juliette goodrich, kpix 5 news. >> live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. >> now at 5:00 p.m. the sunday storm that is packing a punch, a triple threat dropping rain, hail and snow in the bay area. and good evening. we start with storm watch coverage. most of the bay area getting hit with hail today. san francisco hail was pounding down this afternoon near twin peak. >> similar seen in san ramon today. also hail coming down in sonoma today along with many other locations in the north bay. >> much of the storm is focused on the sierra. hammered with snow, still coming down. near tahoe. the snow and wind making for

brutal conditions. interstate 80 closed for 18 hours till 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. now open to cars with chained but closed to big rigs. a slow drive over donner pass. >> and these pictures give you a good idea how much snow fell. this is 2:00 p.m. on the right is 2:00 p.m. today. you can see how much has piled up. a live look over san francisco bay. some sun peaking out. showers over night. and you can see that on doppler. showers around a low that is north and west of the bay area and the purple stuff on the top part of the screen, that is snow in the higher elevations. below you can see the heavier cells towards 101 in san francisco. and then in the east bay. that snow, mount hamilton and good rain still coming down and

over in the peninsula and through south bay showers ringing much of the south bay area. we will have the forecast in a few minutes. you don't have to go to the sierra nevada to enjoy the snow. a bicycle rider's ride cut short by the powder and a winter wonderland on mount hamilton. we sent sky drone 5 to check it out. . >> reporter: in the middle of a snow flurry. this is what it feels like for those who experienced it on the ground. >> like -- like -- 30 minutes ago. and then it was all snowing. and i was surprised. i am, like, what? >> reporter: when he left watsonville it was still a bright sunny day. but snow in the summit and

flurries forced them to turn around. >> i just wanted to be out of the house. if the road is blocked for some reason, probably for our safety. that is my most concern. >> reporter: this winter storm brought everything. periods of heavy rain, hail and on the highest peaks snow but getting to lake observatory was a challenge. these images of a mudslide. one of the only two ways to get to the observatory. a winter with too much water, in all its vary forms. devin fehely, kpix 5. fire ripped through a motel displacing dozens. the fire larms never went -- alarms never went off. it quickly spread destroying 16

units. firefighters tell us three people had to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation and 40 people lost their homes. red cross was on site it help. the fire was contained in an hour. firefighters rescued a cat but they are still looking for pets. man is in the hospital after he was shot. 11:30 p.m. last night police got calls about a shooting. they say they arrived on scene to find a man who pulled out a gun and pointed it at an officer and that is when they shot him. they discovered the suspect earlier shot a man and a girl. the girl has been released. the male victim and suspect are in stable condition. police in berkeley standing on the sidelines during the pro- trump rally. many left bruised and bloodied.

now many are wondering why officers didn't break up the fights. jessica flores explains. >> reporter: the vilance lasted for hours in -- violence lasted for hours in downtown berkeley. they are asking why the police didn't move in sooner. police in riot gear watched as fight after fight broke out in downtown berkeley. demonstrators clashing. left beaten and bloodied before police arrested 10 people. >> should have done something sooner. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: today more questions about the police officer's hands off approach. >> it looks bad. i acknowledge that. >> reporter: howard jordan spoke to us on the phone after watching video of the violence. >> a very volatile and complex

situation. >> reporter: police denied kpix 5's interview request but the department said every attempt was nide intercede and identify victims and suspects. because of the nature of the crowd police are not always able to make immediate arrest without inciting violence or injuring by standers. >> having people assaulted and hurt is a concern when you have officers that could have prevented that. >> reporter: police shared these pictures of weapons. bats, clubs, even a knife. berkeley police did arrest four people with assault with a deadly weapon and they are asking the public's help in identifying anybody behind the violence. >> jessica flores, thank you. president trump said this morning thank you for had great

rallies across the country. tremendous support make america great again. one day after president trump accused former president obama of wire tapping his phones the white house is asking for help looking into the allegations. >> reporter: president trump boarded air force one heading back to washington, he called on congress to investigation. he accused president obama of wire tapping him before the election but provided no evidence. trump called the surveillance a fact but a spokeswoman described it as a possibility. >> if this happened -- if -- if -- [ talking at the same time ] >> why is the president saying it did happen? >> he is going off of information that led him to believe this is a very real potential.

>> reporter: james clapper during the surveillance said if the fbi conducted a wire tap he would have known. >> there was no such wire tap activity. >> reporter: democrats suggested trump was trying to avert attention from questions about his campaign's contact with russian officials. attorney general jeff sessions is expected to find testimony monday acknowledging conversations with the russian ambassador that he failed to disclose during his confirmimation. >> fbi director james comey asked the justice department to reject president trump's claims about wire tapping. still to come, giving back. the restaurants chipping into help hundreds of victims in the san jose flood.

active wildfire season. fire officials say the ext water has caused more all the rain this winter could make for an active wildfire season. the extra water caused more vegetation ogrow which -- to grow which would cause wildfires to spread more rapidly. they are preparing with emergency grills. they -- drills. they say it is important to remember we are climbing out of a 5 year drought. >> we have 102 million dead trees in the sierra nevada. south of fresno. because of the drought and the bark beetle. that fuel is still there. >> the fire center is predicting a late start to the fire season because of the rain and snow we have been getting.

and we have more rain on the way and more snow. you forget from time to time we live in mountain territory. above 4,000 feet. we got a dusting of snow today. as we look through a lens wetly at sfo. showers moved through an hour ago. still plenty of showers you will see in a minute around the bay area and more tonight. concord 48 degrees right now. oakland 53 degrees. 52, sorry. livermore 47. winds gusty, mountain view 23 miles per hour. and 24 miles per hour gusts through the san bruno gap. cold air moving over the area with showers from time to time. good cell. showers coming down in marin county and then come over to the east bay -- well, southeast

bay. mission san jose district. which is fremont. long story. wild colors. snow by mount hamilton. devin fehely flew sky drone 5 over today. doppler, south bay, you can see scattered showers but it is coming down pretty good. that sets the tone for the night. possibility of hail continues tonight. and right through early tomorrow. don't dry out till tomorrow afternoon. as the low pressure begins to move inland. and a ridge of high pressure will replace it by tuesday. we still stand chances of showers into the evening hours. future cast, weak front on the way. post frontal stuff. you know when you drop a rock into a pond, there is ripples, the rock was the low, now we are getting the ripples. in the atmosphere. that will continue to fire up showers through monday morning. and you can see scattered showers coming in tomorrow morning. and lingering through much of

stay tuned on that. >> all right. san jose community is helping clean up the mess left behind by last month's flooding. volunteers were out at kelly park today clearing out debris. a team from orchard supply is using $30,000 worth of donated equipment to clean up the mess. >> tens of thousands of people are being held out of the park and the quicker we get it back up to speed the quicker the community can enjoy it again. >> restaurants are helping to raise money for those effected by the flood. 25 restaurants took part in family flood relief day. a portion of the proceeds go towards recovery efforts. >> we want to donate back. so many people lost so much during the floods. we feel as a community we get to give back. >> today's event was consered by the -- consered boy -- sponsored by the san jose sharks.
