. >> reporter: the tweets follow a story published on breitbart detailing similar claims of obama surveilling trump. a spokesman for the former president responded in part

neither president obama nor any white house official ever ordered surveillance on any u.s. citizen. any suggestion otherwise is simply false. >> it would be the biggest political scandal since watergate. >> reporter: at a raucous town hall event republican senator lindsey graham said illegally wiretapping trump would be troubling. but he said it would be equally concerning if trump was legally surveilled. that could mean there had been evidence of activity between the trump campaign and foreign governments. >> it's my job as united states senator to get to the bottom of this. >> reporter: attorney general jeff sessions who recently recused himself from the investigation of links between the trump campaign and russia also traveled to florida for dinner with the president. brook silva-braga, cbs news, new york. new at 5:00, tenants have had enough. protesting a rent hike in what they call some -- slum-like conditions. kpix 5's jackie ward is live in hillsboro. >> reporter: we are in the neighborhood of that landlord

who owns the apartment complex. tenants came down here all the way from concord to voice their complaints against brian leon. >> what to do we want? >> lower rent! >> reporter: for two years this group of tenants has been fighting for a better place to live. >> suffering from bedbugs within our unit. roaches and mold. >> reporter: after all those months of trying to get landlord brian leung's attention, they are now here where they can't be denied. his doorstep. >> show your face! show your face! >> they've written several complaints to management and teamed up with the alliance of californians for community empowerment. >> reporter: but none of their concerns has been addressed. this is what they want fixed. moldy ripped up carpets that have been destroyed by water and moisture over the years. and mold bordering the windows. a result of water that drips down from the apartment above.

through a translator this grandmother explains how her rent continues to climb yet the landlord still ignores her problems. >> yeah. of course it's a health risk. we have little kids here. no matter how much we clean it just keeps coming back. the water and mold. >> reporter: today these tenants said enough. and left a letter on his door. >> we just want to talk and let them know. >> reporter: when the tenants left, we actually tried to get mr. lou young to speak to us. he did not. a representative from ace told us that they will continue to defend the rights of these tenants and many like them all across the bay area. they say there's still a lot of fight left to go. jackie ward, kbs five. >> thank you. two violent crashes leave one dead and three hurt overnight. a big league careened off 101 about 8:00 a.m. it overturned landing on bayshore boulevard. three people suffered minor injuries. a crash in menlo park was

fatal. the menlo park fire department says the driver ran off the road near the facebook campus. slamming into the concrete culvert pipe. the driver died at the scene. investigator's were looking into why the unprotected drainage pipe was left there. a vallejo man is in custody suspected of murder. police say robert welcome in was wanted in a fatal stabbing. michael night was rushed to the hospital but died the next day. he was picked up last night without incident. police have confiscated knives and a realistic bb gun while investigating an unconscious driver. the man was spotted passed out in the car on columbus parkway last night. besides the gun and knives officers found a canister of suspected heroine. the 27-year-old venetia man was arrested. still to come, the huge mess lingering from the san jose floods. you'll hear from volunteers hitting the streets to mop up that mess. we will take you back out

of survival the annual conference took place he golden gate c in san francisco hundreds affected by breast cancer gathered to share stories. the annual conference took place at the golden gate club. distinguished doctors from ucsf and stanford shared the latest research findings. breast cancer survivors were invited to speak of. we talked to one of them who was diagnosed at the age of 30. >> a lot of people don't associate young survivors with breast cancer. you don't think people under 45 get breast cancer. i'm living proof that they do. what i'm trying to share is more an attitude or the choice of having the right attitude when it comes to any type of difficult situations such as

cancer treatment and fear of death and so on. so what i like to share which is more my attitude on things and hopefully touching other people to feel the same way. >> cancer prevention institute of california organized the event. volunteers are cleaning up the big mess left behind by the floods. 350 people out in force. in city parks removing mud, branches. seems like there's no end. this area in kelly park was under six feet of water. as the park manager told us the hardest part of recovery is finding the resources to do it. >> that's why having the volunteers is so important to us. it's been -- it's hard for me to talk about it without getting emotional. without their help, it's an overwhelming task for staff to try to do with our own resources. >> the city is organizing more volunteer projects tomorrow. what a difference a little dry weather makes. at anderson reservoir, on the left was a week and a half ago, on the right today.

that's where we want to go back out live to da lin in berkley. >> fights broke out between people demonstrating for and against prop. what's the latest of police and arrests? >> reporter: well, still working out here to monitor the scene. but let's pan over there. you can see police officers. dozens and dozens of police officers watching outside at the park. but they're not moving in.

that's been their strategy all day long. letting protesters and basically anti-trump protesters and trump supporters fighting it out in the park. which is kind of strange from an outsider perspective looking in. but there are just fights after -- just so many fights at this park. show you some video we shot earlier. there were so many fights we lost count. sometimes it was one-on-one. other times large groups of people punching and kicking. and hitting each other with sticks. we have people with bloody noses and faces. some instigators used pepper spray. others through some kind of smoke canister. someone set off fireworks. it was a free-for-all. police officers we saw stood by and kind of watched as the fights were breaking out. we don't know how many people have been injured. we saw for people with bloody faces and many more with bruises. also police detained two people. let's come back live now.

much smaller crowd here this afternoon. this started around 1:30 or so. it's almost 5:15. so a smaller crowd but at one point you had about 60 to 70 trump supporters and roughly 200 anti-trump protesters. again, smaller crowd but still very active. we'll be sure to monitor this and give you guys updates. live in berkley, i'm da lin. >> one more question. i know police were holding back but they did make some arrests. right? >> reporter: right. one of the arrests that was funny. i was watching it. two people fighting. and the guy they arrested actually ran into the police officer and that was the reason why they cuffed that guy. so it was funny. it wasn't them -- we have video of that. of the guy fighting and running into the police officer. that's when they cuffed this one guy. another guy i saw they detained not sure how that all happened. but again their approach is pretty hands-off.

you have to understand, there are a lot of violent folks in there. police officers have to be mindful of their own safety as well. and also police officers don't want to instigate and cause any more problems. so that could perhaps be their strategy. >> absolutely. there is a strategy. da, thank you. onto the far more tranquil topic of whether right now. some light rain moving in around the bay area. more steady overnight. a weak cold front makes its way down from northern california. fairly slick and bleak out there at sfo. winds are picking up. 31-mile an hour gusts. at concord the winds are up to 28. blustery tonight. went too. more rain overnight tonight. than we had today. many locations didn't see much of anything. right now at moffett field, sunny skies. thunderstorms popped over the northern part of the sierra. there is no from all this as well. high-def doppler showing the action confined to the north

bay. between petaluma and rohnert park. not much on the peninsula. not yet anyway. futurecast will show you you should not be lulled into a false sense of security. we'll get showers coming into the bay area through tomorrow night. lingering to monday morning. we go the other direction and warm up by midweek. in the meantime we have that. cold front that moves through. by 10:00 you can see it's fairly fast-moving but when it rains, it will pour tonight. just briefly. by 10:00 the band of heavy showers extend from livermore in east through the santa cruz mountains and out towards davenport on the shoreline down there. widely scattered activity tomorrow morning. some showers and some like today. variable clouds and scattered showers. true for much of the day. and into tomorrow night before we get -- begin to clear it out monday. interesting thing about this winter weather advisory. ultraviolet color. that shows you where the warnings are.

this is a critical time. the cal bears have been struggling down the stretch losing four of five. senior day in boulder this afternoon. second half of the game, tied at 30. the bears come up and knock down the jumper giving cal the lead. byrd had 11. the buffaloes up by three with 30 seconds left. derrick white nearly loses the ball. but he throws up a prayer as the shot clock expires. it happened to go in for the dagger. the buffs win it 54-46 as the ncaa tournament hopes are all but done. jerod haase and stanford finishing their season in utah. tied at 48. the cardinal dorian pickens drives in. two of his 22 give stanford the lead. three minutes left, the utes are leading by four. lorenzo bonhomme comes up with a steal and goes all the way. he led all scorers with 26. utah wins 67-59. stanford finishes 6-12.

arizona state trying to stop arizona from clinching a share of the pac-12 title. the seventh-ranked wildcats leading by 10. allonzo trier drives in for the layup to make it a 12-point lead. the cats started the second half on a 14-3 run. they win 73-60 two clinch a share of the conference championship. dana altman and oregon trying to take a share of that title as well. second half, the ducks leading oregon state by 10. dylan brooks drives and draws the foul. free throw made it 41-28. they win 80-592 clinch a share of the regular-season title. the ducks will be the number 1 seed in next week's conference tournament. with colin kaepernick officially opting out of his contract and becoming a free agent, the 49ers have zero quarterbacks under contract. now up to john lynch and kyle shanahan to find their next signal caller. >> i don't think you need to be
