it got to our room, fast. >> reporter: he woke up this morning to screams and then the flames. >> my hero. he woke us up. got us out. >> reporter: his mother said he woke up the family giving them enough time to grab a few belongings. >> building was on fire. knocked on people's doors to make sure they got out. >> the fire at the travel inn happened just before 9:30 a.m. it started in a room on the first floor, spreading to h second floor -- spreading to the second floor and several of the three dozen victims claim their smoke alarms didn't work. >> no [ bleep ] nothing. >> reporter: a man who worked for the motel told kpix 5 every room had a working smoke alarm. he refused to answer any other questions. >> reporter: what is your name?

>> just go. just go. >> reporter: one of the workers told me -- >> go get him and bring him to me. tell me he is lying. they had to drag my wheelchair down the stairs. we didn't have an exit to get me out. >> reporter: like many victims they say they lost pretty much what little they had. >> i am alive. that is the best thing. i am alive. >> reporter: but it could have ended much worse. >> i am not worried about nothing but i am alive. you know? >> we don't have much left. you know? but i have my kids. i have my animals. >> reporter: maria medina, kpix 5. >> three people went to the hospital with smoke inhalation. several animals are missing. one is confirmed dead. a fire spokesperson says they are investigating the cause of the fire including whether the smoke alarms were working. the other big story tonight the wild weather today. a lot of rain and a lot of hail. coming down hard -- coming down

hard in san francisco today. a similar seen in san ramon. hail about the size of rice grains. hail also blanketed livermore. that pickup truck was covered in it. and take a look at the patio. the ground white from all the hail. here is what it looked like up close. fremont earlier today. not a good day for a bike ride either. >> this is stupid. >> he posted that video as he walked his bike near the summit. the snow came down hard on mount hamilton. devin fehely couldn't even make it up to the top. >> reporter: this is what it looks like to fly sky drone 5 in the middle of a snow flurry.

>> all snowing. and i was deeply surprised. and i am, like, what? >> reporter: when he left watsonville to visit lake observatory it was a bright sunny day but snow in the summit and flurries forced them to turn around. >> i wanted to be out of the house. if the road is blocked, probably for our safety. that is my most concern. >> reporter: this storm brought everything. periods of heavy rain. hail and on the highest peaks snow. but getting to lake observestory was a challenge without the snow -- observatory was a challenge without the snow. sky drone 5 captured a mudslide. one of the only two ways to get to the observatory. after years of drought a wintwer too much water -- winter with too much water.

devin fehely, kpix 5 . >> anyone who headed up to the sierra nevada for a ski weekend will be facing delays getting home. interstate 80 reopened after a 16 hour closure. you can see the road is almost completely covered in snow. chains are required to the nevada state line. and images like these you can see why chp tweeted out these photos today as a trucker fought a losing battle to free his big rig. one bucket at a time you will get there, buddy. 21-year-old woman was killed this morning when a tree fell on her at half dome village. heavy winds at the time. and this huge tree fell across the street. it came down on a parked car but no one was hurt. what it looks like now. peer over san francisco bay.

we have a peak of sun here and there. showers subsided over the bay but they will be back for the over night hours and tomorrow as well as we see where it is coming from. low pressure south out of the pacific northwest will keep the moisture flow through the bay area through tomorrow midday. you can see that. periods of showers that will continue for hours. and ease up by tomorrow night. in marin, a little bit in the south bay. where snow is coming down over the hamilton range. the showers are becoming more isolated. there is more rain and gusty winds. brief. but we are not out of it yet. volunteers in san jose are working to clean up the mess from last month's flooding. they cleared out branches and debris and focused on repairing the japanese friendship garden that was destroyed in the

floods. >> tens of thousands of people are held out of the park. the quicker we could get it back up to speed the quicker they could enjoy themselves again. >> restaurants are helping to raise money. 25 restaurants took part in family flood relief day. joining 25% of -- donating 25% of proceeds to the fund. >> we want to donate back. so many people lost so much during the flood that we feel as a community we get to give back. >> the event is spartered in part by the san jose sharks. runs through 9:00 p.m. tonight. police look an unusual approach to yesterday's pro trump rallies. officers standing by as protesters clashed with supports and people are wondering why police didn't step in sooner. kpix 5's jessica flores has more on their hands off approach. >> the violence lasted for hours in downtown berkeley. leaving many people asking why didn't the police move in

sooner and that is the question that one former police chief in the east bay is asking today. police in riot gear watched as fight after fight broke out in berkeley. both sides left beaten and bloodied before police arrested 10 people. >> i feel like they should have done something sooner. three, four fights. >> reporter: today more questions about the police officer's hands off approach. >> it looks bad. i acknowledge that. >> reporter: howard jordan spoke to us on the phone after watching video of the violence. >> volatile and complex situation that should have been handled differently. >> reporter: police denied kpix 5 interview development but in a statement they said every attempt was nide intercede

during violence or identify victims and suspects. because of the nature of the crowd police are not always able to make immediately arrests without insighting further violence or injuring bystanders. last month's protest spilled on to city streets. a violent faction vandalized 15 buildings. this is what police had to say at a time about their response. >> reporter: why did police not arrest anybody? >> our objective was the -- the amount of officers that we had was to make sure that -- protection of life. >> reporter: saturday people did get hurt. >> having someone assaulted and hurt is a concern when you have officers available that could have prevented that. >> reporter: police shared these pictures of weapons they confiscated. bats, clubs and a knife. police did end up arresting four people with assault with a

story and the video. it is disturbing. >> reporter: cell phone video, a man witnesses told us threatened people with a pipe at olympic and broadway is shot to death by two lappet officers. >> still coming down from shock. i mean, never seen something like that happen before. >> reporter: nobody could believe what they were seeing. >> there was this man with a metal rod threatening everyone. >> reporter: she and others told us it appeared the man had mental issues. she was working in her shop on broadway when things started to escalate in front of her shop. >> two men walking on the street. your honor? arguing -- you know? arguing. >> reporter: she says it was the other guy who was aning itinizing the man with a pipe. all the way to the corner and vanished after the shootinging

. he has a bruise on his forearm . police used a stun gun on the man with a pipe and he was saying something to police. we couldn't make it out. before they shoot him, watch, he comes towards one of the police officers. kpix 5. detectives are using that cell phone video as part of their investigation. lapd says the officers were equip with body warn cameras but they were not turned on. 11:30 p.m. last night police got several calls about a shooting. officers say when they arrived a man pulled a gun on them. so they fired. they later discovered the suspect shot a man in & a girl -- and a girl. all three were taken to the hospital. the male victim and the suspect are both in stable condition. no secret that the traffic in the bay area is bad and

this is our future. >> reporter: buses to san francisco will soon be operating from here and they are hoping amtrak could open in three years, shuttling workers to sacramento or b.a.r.t. or oakland. that would make it an attractb police to -- attractive place to live. funding isn't all there yet but caltrans is a big supporter of the project. anything to get cars off of i- 80. >> congestion isn't getting better but if we could help the projects it helps our commute. >> reporter: that is something everyone in the bay area could celebrate. even if they couldn't make it to today's party. john ramos, kpix 5. >> officials say it could take 10 years to connect all modes of transportation. commuters will have a few more options for getting to

work. starting tomorrow the ferry service will link the marina to san francisco. the smaller 40% boat features free wifi, a tv and beer and wine. the 20 minute trip costs 8 bucks each way. also tomorrow, golden gate ferry will launch its new service. back to the storm watch. here we go. how much snow in lake tahoe. on the left is yesterday, on the right is today. good news are skiers and snowboarders. they plan to stay open till july 4. the resort has seen more than 47 feet of snow this season. >> there will be more where that came from. 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts spread firefighters are still working to contain a large brush fire that broke out near miami today. 40 miles per hour gusts spread the flames over 670 acres. emergency crews had to shut down highways as smoke and ash covered the area. no word yet on what started the blaze. back here in california, cal fire taking to the skies preparing for a busy fire season. it could also be a shorter one. >> reporter: might have seen a lot of precipitation but we are

still climbing out of a 5 year drought. >> 102 million trees in the sierra nevada. south of fresno. this is because of the drought and the bark beetle. that fuel is still there. >> reporter: all the dead trees are fuel for wildfires. >> now we have smaller fuels, the grass and the brush growing from our wonderful amount of rain. our concern now lies in the smaller fuels, the grass and the brush, carrying fire into the trees that are dead. >> reporter: we may have an active fire season but it may also be shorter. the fire center is predicting a late start to the fire season. this is due to run off from had exceptional snow pack at the start of the season. more water in the high country means less dry fuel and hopefully fewer fires to fight. as coyotes sightings spike across california, researchers launched an online tool you can

and down the third street corridor, a lot of businesses aren't open anymore. >> reporter: change that has people feeling left out. >> thinking about the people that they are bringing into the neighborhood. what is going to happen to us? >> reporter: that is a question that has been passed down for generations. >> we are going to stay here till you decide to give us some decent housing here for these people who are already here to live in. >> the age of urban renewal. redevelopment that started in the fillmore forcing that neighborhood to leave san francisco or relocate to the city's south east corner. >> we are being evicted because we couldn't pay our rents. >> neighborhood already in crisis. >> you might remember this building as the focal point during the riots in 1966. >> reporter: riots had the

national guard stationed at candlestick park. by the late 1960s this part of san francisco was a national focal point, race, poverty and housing. >> everybody likes to have their own home. it could be improved but seems nice. >> reporter: we will deal with another and perhaps more dangerous form of prediction. a growing divide between the community and police. >> where is the gun at and all that. >> reporter: division within the community. >> conditions out here, people bring it on themselves. >> the problems would only get worse. >> the old business are moving out. >> reporter: 1974 brought the closing of the hunters point ship yard. >> hard for the people. you know? >> reporter: there were promises -- >> we hope to have mixed income occupancy here.

>> reporter: skepticism that reached back to the fillmore. >> promised 200 units. >> perfect example. perfect example. the fillmore being another african american root. >> reporter: that is where the bay view was. crime and drug plagued through the great recession. >> hit hard during the down turn. foreclosures and short sales. >> reporter: want to know when the change started here? >> as soon as the market came back people were just all over this neighborhood. >> bay view is the last frontier in real estate in san francisco. >> part is the shift south. people used to want to be in our central or north central neighborhoods as a first choice and now because of silicon valley people prefer to be on the south enof the city -- end of the city.

>> reporter: medium home price in 2010, $360,000. today, $750,000. >> you see prices double. >> reporter: it wasn't just the single family homes at low prices. >> the community has been waiting for this for a very, very long time. >> when they put this in, that is when we knew. >> the story of transit coming south and the economic rebirth or continuing boom of san francisco. >> reporter: the real measure of that boom is the changing face of this neighborhood where the african american population has gone from nearly half to less than a third. >> it was slow changes that first but gradually it started turning into big changes. >> the changes are not by accident. the city has been drawing up redevelopment plans for years and as the plans slowly become reality the division between had past and the future becomes more and more apparent.

>> drawing a separation. >> the city is trying to avoid the mistakes of the past by offering displaced residents a chance to live in the new developments. >> you can stay in your neighborhood but under new terms. you know, how much of the neighborhood identity did we manage to preserve or, you know, is it just kind of putting a band did a on displacement. >> nobody is against economic opportunity or jobs and jobs creation but we have to make sure that opportunity that comes is available to the people. >> reporter: proof the city is getting exactly what it wanted for 50 years. a real economic boom in the bay view. a small piece of a long story that may have a very simple bottom line. >> they want what we got for
